Who was the MVP in Texas’ convincing win over Texas Tech?

There are more than a few deserving names, but who was the Offensive MVP in the Texas Longhorns’ win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders?

After walloping the Texas Tech Red Raiders 49-24, the Texas Longhorns are closing out a disappointing season on a high note. Any team that puts up 49 points in a game will have a bevy of options for MVP, and that is not untrue here. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger had an efficient 431 total yards and 3 total touchdowns on 19/27 passing, and former third-string QB-turned-RB Roschon Johnson had 105 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in the best performance of his career.

While both Johnson and Ehlinger are valid choices, my pick is wide receiver Devin Duvernay. Duvernay has stepped up in a big way as a senior, posting monstrous season totals of 103 receptions for 1294 yards and 9 total touchdowns. Saturday’s performance was the cherry on top of a great season, as the speedy wideout went for 199 yards and a touchdown on 6 catches, including this beautiful 75-yard touchdown from Sam Ehlinger:

While Duvernay was questionably snubbed from the final watch-list for the Biletnikoff Award, which is given each year to the best wide receiver in college football, he has definitely seen a rise in draft stock. Duvernay’s top-end speed, reliable hands, and quick feet will make him a very useful tool in the NFL from day 1.

Watch: Longhorn seniors introduced before their final game at Texas

Ahead of the Texas Longhorns’ matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Longhorn seniors were greeted by their families on the field

As the Texas Longhorns football team took the field at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Friday morning, it would mark the last time the current senior class would step foot in DKR as Texas Longhorns. Before the game, the seniors were greeted by their families in celebration of the four years of blood, sweat, and tears they have sacrificed for Texas football.

In this bittersweet moment captured by Texas’ social media team, seniors such as Devin Duvernay, Zach Shackelford, Collin Johnson, and more meet with their loved ones before walloping the Texas Tech Red Raiders by a score of 49-24.

The Longhorns got their sixth win of the season tonight, defeating McNeese State 73-71. While it was not the most impressive win for Texas against a 2-6 Cowboys, as long as the Longhorns are winning they are doing their job. Guard Matt Coleman was one point away from a double-double, scoring nine points with 10 rebounds and six assists.

Postgame Report: Texas Longhorns outlast McNeese State Cowboys 73-71

The Texas Longhorns basketball team improves to 6-1 with a narrow victory over the 2-6 McNeese State Cowboys

Today, the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team narrowly beat the now 2-6 McNeese State Cowboys, outlasting the visiting team 73-71. Though escaping the 2-5 Cowboys by only two points won’t exactly instill confidence in Longhorn diehards, a win is a win and having a proficiency for coming out on top of ugly games is a trait that can be useful come March.

Overall, the Longhorns had a tough time getting anything going from behind the arc, hitting on just 9 of their 31 three point attempts. From the field, Texas hit only 30 if its 66 attempts, good for an uninspiring 45.5% shooting percentage as a team.

Furthermore, Texas was unable to effectively get to the free throw line, attempting only 8 total free throws of which they hit 4 for a miserable 50% free throw percentage.

The player of the game for the Longhorns was Matt Coleman, who accrued 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists in 38 minutes of play. This Longhorns team has a foundation to build on, but needs to get more consistent on the offensive end if they wish to make any noise this season.

What We Learned: Zach Evans, No. 13 North Shore push past No. 7 Katy in Texas playoffs

North Shore and uber-recruit Zach Evans were too much for Katy, avenging a season-opening loss with a second half spurt.

It was coming.

After an enormous letdown of a loss in the season opener, North Shore (Houston, Texas) has put together an increasingly impressive season as it attempts to defend its Texas Class 6A Div. I state title. It was only a matter of time before they faced a rematch with their season-opening conquerors in the regional playoffs.

That time came Friday. This time, the Mustangs were ready.

North Shore scored 21 unanswered points from the late third quarter to the final horn to dump Katy out of the playoffs for a second consecutive season. This time the final score was 56-35, belying a game that was tight at halftime and got away from the previously undefeated Tigers in the fourth.

Here’s what we learned from one of the most highly anticipated non-title playoff games in ages.

1) Dematrius Davis is a force to be reckoned with

The North Shore junior quarterback was an unstoppable dual threat monster, racking up six total touchdowns (5-star running back Zack Evans had the other two) to pace North Shore throughout. The Virginia Tech commit had 124 yards rushing (with one touchdown) and 123 yards passing (with two scores) at the half and built from there. Hokies fans should be very, very excited with his ability to completely change the game … provided he doesn’t decommit before he can sign on the dotted line in a little more than a year.

2) It wasn’t deer in the headlights, but Katy was outclassed

There’s really no two ways to slice it: This time around, North Shore showed it was far more talented than its higher-ranked opponent. That’s not to take away from the Tigers’ season-opening win. Quite the contrary. It’s just that North Shore had playmakers to deploy in every facet of the game … with more ready to come on as reinforcements. Case in point: At one point in the second half, North Shore deployed superstar recruit Evans on the defensive line. It was the kind of move intended to shake up Katy. It worked, with Evans getting pressure around the left end and forcing Katy to adjust its play.

There might be only a half dozen teams in the country with more talent available on the sidelines than Katy. Unfortunately, one of thsoe was on the opposite sideline Friday.

3) No rest for North Shore’S weary: Duncanville is up next

It would be natural for North Shore to take a deep breath and savor such a monumental victory. That’s not an option for the Mustangs. Just a week after knocking off the team that topped them in the season opener (their only loss in two seasons), North Shore will face off against Super 25 No. 3 Duncanville (Dallas, Texas) in a state quarterfinal. Yes, that means that the Mustangs path to a second-straight state title will run through both the one team that beat them and the team they topped with a Hail Mary on the final play of last year’s state championship … in back-to-back weeks.

Don’t let anyone tell you differently: The Texas Class 6A state football tournament is completely insane. Whichever team survives it deserves some kind of a medal for endurance alongside the trophy.

Postgame Report: Texas stomps Texas Tech 49-24

After walloping the Texas Tech Red Raiders 49-24, the Texas Longhorns are closing out the season on a high note

After walloping the Texas Tech Red Raiders 49-24, the Texas Longhorns are closing out a disappointing season on a high note. In the first quarter, Texas had a tough time getting anything going and went down 14-0 early. After that, the defense stepped up and the offense got into a groove, taking shots down the field and spreading out the Red Raiders’ defense. The win today leaves the Longhorns with a 7-5 record and looking towards a mid or low-tier bowl game.

Quarterback Sam Ehlinger had another huge game, throwing for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns with 19/27 passing. As usual, Ehlinger was effective on the ground as well, rushing 10 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. Ehlinger officially surpassed 10,000 career yards before he got pulled for Casey Thompson late as the game was already out of reach.

Senior wide receiver Devin Duvernay had a monster performance in his last game at DKR, catching 6 passes for 199 yards and 1 touchdown. Duvernay’s score came on a beautiful 75-yard pass from Ehlinger, which Duvernay caught in stride and took to the house:

QB-turned-RB Roschon Johnson added 105 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, putting in his best performance as a Texas Longhorn. On the defensive side of the ball, Marqez Bimage was the main standout with a forced fumble, fumble recovery, and sack.

The Longhorns await Selection Day to find out where they will travel for a bowl game. The Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida is a popular choice among analysts, and the Longhorns could easily be headed to Florida.

Referee Cooper Castleberry hilariously confirms that the previous play was, in fact, a pass

Being a referee is a hard and thankless job. On any given play there are so many moving parts that it is easy to get lost in the shuffle and miss a call or two. Despite what your average fan would have you believe, spotting penalties in real-time when you’re on the field is extremely difficult. Luckily, some calls are easy. For instance, referee Cooper Castleberry was able to confirm that the previous play was, in fact, a pass:
