Ravens fall to 7-4 as offense sputters in 18-16 loss to Steelers in Week 11

Lamar Jackson will have to wait a few weeks to get that much-needed win over the Steelers after the Ravens sputtered in neutral for most of the afternoon in an 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium.

The NFL’s No. 1 ranked quarterback in QBR, Jackson was 16-33 passing for 207 yards (6.3 avg), one touchdown, one interception, and a 66.1 rating, the lowest of this season.

Jackson had four carries for 46 yards, while Derrick Henry was held to 65 yards (5.0 avg) on 13 carries and one rushing touchdown, tying the single-season franchise record for touchdowns.

Zach Orr’s maligned defense held Pittsburgh to 4-16 on third downs and 303 total yards, but Pittsburgh held the football for 36:22, compared to Baltimore’s 23:38.

The Steelers held the Ravens ‘ top-ranked offense to 329 yards and just 124 yards rushing. Justin Tucker’s two missed field goals will further magnify the two-point loss. On the day, Tucker was 1-3 on field goal attempts, while Steelers kicker Chris Boswell was a perfect 6-6, including a 57-yard field goal.

Baltimore will quickly regroup before a massive Monday night matchup against Jim Harbaugh and the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers.

Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase almost spoiled the Purple Rising party, as the former LSU star logged 11 catches on 17 targets for 264 yards (26.4 average) and three touchdowns, with a long of 70 yards for a touchdown.

In another near-perfect performance, Jackson was 25-33 passing for 290 yards (8.8 avg), four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 141.4 rating. His AFC North rival, Joe Burrow, did his part for the Bengals, hanging in the pocket as he went 34-56 passing for 428 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

The Ravens defense allowed 470 yards, as Cincinnati was 8-16 on third downs.   Baltimore was sloppy on the night, with 11 penalties for 81 yards.

John Harbaugh on Tavius Robinson: He plays like a Raven

At any level of football, any time a coach invokes the team’s branding to describe an individual player, it’s gigantic praise.

Backup strongside outside linebacker Tavius Robinson was one of the Baltimore Ravens main heroes on Saturday. With 36 seconds left in the game, and Baltimore leading 13-12, Robinson made the game-saving tackle on the Falcons’ two-point conversion attempt.

He burst into the opposing backfield untouched, and recorded a critical TFL.

After the game, John Harbaugh paid Robinson the ultimate complement.

“If you want to talk about ‘Playing like a Raven,’ if that’s a term that you want to use, just tag it right next to his name,”  Baltimore’s head coach told reporters after the game.

“He’s that kind of guy.”

At any level of football, any time a coach invokes the team’s branding to describe an individual player, it’s gigantic praise. While he won’t be usurping Kyle Van Noy as the starter, Robinson will no doubt have a major role to play this season in blitzing packages on opponent passing downs.

Robinson will be heavily involved in the plays Zach Orr calls that have a heavy emphasis on edge rushing.

The Ravens returned to the field for live game action for the first time since their heartbreaking, 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game.

Baltimore hosted Philadelphia at M&T Bank Stadium, with both teams on similar arcs, and championship paths. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson sat out along with key starters on both sides of the football.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 16-13 victory after Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones — who had just entered the game — was sacked and fumbled on the next play.

The recovery by Patrick Johnson gave Elliott his final opportunity of the night.

The Ravens had a day off from training camp on Thursday but returned to the Under Armour Performance Center on Friday and Saturday for their first two full-padded summer practices. Lamar Jackson returned to the lineup after a medical evaluation for flu-like symptoms. At the same time, the team honored the late Jacoby Jones on the day that family and friends traveled to New Orleans for his funeral services. The Baltimore Ravens finished the season with a league-high 60 sacks in 2023. One major component to the success of the Ravens’ pass rush last season was veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney finished with 9.5 sacks, the second most on the team behind defensive tackle Justin Madubuike.

With Clowney’s departure to sign with the Carolina Panthers this offseason, Baltimore will need several players to step up this season to fill the hole on the edge. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr was asked who could make up for the production in Clowney’s absence.

“I think the production can be made by a lot of those guys,” Orr said. “[There are] a lot of candidates in that room, specifically. Obviously, you’ve got David Ojabo, and we’ve got Kyle Van Noy back, which helps out. ‘Daf’ [Odafe Oweh] – we expect him to have a big year. ‘T-Rob’ [Tavius Robinson], Malik Hamm … I mean, [there are] a lot of guys. But I don’t think the production just has to come from that room. You mentioned Travis Jones earlier. [Justin] Madubuike, Michael Pierce, ‘Broddy’ [Broderick] Washington … That whole front, the [linebackers], blitzes … I think we can make that production up in a lot of different ways.”

The Ravens did not make any significant moves at the outside linebacker position after losing Clowney; instead, they relied on the young talent on the roster. A veteran signing closer to the start of the season would not be a surprise, though, as the Ravens did the same thing last year with Clowney and Kyle Van Noy.

The Baltimore Ravens have officially reported to the Under Armour Performance Center for the start of training camp with the first practice scheduled for Sunday morning.

There will be starting jobs and roster spots up for grabs, which should make for some intriguing position battles throughout camp and the preseason.

Currently, the Ravens have 90 players on their roster, and that will be trimmed down to 53 ahead of the start of the regular season, and by August 27.

The Baltimore Ravens will look for multiple players to step up in their outside linebacker room during the 2024 season. The team lost outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, paving the way for younger players to take over his snaps and contribute.

One of the edge rushers expected to take on a much more significant role this upcoming year is second-year player Tavius Robinson. When asked what Robinson can bring to the table, fellow outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy praised the former Ole Miss star, saying that he’s getting better every day.

“Honestly, [he’s] getting better every day. I know that’s cliche to say, but he’s honestly getting better each and every day. He’s doing the right things. Every time you understand concepts and defenses, you graduate from football 101 to football 102, [and] you’re going to see improvements. I think his familiarity of understanding the defense more and more each day, he’s allowed to play faster, play with more confidence and swagger. I think that’s what we’re going to see this year.”

Robinson played a much bigger role during his rookie season than anticipated, finishing the year with 26 total tackles and one sack while also defending the run well. His development could be key for a Ravens defense that needs their younger contributors to step up, with Robinson hopefully being one of those options.
