March Madness: Texas vs. Tennessee odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas vs. Tennessee odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The 7th-seeded Texas Longhorns (21-12) take on the 2nd-seeded Tennessee Volunteers (25-8) Saturday in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off from Spectrum Center in Charlotte is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas vs. Tennessee odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Both schools made easy work of their 1st-round opponents in the Midwest Region Thursday, as Texas got past Colorado State 56-44, while Tennessee blasted Saint Peter’s 83-49. The Volunteers outlasted the Longhorns 82-71 in their last meeting Jan. 28, 2023, cashing as 5.5-point home favorites. G Zakai Zeigler, who led the SEC this season with 6 assists per game this season, had a double-double in the win last year with 22 points (3-of-6 from 3) and 10 assists.

Zeigler had 11 points and once again dished out 10 assists in the win over the Peacocks Thursday, becoming the 1st Volunteer to record a points-assists double-double in the NCAA Tournament. G Dalton Knecht, the 2023-24 SEC Player of the Year, led Tennessee with 23 points.

Despite going 1 of 14 from 3-point range as a team, Texas was still able to outlast Colorado State in the 1st round in big part due to a 17-0 points off turnovers advantage. F Brock Cunningham, the winningest player in Texas basketball history, led the way with 3 steals off the bench.

Texas vs. Tennessee picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 75, Texas 71

Moneyline

INCLUDE TENNESSEE ML (-275) IN A PARLAY.

The Vols (-275) shook off the SEC Tournament double-digit loss to Mississippi State by thoroughly dominating Saint Peter’s.

F Jonas Aidoo had 3 blocks in the win over Saint Peter’s, which put him in the top 3 in Tennessee’s single-season block list with 64 so far. Expect the junior to play angry once again and help his team advance to the Sweet 16.

However, I don’t recommend playing Tennessee straight up at this price. Include the Volunteers in a parlay or pass.

Against the spread

BET TEXAS +6.5 (-110).

This is a bit of a hedge as we root for a close game with the hope of Tennessee eeking it out.

This is too many points to give a Texas team, however, that should make more than a single 3-pointer like it did vs. the Rams. Texas coach Rodney Terry still expressed confidence in the scoring ability of F Dylan Disu despite the senior going 0 of 6 from 3 in his last game. Expect Disu to bounce back and play with physicality, as Tennessee coach Rick Barnes predicted, which should help keep the game close.

PASS.

Hard to predict exactly how Texas will respond offensively after the tough 3-point shooting performance vs. Colorado State. Plus, Tennessee features some tough defenders like G Jahmai Mashack as Terry pointed out. How will Longhorns G Max Abmas respond after going 1 of 6 from 3 on Thursday?

March Madness: Colorado State vs. Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Colorado State vs. Texas odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Colorado State Rams (25-10) take on the Texas Longhorns (20-12) in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday. Tip-off from Spectrum Center in Charlotte is set for 6:50 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Colorado State vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Colorado State earned the 10 seed in the Midwest Region by crushing Virginia 67-42 in First Four action Tuesday, easily cashing as a 3-point favorite. Both F Joel Scott (23 points, 11 rebounds) and G Nique Clifford (17, 10) recorded double doubles, and the Rams held the Cavaliers to a paltry 14 of 56 from the field (25 FG%).

No. 7 seed Texas last played March 13, losing 78-74 to Kansas State in the 2nd round of the Big 12 Tournament. G Max Abmas, who leads Texas in scoring (17.1 points per game) and is 2nd in the Big 12 in FT% (91.6), led the Longhorns in defeat with 26 points.

These schools last met back on Dec. 15, 1952, and it was Texas who prevailed 63-46 in Austin. The Longhorns are going for their 3rd straight NCAA Tournament first-round win, while the Rams are back in the Big Dance after missing out last year.

Colorado State vs. Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Colorado State 75, Texas 74

Moneyline

PASS.

Given the aforementioned recent success in the 1st round for this Longhorns team, I would rather take the few points.

Against the spread

BET COLORADO STATE +2.5 (-118).

The Rams led the Mountain West in FT% as a team (75.3), and no one committed more personal fouls per game (3.4) in the Big 12 than Texas F Dylan Disu. CSU also led the MWC in assists per game (17.7), good for 8th-best nationally as well.

Expect the Rams to be able to facilitate the basketball and get it down low, putting themselves in position to potentially get fouled. The Longhorns should play aggressively, since they feature players like G Tyrese Hunter, who Disu has credited with bringing defensive energy and intensity.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

BET OVER 143.5 (-112).

Hunter was a miserable 0 for 7 from the floor in the Big 12 Tournament loss to Kansas State, but in the regular season finale vs. Oklahoma, he finished with a career-high 30 points. Expect a stat line closer to the latter from the junior guard, and this Texas team is definitely a tougher test from an offensive standpoint for the Rams than UVA was.

PASS.

Baylor is the much-better team and is 7-3 in its last 10 matchups with Texas. The Bears are 7-3 in their last 10 games while the Longhorns are only 5-5. However, the Bears are not worth the risk of betting on as -266 favorites. Bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Baylor has covered the spread in back-to-back outings and is 6-3-1 ATS in its last 10 games. The Bears have also covered in consecutive matchups vs. the Longhorns and are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings. BYU at Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU at Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) welcome the BYU Cougars (5-2, 2-2) to DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the BYU vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Longhorns beat the Houston Cougars on the road 31-24 Saturday, but failed to cover as a 23.5-point favorite. Texas is 2-1 against the spread (ATS) at home this season, winning and covering its last home game in a 40-14 throttling of the Kansas Jayhawks. Led by QB Quinn Ewers, who has 1,915 passing yards and 18 TDs. Texas is No. 7 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

BYU beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 27-14 at home in Week 8, covering as a 3-point home underdog. The Cougars are 3-4 ATS this season and both 1-2 ATS and straight up on the road. BYU is led by QB Kedon Slovis, who has 15 TDs this season. The Cougars’ weakness is their defense, having allowed 35-plus points in 2 of their last 4 games.

BYU at Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 38, BYU 17

Moneyline

PASS.

Nothing to see here. Texas is far too expensive to win outright. Similarly, BYU hasn’t been good enough to consider its +700 a good value.

Against the spread

LEAN TEXAS -19.5 (-105).

BYU has struggled on the road and against Big 12 teams. It did beat Cincinnati and Texas Tech, both games at home. In other Big 12 action, it lost 44-11 at TCU and 38-27 at Kansas, failing to cover in both. Texas will post the most difficult challenge yet.

The Longhorns are 1-2 ATS at home but 1-0 ATS at home against a conference opponent. It beat Kansas at home by 26 while Kansas beat BYU at home by 11. With that in mind, Texas, at home, should be able to get out early against a BYU team that has struggled mightily in road conference games.

Take TEXAS -19.5 (-105).

Over/Under

BET OVER 50.5 (-110).

Texas is 2-5 O/U while BYU is 5-2 O/U.

BYU is 3-1 O/U in conference games, scoring 27 or more in 3 of 4 and allowing 37 or more in 3 of 4 as well. Texas has scored at least 30 in all 4 conference games, and it should be able to score quickly against a lacking BYU defense.

Texas at Houston odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Texas at Houston odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Texas Longhorns (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) and Houston Cougars (3-3, 1-2) meet Saturday. Kick from TDECU Stadium is set for 4 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas vs. Houston odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Texas had a bye last week after losing its previous game 34-30 to Oklahoma. In that game, QB Quinn Ewers went 31 of 37 for 346 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. On the ground, RB Jonathon Brooks had 22 carriers for 129 yards and a TD. An Oklahoma TD with 15 seconds left put the nail in the coffin for the Longhorns.

Houston is also coming off an extended break after beating West Virginia 41-39 to cover as a 3-point home underdog Oct. 12. QB Donovan Smith went 21 of 27 for 253 yards and 4 TDs in the victory with his top target being WR Stephon Johnson who had 4 receptions for 96 yards and 2 TDs. Johnson caught the 49-yard last-second heave to win the game after West Virginia previously scored with just 12 seconds left.

Texas at Houston picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 38, Houston 21

Moneyline

PASS.

At -2500 odds, there is no profit to be made betting on Texas who should be expected to win on Saturday without difficulty.

Against the spread

LEAN HOUSTON +23.5 (-110).

While Texas is the rightful heavy favorite, any spread more than 20 points is risky to bet on. Texas has tendencies to score a lot of points while holding its opponents to few points, but expect Smith and the Cougars to find the endzone and put up a fight. With Houston playing at home, where it is 3-1, it should be expected to cover the spread.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 61.5 (-110).

Houston should find the endzone a few times in this matchup, but its defense will not be able to hold back Texas who has scored at least 30 points in all 6 of its games. The majority of the points would fall on Texas to eclipse 62 points for Over bettors, which is not likely considering its offense has not scored more than 40 points in a game this season.

Oklahoma vs. Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Oklahoma vs. Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) and No. 4 Texas Longhorns (5-0, 2-0) renew their age-old rivalry Saturday. Kickoff from Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, is at noon ET (ABC).  Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Oklahoma vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The OU-UT rivalry — they’ve played in the Cotton Bowl every year since 1929 — dates all the way back to 1900. In 118 all-time series games, Texas leads 63-50-5. Oklahoma had won 4 in a row in this series until falling 49-0 in last year’s game. The shutout was the first in the series since 2004.

Texas clocked a 40-14 win over Kansas last Saturday, covering as a 16.5-point favorite. A UT offense ranked 17th in the nation (478.4 YPG) cranked out 661 yards against an upstart Jayhawk team which had been 4-0 until the rout in Austin. In last year’s rout over the Sooners, UT scored in every quarter and outgained OU 585 yards to 195.

The Sooners are No. 12 and the Longhorns are No. 4 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Oklahoma vs. Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 31, Oklahoma 28

Moneyline

Give Oklahoma a near-one-third probability to win this contest outright. The Sooners are the lean, but only an actionable one north of +200.

PASS.

Against the spread

The Sooners have played the lesser of these two schedules, but 2nd-year coach Brent Venables has the OU defense performing much better through 5 games this fall.

Oklahoma has allowed just 3.2 yards per carry; look for a contest with both teams struggling to run the ball. Both teams are above-average in producing explosive plays in passing-down situations, but the OU defense has been more adept at creating some havoc plays.

Expect the Sooners to have a good enough chance of hanging around with a 3-point deficit and to want to get a measure of retribution after last year’s embarrassment, which was in large measure due to injuries at the quarterback position.

 BACK OKLAHOMA +5.5 (-110).

Oklahoma vs. Texas head-to-head

The OU-UT rivalry — played in the Cotton Bowl every year since 1929 — dates all the way back to 1900. In a 118-game all-time series which also includes 1 Big 12 Championship Game (2018), Texas leads 63-50-5.

The Longhorns won last year’s meeting 49-0, marking the 1st shutout in the series since 2004 and the largest margin of victory (49) points since 2003. UT scored in every quarter and out-gained OU 585 yards to 195. The victory snapped a 4-game series losing streak for the Longhorns.

UT was favored by 7.5 points last year. The ATS win marked the Longhorns’ 8th in the last 11 meetings.

Kansas at Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Kansas at Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) and No. 5 Texas Longhorns (4-0, 1-0) meet Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Kansas vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Kansas covered the spread as a 9-point home favorite with a 38-27 win vs. the BYU Cougars as the Over (56.5) hit last Saturday. QB Jalon Daniels threw 3 TDs, and Kansas’ defense scored twice.

Texas covered as a 17.5-point favorite with a 38-6 win at the Baylor Bears as the Under (49) cashed last Saturday. QB Quinn Ewers finished 18-of-23 passing for 293 yards with a TD and rushed for another score.

The last time these teams met, Texas covered as a 9-point road favorite with a 55-14 win as the Over (63.5) hit Nov. 19, 2022.

Texas is No. 5 and Kansas is No. 24 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Kansas at Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 38, Kansas 16

Moneyline

The Longhorns (-800) are pretty much a lock at home to beat any team ranked beneath them, but most bettors don’t want to risk $800 to win $100.

PASS. Lay the points and/or bet the total instead.

Against the spread

Texas is a legitimate threat to win the National Championship this year and is tied with the Ohio State Buckeyes for the 4th-best odds at +900. Ewers is playing like a top-3 QB in the nation, and Texas’ defense is allowing just 12.5 points per game.

This will be Kansas’ 1st real test of the season, and I’m not confident in its ability to keep this game close after barely covering vs. BYU and struggling as a 28-point road favorite in a 31-24 win at the Nevada Wolf Pack the week before.

BET TEXAS -16.5 (-110).

Over/Under

The Under is 3-1 in Longhorns games this season as Texas’ defense continues to bully opponents. Kansas has put up an average of 37.8 points per game this season but has only faced inferior competition. This should be a reality check for the Jayhawks, who needed multiple TDs from their defense last week just to cover by 2 points.

BET UNDER 61.5 (-110).

Texas at Baylor odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas at Baylor odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 6 Texas Longhorns (3-0) take on the Baylor Bears (1-2) on Saturday at McLane Stadium in the Big 12 opener for both  teams. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Texas vs. Baylor odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Longhorns failed to cover as 30.5-point home favorites in their 31-10 win over Wyoming in Week 3 as the Under (48.5) cashed. Texas needed a 21-point 4th quarter to win the game.

The Bears secured their 1st win of the season in Week 3, beating LIU 30-7, but not covering as 45-point home favorites as the Under (53.5) cashed. Baylor is set to play its 4th straight home game to begin the season.

Texas at Baylor picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 30, Baylor 17

Moneyline

Even with Texas being heavily favored in Saturday’s Big 12 matchup, AVOID the moneyline in this game. Taking the Longhorns at -650 odds isn’t advised given the minimal profit you’ll receive if they win.

Against the spread

BAYLOR +14.5 (-110) is the play in this game despite the Bears struggling through the 1st 3 weeks. Texas and Baylor are both playing its 1st conference game of the season, and the Bears can keep it closer than expected at home.

At the same time, the Longhorns needed 21 points in the 4th quarter of last week’s game just to beat Wyoming at home. Texas could have still been looking back at its win over Alabama in Week 2, but it’ll be interesting to see how the Longhorns respond on Saturday.

Over/Under

UNDER 49.5 (-110) is the pick in this game as Baylor’s offense has looked inconsistent to begin the season. Even QB Quinn Ewers looked out of sorts for Texas last week, completing only 11 of his 21 attempts for 131 yards and 2 TDs.

Texas and Baylor are a combined 2-4 to the Over in the 1st 3 weeks of the season. Plus, the Over is 1-9 in the last 10 meetings overall.
