Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian reflects on loss to Kansas in 2021

Steve Sarkisian has turned the Texas Longhorns football program around and is owed an apology by the doubters.

In his first season, fans were already calling for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s job. After a heartbreaking loss to Kansas at home in 2021 which ended with a 5-7 season, fans were livid.

Sarkisian recently spoke with the media ahead of the No. 3 vs. No. 24 Kansas matchup this weekend, and of course the painful loss to the Jayhawks in 2021 was brought up. The third-year head coach had to say this:

“In a weird way, I’m kind of glad it happened. It exposed some warts in our program that needed to get removed. If we hadn’t removed those warts, we might not be where we are today in our program.”

Since that loss, Sark had led Texas to a 13-6 record with wins on the road against two top-15 teams. This season, Sarkisian’s squad has a 4-0 record, which hasn’t happened since Mack Brown in 2012.

Leading the Texas Longhorns isn’t an easy task, just ask Charlie Strong and Tom Herman. Not everyone can put the Horns back on top in college football, but it seems Sarkisian’s elite offensive mind, rebuilt culture, and extraordinary recruiting can put Texas back in the conversation as one of the best teams in the country every year.

Texas’ Big 12 season is in full swing after an opening win over Oklahoma State. It will not get any easier on Saturday afternoon when the Longhorns travel north to face off against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Bill Self’s squad swept Texas last season, winning in both Austin and Lawrence during the regular season. Since Shaka Smart took over as the head coach, the Longhorns only have one win over the Jayhawks. To be serious contenders in the Big 12, Texas must beat Kansas. It has been since 2010 since the Longhorns won in Lawrence. With no crowd inside Allen Fieldhouse, Texas must take advantage of the non-hostile environment.

Here is how you can watch, listen, and stream Texas’ matchup against Kansas:

Texas’ matchup against Kansas on Saturday has been postponed due to COVID-19. The conference announced the newly scheduled date is Dec. 12.

Texas’ matchup against Kansas on Saturday has been postponed per a statement from KU Athletics. The conference announced the newly scheduled date is Dec. 12, the week before the Big 12 championship game. This is the first game the Longhorns have had postponed due to COVID-19.

Here is the statement Kansas athletics released on Wednesday afternoon:

The Kansas football game vs. Texas on Saturday, Nov. 21 will be postponed to Dec. 12 due to KU’s inability to meet the minimum position requirements established by the Big 12 Conference. The position group affected has a combination of injuries and contact tracing. Since Nov. 8, the KU football program has performed 825 COVID-19 tests with five returning positive on different testing days during that time span.

After having an off date on Nov. 14, this will be Texas’ second off week in a row. The next scheduled event for the Longhorns is Nov. 27 at home against Iowa State.

Currently, Oklahoma State vs Baylor, another game postponed due to COVID-19, is the only other Big 12 matchup taking place on Dec. 12. The Cowboys and Longhorns are two teams competing for a spot in the conference championship game.

Here is how the final schedule will look for Texas:

  • Nov. 27 vs Iowa State
  • Dec. 5 @ Kansas State
  • Dec. 12 @ Kansas

This marks the 20th game postponed due to the coronavirus in the past two weeks. Now all focus shifts to the Iowa State Cyclones on Nov. 27. The Longhorns biggest game remaining on the schedule. If they Longhorns win the next two games, they will likely head into Lawrence, Kansas on Dec. 12 with a Big 12 Championship berth on the line.

Texas Longhorns Football: Recent series history vs Kansas Jayhawks

Texas’ series history against Kansas has been rather lopsided. The Longhorns have a 7-1 record since the two began playing annually in 2012.

Texas’ series history against Kansas has been rather lopsided. The Jayhawks have three career victories against the Longhorns, with two of them coming before World War II began. The famous 2016 Kansas win still resignations in the mind of Texas fans to this day.

Not playing annually until the Big 12 conference dwindled down to 10 teams in 2012, Texas has a 7-1 record in those eight seasons. Despite the wins, all three head coaches in Mack Brown, Charlie Strong, and Tom Herman have had close calls throughout their times.

Second-year head coach Les Miles has struggled this season, winless to this point of the season. After nearly stealing one away in Austin last season, Miles will be looking to get Herman’s number this season.

Here is the recent series history between Texas and Kansas:
