Oklahoma football notebook: Alex Grinch, Tre Brown, Isaiah Thomas talk Tuesday

Alex Grinch, Tre Brown and Isaiah Thomas met with the media ahead of Oklahoma’s trip to play West Virginia on Saturday.

Oklahoma is 6-2 after dominating Bedlam last Saturday by a final margin of 41-13.

Defensively, the Sooners played a very high level. Oklahoma State struggled to get next to anything going all game long, as they couldn’t run the ball and their quarterbacks were running for dear life all night long.

Ronnie Perkins continues to provide a huge impact since his return, and he did enough to earn himself Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Sooners’ defensive line is clearly a force and among the best in the country this season with him in it.

As Oklahoma prepares to head to Morgantown to face West Virginia this week, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch along with corner back Tre Brown and defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas met with the media to discuss the latest with the team. Here is what they had to say.

Oklahoma football notebook: Alex Grinch, Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown, Jordan Kelley talk Wednesday

Ahead of Oklahoma’s trip to face Texas Tech, Alex Grinch, Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown, and Jordan Kelley met with the media Wednesday.

No. 24 Oklahoma (3-2, 2-2) is fresh off a wire-to-wire win over TCU and now turn their attention to Texas Tech (2-3, 1-3) for a Halloween night collision in Lubbock.

The Sooners’ defense has had a bit of an up-and-down season to this point, but are coming off certainly its most complete performance in Big 12 play to this point.

They only allowed the Horned Frogs to get in the end zone twice (one of which was in garbage time) and TCU averaged only three yards per rushing attempt.

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch along with defensive players Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown and Jordan Kelley met with the media to discuss to latest with the Sooner defense and team ahead of the matchup with Texas Tech.

Here is what they had to say.

Cornerback Tre Brown “Looks Completely Different” From Last Year

Oklahoma’s cornerbacks coach Roy Manning had high praise for senior cornerback Tre Brown during his zoom press conference on Wednesday.

Oklahoma’s cornerbacks coach Roy Manning had high praise for senior cornerback Tre Brown during his zoom press conference on Wednesday.

“I’m really excited about he steps he’s taken from January until now,” Manning said.

Brown racked up 32 tackles, 11 deflections and one interception last season. But for Manning, there’s reason to expect a completely different player in 2020.

“To his credit, he looks completely different than a year ago,” Manning said. “As committed right now as I’ve seen since I’ve been here to his technique, and it’s allowing him to make plays and make plays consistently. He is playing at a really high level right now.

Defensive Coordinator Alex Grinch agrees, listing Brown as a player that has stepped up significantly this year.

“A year ago, he wasn’t a leader by example,” Grinch said. “He had his good days, but then he was too willing to just have a bad day. And I think Tre would tell you the same thing. And I’m not just talking about the season. I’m talking about in fall camp and those things.”

Tre Brown named to Hornung Award watch list

Senior CB Tre Brown was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list on Thursday

Senior CB Tre Brown was named to the Paul Hornung Award preseason watch list on Thursday.

The Hornung Award has annually honored the nation’s most versatile player since 2010. Brown will be looking to become the very first Sooner to take home the award.

Besides helping to anchor OU’s secondary for the past three seasons, the Tulsa native is OU’s primary kick returner. And with CeeDee Lamb’s departure for the NFL, Brown may be inheriting punt return duties as well.

As a DB, Brown racked up 32 tackles, 11 deflections and one interception last season. He also returned 23 kickoffs for an average of 17.9 yards, good for 4th in the Big 12.

This season, Brown and the rest of the Sooners will be looking to take another step into Alex Grinch’s Speed D system.

In Grinch’s first season, OU ranked 46th in the country in passing yards per game allowed, a massive improvement from 2018 (129th out of 130).

After laying out the top five QB, RB, and WRs Texas will face in 2020, we now go to the opposite side of the ball and look at cornerbacks.

After laying out the top five quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receiver Texas will face in 2020, we now go to the opposite side of the ball and look at cornerbacks.

For a conference that loves to air the ball out, the Big 12 has some incredible cornerbacks. Add in the top corner in the country from the SEC and Texas will have their hands full next season.

Wide receiver is a big question for the Longhorns going into the season. Players such as Brennan Eagles and Tarik Black are expected to step up on the outside. These five guys will be trying to stop them and limit Sam Ehlinger.

Here are the top five corners Texas will face in 2020:
