Five bold predictions for Saturday’s game between Texas and Kansas

Bold predictions this week feature Texas continuing a few impressive streaks.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns have a pivotal matchup with the No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. It marks what could be the final Top 25 matchup between Texas and the hateful eight, the eight Big 12 teams that remain after Oklahoma and Texas announced their departure from the league.

We anticipate next week’s game to be a Top 15 matchup, but Kansas should command all attention from Texas this week. It’s the kind of matchup that could determine whether or not the Longhorns are playing for a College Football Playoff berth at season’s end.

Kansas is a good football team, but like most anybody else in college football it has identifiable flaws. The Longhorns need to attack those flaws on Saturday.

Here are a few of our bold predictions for Saturday’s game.

Keys for Texas in avoiding an upset loss against Kansas

Texas needs to prepare with a level of focus strong enough not only to win, but to win soundly.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns (4-0) face their second ranked matchup of the season against the No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks (4-0). It doesn’t have to be a suspenseful game unless Texas allows the suspense.

The Longhorns defeated the Jayhawks 55-14 last season. Kansas starting quarterback Jalon Daniels was healthy, as were many of the weapons the team brings into Austin. And no matter how much the Jayhawks have improved, this feels like a game that is Texas’ to lose.

The game presents matchups that feature strength on strength. The Kansas offense and Texas defense are both strong units that do particularly well on the money downs. The winner of this particular matchup will likely win the game. The Texas defense won soundly last season.

Here’s a look at a few keys for Texas avoiding an upset against Kansas.

FULL PREVIEW: Texas Longhorns (6-4) vs. Kansas Jayhawks (6-4)

Texas is due for more luck this week. Here’s who to watch for in this pivotal game.

The Texas Longhorns are once again in a must-win scenario on Saturday. More than for conference title standing, this game is about bolstering program perception after losing to Kansas last season.

The Kansas Jayhawks enter the game with a 6-4 record and bowl eligible for the first time since 2008. Given Lance Leipold’s culture changing success, players likely aren’t satisfied with simply playing football in December.

The next two games for the Jayhawks provide arguably the biggest opportunity to make a statement of their own. After Kansas faces Texas they take on the in-state rival Kansas State Wildcats. With an opportunity to secure its best season since 2007, the program should bring its best effort on Saturday.

Let’s look at what to watch for in this pivotal game.

Texas vs. Kansas: An early look at Saturday’s game

The games haven’t gotten any less important for Texas after the TCU loss.

The Texas Longhorns have a huge battle upcoming on Saturday. The Big 12 schedule pits the six-win Longhorns against another six-win team, the Kansas Jayhawks.

Lance Leipold’s team isn’t sneaking up on anybody, but especially not Texas. Steve Sarkisian’s team seemed to experience the beginning of KU’s football resurgence in last season’s home defeat.

The Longhorns fell 57-56 to the Jayhawks in overtime last season, as Kansas converted a two-point attempt for the win. This season, Leipold’s team enters the game confident and bowl eligible.

Texas will look to find itself on Saturday after a poor offensive effort last week. Texas’ lone touchdown came on a defensive scoop and score late in the fourth quarter against TCU. To win in Lawrence, the team will need more scoring from its offense.

Let’s look at a few things to monitor as we approach the game.

Monday Reset: How Texas football can finish the season strong

Texas can set the program in an upward trajectory with an 8-4 season.

Texas endured a frustrating 17-10 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday. Multiple players and coaches underperformed. Despite it all, the Longhorns have plenty to play for moving forward.

There shouldn’t be any doubt how significant the next two wins would be for the program. There’s a vast difference in not making a bowl last season and winning six games so far. However, the step up from 6 wins to 8 wins would be as important if not more.

Steve Sarkisian’s team will face Kansas and Baylor to end the season. Kansas got steamrolled in Lubbock 43-28 last week. Baylor last no-showed against Kansas State in a 31-3 home loss.

Without question, the Longhorns should win the next two games. Let’s look at what a successful season looks like moving forward.

Staff predictions for Texas’ home matchup vs. Kansas

How confident is the staff that Texas can get back into the win column this week?

Texas is desperately looking to get back into the win column this week after dropping four consecutive games to conference opponents.

There is still belief that Steve Sarkisian and his staff can right the ship and get Texas back on track over the next couple of years. However, they need to finish this season strong and win two of their remaining three games in order to reach a howl game.

The Longhorns have a great chance to gain some momentum in Week 11 with a home matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Tipico Sportsbook views Texas as the heavy favorites in this matchup. Will the Longhorns be able to cover?

Texas heads back to DKR after horrific road trips in which Texas dropped games to Baylor and Iowa State, increasing its losing streak to four. The Horns look to end that skid against Kansas in a game they must win if they want to keep their bowl hopes alive.

The Texas run game should get back on track this week. Sarkisian will pound the rock to take advantage of Kansas’ lackluster run defense. Establishing the run will take some pressure off Casey Thompson and Hudson Card, who have struggled recently.

It is unclear if Kansas quarterback Jason Bean will be available to play due to injury. Regardless of who starts, the Texas defense’s best bet is to load the box and force Kansas to beat them through the air.

I expect Texas to end their four-game losing streak behind big performances from the running backs and wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

The losing streak has to end eventually, and what better time to do than this week against 1-8 Kansas. Texas needs this win to give them wiggle room in the next two. The Longhorns still need two wins to become bowl eligible.

Talent wise, Kansas cannot match up with Texas, and if the Longhorns can finally play even close to a complete game they should have no issue. The quarterback situation is very murky, but if the Longhorns cannot pass the ball against Kansas, just throw the season away.

I expect a steady diet of running the ball, as Steve Sarkisian said both quarterbacks will play again. If the Texas offense can help the defense by not forcing it to be on the field as much, I don’t expect Jason Bean (if he plays) to really do much.

The Longhorns are coming off a crazy week in which someone thought it would be smart to post a video of a screaming Bo Davis, but the staff and pretty much everyone supported his rant. I think the team may buy in even more and finally end that streak.

Texas 35, Kansas 17

I’ll keep this short and simple, a win here is needed in any which way. I don’t care if it’s a messy win or a dominant win, just win the game. It’s been far too long since the Longhorns have been in the win column.

Even with the injuries to key players for Texas, primarily star running back Bijan Robinson, it shouldn’t be a problem with Kansas’ underwhelming defensive unit. The Longhorns are so deep at the running back position that Keilan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks can run all over this team if needed.

Bo Davis’ viral video this week should inject some fight and heart into this team. I truly believe the staff has this program headed in the right direction, and a dominant win this weekend with priority recruits in attendance should go a long way.
