Texas is No. 18 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Longhorns come into the season with a new vigor due to the transfer in of QB Quinn Ewers. The 5-star Texas native spent a season at Ohio State before transferring. He was eventually named the starting quarterback by coach Steve Sarkisian.

Louisiana Monroe was 4-8 last season, coach Terry Bowden’s first year with the Warhawks. It was actually an improvement from their winless 0-10 record during the 2020 season. Their goal is obviously to be competitive in the Sun Belt Conference, but they’ll play more of a sacrificial lamb in this opener.

I use the word contest lightly as this game is not going to be in doubt from the opening kickoff.

Ewers, WR Xavier Worthy and RB Bijan Robinson will all have monster games for the Longhorns. Although they could all be resting and sitting on the bench come halftime. With Alabama on the docket next week, Sarkisian might want them to get a bit more playing time than normal in a blowout. So, this could get even uglier than expected.

Over/Under

OVER 63.5 (-115) is a SOLID PLAY..

UL-Monroe will score late, but Texas will score early and often. With Texas likely to get to 50, all Louisiana-Monroe needs to do is get to 14 … and they will in garbage time.

The Rice Owls and the USC Trojans open their seasons Saturday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff (Pac-12 Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rice vs. USC odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

USC, No.15 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, hopes to start the Lincoln Riley era with a victory – Riley was hired away from Oklahoma last November. QB Caleb Williams and star WR Mario Williams both followed Riley to USC from Oklahoma. The Trojans also added RB Travis Dye, who transferred in from Oregon. The offense will be loaded in Los Angeles, but the defense still leaves something to be desired.

Rice is coming off a 4-8 season under coach Mike Bloomgren in Conference USA. The Trojans, who also finished 4-8 last season, enter 2022 with a far different outlook than the Owls. Although many teams left C-USA in the offseason, including Marshall and Old Dominion, Rice is still expected to finish near the bottom of the conference standings in 2022.

Money line

PASS. No way does USC (-5000) lose this game, especially in Riley’s Trojans debut. But it’s not wise to back such a huge favorite.

This game is going to be a domination by the better team. USC is hyped for Riley and his troop of talented players he brought with him. Rice will be outmatched in this one.

If it’s close, there is a lot to worry about with USC.

Against the spread

USC -32.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this non-conference tilt.

Caleb Williams and Co. are going to have a field day, and I don’t mean the type of field day we had in elementary school. Although Rice might look as such against the more talented roster of USC.

With the defense of USC being its weak spot, Rice has a chance to get to 20 points. But USC will still cover 32.5 points as 60 is a possibility for the Trojans.

Over/Under

OVER 61.5 (-110) is the way to play this one.

If you are a bit hesitant about the large spread, the Over is a great play in this mismatch as well. Much like Thursday’s Central Michigan at Oklahoma State game, which OK-State won 58-44, this contest is going to get well Over the posted total.

There’s a good chance the Trojans cover this number by themselves. Also consider playing USC team total OVER 47.5 (-112).

The Georgia State Panthers and South Carolina Gamecocks open their 2022 seasons in Columbia Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Georgia State vs. South Carolina odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

South Carolina mainly used 3 different quarterbacks during last season’s 7-6 campaign, which included a 38-21 victory over North Carolina in the Dukes Mayo Bowl. As for 2022, the Gamecocks come into the season with a true starting QB in Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler. Coach Shane Beamer has familiarity with Rattler as he was an assistant head coach with the Sooners before taking the Gamecocks job before the 2021 season.

Both player and coach are hoping Rattler can rejuvenate a career that took a downturn last season when the QB was benched at Oklahoma. This Week 1 matchup against Georgia State is just what the doctor ordered for South Carolina to get off to a good start.

Georgia State returns to the field after an 8-5 season. Since joining the FBS level in 2013, the Panthers, first under coach Bill Curry and now under coach Shawn Elliott, have been a model of consistency. Finishing near the middle or top of the Sun Belt Conference is far different than going into Columbia and beating South Carolina though. This means a close game might not be in the cards here.

STAY AWAY. There’s no value in backing a favorite at -450.

This one could remain close for a while, and it might look like the Panthers will have a chance. But in the second half, the Gamecocks will run away with it. Numbers on the ML this high should not be played.

Against the spread

As mentioned, I expect a slow start, but SOUTH CAROLINA -11.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this contest.

Rattler and a solid defense will do damage in this game against a Georgia State team that will try to run the ball and use game flow to control the clock.

While Rattler and the Gamecocks will be throwing, the Panthers, who run the ball as much as any team outside a service academy, will do just that … and come up short. Don’t get fooled by Georgia State having a better record than South Carolina last season.

Over/Under

UNDER 55.5 (-115) is the screaming play here.

Defense and rushing the ball. These 2 factors will keep this game from hitting the Over. It’s not as strong a play as the South Carolina spread, but it’s close.
