Chiefs are the best team in the NFL, according to ESPN Analytics

ESPN Analytics ranked the #Chiefs as the NFL’s best team after Kansas City’s Week 9 win over the Miami #Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Kansas City Chiefs Week 9 win over the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany cemented their spot as the AFC’s top team in terms of playoff seeding, but the quants at ESPN Analytics don’t seem to think their dominance ends at the conference level.

According to ESPN’s football power index, Kansas City hosts the best team in the NFL, with two AFC rivals taking second and third place through nine games.

This ranking may surprise some fans who watched the Chiefs’ frustrating losses to the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos earlier in the season, but after taking down the fifth-best team on the list, Kansas City certainly deserved a top spot.

The Chiefs will have their chance to beat the seventh-ranked team, the Philadelphia Eagles, after their bye week in a Super Bowl LVII rematch at Arrowhead Stadium.

If Kansas City emerges victorious against Philadelphia in Week 11, expect the Chiefs to remain atop the FPI rankings until another team takes them down later in the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs followed up their Super Bowl victory in February with a win in the “Best Team” category at the 2023 ESPYs. After overcoming adversity over the course of their 2022 campaign, the Chiefs rose to the top of the NFL pantheon by besting the Philadelphia Eagles on the biggest stage in all of sports.

Among those present to accept the award on the team’s behalf were defensive lineman Chris Jones, running back Isiah Pacheco, tight end Travis Kelce, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kelce had presented the “Best Comeback Athlete” award earlier in the night, and Mahomes received the coveted “Best NFL Player” honor shortly after his teammate’s moment at center stage.

The title of “Best Team” is sure to stick with the Chiefs through training camp and the preseason as they look to prepare for the rigors that the coming football season holds for them. If they can duplicate last year’s results over the course of their grueling 17-game schedule in 2023, Kansas City has a legitimate chance to win this same accolade next year.

The Kansas City Chiefs are well-represented in the nominations for the 2023 ESPY Awards.

Reigning league MVP and Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes, is up for a pair of awards. He’s nominated in the “Best Male Athlete” and the “Best NFL Player” category. The last time that Mahomes was the reigning league MVP, he won both of these categories.

He’ll have his work cut out for him in the “Best Male Athlete” category with Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Argentinian soccer sensation Lionel Messi rounding out the competition. In the “Best NFL Player” category, Mahomes will go against Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson and San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa.

The entire 2022 Chiefs team received a nomination for the “Best Team” category, which also features the recently crowned NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets.

ESPN’s Heather Dinich pegs Florida as SEC’s second-best team

A day after the completion of the first slate of 2020 SEC ESPN broke down the College Football Playoff takeaways from the weekend of action.

One day after the completion of the first slate of 2020 Southeastern Conference games, ESPN’s Heather Dinich broke down her College Football Playoff takeaways from the weekend of action.

Touching on several topics, including whether the Oklahoma Sooners are done and what the outlook is for the Pacific-12 Conference, Dinich took some time to recognize the Florida Gators’ impressive showing against the Ole Miss Rebels, saying Dan Mullen’s program looks like the league’s second-best team, trailing only the Alabama Crimson Tide.

“With the exception of Alabama, the SEC looked different in its debut, but that was to be expected with four head coaching changes and several new starting quarterbacks,” Dinich began.

“LSU, the defending national champion, returned only five starters and the Tigers looked the part in a home loss to Mississippi State. The question is whether Georgia and LSU are just working out some kinks or … it’s an Alabama-Florida SEC championship.

“Expectations were certainly higher for Florida this year (the media picked the Gators to win the SEC East), but it was only by 10 more first-place votes than Georgia. The Gators looked more than capable of widening that gap Saturday.

“Florida’s offense found its stride in a 51-35 win at Ole Miss, racking up 642 total yards, a school record against an SEC opponent. Quarterback Kyle Trask finished with 416 passing yards and six passing touchdowns, and the Rebels had no answer for the connection between Trask and tight end Kyle Pitts.

“Meanwhile, Georgia needed a quarterback change to rally to beat Arkansas 37-10. The final score doesn’t tell the whole story, as Arkansas held a 7-5 halftime lead. Starting quarterback D’Wan Mathis was benched in the second quarter in favor of Stetson Bennett. The Bulldogs had 11 first-half penalties and were just 1-for-12 on third down in the first half.

“Before Georgia thinks about the CFP, it needs to look like a contender in the SEC East. So far, Florida looks like the team to beat.”

Moving up two spots to No. 3 in the Associated Press Poll, the Gators will battle Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Gamecocks (0-1) in their home-opener on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Dropping one spot to No. 4, Kirby Smart’s Georgia team will host the No. 7 Auburn Tigers (1-0) at 7:30 p.m., also on ESPN.

There are three teams fighting for one spot.  Here, we’ll rank their chances as well as which team would be the best team to make the playoffs. We’ll go worst to first.
