Three things we learned from Texas’ win over Louisiana

Three things we learned from the Week 1 win.

It is safe to say that the Longhorns made a statement on Saturday when they beat a top-25 team that returned all but two starters. By a comfortable margin of 20 points, too.

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program are very much headed in the right direction, and so far are off to a better start in comparison to the last regime’s initial start. Texas played as complete a game as a team can considering they had a redshirt freshman quarterback making his first career start, a new offense, and a new defense all while going up against the No. 23 team in the nation.

Some schools within the conference had more issues against unranked schools.

As always, when there is someone new in charge the old culture and methods are abandoned and forgotten in order to make way for the new. Taking on Louisiana Week 1 gave the Longhorns an opportunity to face quality talent, while also learn about themselves and establish the new culture. It also provided an insight of what the Sarkisian era will consist of.

There were many things that could be taken away from the game, such as the offensive line looking like more of a liability than Ryan Gosling at cornerback in Remember the Titans, the fact that the pass rush is immensely improved, or even that the Longhorns opted for white socks and cleats compared to the black socks and cleats that they had worn last season.

However, I think there were three things that stood out the most about Texas’ season opener.

Three things we learned from Texas’ loss to Iowa State

Texas suffered a season-ending loss to Iowa State on Black Friday. Here are three things we learned from the disappointing performance.

Texas suffered a season-ending loss to Iowa State on Black Friday. The Longhorns still had a chance to make the Big 12 championship with a win but will now be playing for nothing over their next two matchups against Kansas and Kansas State.

It was once again a poorly coached game from Tom Herman late in the fourth quarter. For the second consecutive year in a row against the Cyclones, Texas had plenty of opportunities to put the game to bed. Poorly called plays and a lack of execution from the defense cost the Longhorns both times.

A disappointing performance all around, this has become the norm in Austin. And that is a huge issue. This may have been the final straw for a head coach who has failed to deliver on his goals and aspirations.

What we learned from Texas’ upset victory over Oklahoma State

While there are still problems, the win could rejuvenate some life into the program. Here are three things we learned from the upset victory.

Texas acquired its best victory of the year in Stillwater, beating a top-10 team for the first time since the Sugar Bowl victory against Georgia in 2018. Oklahoma State was ranked No. 6 and was the only remaining undefeated team left in the Big 12.

As usual, Sam Ehlinger was the star on the offensive side of the ball while Joseph Ossai anchored the defense. While there are still problems Tom Herman needs to figure out, the performance and win could rejuvenate the program.

What we learned from Texas Tech vs Houston Baptist

Big 12 conference play is finally here and to open, Texas will be traveling to Lubbock to face off against Texas Tech. After the one nonconference matchup designated by the conference, both the Longhorns and Red Raiders are 1-0.

Matt Well’s squad like Texas played on Sept. 12 and had a bye week. Texas Tech will be playing in its second home game of the year after hosting Houston Baptist. Favored by nearly 40 points according to BetMGM, the Red Raiders needed a two-point conversion stop to earn a 35-33 victory.

With a full two weeks to learn from Texas Tech’s matchup, Tom Herman is going to realize he needs to attack offensively. The Huskies themselves, an FCS program, had an incredible day against the Red Raider’s defense.

What we learned from Stephen F. Austin vs UTEP

UTEP got their season rolling against SFA on Saturday. Here are three things we learned about the Miners before their matchup with Texas:

Texas’ season begins six days from now on Sept. 12. It will be the first game played in Austin in 288 days. Hosting UTEP for the fifth ever time, it will be the Longhorns’ one and only nonconference game in this strange 2020 season.

The Miners’ season has already begun, getting one game under their belt before playing Texas. FCS opponent Stephen F. Austin traveled out west to El Paso, the first of three non-Conference USA games UTEP will play.

A low scoring affair, the Miners were once down 14-3 in the second quarter. They then scored 21 unanswered points to secure their first win of the season, 24-14. After only having one win in 2019, UTEP matched their season win total in just one game.

Luckily for Texas, they now get a full game’s worth of film on Dana Dimel’s 2020 squad. Yes, this should be considered a game the Longhorns easily win but any type of advantages given will be used by Tom Herman.
