Bleacher Report believes Texas will upset Oklahoma this fall

Is this the year Texas takes down the Sooners?

With the return of Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy, along with the addition of a strong group of transfers and a talented recruiting class, the 2022 Texas football hype train has already left the station.

The offense has the chance to be one of the most explosive in the nation. The winner of the quarterback battle between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers will have no shortage of weapons to work with.

The defense on the other hand is facing many question marks. The Longhorns need to clean up the missed tackles and find a way to pressure the quarterback at a much higher rate. Getting linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and defensive back D’shawn Jamison back for another season adds much-needed experience and leadership to that side of the ball.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Shepard picked Texas to take down the Oklahoma Sooners in his “way-too-early college football upset picks.”

The Red River Showdown is routinely wacky, and even though the Sooners have won the past four, three of those were by one possession. The Horns have the offensive firepower to break through, which would constitute a mini-upset. It also could catapult them into the Big 12 title conversation.

A win over Oklahoma would do wonders for Steve Sarkisian in his second year as well as help Texas reach the Big 12 championship game for the first time since 2018.

Red River Madness: Texas takes down Oklahoma in a thriller

Texas breaks the hearts of the Sooners yet again.

No. 20 Texas got a much needed road win over arch-rival Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Both teams traded punches for the entirety of the game but the Longhorns came out with an 80-78 overtime victory.

In typical Andrew Jones fashion, he got Texas going early on against the Sooners. Jones finished with 20 points including a clutch three late in the second half to give Texas a four-point lead.

Oklahoma scored on consecutive possessions, sending the game into overtime tied at 66.

The Longhorns and Sooners went back and forth through overtime before Timmy Allen gave Texas the lead for good with this putback:

Texas came through when they needed, shooting 5-7 in overtime. Marcus Carr would add a free throw to ice the game and send Texas home as winners.

Up next for Texas is a matchup with No. 11 Texas Tech on Saturday.

Key stats:

  • F Timmy Allen: 20 points, four rebounds, two steals
  • G Andrew Jones: 20 points, seven rebounds
  • G Marcus Carr: 16 points, three rebounds
  • F Christian Bishop: 16 points, six rebounds, three assist

Two Oklahoma wide receivers enter the transfer portal

Would either of these Sooners in the transfer portal be a good fit for Texas?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz52bnpekkafqb player_id=none image=https://longhornswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Lincoln Riley leaving for USC has left a lot of uncertainty in the Oklahoma program.

Among several decommits, the Sooners have seen multiple key contributors enter the transfer portal. Wide receivers Theo Wease and Jadon Haselwood are back on the open market.

Both players are former five-star recruits who have battled their share of injuries.

Wease missed the 2021 season due to injury, but accounted for over 660 yards and six touchdowns during his first two years at Oklahoma. He was one of the main pass catchers on Oklahoma’s 2020 Big 12 championship team.

Haselwood dealt with the injury bug in 2020 but has proved himself as a playmaker in 2021. The junior led all Sooner wideouts in both receptions and touchdowns on the season.

Steve Sarkisian’s interest in the two Oklahoma transfers remains to be seen, but with the lack of quality talent and depth Texas currently has at wide receiver, both Wease and Haselwood may end up becoming a good fit.

Oklahoma vs Texas Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Oklahoma’s offense needs a tune-up.

It’s fine by normal standards.

It’s averaging 433 yards and 38 points per game, the passing attack is adequate, and the team has done something right to get to 5-0, but outside of a scrimmage against Western Carolina, the pop just isn’t there.

Texas is the one coming into this with the hot offense the kids are all slamming to.

No. 1 in the Big 12 in scoring, yards, ruining, and passing efficiency, everything that was supposed to happen with Steve Sarkisian taking over is actually kicking in.

The Longhorns figured out that Casey Thompson was the right quarterback fit for now, Bijan Robinson is close to becoming the best running back in college football, and it’s all leading to lots of big plays, lots of third down conversions, and the ability to come through in tight games like the 32-27 win over TCU.

Oklahoma’s problem is the inability to run with any consistency. Without a Jalen Hurts or Kyler Murray under center, and Rhamondre Stevenson off being a New England Patriot, the ground game is okay. It’s not good enough, though, for Oklahoma to be Oklahoma.

If Texas gets out to a quick lead, then OU will have to press for the first time all year, but …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The team has figured something out.

So Oklahoma isn’t ripping through teams with frightening precision. So it’s having way too hard a time putting games away. So all four games against FBS teams were decided by a touchdown or less.

There’s a little too much playing with fire, but the Sooners have been able to pull off several solid wins with defense, not screwing up, and enough offense to get the job done without taking any unnecessary chances.

The running game isn’t that bad. Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray are combining for over five yards per carry.

Spencer Rattler doesn’t rip off big runs, but that’s not his job. He’s not making the big plays through the air he did last year, but he’s more accurate – hitting 76% of his passes – and he’s not making the killer mistakes.

The D is getting the job done, too, when it absolutely has to.

The Sooners aren’t allowing much of anything on the ground – Bijan Robinson isn’t going to find a whole lot of room to move – and the pass rush is good enough to be a bother. And then there’s the other key to the new and not-really-improved-but-different Sooners …

Turnovers. There really aren’t any.

Last year at this point there were nine. This year after five games there are four, and two of them were in the opener against Tulane.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Is this still going to be as much fun when the two are in the SEC and not playing for Big 12 world domination? That’s for another day.

The real question is this. Is Oklahoma really playing so many tight games because it’s being relatively conservative – and sputtering in a play-not-to-lose sort of way – or is it because it can’t do what it’s supposed to.

We’re about to find out.

This probably goes one of two ways. Either the Oklahoma defense rises up and rocks – and that becomes the storyline – or the Texas offense gets hot and the OU O really doesn’t have the extra gear.

Or it might be a little of both. The Texas offense plays better, the Oklahoma defense keeps this in range, and in the end, Rattler and the attack doesn’t quite come through with the one clutch scoring drive it needs to pull this out.

Report: The Big 12 has sent a ‘cease and desist’ letter to ESPN

According to report by Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel, which has since been confirmed by multiple sources, the Big 12 conference has sent a cease and desist letter to ESPN stating the network has been manipulating conference alignment.

Reports surfaced last week describing how Texas and Oklahoma were attempting to leave the Big 12 for the SEC after their contracts end in 2025.

That report was later confirmed after Texas and Oklahoma informed the Big 12 on Monday that they would not be renewing their contracts. On Tuesday, the two schools officially applied to the SEC.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby added context in a report by AP writer Ralph Russo.

“I have absolute certainty they (ESPN) have been involved in manipulating other conferences to go after our members,” Bowlsby said.

Read the full letter here:

ESPN’s SEC Network, along with the SEC itself, would benefit from the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the conference. The two powerhouses are storied college football programs that would allow the conference and partner ESPN to bank on new TV revenue from the merger. And that’s just one aspect. This move will likely impact the SEC and college football in more ways than we know.

Stay tuned to UGA Wire as the situation develops further.

Texas CB D’Shawn Jamison: ‘I wish the OU game was at night’

Everybody’s favorite offseason topic is the kickoff for the Red River Shootout. Texas CB D’Shawn Jamison believes it should be at night.

Outside of debating the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry, everybody’s favorite offseason topic is the kickoff time for the Red River Shootout.

Texas-Oklahoma has been playing at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas since the 1932 season. Traditionally, the game has kicked off during the 11 a.m. or 2:30 window. For years, fans have been asking for a night game between the two bitter rivals.

Even players want in on the action.

For the first time since the 2017 matchup, ESPN will get to broadcast Texas-OU. Fox used the rivalry as their Big Noon Kickoff from 2018-2020, but the worldwide leader has yet to announce a start time for the 2021 edition.

Texas cornerback D’Shawn Jamison has begun to campaign for the later kickoff time to finally happen. “I wish the OU game was at night,” Jamison said via Twitter on Wednesday.

Now, there are multiple reasons as to why a night game could be seen as a hazard. First off, no matter when kickoff is, both Texas and Oklahoma fans are going to begin their festivities before sunrise. By 11 a.m., some can already be feeling good. Now imagine a full 12 hours.

Others will argue Fair Park would not be the safest area when the sun goes down. However, the State Fair Classic between Grambling State and Prarie View A&M kicked off at 4 p.m. in 2019. By the end of the game, it would have been dark. It can be done.

Premier games going up against Texas-Oklahoma on Oct. 9 include Auburn-Georgia, Alabama-Texas A&M (one of these will be a 2:30 CBS kickoff), and Notre Dame-Virginia Tech.

The Red River Shootout will undoubtedly the biggest and closest game of the day. Hopefully, ESPN/ABC considers scheduling a later kickoff.

Why Texas Will Win

Oklahoma has lost its groove.

It was rolling right along and looking like a possible contender to at least finish in the top three in the Big 12, but the offense hasn’t been clutch, the defense couldn’t stop Oklahoma State in back-to-back losses, and now it’s on a three-game losing streak and in desperate need to catch a wee bit of a break.

Texas has been a bit flaky, but when it’s flaky-good, everything is falling, the threes are there, and the team has been playing well even with a loss to Texas Tech when the O went cold.

OU allowed Oklahoma State to hit close to half of its shots over the two-game stretch. Texas should be able to do that same with an extra pass or two getting it done – the team has hit 49% or better from the field in six of its last ten games.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

When Texas is on, it’s great from the field. It doesn’t have turnover problems, it’s moving the ball around well, and it’s good enough from three to open everything up.

When Texas is off, it’s like pulling teeth. The team was able to beat Kansas even when nothing was falling from three, but it was off in the first meeting with OU and lost 80-79.

For all of the Sooners’ problems, it’s shooting relatively well. They haven’t been great on the boards, but they’re not turning the ball over and they were right in there in the three losses.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma will pull up out of the nosedive by cranking up the defense a bit.

Oklahoma State’s offense was terrific in the two wins over OU, but before that, teams were having a hard time hitting from three. The Sooners will keep Texas to under 30% from the outside, but will struggle just enough on the boards to keep from pulling away.

Expect this to come down to the last few possessions.

Texas (13-5) vs Oklahoma (13-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Texas keep on shooting well but it needs a bit more of a break.

On fire hitting half of its shots or more in three of the last six games – and 49% against TCU – the Longhorns are making things happen on the move and they’re generating enough rebounds to come up with second chance points.

Can there be a few more threes? Texas only hit six of 25 in the first meeting with OU – an 80-79 Sooner win – but the defense was able to do its part from the outside.

Texas plays the best three-point D in the Big 12, it owns the glass, and now it just needs to be a wee bit hotter than it was back in Norman in late January.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners just don’t make enough mistakes.

They don’t commit enough fouls to give up a ton of free throws – but when they do, there’s a problem – and they don’t give the ball away for easy points. They were +3 in turnover margin in the first meeting and shot 15 more free throws.

Unlike Texas – who’s been shooting well but it doesn’t translate into wins – Oklahoma wins when it shoots well and loses when it doesn’t. Over the last 15 games, it’s 11-1 when making 40% or more from the field, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas defense hasn’t allowed 40% from the field in two of its last three games, but it’s allowing almost 41% overall on the season.

Can the Longhorns rise up and pull this off at home? It’ll be another fun game between the two, but once again, the Sooners will do a bit more on the line and will be a bit more careful with the ball in a tight win.
