Rice at Charlotte odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Rice at Charlotte odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Rice Owls (11-18, 5-11 American) and Charlotte 49ers (17-11, 11-5) meet Wednesday at the Dale F. Halton Arena in Charlotte. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Rice vs. Charlotte odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

The Owls have had a hard time in the past week, losing by at least 21 points at home against Temple and on the road at Wichita State. Prior to that, Rice beat UAB on the road and East Carolina at home by at least 18 points. So which Rice team will show up in Charlotte?

These teams met in Houston back on Jan. 16, with Rice covering as a 2.5-point underdogs at most shops in the 81-79 OT loss as the Over (137) easily connected.

The 49ers were in contention for the AAC title at one point, but Charlotte had a rough February, and it continued into the 1st game of March. Charlotte has dropped the past 3 games at Memphis, at Tulsa and home to South Florida, while going just 1-6 against the spread (ATS) in the past 7 outings.

Rice at Charlotte picks and predictions

Prediction

Charlotte 67, Rice 64

Moneyline

Charlotte (-300) will cost you 3 times your potential return, and that’s way too risky for a team entering on a 3-game losing streak. While losses on the road to Memphis, and at home to South Florida, can certainly be excused, the loss to Tulsa is a head scratcher. If it can lose to a subpar Tulsa team, Charlotte can lose to anybody.

PASS.

Against the spread

RICE +7.5 (-115) suffered a narrow loss in overtime at home against Charlotte -7.5 (-105) in the 1st meeting, and it’s likely to suffer a similar fate in the Queen City.

The Owls have won just twice in the past 7 outings, and they have been one of the Jekyll and Hyde teams of the AAC in the past few weeks. Some games, Rice looks like a world beater, including a 23-point win at UAB as an 11-point underdog, and other times it looks like a last-place team, like the 22-point loss at home to a bad Temple team as a 5-point favorite. Still, when they faced the 49ers earlier, the Owls brought their ‘A’ game, and Rice should be able to keep within 3 buckets in this game.

Over/Under

UNDER 134.5 (-115) is worth a look, as both of these teams have been going low lately.

Charlotte has cashed the Under in 3 of the past 4 outings, scoring 67 or fewer points in 3 of the contests. The 49ers have split the Over-Under 3-3 in the past 6 at Halton Arena.

Rice has averaged just 54.5 PPG across the past 2 games, and it has scored 69 or fewer points in 4 of the past 7 outings.

Tulane at Rice odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Tulane at Rice odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Tulane Green Wave (6-1, 3-0 AAC) and Rice Owls (4-3, 2-1) meet Saturday at Rice Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Tulane vs. Rice odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Green Wave have rattled off 5 straight wins since a lone setback at Ole Miss back on Sept. 9. However, Tulane has managed to cover just once in the past 4 outings, although it is 2-0 against the spread (ATS) on the road this season.

Rice gave the Tulsa Golden Hurricane a 42-10 shellacking in their place last week, and it is a healthy 5-2 ATS in 7 games overall. As an underdog, Rice is 2-0 ATS, with an outright win as a 7-point ‘dog against Houston on Sept. 9. The Over is on a 5-1 run for the Owls, too.

Tulane is No. 23 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 55 (O: -105 | U: -115)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Tulane at Rice picks and predictions

Prediction

Tulane 34, Rice 29

Moneyline

Tulane (-400) will cost you 4 times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk, especially on the road in a conference game. Rice (+300) has 3 losses overall, but it is capable of hanging in a shootout with plenty of offensive weapons.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

RICE +10 (-110) catching double digits is a lot. Take advantage.

While Tulane -10 (-110) is 6-1 straight up (SU), it has covered just twice in the past 6 games overall, and it is 0-3 ATS in 3 games as a double-digit favorite this season.

For Rice, it does have an inexplicable home loss to UConn. However, it has covered 3 of 4 games overall at home.

Over/Under

OVER 55 (-105) may be the best play on the board.

The Over has connected in 5 of the past 6 games for Rice, and it’s the pass game which drives the offense. The well-traveled QB JT Daniels has helped Rice rank 12th in passing yards per game (319.9), while racking up 34.0 PPG. While Tulane is very good against the run, it ranks 118th against the pass (263.1 yards per game), which is Rice’s strength. That’s what will keep the Owls in this high-scoring game.

Rice at Tulsa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Rice at Tulsa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (3-3, 1-1 AAC) welcome the Rice Owls (3-3, 1-1) to Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Rice vs. Tulsa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Tulsa had a bye in Week 7. The Golden Hurricane lost on the road 20-17 to Florida Atlantic in Week 6, failing to cover as a 2.5-point underdog. Tulsa is 2-1 at home this season and 1-2 against the spread (ATS) and 2-3-1 ATS overall.  QB Cardell Williams is the main threat for this offense, totaling 955 passing yards and 8 TDs in 6 games.

Rice, which lost to UConn 38-31 in Week 6 as a 10-point home favorite, also had a Week 7 bye.. The Owls are 4-2 ATS this season and 1-1 ATS on the road. QB JT Daniels is the star of the show for the Owls, throwing for 1,831 passing yards and 15 TDs in 6 games.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 58.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Rice at Tulsa picks and predictions

Prediction

Rice 31, Tulsa 28

Moneyline

BET RICE (+135).

Rice is 1-0 straight up and ATS as an underdog of 7 or fewer points. It beat Houston 43-41, covering as a 7-point underdog in Week 2. While it did lose to UConn, the Owls have the far more competent quarterback who has a 15-5 TD-to-INT ratio.

Tulsa has scored 25 or fewer points in 4 of 6 games and has scored 22 or fewer in 2 of its last 3. Williams has 8 TDs and 7 INTs which shouldn’t give bettors much confidence. For the value, take RICE (+135).

Against the spread

PASS.

Rice is 0-2 straight up on the road and has lost those games by 13 and 27. With this spread just a field goal, the value here is on Rice to win outright. Tulsa is 2-1 at home as well with its only loss to top-ten Oklahoma in Week 3.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 58.5 (-110).

Tulsa is 2-4 O/U this season and has alternated going Over and Under since losing 43-10 to Washington in Week 2, a game that went Under the 66 total. It is primed for an Over given those trends.

Rice’s defense has also allowed 37 or more points in 4 of 6 games. It has gone Over in 4 of its last 5 games and has a competent offense and a hole-filled defense.

Couple the 2 and Tulsa’s trends and back the OVER 58.5 (-110).

Rice at Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Rice at Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Rice Owls are set to take on the No. 12 Texas Longhorns in Week 1 of the college football season on Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Rice vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Owls finished with a 5-8 record in 2022 and coach Mike Bloomgren is entering his 6th year at the helm. Rice is also making the transition to the AAC this season and things aren’t going to be any easier with a season opener on the road against Texas.

Expectations are somewhat high for the Longhorns as they look to improve on an 8-5 record in 2022 as coach Steve Sarkisian enters his 3rd year with the program. QB Quinn Ewers returns as the starter under center, which has many expecting the Longhorns’ offense to take a leap forward this season. Texas is the No. 12 ranked team in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

Rice at Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 58, Rice 14

Moneyline

Even though the Longhorns should win with ease on Saturday, just AVOID wagering on the moneyline in this game. Betting on a team at -10000 odds isn’t advised as the return isn’t nearly worth the risk.

Against the spread

TEXAS 35.5 (-110) is the play in this game as the Longhorns look to get off to a blazing start in 2023. A season ago, Texas registered 34.5 points per game (20th in the nation) and were 5-2 ATS in home games.

Over/Under

BET OVER 58.5 (-110).

It wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Longhorns hit the Over themselves as Ewers and the offense are looking to build off of last season. Scoring points may not be easy for the Owls early in the contest, but they’ll get some garbage time scores late in the game to ensure the Over is achieved.

While Texas was 6-7 to the Over in 2022, Rice was 9-4 to the Over. On top of that, the Owls surrendered 36.2 points per game a season ago, which was the 11th-worst mark in the nation.

FAU at Rice odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s FAU at Rice odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The FAU Owls (26-3, 16-2 C-USA) and Rice Owls (17-12, 8-10) meet Thursday at the Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the FAU vs. Rice game odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

FAU wrapped up its 1st Conference USA regular-season title with a 75-49 win last time out over UTEP in Boca Raton on Saturday. The Owls have struggled against the number lately, going 3-5 ATS in the last 8 games overall, although it did cash in the last 2 outings.

Rice suffered a 90-81 loss to FAU in South Florida on Feb. 9, although it did cover a 13.5-point number as the Over connected. Rice has dropped 3 of the last 4 games overall, while also going 1-3 ATS during the span.

FAU at Rice picks and predictions

Prediction

FAU 81, Rice 77

Moneyline

FAU isn’t worth pursuing as an expensive heavy favorite.

PASS.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

RICE +8.5 (-105) is worth a look on its home floor in this battle of Owls.

FAU -8.5 (-115) has the Conference USA title wrapped up, as well as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tourney, so it remains to be seen how motivated FAU will be in the final 2 games.

Rice still has a chance to leapfrog Charlotte for the 5th seed in the upcoming C-USA tournament, and a signature win over the conference champ would give it plenty of momentum going forward.

Over/Under

OVER 154.5 (-105) is worth playing lightly, but go a half-unit at most.

The Over has cashed at a 3-1-1 clip in the last 5 games overall for FAU, while going 20-9-2 in the past 31 road games against teams with a winning home record.

For Rice, the Over is on a 15-5 run in the last 20 games, while going 6-1 in the last 7 games after a straight-up loss, and 6-1 in the last 7 following a non-cover, too.

Lending Tree Bowl: Rice vs. Southern Miss odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Rice vs. Southern Miss odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rice Owls (5-7) take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (6-6) Saturday in the Lending Tree Bowl. Kickoff from Hancock Whitney Stadium is at 5:45 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rice vs. Southern Miss odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Golden Eagles joined the Sunbelt conference this season as a dark horse candidate to win the conference title. They came up short of this goal but were still able to get to a bowl game. They know Rice well and have played in 8 seasons in a row prior to this game as members of Conference USA.

Rice comes into this game as the only team with a losing record to make a game this season. At 5-7, the academic aptitude of the Rice Owl roster meant that their APR was the highest in the country for those teams vying for the left-over bowl slot. Now they get to get 15 extra practices and a small paycheck to play in this game. While this is not an extraordinary game, any football is good football. Especially with the end of the season coming soon. So, watch and try to enjoy.

Rice vs. Southern Miss picks and predictions

Prediction

Southern Miss 27, Rice 13

Moneyline

PASS.

This game, despite the records being close, is a mismatch. Rice is down to its 4th-string QB and Southern Miss (-260) and RB Frank Gore Jr. will be able to move the ball easily against this team while limiting the offense. However, the price tag in this one is not worth the wager.

Against the spread

BET SOUTHERN MISS -6.5 (-110).

This is an easy call. Rice comes in as losers of 4 straight games and with a 4th string QB under center. I would barely trust an Alabama 4th String QB let alone one from Rice. The Golden Eagles will win and win big — SOUTHERN MISS -6.5 (-110) is my favorite play in this game.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 45.5 (-113).

Southern Miss can score a bit, but can Rice? This is the reason I am looking Under 45.5 in this game. Rice has been destroyed by injury and I do not see it being able to move the ball well.

The Owls could get to double-digit points — but not much more. I think this will be a game of coasting for the Golden Eagles. If they want to get to 40, they can, but I think they will get to the mid 20s and cruise which makes me lean UNDER 45.5 (-113).

Rice at Texas odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Rice at Texas odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rice Owls (6-2) and No. 2 Texas Longhorns (7-1) get together for an instate battle on Monday in Austin. Tip at Moody Center will be at 8 p.m. ET (Longhorn Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Rice vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the Dec. 5 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Rice has won 5 games in a row but is coming off an 8-day layoff. The Owls have not played since winning 83-71 at Texas State as 5-point underdogs Dec. 4. KenPom rates the Rice schedule thus far as 327th in the nation.

The Longhorns lost for the 1st time Tuesday, falling 85-78 in overtime to No. 17 Illinois. Texas bounced back by covering a 36.5-point spread in a 88-43 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday. UT shot a season-high 56.9% from the floor in the win.

Rice at Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 80, Rice 55

Moneyline

True odds figure to be buried in the wide expanse between these 2 prices.

PASS.

Against the spread

A Rice roster relying on a lot of juniors is likely better than the team that lost 4 Quad 1 games by an average of 28.0 points a year ago. However, it’s also an Owls squad that has played a weak slate so far and one getting its 1st taste of the kind of talent they’ll see pouring onto the floor from the other bench in this contest.

Texas is a lean worth a partial-unit play at -23.5 (-110) or better.

PASS OTHERWISE.

Over/Under

The Under is 4-1 in Rice’s last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, and the Under is 4-1 in the Longhorns’ last 5 overall, too.

Texas focused in on a slower-tempo game — against fast-paced Arkansas-Pine Bluff — in response to its loss to Illinois. Rice counts on 3-points as a big chunk of its offense, but the Owls will be up against a Texas five that has held opposing shooters to a lowly 26.8% mark from beyond the arc (15th NCAA-I). Rice also has a high free-throw rate that does not figure to be as much in play in this contest.

Add in some expected shooting regression for 2 teams knocking down more than 58% of their 2-point looks, and the UNDER 142.5 (-105) is the play here.

Rice at USC odds, picks, and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Rice at USC odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rice Owls and the USC Trojans open their seasons Saturday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff (Pac-12 Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rice vs. USC odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

USC, No.15 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, hopes to start the Lincoln Riley era with a victory – Riley was hired away from Oklahoma last November. QB Caleb Williams and star WR Mario Williams both followed Riley to USC from Oklahoma. The Trojans also added RB Travis Dye, who transferred in from Oregon. The offense will be loaded in Los Angeles, but the defense still leaves something to be desired.

Rice is coming off a 4-8 season under coach Mike Bloomgren in Conference USA. The Trojans, who also finished 4-8 last season, enter 2022 with a far different outlook than the Owls. Although many teams left C-USA in the offseason, including Marshall and Old Dominion, Rice is still expected to finish near the bottom of the conference standings in 2022.

Rice at USC picks and predictions

Prediction

USC 56, Rice 20

Money line

PASS. No way does USC (-5000) lose this game, especially in Riley’s Trojans debut. But it’s not wise to back such a huge favorite.

This game is going to be a domination by the better team. USC is hyped for Riley and his troop of talented players he brought with him. Rice will be outmatched in this one.

If it’s close, there is a lot to worry about with USC.

Against the spread

USC -32.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this non-conference tilt.

Caleb Williams and Co. are going to have a field day, and I don’t mean the type of field day we had in elementary school. Although Rice might look as such against the more talented roster of USC.

With the defense of USC being its weak spot, Rice has a chance to get to 20 points. But USC will still cover 32.5 points as 60 is a possibility for the Trojans.

Over/Under

OVER 61.5 (-110) is the way to play this one.

If you are a bit hesitant about the large spread, the Over is a great play in this mismatch as well. Much like Thursday’s Central Michigan at Oklahoma State game, which OK-State won 58-44, this contest is going to get well Over the posted total.

There’s a good chance the Trojans cover this number by themselves. Also consider playing USC team total OVER 47.5 (-112).

Rice at Arkansas odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Rice at Arkansas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rice Owls and Arkansas Razorbacks meet Saturday in their season openers at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. The game can be viewed on ESPN+. Below, we look at the Rice at Arkansas odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Owls are on the rise after many seasons in the doldrums. Head coach Mike Bloomgren is leading the resurgence. Rice had a losing record in a COVID-shortened 2020, going 2-3, but all three setbacks were by 10 points or less.

Rice QB Luke McCaffrey, brother of Carolina Panthers standout Christian McCaffrey, is expected to see time under center. He is a dual-threat option battling redshirt junior QB Wiley Green, who has nine starts under his belt.

Arkansas won three games in the SEC last season, as head coach Sam Pittman has the Hogs pointed in the right direction again. The Razorbacks were good for 25.7 points per game in the SEC, more than a touchdown better than the 17.5 PPG they posted in league outings in 2019. They hope that success spills over to this battle against a conference foe from back in the day.

Rice at Arkansas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Arkansas 34, Rice 17

Money line

Arkansas (-1200) will cost you 12 times your potential return, or $8.33 won for every $100 risked. That’s a lot of risk for not much reward.

AVOID.

Against the spread

RICE +19.5 (-112) has yet to name a starting quarterback, but that’s OK. Both McCaffrey and Green are talented players capable of keeping the Owls in the game. Rice won’t threaten to post the upset in this battle between old Southwest Conference rivals, but it will be able to keep the deficit under 20.

Over/Under

The lean is to the OVER 49.5 (-112), but go very lightly. It might not happen until late in the fourth quarter. Arkansas had an improved defense last season, and it will make life miserable for Rice. The Owls, though, have a dual-threat option in McCaffrey, and Green is experienced when his number is called. Rice will be able to find the end zone at least twice.

Speaking of scoring, look for Arkansas’ all-everything WR Treylon Burks to do big things Saturday, too.
