The Baltimore Ravens entered the 2024 NFL Draft needing to address the offensive line with multiple selections. After taking Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten in the second round, the Ravens did not select another offensive lineman until the seventh round when they took Michigan State center Nick Samac with the No. 228 overall pick.

Similar to fourth-round wide receiver Devontez Walker earlier in the day, Samac had an emotional phone call with general manager Eric DeCosta and head coach John Harbaugh after being drafted by Baltimore.

After losing center Sam Mustipher in free agency, Samac has a clear path to earning the backup role to starter Tyler Linderbaum. Samac could also compete for a starting guard position after the Ravens lost both Kevin Zeitler and John Simpson in free agency.

Baltimore has a notable track record of developing mid-to-late-round offensive linemen, with recent examples including Ben Powers, Bradley Bozeman, and even the undrafted Patrick Mekari. While Samac might not see the field right away for the Ravens, there is a solid chance that he could find his way into the lineup down the road after learning under renowned offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris.

What Michigan State center Nick Samac Brings adds to the Ravens

The Ravens took Samac out of Michigan State in the seventh round; only 29 spots ahead of the infamous “Mr. Irrelevant” position.

When Baltimore Ravens rookie camp opens, center Nick Samac will be as motivated as they come. The Ravens took Samac out of Michigan State with pick No. 228 in the seventh round. That’s only 29 spots ahead of the infamous “Mr. Irrelevant” position.

Centers are a somewhat devalued position in the NFL Draft these days, so it’s quite common for players at this position to have to wait until day three to get their name called.

However, Samac will be inspired to show the football world that he deserved to be drafted much higher than in the final round. Health is a big reason he fell down the draft boards, as his season ended early due to a fractured fibula. This likely cost him a position on one of the All-Big Ten teams, and he instead had to settle for honorable mention.

So he has much to prove this summer, and one can expect him to put in the extra work.

And he entered his final season in East Lansing fired up to prove himself, as he told the media he had a “chip on the shoulder for sure.” The Mentor, Ohio native embodies the spirit of his collegiate program, as it’s prevalent to hear former Spartans use the phrase “chip on your shoulder.”

Kirk Cousins, Jack Conklin, and Connor Cook are just a few of the many former Spartans who have been known to often use this phrase in media interviews. During the mid-2010s, Samac’s position group at MSU literally wore t-shirts with actual poker chips attached to the shoulders.

Samac is expected to bring that never-satisfied, avoid complacency at all costs work ethic to the next level. The five-year player, who racked up close to 2,500 snaps, personifies the program’s hashtag #SpartansWill.

While he does provide potential, talent, and depth to the Ravens OL, he knows his odds of making the squad are long. Samac will no doubt use this reality as added motivation.

How did the Ravens do in draft value relative to the 2024 consensus board?

Value is an integral part of the draft process. Understanding the board is vital to judging how teams maximized value during the draft.

Establishing actual “value” on NFL draft prospects is incredibly difficult, with all 32 NFL teams having different schemes, cultures, and ideas of what elite talent looks like.

Arif Hasan of Wide Left Football creates the go-to consensus board, ranking the top 300 players in the draft class based on 101 big boards from draft analysts. As Hasan noted, “the consensus of these experts does a better predictive job than individual experts.”

It took a while, but a Michigan State football player was finally drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, and it was the lone Spartan who participated in the draft combine. Center and offensive guard Nick Samac was drafted with the No. 228 pick in the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round.

This brings it to the three consecutive NFL drafts where the Spartans had a player selected, after their historic draft streak was ended abruptly in 2021.

LOOK: Michigan State football OL Nick Samac at the NFL Combine

Nick Samac competed at the 2024 NFL Combine this past weekend:

Michigan State only sent one player to the 2024 NFL Combine, that being 5th year senior Nick Samac. Samac has been a mainstay on MSU’s offensive line, specifically at the center position, since he joined the program in 2019.

According to NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah, Samac has a late round draft grade, but does believe that Samac is worthy of a pick. Samac had a chance to validate that at the 2024 NFL Combine.

Check out the measurables Samac sported at the combine:

Samac did not run a 40-yard dash at the combine.

Samac joined the Spartans back in 2019 as a 4-star offensive guard, but took over the starting center role as a freshman after Matt Allen suffered an injury.
