Tommy Togiai officially signs rookie contract with Browns

Former Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai has officially signed his rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns.

It’s official for former Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai. According to a picture and caption on Twitter by the Cleveland Browns account, Togia has inked his rookie deal.

Details of the contract are not immediately clear at this point, but Togiai surprised many by declaring early for the NFL draft after last season. He wasn’t a sure-fire first couple of days pick, but he was selected by the Browns as the No. 132 overall pick in the fourth round.

Possessing brut strength, an unyielding work ethic, and a high motor, Togiai has the tools to be successful in clogging things up in the middle of the trenches, and that’s just what the Browns hope they got in the Idaho native.

We will continue to stay on top of all the former Ohio State players that were selected in the 2021 NFL draft as they sign their new rookie contracts. In the meantime, good luck to Togiai as he tries to carve out a home in Northeast Ohio.

Tommy Togiai: What the Browns are getting in their fourth-round DT

What are the Cleveland Browns getting in their newly acquired defensive tackle, Tommy Togiai from Ohio State

With the 132nd pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Tommy Togiai, a strong defensive tackle from Ohio State. Few would argue against Togiai being an absolute steal in the fourth round, with most pundits had him mocked as high as the second round.

Strengths:

Togiai is an absolute unit and shaped like a fire hydrant at 6-1 and 296 pounds with the potential to hit 315 with ease. He is easily the strongest prospect in this class as evidenced by his insane 40 reps of 225 on the bench press and that strength is obvious on film too along with his utilization of leverage when pushing opposing offensive lineman back.

Weaknesses:

Togiai has a decent first step, but it isn’t elite and it would be utterly shocking if he piles up many sacks in his NFL career. His lack of length makes his tackle radius small and this affects him in the open field especially. Togiai likely fell due to his ineffectiveness against the pass.

Projected Fit:

Togiai will likely not be a starter as a rookie, but he can grow into being a top-notch interior defensive lineman in this league. He is ready to contribute on obvious rushing down and will likely shine in these situations early and often. Togiai has the size and athleticism to fit any scheme and can even play nose. He is very comparable to former Cleveland Browns defensive tackle, Larry Ogunjobi.

A look at the Big Ten sack leaders from 2020

It seems like every football season a strong point of the Big Ten is its tough defenses. This year was no different, as teams like Ohio S…

In a league traditionally known for defense, this year was no different. The Big Ten conference had a number of top defenses as well as dominant pass rushers in 2020. Related: PHOTOS: Wisconsin football’s ninth spring practice of the year

Despite Wisconsin playing fewer games than most of the Big Ten last season, their defense was ranked as one of the best defenses in the country led by linebackers Jack Sanborn and Leo Chenal. In fact, Chenal was the only Badger to crack the top 15 of this list. Luckily, this phenomenal pair of linebackers will be returning to lead the Badger defense this upcoming season.

Below is the ranking of the top 15 players in sacks per game from the Big Ten Conference 2020 season. Players from Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota have all made the rankings.

1-tech defensive tackle prospects for Cowboys to consider throughout draft

Tim Lettiero reviews seven 1-tech defensive tackles who can contribute as a run defender in each round in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.

Over the years, few notable names have been brought in to boost the run defense. With Dan Quinn creating a shift in the culture bringing in the likes of Brent Urban, there is hope for the future. With a horrid 2020 campaign in the run stuffing department, the Dallas Cowboys simply must address the position they so frequently are known for ignoring.

Antwaun Woods has shown the ability to be an energetic body off the bench but he is coming off a down year, often given no help by lackluster performances from fellow teammates who have now moved onwards like Dontari Poe. Woods is in desperate need of a rotational partner at minimum and this draft is the perfect opportunity to do so with many viable options throughout the rounds. Here are some names to keep in mind when the Dallas Cowboys are up in each round of the 2021 NFL draft:

Breaking down Chargers’ picks in The Athletic’s latest 7-round mock draft

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez breaks down every pick made by The Athletic’s Dane Brugler.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler released his new seven-round mock draft on Wednesday.

Brugler pays close attention to fit (scheme and culture), draft trends, meetings, etc rather than his own personal opinion.

The highly-touted draft analyst kicks off the Chargers draft with the selection of former Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

“The Chargers don’t need another wide receiver to be an explosive offense – they already are with Justin Herbert at quarterback. But the idea of dropping Waddle’s special athleticism into that scheme (with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams) would be tough to pass up,” Brugler said.

In a piece I recently wrote that lays out three bold predictions, the first thing jotted down was that Los Angeles would take a pass-catcher in the first-round as opposed to an offensive tackle or cornerback.

I said that general manager Tom Telesco could roll the dice on one, knowing that Mike Williams will be in the final year of his contract and Jalen Guyton didn’t do enough to warrant himself as a starter after a slew of drops.

If Waddle was the pick, he would give quarterback Justin Herbert a dynamic weapon who can win with speed, quickness and route running ability to consistently separate and win with the ball in his hands, as well as a player who can return kicks and punts at a high level.

In the following round, that’s where L.A. finds their left tackle of the future, taking former Texas OT Samuel Cosmi.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Cosmi gone by the time the Bolts are picking at No. 47, especially after blowing it up at his pro day. However, if he’s still on the board, it should be a no-brainer.

Cosmi’s pass-blocking technique will need to improve and he will need to get stronger, but due to his length, natural balance, athleticism, and movement skills, he has a high ceiling in the NFL.

With their first pick in the third-round, the Chargers find their boundary corner opposite Michael Davis in former Stanford CB Paulson Adebo.

Adebo hasn’t played in over a year after a season-ending injury and the pandemic caused him to opt out of his senior season. When he is on the field, Adebo’s fluid body control, reactive athleticism and play-making abilities make him a plug-and-play corner.

To round out Day 2, Los Angeles addresses the offensive line again with the selection of former Clemson OL Jackson Carman.

Due to his skillset, Carman projects as a right guard, where he could compete for a starting job with Oday Aboushi. Given his strength, sufficient length and power, he could kick out to right tackle, where he could handle a role as a long-term starter.

To start Day 3, L.A. bolsters the interior part of the defensive line with the pick of former Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai.

Togiai is an undersized interior defender with good power, hand usage and agility, projecting as valuable piece to the rotation from Day 1 and eventual starter.

In Round 5, the Bolts address the safety position, taking former Texas SAF Caden Sterns.

While his tackling is maddening, Sterns is a rangy playmaker who has fluid athleticism, high football intelligence and impressive ball skills who is capable of playing either safety position, in the slot and in the box.

To kick off Round 6, the Chargers add more depth at the outside linebacker position, selecting former Oregon State OLB Hamilcar Rashed.

His pass-rush arsenal lacks variety, and his production is based more on effort and athleticism than technique. However, Rashed is only scratching the surface of his ability and shows the athleticism, competitive toughness and physical traits to be a productive NFL pass rusher.

With their second pick in the sixth-round, Los Angeles add another cornerback, taking former LSU CB Kary Vincent, Jr.

Vincent Jr. is a speedy and versatile defensive back who played inside at nickel and some safety. His quickness in his movements, elite top end speed and ball skills could help him carve up a significant role inside at the next level.

To conclude the draft, L.A. takes former SMU tight end Kylen Granson.

While he lacks strength to be an effective run-blocker, Granson can create mismatches with his physicality, speed and explosiveness as a receiver, projecting as a receiving tight end or big slot receiver.

Tommy Togiai falls short of bench press record at Ohio State’s pro day, still raises money for charity

The Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai fell short of his goal on the bench press but still impressed and raised money for charity.

All in all, 14 different Buckeyes participated in the pro day at Ohio State Tuesday. It was an all-around display of incredible athletism. From Justin Fields 40 time and unbelievable display throwing the ball to Barron Browing leaping out of the Woody… it was something to behold.

But maybe the most impressive feat of the day was Tommy Togiai on the bench press. We told you earlier that the OSU defensive lineman was hoping to break a record by hitting 50 reps of 225 pounds while raising money for chairty at the same time.

Unfortunately, Togiai fell short in his efforts to break the record, but what he did was still astounding. Big Tom pushed out 40 reps with 225 on the bench press. Maybe even more amazing was Togia hitting 38 reps before taking a pause to rest. That’s just raw strength and stamina.

While Togiai didn’t break the record, what he did was still the stuff of legends. And by the way… he raised over $3,000 for his charity, LiFEsports at The Ohio State University.

Well done on all accounts Big Tom!

Ohio State’s Tommy Togiai will try to break bench press record for charity

Ohio State defensive lineman will try to break the bench press record at OSU’s pro day to raise money for charity. Don’t count him out.

It came as somewhat of a surprise when Tommy Togiai decided to forgo his last year at Ohio State for the NFL draft. Togiai will take part in the OSU pro day this Tuesday, March 30 to showcase his skills and try to impress NFL scouts. But the defensive tackle who helped anchor one of the best lines in the country will try to do more than just that.

We all know these guys are strong, but I don’t think any of us realize just how strong. And Togiai is about to attempt something that seems so far out of the realm of possibility as he attempts to bench press 225 pounds 50 times! FIFTY!

If you’ve ever lifted weights, you know doing three sets of 10 can be taxing, but 50 reps in one set? Mindblowing.

So why the show of strength? Obviously, Togiai wants to showcase what he can do and hopefully improve his draft stock. But there is more to it than just that as the big man wants to give back to the community and is partnering with Ohio State’s LiFEsports initiative to do so.

For every rep that Togiai completes, a matching contribution will be made to LiFEsports. LiFEsports is a partnership between The Ohio State University’s College of Social Work, the OSU Department of Athletics, and the Department of Recreational Sports.

According to their website, the goal of LiFEsports is to increase the number and quality of sport and recreational programs available to youth, especially those from vulnerable circumstances.

What an admirable cause and way to give back. If Togiai can get to 50 reps, he will break the previous record of 49 reps held by Stephen Paea of Oregon State set in 2011.

If you would like to pledge to the cause, you can go to TommyTogiai’s “Pledge It” page to donate.
