NFL Prop Bet Payday: Championship Game Edition

Previewing Sunday’s NFL conference championship games between the Titans and Chiefs and the Packers and 49ers with NFL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Super Bowl dreams are still alive for four teams, and those four teams have one thing in common: the last time they stood this close to the Super Bowl, most players taking the field this weekend weren’t yet in the league — and in some cases, even alive. San Francisco’s last Super Bowl was in 2013. Green Bay’s was 2011. Tennessee’s was 2000. Kansas City’s was 1970 before the AFL and NFL merged.

Two of those franchises will end their drought. Our championship week prop bets look at a key player from each team and breaks down how each can make you a winner.

Bo Knows Derrick

The number keeps getting higher on Derrick Henry’s rushing yards — currently at 106.5 with -112 on both the over and the under — and for good reason. He has rushed for 149 or more yards in six of his last eight games, including games of 211, 182 and 195 in his last three and 188 when he played Kansas City in November. In that game, even if you took out his 68-yard touchdown run, he still ran 22 times for 120 yards. The Titans have fed him the ball 30 or more times in each of the last three games against defenses viewed as being better than that of the Chiefs. Barring a 20-point deficit in the first half, he will keep getting the rock. TAKE THE OVER.

The Road Less Travis-ed

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had 3 touchdowns in a quarter last weekend. What will he do come Sunday? (Photo credit: Mark J. Rebilas – USA TODAY Sports)

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is being given a pretty representative over/under number to get action on both sides at 78.5 yards (-112 on both the over and under). Since quarterback Patrick Mahomes returned from injury, Kelce has caught seven or more passes in six of eight games, including catching seven passes for 75 yards against the Titans in Week 10. Tennessee is likely going to double Tyreek Hill more often than not in an effort to prevent the huge play over the top. Enter Kelce and death by paper cut. By the time the Texans doubled Kelce in the second half of their game last week, it was too late. He caught 10 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns. He likely won’t hit that number, but eight catches for 80+ yards isn’t out of the question. TAKE THE OVER.

The Adams Family

Aaron Rodgers (12) and Davante Adams are one football’s scariest hookups. (Photo credit: Jeff Hanisch – USA TODAY Sports)

The Packers don’t hide the fact that Davante Adams is the main man in their pass offense — and whoever the No. 2 guy happens to be that week isn’t even close. He has a big over/under receiving yardage number of 84.5 (-112 on both), but there are two factors that come into play. Green Bay needed to win each of their last four games to hold their spot as the No. 2 seed in the NFC. In those games, Adams had yardage totals of 103, 116, 93 and 160. The case against Adams is that Richard Sherman will likely be chasing him around wherever he lines up come this Sunday. But if the 49ers open up a big lead (they’re favored by 7.5 points) Rodgers will have nothing to lose to keep throwing. Even if it covers in garbage time, that’s fine. TAKE THE OVER.

The World According to Jim

Considering the stakes, his opponent and a strong rushing attack behind him, will 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo be asked to do less Sunday? (Photo Credit: Orlando Ramirez – USA TODAY Sports)

The over/under on passing yards for Jimmy Garoppolo is 248.5 (-112 on both). It’s a solid number because he has exceeded that number in five of his last 10 games — and finished with 248 in two others. But two things play in against him hitting the over. Green Bay’s pass rush won’t let him have all day to throw. They will dial up the heat and get the ball out of his hands. More importantly, the closer teams get to the Super Bowl, the more conservative most of them get. Last week, the three-headed 49ers backfield combined to rush 42 times. If they get a big lead, which many in Vegas are projecting, they will take the air out of the ball to shorten the game and pound the rock until Green Bay stops it. TAKE THE UNDER.

Notre Dame Pair Featured in USA TODAY Mock Draft

The other Golden Domer that Middlehurst-Schwartz had going in round one would be headed to one of the few franchises still playing football this January.

As college football has concluded for 2019 and the NFL has just three more games of consequence we slowly start to turn to the annual blending of the two, the NFL Draft.

Next weekend will be the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama and coaches and scouts will get a chance to see the stars of tomorrow up close for a week.

With that in mind it is officially Mock Draft Season.

Perhaps the excitement in the air isn’t quite as rich as when the holidays hit in December but for football fans and followers it’s an interesting time to watch stocks rise and fall NFL bound players.

With that in mind the USA TODAY released their latest NFL Mock Draft on Thursday and a pair of key 2019 Notre Dame players made their way to the first round.

Here is who Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz has going and where he has them headed in April’s draft:

23. Patriots — Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame: While New England’s future with Tom Brady remains unclear, perhaps it’s time for Bill Belichick and Co. to focus on a different glaring issue. As the draft’s top talent at tight end, Kmet might help fill the Rob Gronkowski-sized hole in this offense.

Ah, the natural fit. If you’re a tight end you want to go to Notre Dame because they turn out more talent than anyone else at the position. Meanwhile if you’re in the NFL it’s hard to find many places better to play than New England where so much of their offensive success over the last two decades has been built on great tight ends. This would be a dream scenario for Kmet.

The other Golden Domer that Middlehurst-Schwartz had going in round one would be headed to one of the few franchises still playing football this January.

29. Titans — Julian Okwara, DE/OLB, Notre Dame: Mike Vrabel has thrown an assortment of players into the pass-rushing mix, yet none have proven consistent threats. Tennessee can ramp up its efforts on this front by grabbing Okwara, who’s still learning the finer points of his position but has a tantalizing athletic profile.

Will Okwara end being a first round pick? It depends you ask, read or follow as he is seemingly very much on the bubble there. After what they’ve done the last two weekends and really since the middle of the regular season Okwara would be walking into a place to likely to compete for something big again.

Some matchups are just better than others. No one would have wanted to see the banged-up Seahawks face off against the undermanned Patriots in Super Bowl LIV — unless you’re from New England or the Pacific Northwest. That game would have been boring. We’ve seen it before. It would lack explosive plays. Luckily we don’t have those matchups. Still, some games would be more fun than others and that’s where we come in. Let’s rank the possible Super Bowl LIV games.

12 Best bets in the NFL divisional round

Picks and predictions for the 2020 NFL divisional round matchups between the Titans-Ravens, Texans-Chiefs, Seahawks-Packers, Niners-Vikings

Welcome to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. There are a few pieces of advice that you should use when betting this weekend. Some of the nuggets of wisdom below are stolen from other people, while some just make sense.

That advice will pop up through this week’s pick. Use it, don’t use it, but just think about it. There’s nothing worse than having a bad divisional round with the national championship game coming up on Monday.

As usual, the home teams are in CAPS, and we are using Bet MGM for our odds. Games will be listed at -110 unless denoted otherwise.

Longhorns in Saturday’s NFL Divisional Round Games

After last weekend’s fantastic games, the NFL playoffs move towards the Divisional round on Saturday. Here are the Longhorns in those games.

After a Wild Card weekend full of upsets and fantastic games, the NFL playoffs move towards the Divisional on Saturday and Sunday. With two games on the card on Saturday, the top seed San Francisco 49ers will be hosting the Minnesota Vikings in the opening game.

The Longhorns have people on both teams, firstly with San Francisco.  Firstly, even though he is on injured reserve, Marquise Goodwin is on the 49ers roster for the game on Saturday. He last played in Week 13 against the Ravens. Goodwin hauled in 12 catches for 186 yards and a touchdown in 2019. Also, the head coach of the 49ers is Texas graduate Kyle Shanahan.

On the flip side, two former defensive players are going to be playing for the Vikings. Holton Hill and Kris Boyd are former DBU players for the Longhorns and have already helped Minnesota get a playoff victory against the Saints last week. Hill has recorded 12 tackles this season while also recovering a fumble, while Boyd has 11 tackles and a fumble recovery of his own.

For the nightcap, the Tennessee Titans will be traveling to Baltimore to face off against the Ravens. Kenny Vaccaro is the only former Texas player on the Tennessee roster, as he helped the Titans secure an upset victory in Foxborough against the New England Patriots. Vacarro has 79 total tackles this season, while also recording an interception and a sack.

Baltimore is the home for two Longhorn legends, as legendary kicker Justin Tucker and outstanding defensive back Earl Thomas come in as the top seed in the AFC. Coming off a bye, the Ravens will need both players to step up to get into the AFC Championship game. Tucker has only missed three kicks this year, going 57/59 on PATs and 28/29 on field goals. In his first season with Baltimore, Thomas has 49 total tackles with two sacks and two interceptions.

You can catch the 49ers play the Vikings at 3:30 p.m. CST on NBC, while Baltimore will host Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. CST on CBS. No matter what happens, the Longhorns will have representatives in the AFC and NFC Championship game.

Poll: Who will QB Philip Rivers be playing for in 2020?

Will it be the Los Angeles Chargers or another NFL team for quarterback Philip Rivers in 2020?

One thing is clear. Quarterback Philip Rivers has every intention of playing in 2020. But one thing that’s not and that’s who he will be playing for.

We recently did a poll on what fans believe the future holds for Rivers. But since the 38-year old suggested that he wants to play for his 17th season, we want to know what team you believe that’ll be with.

Bringing back Rivers remains a strong possibility for the Chargers, but nothing is certain. The front office and coaching staff are evaluating every position from this past season to determine the soon-to-be free agents that’ll be back in 2020.

If Rivers doesn’t return, we created a list of the top-five teams that we could see having the most interest in acquiring the veteran quarterback.

With that being said, we want to know who you believe Rivers will be playing for next season.

A guide to the AFC Sixth Seed

It comes down to the Titans, Steelers, and Raiders.

There’s on real playoff spot open in the AFC. Every other team is fighting for seeding. The Patriots win and they lock up the bye. The Patriots lose and the Chiefs win, that two seed goes to Kansas City. The Chiefs lose and the Texans win then Houston gets the three seed. The point is that every single one of those teams is safe. Even the Buffalo Bills are safe. The six seed in the AFC is not obvious. There are three teams fighting for one spot.  Here, we’ll rank their chances as well as which team would be the best team to make the playoffs. We’ll go worst to first.
