Moneyball is an event that fans and players alike love every year that it comes around in the East Lansing area. It gives the fans an opportunity to see a different, looser side of the players that don the green and white.

On Saturday, in Flint, both current and former Spartans came out to put on a show. Flint hosted a pro-am event that saw many hometown basketball players show out.

Moneyball Pro Am is back for another summer and Michigan State is once again well-represented in the event.

The Spartans are all competing in this year’s event, which includes matchups twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Holt, Mich. In the past, this annual summer event has given us an inside look at the progression made during the offseason for key Spartans and this year’s event surely has been no different.

Michigan State basketball defense suffocates Alcorn State, Spartans cruise to 32-point victory

Michigan State defense suffocates Alcorn State, Spartans cruise to 32-point victory

After a slow start to the season, Michigan State basketball really needed their last two games against Butler and Alcorn State. On Sunday, the Spartans got their second straight win, this time against the aforementioned Alcorn State, handling the Braves 81 to 49.

If there is one thing that has been consistent this season despite the troubling losses it’s been the defense, which has looked strong all year and again on Sunday. What hasn’t been consistent has been the shooting. On Sunday, the Spartans shot 40-percent from three, with Tre Holloman leading the way with five threes and a career-high of 17 points.

Jaden Akins also had a nice game, which is good to see since this team’s ceiling is largely tied to his play. Akins finished with 13 points and shot 50-percent from three. He also recorded five rebounds and three assists.

With Tyson Walker out tonight and a big lead intact, we got to see a little more court-time for the freshmen tonight, to some mixed results. Jeremy Fears Jr. and Coen Carr, the two freshmen who have played the most, looked good once again tonight. The two freshmen combined went 9-for-11 from the field and scored 20 points.

Xavier Booker, probably the most high-profile of the Spartans’ freshmen, will still be a work-in-progress in the beginning of this year. He went 2-for-8 and scored 5 points.

The Spartans will face another huge test on Thanksgiving when they face No. 3 ranked Arizona in Palm Springs.

Michigan State basketball releases incoming freshman jersey numbers

MSU has released their roster and the incoming freshman have their jersey numbers

Michigan State has officially released their basketball roster for the 2022-23 season. While there are no surprises with the roster release, and all freshman and returners are accounted for, it is exciting to see what numbers the freshman will be wearing.

MSU is bringing in a freshman class that features Jaxon Kohler, Trejuan Holloman, Carson Cooper and walk-on Nicholas Sanders.

Take a look at the jersey numbers the freshman will be wearing along with their official heights and weights:

What’s next for Michigan State basketball and the 2022 recruiting class?

Check out what the final piece of the puzzle needs to be for Michigan State and the 2022 recruiting class

Michigan State and head coach Tom Izzo locked up the second commitment of the 2022 recruiting class this past weekend, earning a pledge from big man Jaxon Kohler of Southern California Academy.

Kohler joined fellow four-star and Minneapolis PG Tre Holloman in the Spartans 2022 recruiting class.

Now that the Spartans have earned two commitments in this class, what is next as we wind this recruiting cycle down? Well, Tre Holloman took to Twitter to voice what he would like to see next.

Holloman hit the nail sqaure on the head with this one. The perfect ending to the Spartans 2022 recruiting class would be gaining the commitment of the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan, small forward Ty Rodgers of Grand Blanc.

A three man class of Holloman, Kohler and Rodgers would be very solid for the Spartans in a 2022 cycle that had felt so underwhelming for a while.

Rodgers will be officially visiting East Lansing on October 2nd. The main competition for the Spartans in this recruitment features Memphis, Michigan, Alabama and Xavier.

Locking up Rodgers and capping the 2022 recruiting class would be big-time for allowing the staff to shift their focus on a 2023 class that is filled with star-studded talent.

Michigan State basketball commit Tre Holloman to officially visit this weekend

MSU basketball commit Tre Holloman is on campus again this weekend

Michigan State landed its lone 2022 basketball commit just over a month ago in the form of four star point guard Tre Holloman. The Minneapolis native made his pledge to the Spartan program, kickstarting the 2022 class.

Having visited previously, but taking advantage of a loophole in the NCAA’s rules, Holloman is able to officially visit the Michigan State campus for a second time, which is happening this weekend.

Holloman has been very vocal about landing fellow hoopers in the 2022 class to join him in East Lansing, making Holloman’s presence this weekend even better now that we know Jaxon Kohler and potentially Ty Rodgers will be on campus with him.

A big recruiting weekend for the Spartans basketball program could be just getting underway.

Michigan State basketball: Recruiting Big Board

Take a look at Michigan State basketball’s 2022 recruiting big board

The 2022 recruiting cycle is in full swing, summer basketball tournaments are going on all over the country and the MSU coaching staff is on the road trying to build the next class of Spartans.

There was a time where MSU had both Emoni Bates and Enoch Boakye as a part of the 2022 recruiting class. But now, both have decommitted, Bates likely going pro and Boakye reclassifying to 2021 and heading to Arizona State.

The Spartans are now left with an empty recruiting class, but that wont be for long.

Tentatively, there are five open scholarships after this year, but Joey Hauser, Gabe Brown, and Marcus Bingham may have the option for one more additional season. So we should expect anywhere from 2 to 5 additions in this class.

Let’s take a look at who MSU is targeting in the 2022 recruiting class:

MSU picks up crystal ball prediction for 2022 4-star PG Tre Holloman

Michigan State is apparently in a great position to land one of the top point guards in the 2022 class

Michigan State is apparently in a great position to land one of the top point guards in the 2022 class.

The Spartans picked up a 247Sports crystal ball prediction for four-star point guard Tre Holloman of Saint Paul, Minn. on Friday. Michigan State recruiting insider Justin Thind was the one who entered the crystal ball prediction, stating in a tweet that a decision is not imminent but he’s locking in a pick for the Spartans.

Holloman is ranked as the No. 11 point guard and No. 72 overall prospect in 247Sports composite rankings or the 2022 class. He’s also listed as the top player from Minnesota.

Holloman — who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds — holds scholarship offers from Michigan State, Marquette, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Texas, Baylor, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Dayton.

Michigan State basketball makes 4-star PG Tre Holloman’s top six

MSU has made a 4-star point guard’s top six:

After a top ten recruiting class in 2021, Tom Izzo is back on the recruiting trail, looking to duplicate that success in 2022. Trejuan (Tre) Holloman could be apart of those plans.

Holloman, a 4-star point guard, ranked as the No. 52 overall player and No. 8 PG in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Holloman released a top six this afternoon:

Michigan State is featured in the top six along with Dayton, Illinois, Marquette, Minnesota, and Oklahoma State.

Izzo and staff hosted Holloman on an official visit during the first weekend of June. There is no decision date for Holloman yet, but the Spartans will be a factor in this recruitment into the very end.
