Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 2.0

Cory Bonini has updated his 2021 NFL mock draft to reflect the recently traded picks and free agency.

Here’s my second 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, and this year is no different — at least for now. The draft process is quite different this year, most notably without a scouting combine, so collegiate pro days will be more valuable than in recent years. Also important, in-game data retrieved from chips embedded into equipment, which is something we’ll see teams utilize more frequently and rely less on watching how a player performs without pads.

Anyway, we’ll be unveiling more mock drafts than ever before this year, so be sure to check back with our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of our offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • The New York Jets’ No. 2 pick … I previously mocked WR Ja’Marr Chase here, because I wasn’t convinced the Jets were done with Sam Darnold. It was looking to be the case right up until the San Francisco 49ers traded the farm to move into the No. 3 spot, which convinced me the Jets didn’t want to get out of the second slot for fear of losing their new franchise quarterback.
  • San Francisco could go with Trey Lance or Justin Fields … my lean is Fields, because I see more upside there to fit what Kyle Shanahan wants to do on offense, and there’s a little greater trust factor coming from a powerhouse school.
  • Back to Chase for a moment … Do the Atlanta Falcons need another wide receiver? No, probably not, but Chase’s potential is too great to pass with Julio Jones in the twilight (and probably final year) of his career with the Falcons. Furthermore, the franchise is locked into Matt Ryan for at least 2021 and probably 2022, barring a contract restructuring to spread the dead cap hits. If the team feels it can upgrade elsewhere just enough to be competitive, Chase could be a dynamic pick.

  • Denver is in a strange position following the two draft trades. The Broncos can stick with Drew Lock one more year and see if he develops once he has more cohesion around him and what should be a traditional offseason to develop his promising skills. He lost his top receiver last year, and the right tackle Ja’Wuan James opted out. James, 28, is expected to return, but the team has an out after this year if he’s not playing well. This team could go QB, LB, CB, OT … it’s rather wide open.
  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying Chicago, New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.

Colts select OT Teven Jenkins in latest Draft Wire mock draft

Colts go OT in Draft Wire’s latest mock.

In Draft Wire’s latest mock draft ahead of free agency, the Indianapolis Colts stayed put at No. 21 and selected former Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins.

The retirement of Anthony Castonzo leaves a glaring hole at left tackle, which is bad news for incoming quarterback Carson Wentz. Thankfully for Wentz and the Colts, this year’s offensive tackle class is loaded, giving them plenty of attractive options at this pick. With his blend of athleticism and physicality, Jenkins is the best bet here.

If the Colts do go the offensive tackle route, Jenkins is likely to be high on that list. The Colts will have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to tackles at No. 21 and it may be too good for Chris Ballard to pass up.

In this mock, the Colts could have also gone with wide receiver Rashod Bateman or edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, two players at positions of need that must be addressed this offseason.

To replace Castonzo, Jenkins would be an interesting prospect to choose at No. 21. They could also wait and grab a tackle in the second round, but we also know how much Ballard loves building through the trenches. Getting depth on the offensive line is an absolute must this offseason.

The Colts met with Jenkins virtually this offseason so he’s certainly on their radar and could be in the mix for the No. 21 pick.

2021 NFL mock draft: Round 1

The first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is a no-brainer, but from there all bets are off.

Here’s my first 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, and this year is no different — at least for now. The draft process is quite different this year, most notably without a scouting combine, so collegiate pro days will be more valuable than in recent years. Also valuable, in-game data retrieved from chips embedded into equipment.

Anyway, we’ll be unveiling more mock drafts than ever before this year, so be sure to check back with our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of our offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1

  • The New York Jets’ No. 2 pick … I’m not convinced they’re done with Sam Darnold, and putting more weapons around him will help see what he can bring to the table. He’s only 23, and Zach Wilson is far from a sure thing. I can envision Wilson being the pick and Darnold remaining on the roster, but for a few reasons (durability questions, level of competition, overrated QB class), I’m not nearly as high on Wilson as others. This pick is extremely fluid.
  • A trade is absolutely in play, and Carolina jumps out as one of the most viable partners. The Panthers could secure Wilson, while New York then moves back just a handful of spots and picks up multiple picks. It would then allow the Jets to spend a more palatable No. 8 overall pick on a receiver and build around Darnold.
  • That being said, it makes the Miami pick at No. 3 all that much harder to project. I’m not sold on DeVonta Smith being the second-best receiver, let alone the second one chosen, and this pick almost certainly becomes Ja’Marr Chase if Wilson is the Jets’ No. 2 overall selection.
  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying Chicago, New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.
  • Free agency opens March 17, and the player movement will undoubtedly create cause for an update after some of the dust settles.

Ravens have virtual meeting with Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins

The Baltimore Ravens appear to be taking a look at Oklahoma State T Teven Jenkins, meeting with him virtually ahead of the 2021 NFL draft.

The Baltimore Ravens tend to keep their draft plans pretty close to their chest. However, we can glean a little bit by who the Ravens meet with ahead of the 2021 NFL draft. According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, Baltimore has met with Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins.

Jenkins is considered to be a first-round option, currently ranked No. 36 on Draft Wire’s big board. With current right tackle Orlando Brown Jr. looking to be traded, the Ravens could very well have a huge hole to fill on their offensive line come draft day and Jenkins could be the solution.

Of course, even if Baltimore doesn’t trade Brown, Jenkins would still make a lot of sense. He’s played at both guard and tackle, providing the type of versatility the Ravens love to see in their offensive lineman. And with right guard still being an open spot after last season’s lackluster play, Jenkins could find a home there if Brown sticks around.

Even if Baltimore manages to get lucky and can retain Brown while having an answer at right guard, the lack of depth at tackle is concerning enough to still warrant spending an early-round selection on someone like Jenkins. Tyre Phillips simply wasn’t very good his rookie season and with D.J. Fluker’s lackluster play and free-agent status, it makes more sense for the Ravens to stack talent at the position this offseason.

According to Jordan Reid of The Draft Network, Jenkins certainly plays like a Raven.

“A well above average finisher, Jenkins is the type of offensive lineman that attempts to humiliate players in the opposite color jersey. The echo of the whistle doesn’t slow down his process and he continues on with his process until he wants to conclude.”

It’s important to note that player meetings ultimately mean very little come draft day. There are 31 other teams with their own needs up and there’s no indication where Baltimore ranks any player on their draft board. For that matter, the Ravens could address their offensive line solely through free agency and enter the 2021 NFL draft without a need at tackle. But in an offseason that has no NFL Scouting Combine and will be virtual, any clues are welcome ones.

Report: Colts virtually meeting with OT Teven Jenkins

Teven Jenkins virtually met with the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts have already met or will meet with former Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, per Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

The Colts will be meeting with almost every prospect during the pre-draft process so while this isn’t the most pressing news, it does come at a position of need at left tackle.

Finding a replacement for Anthony Castonzo will be among the priorities this offseason and doing so might have to come through the draft. With potential cap restraints after some extensions, the Colts will have to go the cheaper route at left tackle.

The Draft Network believes Jenkins is scheme versatile and will eventually turn into a starter. Jenkins is ranked No. 6 in Draft Wire’s offensive tackle rankings ahead of the draft.

The Colts have several options waiting for them at No. 21 and Jenkins could very well be in the mix.

Cardinals have interest in Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins

Arizona is one of a number of teams who have met or will meet with the Oklahoma State tackle.

The Arizona Cardinals could fill a number of needs in this year’s NFL draft scheduled at the end of April. Their biggest current needs appear to be at cornerback, receiver and the offensive line.

They have or will meet with an offensive line prospect they could consider with the 16th pick in the draft.

According to Justin Melo, the Cardinals are one of many teams who either have met with or will meet with Oklahoma State tackle Teven Jenkins.

Jenkins played both tackle positions and also some guard in college at Oklahoma State. He started 35 of 37 games in three years and played in an Air Raid offensive scheme. He is 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds.

He is not considered one of the top tackle prospects like Rashawn Slater or Christian Darrisaw, but Jenkins might fit the Cardinals’ offensive scheme perfectly.

Titans met with Washington DL Levi Onwuzurike among 5 prospects

Levi Onwuzurike could be a draft target for the Titans in the second round.

On Wednesday, we learned of five more prospect meetings the Tennessee Titans have taken part in ahead of the 2021 NFL draft on April 29.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Titans met virtually with Oklahoma State offensive tackle, Teven Jenkins, who is ranked as the No. 6 player at his position in this year’s class by Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling.

We also learned that Tennessee has met with four defensive prospects from Washington, including cornerback Elijah Molden, defensive back Keith Taylor, defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike and outside linebacker Joe Tryon, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport.

Onwuzurike is perhaps the most intriguing name of that bunch. He’s someone I have the Titans grabbing in the second round of my recent mock draft with the team needing help upfront.

The Washington product is already a solid run defender and has shown flashes of having what it takes to be a top-notch interior pass rusher. Onwuzurike could be a great running mate with Jeffery Simmons.

The Titans should be in the market for defensive line help no matter what, but how early they address the need could depend on what happens with DaQuan Jones, who is a pending free agent.

In case you missed any of the other prospect meetings the Titans have held, you can check out the full list of every single one we know down below.

Report: Jags have met virtually with Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins

The Jags have met with a prospect who could be around for pick No. 25 in OT Tevon Jenkins.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a team that has often been associated with the offensive tackle market as they have a decision to make on the blindside. With Cam Robinson’s contract expiring, they now have to decide if he will be the one protecting likely No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence, or will it be someone else.

Aside from the free agent and trade market, the Jags could find an answer in the draft by taking an early-round selection. While he’s played more right tackle than left, one player who could be on the table is Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins, who Justin Melo of the Draft Network is reporting met with the Jags virtually, along with many other teams.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jenkins, who is 6-foot-6, 310 pounds, has taken 483 snaps as a left tackle. However, his total snap count at right tackle (1,844) is significantly higher. For that reason, it’s difficult to see the Jags drafting him as they might want a veteran on the blindside and would prefer not to give up on right tackle Jawaan Taylor so early in his career.

Regardless of how unlikely it is for the team to draft Jenkins, many draft analysts have praised his talent as he’s shown the ability to hold his own in the passing game with quick feet and also be a powerful mauler as a run blocker. Most view him as a late first-round talent, which would put him in play for picks No. 25 and No. 33 if the Jags wanted to draft him.

Packers meet virtually with Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins

The Packers are among many teams that have met or will meet with Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins.

The Green Bay Packers will get a closer look at one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the 2021 NFL draft.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Packers have met or will meet with Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins, a potential first-round pick.

It’s possible Jenkins could be in play for the Packers at No. 29 overall. Offensive tackle looks like a top need, and Jenkins figures to be one of the top players at the position. The Packers might be without left tackle David Bakhtiari to start next season, and the team already released veteran Rick Wagner, creating the need.

Jenkins, a 35-game starter at Oklahoma State, might be a long-term answer for the Packers at right tackle.

The Draft Network believes Jenkins has the size and skill set to be a starter at either tackle or guard at the next level. According to Pro Football Focus, Jenkins gave up just two sacks and 32 total pressures over his final three seasons.

In college, Jenkins started games at left tackle, right tackle and guard. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selection.
