How to watch No. 2 Texas vs. No. 1 Stanford in the Elite Eight

Texas is looking to clinch their first Final Four appearance since 2003.

No. 2 Texas is back in the Elite Eight for the second consecutive season after taking down No. 6 Ohio State in a 66-63 thriller. Last season Texas’ NCAA tournament run ended with a loss to South Carolina in the Elite Eight.

Awaiting the Longhorns this time around is defending national champion and No. 1 seeded Stanford Cardinal.

The two teams met earlier in the season where Texas pulled off the 61-56 upset on the road in what was a breakout game for star point guard Rori Harmon. The freshman scored 21 points on an efficient 8-16 shooting. Texas will need a similar performance from Harmon to pull off the victory again.

Slowing down Stanford’s Cameron Brink will be a focus of Vic Schafer’s game plan for this one. Brink can do it all for the Cardinal, she leads the team in both scoring and rebounding.

Here is how to tune in for this highly anticipated matchup between Texas and Stanford.

Texas Women’s Basketball: Longhorns are a No. 6 seed in NCAA Tournament

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team was given the No. 6 seed in the Hemisphere Region. They will play No. 11 Bradley in round one.

The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program certainly has a reason to celebrate, but it’s also time to appreciate some girl power as the women’s team recently received their seeding for the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

After the lady Longhorns lost in the conference semifinals to the eventual Big 12 champions in the Baylor Bears, Vic Schaefer’s squad didn’t have to wait too long to find out where they were seeded and who they would face in round one of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 6 Texas will face the No. 11 Bradley Braves in round one of the Hemisfair Region in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The region also includes No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Maryland and No. 4 West Virginia.

Take a look at the exciting moment when the players and coaches learned their bracket and seeding in the video put out by the teams Twitter account on Monday.

This marks the sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the the Longhorns (2019-20 postseason cancelled due to COVID-19) and their 32nd tournament appearance overall.

To make things better, Texas will be playing only 45 minutes down the highway in San Antonio, with what should feel like a home-court advantage for the Longhorns.

Texas and Bradley are scheduled to face off on March 22 at 7:00 p.m. CST.

Former Texas women’s coach Karen Aston should get call from Texas Tech

Following the dismissal of Texas Tech coach Marlene Stollins, they should give former Longhorns coach Karen Aston a call.

Early last week USA TODAY Sports writer Jori Epstein produced a report in collaboration with The Intercollegiate. The Intercollegiate is a college sports investigative media company. In the report they took exit interviews from players that detailed the abuse of players from the Texas Tech women’s basketball program. This led to the eventual dismissal of then head coach Marlene Stollings.

In a press conference that soon followed the announcement of the firing, Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt admitted that “We have failed them.” The one thing that Texas Tech and Hocutt need to do is find a coach that not only can heal them but can be a proven leader for the team.

One available head coach is former Longhorns women’s head coach Karen Aston. Upon the season’s cancellation, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte decided to move on from Aston in favor of Vic Schaeffer. Schaeffer left Mississippi State to take over in Austin.

Aston was coming off six straight NCAA Tournament appearances with Texas. She likely would have made it seven had the season not been cancelled due to COVID-19. She left Texas with a career record of 184-83 overall. Aston also had a conference record 93-51. Over her career from Charlotte, North Texas and Texas she has a career .661 winning percentage. It was .689 in Austin.

It isn’t just her ability to to win games in Austin that should make her an attractive target but she is quite familiar with Big 12 basketball. Before getting her first job in Charlotte, Aston spent time as an assistant with Baylor twice and once with Texas. It is what she meant to her players. Following her dismissal, senior guard Sug Sutton posted a message about Aston on Instagram.

Thank you for giving me the best 4 years I could ask for. There was nothing that you wouldn’t have done for us! You had our backs just as much as we had yours. You weren’t perfect to everyone else but you were perfect to us (this team). You instilled the importance of Texas pride and Texas tradition into this program better than anyone could have ever done. Your hard-work, sacrifice, and commitment did not go unnoticed to us. You are an inspiration and I am so thankful for the relationship that we have built because it’ll go way beyond our time together at Texas.
I love you coach

Freshman guard Celeste Taylor also posted a message for her first collegiate coach.

Given how respected Aston was on and off the court plus her proven track record on it, should be enough to at least be considered in Lubbock.

Longhorns well-represented on 2021 Texas Sports Hall of Fame Ballot

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame listed their ballot for the 2021 class. The Longhorns have nine former athletes up for induction.

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame recently released their 2021 ballots and it has plenty of former Texas Longhorns on it. There are two ballots with one being the primary and the other being the veteran ballot. In total there are nine Longhorns and seven are on the primary ballot. The sports range from football, basketball, softball and track and field.

Primary Ballot

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

The first former Longhorn on the ballot is former kicker Phil Dawson. Dawson played for Texas from 1994-97. He would appear in 46 games in that span. Twice he led the conference in extra point attempts, extra points made and field goal percentage. He would finish his Longhorns career with 339 points scored, his career high of 108 was set in 1996.

He would go on to enjoy a NFL career that lasted until 2018. Most of his career was spent in Cleveland for 14 seasons. He would join the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons and the final two in Arizona with the Cardinals. He played in 305 games total. In that time he converted 83.8 percent of his field goal attempts and 97.6 percent of his extra point attempts.

He would finish his career with 1,847 points over his 20-year NFL career. He was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 2012, which would also be his last year in Cleveland. Dawson ranks second in Browns history for most points scored. He only trails legendary kicker Lou Groza.

Texas Longhorns Women’s Basketball Look For Redemption

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team looks for redemption against the Iowa State Cyclones.

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team is looking to rebound tonight against Iowa State after a narrow defeat at the hands of Texas Christian. The lady frogs escaped with a 65-63 victory. During that game TCU came out strong in the third quarter outscoring Texas 23-13 and took a five-point lead into the final quarter.

The loss was even more disappointing coming off the heels of the Longhorns upset win over then number one ranked Stanford. Joyner Holmes tried to help carry the team in which Charli Collier wasn’t as effective as she has been in recent games with just five points and seven rebounds. In that game, Texas shot just 56.3 percent from the line on 16 attempts. That is the difference between winning and losing.

Last season Iowa State and Texas split their season series at a game a piece, each winning on the road. They met again in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament where the Longhorns fell to the Cyclones 75-69. Texas women’s basketball team will be looking for a bit of retribution against Iowa State in this game.

The Cyclones were able to win their Big 12 opener against Texas Tech 96-66. Texas will be looking to slow down that offense from another huge outing. Iowa State has eclipsed 80 points in five of their 12 games this year. Collier will be looking to get back to her double-double ways against Iowa State tonight in Ames, Iowa.
