What we learned from Texas’ upset victory over Oklahoma State

While there are still problems, the win could rejuvenate some life into the program. Here are three things we learned from the upset victory.

The run defense is coming around

Coming out of the Oklahoma loss, head coach Tom Herman talked about how bad the run defense had been. In the first three Big 12 games, the Longhorns gave up an average of 183.3 rushing yards a game. It was exceptionally bad against TCU. The Horned Frogs ran for 226 yards.

In the past two weeks, the opponent’s ground game has not been the issue. Baylor was held well under 100 yards. Chuba Hubbard, one of the best running backs in the country, averaged 2.9 yards per carry. It was the second game of the season he was under 100 yards.

Missing fewer tackles has been the major reason for the success. According to Pro Football Focus, Texas missed nine tackles. A significantly lower number than in the Red River Shootout. If this trend continues throughout the year, the Longhorns will have a shot to win out.
