WR Javon Wims, TE Jesper Horsted are next men up for Bears

With WR Taylor Gabriel and TE Ben Braunecker remain in concussion protocol, the Bears will turn to Javon Wims and Jesper Horsted to step up.

With receiver Taylor Gabriel and tight end Ben Braunecker still in concussion protocol, the Bears will turn to a couple of young guns to step up in their absence.

Second-year receiver Javon Wims and rookie tight end Jesper Horsted both flashed last Thursday in a 24-20 win over the Lions. Wims tied a career day — five catches for 56 yards. Horsted, playing in his second career game, caught his first career touchdown pass — a 18-yard dime from Mitchell Trubisky in the third quarter.

Wims filled in for the injured Gabriel last Thursday and saw starter snaps with 54, including 16 runs. He caught five passes on his six targets.

Wims and Horsted project as intriguing prospects for the Bears in the future, but especially heading into these final four games.

As the Bears are in the thick of a NFC Wild Card push, they’re going to need their young core — among them Wims and Horsted — to step up against some quality opponents.

That all starts Thursday as the Bears host the Cowboys (6-6) at Soldier Field in primetime.

Bears Injury Report: Prince Amukamara, Ben Braunecker, Taylor Gabriel DNP Monday

The Bears released their first practice report ahead of Thursday’s game vs. Cowboys, and CB Prince Amukamara DNP with a hamstring injury.

The Chicago Bears released their first injury report ahead of Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, and cornerback Prince Amukamara did not practice Monday with a hamstring injury.

Amukamara, who had five combined tackles in a Week 13 win over the Detroit Lions, was seen with trainers following a play during the game.

Tight end Ben Braunecker and receiver Taylor Gabriel remain on the Bears’ injury report following concussions suffered in Week 12 against the New York Giants. Both did not play against the Lions last Thursday nor did they practice Monday.

Right tackle Bobby Massie also remains on the injury report as he nurses a high-ankle sprain that’s expected to sideline him for a few weeks. Linebacker Danny Trevathan, who suffered an elbow dislocation against the Lions in Week 10, also did not practice.

Bears Week 13 Inactives: Taylor Gabriel, Ben Braunecker among inactives vs. Lions

The Bears released their inactives against the Lions, which includes the absences of Taylor Gabriel, Ben Braunecker and Sherrick McManis.

The Chicago Bears released their inactives ahead of today’s game against the Detroit Lions, and there are no real surprises considering Wednesday’s practice report.

Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel, tight end Ben Braunecker, right tackle Bobby Massie, cornerback Sherrick McManis, tight end Adam Shaheen, linebacker Danny Trevathan and defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson are all inactive for this Thanksgiving Day game.

With Gabriel’s absence, wide receiver Riley Ridley is active for the second time in his career and figures to get some action today.

The Bears are thin at tight end with Braunecker and Shaheen being inactive, which leaves them with Jesper Horsted and JP Holtz at tight end.

On the offensive line, Cornelius Lucas will start for the injured Massie, who is expected to be out for a few weeks with a high-ankle sprain. Rookie offensive lineman Alex Bars is also active for the Bears.

Here are the Lions’ inactives, who will be without Matthew Stafford, Jamal Agnew and Damon Harrison.

Bears Week 13 injury designations: 6 players ruled out for Thanksgiving

The Detroit Lions Week 13 opponent, the Chicago Bears, have declared their injury designations and have ruled out 6 players for Thanksgiving.

The Detroit Lions (3-7-1) Week 13 opponent, the Chicago Bears (5-6), have declared their injury designations ahead of their Thanksgiving day matchup at Ford Field.

The Bears only have six players listed on their injury report, but all six are not be cleared to play on Thursday.

Ruled out

WR Taylor Gabriel (concussion)
TE Ben Braunecker (concussion)
TE Adam Shaheen (foot)
RT Bobby Massie (ankle)
LB Danny Trevathan (elbow)
S Sherrick McManis (groin)

Gabriel and Braunecker are both in the league’s concussion protocol and will miss this game. This is good news for the Lions as the last time these two teams faced off, Gabriel and Braunecker each scored a touchdown — two of the three scored by the Bears offense on the day.

Braunecker isn’t the only tight end ruled out for the Bears in this game. Starter Trey Burton was recently placed on injured reserve and reserve Adam Shaheen is also out. The Bears will now turn to their fourth option at tight end — JP Holtz.

Right tackle Bobby Massie is expected to miss several weeks with his ankle injury and the Bears will likely have to turn to former Lion Cornelius Lucas to start in his place.

Starting linebacker Danny Trevathan is the Bears biggest loss on defense and he will be replaced in the starting lineup by Nick Kwiatkoski. Kwiatkoski has nine tackles, a sack, and an interception against the Lions last time out.

McManis was the Bears’ third option at safety, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them lean on their nickel cornerbacks more in this game.

WR Taylor Gabriel, TE Ben Braunecker among 6 Bears ruled out vs. Lions

The Bears have released their final injury report ahead of Thursday’s game against the Lions, and they’ve ruled out six players.

The Chicago Bears will be without six players when they face the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.

The Bears released their final injury report ahead of Thursday’s game, and wide receiver Taylor Gabriel (concussion), tight end Ben Braunecker (concussion), right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle), cornerback Sherrick McManis (groin), tight end Adam Shaheen (foot) and linebacker Danny Trevathan (elbow) have all been ruled out against the Lions.

Gabriel, Braunecker, Massie, McManis and Shaheen will not make the trip to Detroit.

The Bears, who were already thin at tight end, are even thinner at the position with Braunecker and Shaheen’s injuries. That leaves Jesper Horsted and JP Holtz as the Bears’ tight ends heading into Thursday’s game against the Lions.

With Gabriel’s absence, expect to see a lot more of receiver Anthony Miller, who is coming off his best game this season with six catches for 78 yards, and Javon Wims. Rookie Riley Ridley might even see his first action this season.

With Massie being out for the next few weeks, expect to see Cornelius Lucas in his place, which makes the right side of that offensive line vulnerable. Rashaad Coward has been filling in for Kyle Long at right guard after he was sent to season-ending injured reserve. Expect rookie Alex Bars to also be active tomorrow with Massie’s absence.

Week 13 Injury Report: 6 Bears miss Tuesday’s practice

WR Taylor Gabriel and TE Ben Braunecker remain sidelined with concussions in the Bears’ Tuesday injury report ahead of Thursday’s game.

The Chicago Bears released their injury report following Tuesday’s practice, and it wasn’t encouraging news for those injured Bears.

Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel (concussion) and tight end Ben Braunecker (concussion) were among six Bears that did not practice Tuesday ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Right tackle Bobby Massie, who suffered a high-ankle sprain against the New York Giants, is expected to miss several weeks with the injury. Cornelius Lucas is expected to relieve him in his absence.

Tight end Adam Shaheen missed practice again with a foot injury that’s expected to sideline him for the third straight game, which leaves the Bears thin at tight end. Jesper Horsted and JP Holtz will lead Chicago at tight end for Thursday’s game.

Special teams standout and cornerback Sherrick McManis also missed his second straight practice after suffering a groin injury against the Giants. Linebacker Danny Trevathan remains sidelined with an elbow injury.

Don’t expect to see Bears WR Taylor Gabriel or TE Ben Braunecker on Thanksgiving

Matt Nagy says it will “probably be a stretch” to see Bears WR Taylor Gabriel or TE Ben Braunecker play Thanksgiving vs. Lions.

As the Chicago Bears prepare to face the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, they’ll likely do it down two offensive weapons.

Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel and tight end Ben Braunecker remain in concussion protocol, and both aren’t expected to play Thursday against the Lions.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said that it “would be probably a stretch” for Gabriel or Braunecker to play on Thanksgiving.

The Bears are already thin at tight end before Braunecker’s concussion, as Trey Burton is on injured reserve and Adam Shaheen is sidelined with a foot injury. Now, it’ll be the Jesper Horsted and J.P. Holtz show.

Gabriel’s absence could open the door for rookie receiver Riley Ridley, who’s been inactive this season on the 53-man roster. With Gabriel inactive, look for Anthony Miller, Javon Wims and Ridley along with Allen Robinson on offense.

Bears Injury Report: Taylor Gabriel and Ben Braunecker sidelined with concussions

There were 2 surprises on the Bears’ injury report ahead of Thursday’s game against the Lions in WR Taylor Gabriel and TE Ben Braunecker.

Following Sunday’s victory over the Giants, the Bears have a quick turnaround ahead of Thursday’s meeting against the Lions.

While Monday wasn’t an official practice day — it was a walkthrough, as the team played yesterday — there were several concerns on Monday’s theoretical practice injury report.

Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel and tight end Ben Braunecker were among six Bears that did not practice on Monday. Gabriel and Braunecker suffered concussions, which makes their status for Thursday iffy at best.

This is Gabriel’s fourth concussion of his career and the second this season. Gabriel was sidelined with a concussion for two games earlier this season after injuring his head against the Redskins in Week 3.

Right tackle Bobby Massie suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Giants, which is expected to sideline him for a few weeks. The status for special teams standout and cornerback Sherrick McManis isn’t much better, as he sustained a groin injury.

Adam Shaheen remains sidelined with a foot injury, which leaves the Bears thin at the tight end position considering Trey Burton’s placement on injured reserve and Braunecker’s concussion. That leaves Jesper Horsted, J.P. Holtz and Bradley Sowell as the Bears’ tight ends.

Linebacker Danny Trevathan remains sidelined with an elbow injury, which many expected to send him to injured reserve and end his season. But he remains on the active roster as the team looks for any positive signs of a potential return this season.

Bears OC Mark Helfrich: Receivers’ dropped passes have been ‘stone-cold drops’

The Bears offense has struggled mightily this season, and dropped passes by receivers has been a problem for Chicago.

[jwplayer CyWAa1YN-ThvAeFxT]

The Chicago Bears offense has been bad, even historically bad at times this season. And while a bulk of that falls on the struggles of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and play-caller Matt Nagy, there’s plenty of blame to go around.

Look no further than the Bears’ receiving corp., who were believed to have been the strongest group at that position in quite awhile in Chicago. Instead, they’re a group that has the second-most dropped passes in the NFL with 17.

“Our drops generally have been … stone-cold drops,” offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich said. “Clean drops. And that’s not good. Every day, they’re doing drills that are working to correct that.”

Even though Tarik Cohen, a running back, leads the Bears in dropped passes, he’s a big part of that receiving game. Allen Robinson actually leads Bears receivers with four drops, followed by Anthony Miller with three dropped passes.

The Bears receivers will look to rebound against a struggling New York Giants defense Sunday at Soldier Field.

Giants vs. Bears: 6 things to know about Week 12

The New York Giants and Chicago Bears square off on Sunday in Week 12, so here are six things fans should know.

The New York Giants (2-8) head out to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears (4-6) in a meeting between two of the NFC’s most disappointing teams this season.

Here are six things to know:

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The history

This is the 52nd meeting between two of the NFL’s most iconic franchises dating back to 1925. With a win on Sunday the Giants would improve their all-time record against the Bears to 22-28-2. A victory this week would also improve the Giants’ road record against the Bears to 12-13.

The Giants are making their first trip to Soldier Field since 2013, a 27-21 Bears victory on Thursday Night Football in Week 6.

The teams have met just 18 times since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger and had played only three times between 1970 and the January 5, 1986 NFC Divisional Playoff game in which the Bears shut the Giants out, 21-0, at Soldier Field.

The Giants are 7-5 against the Bears since the teams last met in the postseason — a 31-3 victory in the 1991 NFC Divisional Playoffs.
