Beat Oklahoma State: Texas can win a championship this week

Season success hinges on a Big 12 championship this week.

There’s plenty of playoff noise for the Texas Longhorns leading up to the team’s final test of the season. The Longhorns (11-1) will face the Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-3) in the Big 12 title game. This week, that game is all that should matter.

Oklahoma State does not have the same aspirations as Texas to end the year. Saturday is their biggest game of the season and the best the Cowboys can accomplish in 2023. The game needs to be that significant for the Longhorns with what is at stake.

The Longhorns have an opportunity to win their first Big 12 title since 2009. They have won three in total. Entering the season, we noted 10 wins and a Big 12 title victory as a success for the team. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has reiterated the importance of winning the conference throughout the season. The game is a must-win battle.

Texas would like more than a Big 12 championship in 2023, but winning this week is all that is within its control. For now, a successful season rests on whether or not they can take care of business in Arlington on Saturday.

The team will look to secure a Big 12 title in its final year in the conference Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.

No. 17 Oklahoma State walks off No. 21 Texas to take the series

9th inning struggles cost Texas the ballgame on Sunday.

No. 17 Oklahoma State walked off No. 21 Texas 4-3 to earn a crucial Big 12 series victory.

9th inning struggles cost Texas the ballgame on Sunday.

Up 3-2 in the top half of the ninth, Texas loaded the bases with no outs looking to add some insurance runs. Instead, Jared Thomas stuck out swinging and Mitchell Daly hit into a double play to end the frame scoreless.

David Pierce then turned to closer Zane Morehouse to record the final three outs. Morehouse got the leadoff batter the flyout before giving up a single and three consecutive walks to tie the game. Oklahoma State’s Nolan Schubart drilled a hard single into right field to send the Longhorns home disappointed.

Texas’ bats were held quiet aside from a three-run homerun from Garret Guillmette in the first inning. Cowboys’ pitching did an excellent job of keeping Texas’ from stringing hits together all weekend long.

Up next for Texas is a midweek matchup back home against Air Force on Tuesday.

No. 21 Texas takes game one over No. 17 Oklahoma State 5-3

Texas baseball stays red hot.

No. 21 Texas continues its winning ways with a 5-3 victory over No. 17 Oklahoma State.

Texas took an early 2-1 lead via a 444-foot homerun by Garret Guillmette in the third inning. An RBI single by Jack O’Dowd and a two-run home run from Jalin Flores pushes the Horns lead to 5-1 in the fourth.

Dylan Campbell provided a nice night at the plate to help the Longhorns’ effort. Campbell had three hits, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle.

Lucas Gordon delivered another sharp Friday night performance. The lefty picked up the win by tossing seven innings of three-run baseball.

Gordon handed to ball over to the Texas bullpen as David Shaw and Zane Morehouse slammed the door on the Cowboys. Morehouse picked up his fourth save since taking over the closer role.

The win pushes Texas to 20-7 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 Conference play. The Longhorns are looking to clinch the series on Saturday with Travis Stehle on the bump.

No. 21 Texas vs. No. 17 Oklahoma State preview and pitching matchups

Texas and Oklahoma State face off in a massive Big 12 series this weekend.

A top-25 Big 12 baseball showdown is set to take place between No. 21 Texas (19-7, 3-0) and No. 17 Oklahoma State (20-6, 4-2) this weekend in Stillwater.

The Longhorns are riding high on a 15-game win streak entering this series, while Oklahoma State is coming off a sweep of Baylor and a midweek loss to Dallas Baptist.

Texas’ bats have come alive over the past few weeks. The Horns are hitting .329 with 25 home runs during its winning streak. Peyton Powell and Porter Brown are anchoring Texas’s offensive attack of late.

The pitching staff has been solid all season long for the Longhorns. Friday night starter Lucas Gordon has taken another step in the right direction. Gordon is on pace for a career year, boasting a 1.65 ERA in six starts.

Behind Gordon, Texas’ pitching is finding their roles. David Pierce’s move of Zane Morehouse to the bullpen is paying off so far. The Sunday starter job is still up for grabs, with Charlie Hurley and Lebarron Johnson Jr. likely competing for the nod.

The winner of this series would position themselves in a front-runner spot in the Big 12 title race.

Here is a look at the probable weekend starters for Texas and Oklahoma State.

Texas F Timmy Allen OUT against Oklahoma State on Thursday

Allen is “day to day” with a lower right leg injury.

Texas will be without senior forward Timmy Allen for its Big 12 tournament matchup with Oklahoma State on Thursday night.

The university reports Allen is “day to day” with a lower right leg injury.

Allen has been a key contributor for the Longhorns over the past two seasons. The former Utah transfer is averaging over 11 points and six rebounds per game in over 60 starts for Texas.

Not having Allen opens the door for Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year Sir’Jabari Rice to slide into the starting lineup. Freshman Dillon Mitchell and senior Christian Bishop will be tasked with a more significant role in the front court.

Texas swept Oklahoma State during the regular season and looks to advance to the Big 12 semifinals with another win. The Cowboys are on the NCAA bubble, needing a victory to feel good about its chances on selection Sunday.

Getting Allen back by the NCAA Tournament is a priority for Rodney Terry and Texas basketball, even if that means playing in the Big 12 tournament shorthanded.

Social media reacts to Texas’ 41-34 loss to Oklahoma State

Disappointment in Stillwater.

Texas’ second half nightmares came to fruition yet again in the 41-34 loss to Oklahoma State.

The Longhorns watched a double-digit lead disappear behind an abysmal offensive performance. Texas mustered just three second half points as Oklahoma State finished on a 17-0 run.

The late-game woes are becoming a common trend under Steve Sarkisian. This marks the fifth game in his short Texas career the Longhorns have blown a two-possession second-half lead.

Quinn Ewers and his wide receiver seemed to be on different pages all night. Ewers threw completed just 19 of 49 passes for two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Spender Sanders and an injury battled Cowboys team moved the football with easy. Texas’ defense had no answers for Oklahoma State’s quick passing and quarterback run game.

Texas enters the bye week with a record of 5-3 and many questions to figure out. Unfortunately, the schedule does not get any easier with No. 17 Kansas State and No. 8 TCU on the horizon.

Here is how social media reacted to Texas’ disappointing loss in Stillwater.
