Georgia State lost its lone game Sept. 30, a disappointing 28-7 setback at home against Troy. The Panthers then had a bye week, and they have since bounced back with back-to-back impressive victories. Most recently, Georgia State clocked a 20-17 road win at Louisiana as a 3-point underdog on Saturday.

The Eagles pass more than any team in FBS; they have averaged 48.9 aerial attempts per game so far this season. On Saturday, Georgia Southern beat Louisiana-Monroe 38-28 (as a -16.5 favorite). The Eagles were up big early and went more to the run against ULM. They finished with 242 passing yards, a couple clicks south of their 318.7-yard average (12th FBS).

Moneyline

State beat Southern 41-33 a year ago, but this Eagles team is efficient and versatile and perhaps a bit unlucky to be averaging 32.3 points per game when more than a few indicators trend higher.

Georgia Southern is a lean, but PASS unless a better price pops up here.

Against the spread

Georgia Southern is quite good against the rush, and that could be problematic for the Panthers. Two of Georgia State’s last 3 losses (vs. Troy this season and Appalachian State last fall) have come against teams that figure as top-quartile against the run.

In many camps, State gets a green check next to its 41-27 Oct. 14 win over a now 4-2 Marshall team. But that game was dead even statistically, and the Panthers went into the 4th quarter leading 27-24.

In last year’s meeting, Georgia State was a plus-4 in turnover margin and managed a couple key, short-field scores.

Look for revenge-minded Georgia Southern to really work an advantage in the passing game on a good-weather evening in eastern Georgia.

Moneyline

MARSHALL (-105) is the play on the road at Center Parc Stadium, formerly Turner Field, the home of the Atlanta Braves from 1997 to 2016. The Thundering Herd played an amazing, high-scoring game at NC State last weekend, taking Power 5 NC State the distance, before eventually falling by one score.

Georgia State, on the other hand, was pounded on its home field by Troy in a conference game. Not good. The Panthers had scored 30 or more points in the first 4 games, which is impressive on the surface, but that occurred against Rhode Island of the FCS, UConn, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina, not exactly a murderer’s row of college teams.

Against the spread

MARSHALL +1.5 (-110) won’t cost you much more juice, and it gives you a little bit of wiggle room, in the event Georgia State is able to pick up a 1-point victory.

However, there isn’t a big difference in the moneyline and spread, so why pay more if you don’t have to, especially when the difference is fairly negligible?

Over/Under

OVER 53.5 (-115) might be the best play on the board, especially based on Marshall’s crazy, video game-like loss at NC State. Georgia State has allowed 23.3 PPG across the past 3 games, while the offense has scored 30 or more points in 4 of 5 outings this season for the Panthers.

Marshall was good for exactly 41 points in each of the past 2 games, while allowing 41.5 PPG in the same span, nearly taking care of the Over on its own. Go high, and feel confident in doing so.

The Panthers have cashed the Over in all 3 outings and the only game they failed to cover the spread was in Week 1 as 18-point favorites in a 42-35 victory vs. Rhode Island.

Coastal Carolina suffered a 27-13 loss to UCLA as a 15.5-point underdog in its opener but has won each of its last 2 outings. The Chanticleers have come on strong the past 2 weeks, winning by a total of 96-23 and covering as favorites in both games. They picked up a 66-7 victory over Duquesne as 34.5-point favorites last time out on Saturday.

While Coastal Carolina has already played a challenging opponent in UCLA, this will be the first true test for Georgia State in the early season.

AVOID.

QB Grayson McCall is not having his prototypical season for the Chanticleers, but he has still been effective under new coach Todd Beck. Coastal Carolina (-275) will be able to control the pace and squeeze the life out of Georgia State, but this line is too steep to wager.

Against the spread

BET GEORGIA STATE +6.5 (-102), although if you wait until closer to kickoff you might get this at +7, which would be even better.

The Panthers have been dominating opponents this season. While Coastal Carolina is far better than its previous opponents, it should not be a nearly a full-touchdown underdog.

Both teams will look to run the ball heavily and this will limit the possessions, which makes a large spread less likely to cover.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 62.5 (-110).

Neither Coastal Carolina nor Georgia State have been giving up many points on defense this season. While both squads have solid offenses, their strengths are the run game and this will shorten the game much like a matchup of service academies.

Despite CCU scoring 66 Saturday against Duquesne, this was the only game in which it has cashed the Over. The defense should perform well at home once again and limit the Panthers offense enough to keep this game Under.

Coach Shawn Elliott and the Georgia State Panthers struggled out of the gate with an 0-4 start. But then they won at Army 31-14 Oct. 1 and defeated visiting Georgia Southern 41-33 Oct. 8 heading into last week’s bye. The Panthers hope this is the start of a successful second half of the season.

Appalachian State is 2-2 after shocking then-No. 6 Texas A&M 17-14 on the road Sept. 10. The Mountaineers followed that with a 32-28 thrilling victory over visiting Troy but then lost at home to James Madison 32-28 Sept. 24. As if it couldn’t get any worse, it did. The Mountaineers lost as 19-point favorites in the next game, falling at Texas State 36-24 Oct. 8 before having last week off.

Both Sun Belt teams need this game to get things right as they continue the conference portion of their seasons.

Appalachian State has played games in many fashions this season. Against North Carolina, it lost a high scoring thriller 63-61 in its opener. That game was followed up by the signature victory at Texas A&M.

Whether it be low scoring or a shootout, the Mountaineers have been playing games close. Another close game is on the horizon in this Sun Belt matchup. A spread of 10.5 is too many points.

TAKE GEORGIA STATE +9.5 (-107) … but keep in mind that Appalachian State is 6-2 ATS in this all-time series.

Over/Under

OVER 58.5 (-115) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this game.

Both teams can score. Georgia State is 3-3 O/U and Appalachian State is 4-2.

The Over has cashed tickets in 3 of the last 4 meetings between these two. The one outlying game was a 17-13 win by App State in 2020.

Georgia State averages 29.8 points per game and yields 33.3 PPG.

Appalachian State scores 35.2 PPG and surrenders 28.8 PPG.

I expect OVER 58.5 (-110) to be an easy wager.

COASTAL CAROLINA (-130) is the play here. Why go against tradition?

It’s odd that in 5 all-time meetings the road team has won each time, but it is set up for the 6th outing to go exactly that way here. CCU is unbeaten at 3-0 SU, while Georgia State is winless in 3 tries.

Against the spread

COASTAL CAROLINA -2.5 (-105) is worth playing here, especially since the line is under a flat three. However, to put in a sweat here, Georgia State can move the ball despite being winless. It came up short in a 42-41 loss at home to Charlotte last weekend, and 35-28 against North Carolina 2 weeks ago.

The Panthers rank 17th in the nation with 231.3 rushing yards per game, and they go for a healthy 444.7 total yards per contest and 27.7 PPG. The problem for GSU is that it cannot get defensive stops, and it has allowed 424.7 total yards per game and a ridiculous 37.3 PPG.

Over/Under

The OVER 61.5 (-112) is the play in Thursday’s Sun Belt Fun Belt action.

While Coastal has cashed the Under in 5 straight on the road, the Over is 6-1 in its previous 7 on the road against losing teams and it’s 18-5 in the previous 23 in September.

For Georgia State, the Over has hit in 4 of its last 5 Thursday appearances.

South Carolina mainly used 3 different quarterbacks during last season’s 7-6 campaign, which included a 38-21 victory over North Carolina in the Dukes Mayo Bowl. As for 2022, the Gamecocks come into the season with a true starting QB in Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler. Coach Shane Beamer has familiarity with Rattler as he was an assistant head coach with the Sooners before taking the Gamecocks job before the 2021 season.

Both player and coach are hoping Rattler can rejuvenate a career that took a downturn last season when the QB was benched at Oklahoma. This Week 1 matchup against Georgia State is just what the doctor ordered for South Carolina to get off to a good start.

Georgia State returns to the field after an 8-5 season. Since joining the FBS level in 2013, the Panthers, first under coach Bill Curry and now under coach Shawn Elliott, have been a model of consistency. Finishing near the middle or top of the Sun Belt Conference is far different than going into Columbia and beating South Carolina though. This means a close game might not be in the cards here.

STAY AWAY. There’s no value in backing a favorite at -450.

This one could remain close for a while, and it might look like the Panthers will have a chance. But in the second half, the Gamecocks will run away with it. Numbers on the ML this high should not be played.

Against the spread

As mentioned, I expect a slow start, but SOUTH CAROLINA -11.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this contest.

Rattler and a solid defense will do damage in this game against a Georgia State team that will try to run the ball and use game flow to control the clock.

While Rattler and the Gamecocks will be throwing, the Panthers, who run the ball as much as any team outside a service academy, will do just that … and come up short. Don’t get fooled by Georgia State having a better record than South Carolina last season.

Over/Under

UNDER 55.5 (-115) is the screaming play here.

Defense and rushing the ball. These 2 factors will keep this game from hitting the Over. It’s not as strong a play as the South Carolina spread, but it’s close.

The Pirates will try to do the unthinkable — conquer the top-seeded Bulldogs. Gonzaga is the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament so Georgia State will have its work cut out.

The Pirates rank 152nd in the nation per Kenpom. Their strength is defensively, with the 115th-ranked defensive efficiency. George State won 3 games by single digits in the Sub Belt to earn a tournament berth.

As for Gonzaga, last year’s tournament runnerup is among the betting  favorites to win it all behind F Drew Timme and potential No. 1 overall pick C Chet Holmgren.

The Zags rank first in the nation in points per game (88.3) and second in field goal percentage. It also ranks third in opponents’ field goal percentage, so they’re a dominant group coached by the experienced Mark Few.

Don’t bet any -5000 money line. Along those lines, one should also note it seems impossible that Georgia State pulls off the upset despite Virginia going down as a No. 1 seed in 2018.

Against the spread

LEAN to GONZAGA -22.5 (-115).

Gonzaga is 1-2 ATS when favored by 20-30 points, a position the Bulldogs were in during the beginning of the season.

The Bulldogs have the No. 1 adjusted offensive efficiency and No. 7 adjusted defensive efficiency. They’re that good, and this should be the start of a dominating stretch of games.

The size should be the most telling factor. Georgia State has only one player over 6-foot-9. That’s going to be a problem. The Bulldogs have 2 players that stand over 6-foot-10 and get big-time minutes.

Timme and Holmgren are going to dominate the paint and should help rack up the score.

Over/Under

BET on the UNDER 149.5 (-112).

The Zags’ offense has been so good that its games typically get higher totals, but if there’s one thing that both teams are good at it’s not hitting the projected total.

Georgia State is stronger defensively which could limit Gonzaga’s looks. GSU is 8-17 O/U this season while the Zags are 12-17 O/U.

Given that Gonzaga will slow the pace when they’re up big, I expect a slow-paced game in the second half, one that helps the Under hit.

Money line

Georgia State (-210) will cost you more than two times your potential return, and that’s a little too expensive despite the fact the crowd should be a pro-Panthers crowd with the closer proximity to Atlanta.

Still, PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

Play GEORGIA STATE -5.5 (-112) in their fifth-ever bowl game. The Panthers enter as the hotter team with three wins in a row and they picked up a victory in the LendingTree Bowl last season. This is a team that knows how to win.

Ball State is 1-4 ATS in the past five bowl games, and it limps in with just two wins in its last five games overall while going 1-4 ATS.

Over/Under

The UNDER 50.5 (-108) is the play in this bowl game — even though it’s been an Over-fest in postseason games to date.

Ball State cashed the Under in each of its final five games of the regular season, and the Cardinals scored 20 or fewer points in six of their last 11 games. This isn’t a high-octane offense.

The Panthers played Louisiana tough on the road last week as they fell 21-17 and covered a 13.5-point number. Georgia State is 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS across its last four, getting themselves right back in the hunt for a bowl bid.

The Chanticleers pecked out a 28-8 win in the rain at Georgia Southern last week, beginning life after QB Grayson McCall, who may be done for the season due to a shoulder injury. The offense had a different look behind the play of QB Bryce Carpenter as they rushed for 220 yards and had just 85 yards through the air.

Money line

Coastal Carolina still has some impressive offense pieces, but the loss of McCall is a huge one as it changes the complexion of the team. The weather conditions in Statesboro last week might have created a need for a more ground-based attack, but I don’t like what I saw from the Chants one bit.

Georgia State is 0-11 SU all-time against ranked teams, so an outright win is not likely.

PASS and look to the spread.

Against the spread

GEORGIA STATE +10.5 (-112) has been on a roll lately, and I wouldn’t be shocked in the least to see the Panthers win this one outright. That’s how well they’ve been playing lately, and QB Darren Grainger is from Conway, S.C., so this will be a homecoming and he’ll look to show the Chanticleers what they missed by not recruiting him. The chip on the shoulder aspect is always nice.

The Panthers have covered four straight overall, four straight on the road, and five of their last six against winning teams. The road team is also a perfect 4-0 ATS in the last four in this series.

Over/Under

The UNDER 51.5 (-105) is the lean, but only with a small-unit play.

I’d like to see Carpenter under center a little more as a starter this season, and a home game with ideal weather conditions will give us a better understanding of what he brings to the table. We’ve seen him plenty in the past, before the rise of McCall. CCU ran a lot last week, perhaps due to the rain, and the pass game wasn’t sharp at all.

Georgia State has won three in a row and has rallied after a 1-4 start to the season. The Panthers scored a go-ahead touchdown with 26 seconds remaining Saturday at Georgia Southern to earn a 21-14 victory. Georgia State has allowed just 51 combined points over its three straight wins.

The Cajuns are on their own winning streak as they’ve won seven games in a row. Louisiana is 14-1 over its last 15 games and it won its last seven games of the 2020 season. UL clocked a 45-0 win over Texas State Saturday as it more than doubled up the Bobcats in total yards, 425-205.

PASS on the wide disparity between the underdog and favorite tags here. Figure the true odds — perhaps Louisiana near 80%, or -400 — as being obscured in between.

Against the spread

The home team is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five GSU-UL series meetings.

Georgia State looks to be getting too much credit for its win over Georgia Southern. The Panthers handily lost the yardage battle while winning the turnover exchange in that one.

Louisiana is good enough on both sides of the ball to build a two-score lead in the opening half. GSU doesn’t have the passing game to make a comeback, and the Cajuns have the running game to ice a cushion late. The Cajuns have covered the spread by at least 15 points in three consecutive home games, and the short week figures to favor the home side here.

BACK LOUISIANA -12.5 (-115).

Over/Under

Consider a partial-unit play on the OVER 53.5 (-112). The upside hit in last year’s game when it was set at 57.5. Both offenses are trending the right way. The lean is a small one, however.
