Texas’ Week 9 matchup with Baylor may be one of the most interesting games of the week

The Texas vs. Baylor game is being tabbed as one of the most interesting games this week!

Texas’ season is hanging in the balance of this weekend’s trip to Waco.

The window of oppurtunity for making it to the Big 12 Championship for Texas is getting smaller and smaller, but there is still a slight opening. The Longhorns realistically have to win out, and hope that Oklahoma and Oklahoma State drop a game or two in order to punch their ticket to Jerry World.

Baylor also badly needs this win, as they still have yet to play Oklahoma. The Big 12 has five teams vying for two spots, and for Texas losing another conference game will not play well for their chances.

There are many great games this week with all kinds of implications, whether it be for the College Football Playoff, or to see who will reign supreme in a respective conference. 247Sports compiled a list of the top-10 games this weekend that they viewed as the most interesting, and the Longhorns matchup against Baylor graced the list. Here are the other games that they viewed as the most interesting matchups this weekend:

Texas and Baylor came in at No. 10 on what looks to be one of the most loaded slates this season. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns badly need to gain some momentum, and beating the No. 16 ranked Baylor Bears would do just that.

Four bold predictions for Texas’ game against Baylor

Time to be BOLD as the fate of the season is hanging in the balance.

The fate of Texas’ season is hanging in the balance, as any hope of reaching the Big 12 championship either will continue or end after Saturday’s game against Baylor.

After dropping two consecutive games to the Oklahoma schools, the Longhorns are fifth in the conference standings, and badly need to pull off a win against Baylor in order to help themselves stay in contention. Texas does not really have a clear path to the Big 12 Championship, as they need to win out, and also rely on a couple other teams to lose in order to shake the conference up.

Iowa State helped them out last week by beating Oklahoma State, but if Texas does not beat Baylor this week, that win does nothing for them.

The Longhorns do not match up well with Baylor, as the Bears are home to the No. 9 rushing offense in the nation averaging 240 yards rushing per game, while Texas has been giving up a horrendous 200 rushing yards per game. The Longhorns gave up at least 200 yards rushing in all of their losses this season. In their four wins, Texas has not allowed an offense to rush for 200 yards.

If Texas cannot take advantage of the two weeks to prepare for Baylor’s outside zone running game, they will quickly find themselves with three straight losses and out of contention for the Big 12 title.

It will take a huge performance from the defense, and also Texas’ offense who looked abysmal in the loss to Oklahoma State. If Texas needed anything from Casey Thompson these past couple weeks, it was for him to get back to full strength, because what we saw against Oklahoma State looked like a completely different player that lacked confidence and accuracy.

Taking everything into consideration, it is time for my weekly bold predictions for Texas’ matchup against Baylor.

Comparing Texas and Baylor’s statistical leaders

Texas’ statistical leaders line up similar to Baylor’s.

For the first time since Halloween last season, Texas will be facing off against a ranked team on the road. No. 16 Baylor plays host in Waco, hoping to keep pushing their successful second year under Dave Aranda forward.

Both teams are coming off a bye week. In their last matchup, the Bears got a 14 point win over BYU, while Texas collapsed against Oklahoma State. The vibe around each program could not be more different.

When comparing the two from a stat perspective, the numbers a similar. Of the six categories selected (passing, rushing, receiving, tackling, sacks, and return yards), Bijan Robinson’s numbers are the only ones that show a significant difference.

Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon has some room on Casey Thompson, but the first two starts of the year went to Hudson Card. The former has played in and started every game for Baylor.

Here is a comparison of Texas and Baylor’s stat leaders. Of note, both teams have played seven games to this point.

Staff predictions for Texas’ road matchup with No. 16 Baylor

No. 16 Baylor is the 2.5 point favorite over Texas this week. How confident is our staff that the Longhorns can escape Waco with a win?

Texas slight underdogs on the road against No. 16 Baylor

For just the second time this season, Texas has opened as an underdog.

After taking a week off with a bye, Texas is set to face off against their third consecutive ranked opponent in No. 16 Baylor. Traveling just north to Waco, Saturday’s result is a huge one for Steve Sarkisian.

Win and everything from the previous three weeks somewhat goes away. The best way to fix problems is by winning. As crazy as it may sound, a Big 12 championship game appearance is still possible.

Lose and things could get pretty ugly, pretty quickly. An 8-4 season was not out of the equation coming into the year but was seen as the worst possible scenario. Baylor winning would present that as the best-case scenario.

Unluckily, Tipico Sportsbook sees Baylor as the favorite. Texas has opened as an underdog for just the second time this season at 2.5 points.

Just like their record on the field, Texas is 4-3 against the spread so far this season.

Five Texas players who need to step up against Baylor

These five need to perform against Baylor on Saturday.

After two grueling losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Texas has a full week to reflect and attempt to recharge for the final five games of the regular season. First on the schedule is a tough road game against No. 16 Baylor.

This could be the make-or-break game for Steve Sarkisian. 5-3 with a 3-2 Big 12 record could still push on toward a conference championship. Sitting at .500 overall could lead to even worse fates down the road.

Everybody within the program needs to step up heading into Baylor. Sarkisian, assistant coaches, and especially the players.

Talent is on this Texas roster. Within the next couple of years, more players will have been drafted from Tom Herman’s recruiting classes than the latter stages of Mack Brown or Charlie Strong. Coaching has been iffy at times but with NFL caliber level players sprinkled throughout, results have been poor.

Things need to change. Here are five players who need to step up for Texas during the Baylor game.

Texas releases depth chart ahead of Baylor matchup

Longhorns riding with the same starters?

With game day approaching, the Longhorns are hoping to take advantage of the extra week to prepare for Baylor.

After losing back-to-back games in devastating fashion, and although they may be discouraged, Texas has a real chance to get back into Big 12 contention. A lot of occurrences beyond their control will need to happen in order to do so, but it’s very possible that the Longhorns will play in Dallas for the Big 12 title.

In both losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the team started off strong in the first half, but the offense ran out of juice. The defense would eventually be broken down by the opposing team’s running game.

Baylor likely has a top 10 rush offense that could make life very difficult for a defense that cannot stop the run very well.

The Longhorns released the depth chart for the Baylor game on Tuesday, and for the most part it looks the same as it did last week. Here is who will be getting the start for Texas.

The offensive line unit from last week will get a second chance, with Tope Imade at right guard for his second career start being the only player that has not been a consistent starter.

In terms of the defense, DeMarvion Overshown is listed as the starter at weak side linebacker, which is a good sign considering he left the last game with a concussion. Everything is the same on defense as well, with Alfred Collins starting at at JACK for the second consecutive week, and Luke Brockermeyer still starting at the middle linebacker position ahead of Jaylan Ford, who many believe will see the field a lot more after his impressive performance last week.

The Texas staff believes in this group enough to keep pretty much everything the same, so the game will come down to preparation. More importantly, being able to play more consistent throughout the whole game.
