Longhorns well-represented on 2021 Texas Sports Hall of Fame Ballot

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame listed their ballot for the 2021 class. The Longhorns have nine former athletes up for induction.

Derrick Johnson, Linebacker

Johnson started 40 games out of 50 career games during his time in Austin. He still is tied for the most interceptions in school history by a linebacker in a single season. A feat that he performed twice. Johnson is tied with Tommy Nobis, Fred Edwards and Tommy Woodard. Johnson is 3rd in UT history for most tackles in a career with 458. His 65 TFL in a career is still tops in school history. Johnson would go on to enjoy a 14-year NFL career with all but one season being played for the Chiefs who drafted him with the 15th overall pick in 2005.

  • Parade All-American in high school. Once posted 30 tackles in a single game.

  • Big 12 Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year

  • Bronko Nagurski Award winner (nation’s top defensive player)
  • Dick Butkus Award winner (nation’s top linebacker)
  • First team All-Pro (2011)
  • Second team All-Pro (2015)
  • Four-time Pro Bowl selection
  • Hall of Honor inductee in 2019
