Texas receives Rivals prediction for five-star RB Jerrick Gibson

Recruiting insiders and analysts are liking Texas’ chances in Jerrick Gibson’s recruitment.

Texas is trending for another elite running back. On Sunday, we learned recruiting analyst Jason Suchomel has placed a prediction for five-star Jerrick Gibson to choose the Longhorns.

We noted the other day that Gibson has a good relationship with Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice. The affinity for Choice appears to be paying off for Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

The running back position is becoming one of the greatest certainties for recruiting on the Forty Acres. Bijan Robinson’s career capped by his presumed first round pick status in the upcoming draft should be a Texas talking point over the next few years.

Last year, Texas won out for the nation’s No. 1 running back in Cedric Baxter. That the Longhorns are in the race at all is a testament to the value of Tashard Choice in recruiting.

Winning over elite running backs in SEC country is no small feat. Bringing a second elite Florida running back to Austin would be a monumental move. We’ll watch this recruitment closely as it plays out in the next few months.

Several Texas football players speak at Big 12 Media Days

The Texas players talked about leadership, team dynamics and scheme at Big 12 Media Days. Here’s some of the best quotes:

Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, DeMarvion Overshown, and Ovie Oghoufo spoke to Big 12 media in Arlington Thursday afternoon. The four were selected to represent the team as Steve Sarkisian begins his second season at Texas.

Among the important topics that emerged, team leadership and unity appeared to be a common theme for Steve Sarkisian and his players. Sarkisian had high praise for backup running back Roschon Johnson.

Much has been made of Johnson’s emerging role as the vocal leader. That sentiment was echoed by his head coach, who called Johnson an, “alpha,” who demanded the very best from his teammates.

The players also touched on the different personalities within the program, the new schematic additions, and the roles each player will fill.

Here’s a glimpse at what each player had to say to the media.

Texas Football: Steve Sarkisian’s culture is trending up

The Texas culture is improving and here’s how.

Culture is a vague term often thrown out when describing the ills of Texas football of late.

The consensus among fans is Texas needed a culture change after moving on from Tom Herman. Prior to Steve Sarkisian, the Texas football program was never completely united. This offseason, it appears Sarkisian’s culture improves every day.

One can point to a few moves that have already improved the culture at Texas. Inarguably, Texas has weeded out some of the negative energy from past regimes. After losing to Iowa State, Bo Davis insisted Texas needed to fix its culture. Players took his impassioned speech to heart. Those who bought in to Sarkisian’s vision stayed. As a result the program is stronger.

Here’s what you can keep an eye on to measure subjective cultural improvements.

Four-star RB Cedric Baxter Jr drops top seven schools, Texas makes the cut

Texas is in the mix for elite running back Cedric Baxter Jr.

Cedric Baxter Jr, one of the top running backs in the class of 2023, released his top seven schools on Saturday.

Texas made the cut with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and others. Baxter is rated by 247sports composite as the No. 4 running back in the country who has received 38 offers.

Andrew Ivins of 247sports compares Baxter to Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr in his scouting report:

A potential workhorse or feature back. The first one off the bus with his 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame. Could eventually push 230 pounds or more once in a college strength program. Played primarily safety and a little wide receiver before settling in as the starting running back at one of Orlando’s top high school programs. Produced right away as a junior averaging just over 8.5 yards per carry while facing stiff competition week in and week out.

Landing Baxter would be the first big win for new running backs coach Tashard Choice at Texas.

Report: Texas to hire Brennan Marion as wide receivers coach

Steve Sarkisian has found his new wide receivers coach.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has found his next wide receivers coach.
After moving on from Andre Coleman a couple of weeks ago, Texas will hire Brennan Marion as its wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

Marion has built an impressive resume as one of the bright young minds in the sport. He will bring in concepts from his “go-go” offense to Texas, a two-back formation that focuses on using RPOs to pressure the defense.

In his one season at Pittsburgh, Marion helped the Panthers win the ACC title and played a big role in wide receiver Jordan Addison taking home the Bilitnkof Award.

Marion will join the Texas staff after Pittsburgh’s bowl game on Thursday night.

The new Texas wide receivers coach has been one of the faster risers in the industry over the past few years.

The hiring of Marion marks the second new position coach on Steve Sarkisian’s offensive staff. Tashard Choice was hired as the running backs after Stan Drayton’s departure to Temple.

‘Isn’t it Ironic:’ Lincoln Riley, USC feel the sting of betrayal in Running Back Coach’s ‘Choice’

USC and Lincoln Riley stung by running backs coach Tashard Choice who makes quick exit for the Texas Longhorns.

“What goes around comes around.” It’s a saying many of us have heard all of our lives. “You reap what you sow.” That’s another one. The primary tenant, our choices have consequences and sometimes negative ones.

That’s what Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans are facing as they watch their recently hired running back’s coach, Tashard Choice, leave his post with USC to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff at the University of Texas. Choice, who played for the Dallas Cowboys, heads back to Texas, where he’s highly respected, having coached with the Cowboys before joining the college ranks at the University of North Texas.

Before his incredibly brief stint with USC, he was with his alma mater, Georgia Tech.

Everyone’s been feeling great over in Los Angeles after the Trojans poached Riley, several assistants, and players in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes from Oklahoma. A move that was reportedly in the works for months came to fruition while the sting of Oklahoma’s loss to in-state rival Oklahoma State was still fresh. Less than 24 hours after the upset loss, Riley got off a plane, still wearing his Oklahoma Sooners Jordan’s, and took the helm as the next head coach at USC.

What many in Los Angeles are feeling after Choice decided to go to the Texas Longhorns is what many who follow the Oklahoma Sooners felt about Riley’s decision.

Betrayed.

My colleague over at the Trojans Wire argues that this is different from what many college coaches do when they leave one job for another. But the feeling that Riley, and what many in Trojans’ circles are feeling, is not dissimilar to what Oklahoma leadership, players, coaches, and fans felt upon Riley’s departure.

Now a stung Lincoln Riley has to not only find a new running back coach, but wonder if anyone else will stab him in the back. – Matt Zemek, Trojans Wire

Is Tashard Choice’s decision to leave the Trojans after reportedly joining the staff unprofessional? On the surface, it would appear so. Sure, he had just joined the staff, but it’s no different from how coaches move around in college football circles. Here one day, gone tomorrow.

Every coach in college football is looking for the next great opportunity. That’s what Lincoln Riley cited as his reason for leaving the security and established success at the University of Oklahoma. Opportunity. Choice did the same.

And while Riley feels the sting of betrayal of a recently hired coach bailing for what he believed to be a better opportunity, he can look back and reflect on how his decision went down and wonder if he’s simply reaping what he sowed.
