Sooners become one of earliest schools to offer talented 2027 safety Chuck Roberts

Oklahoma is one of the earliest teams to offer 2027 safety Chuck Roberts.

Oklahoma is knee-deep in 2025 and 2026 recruiting. But don’t be fooled, the Sooners also have an eye into the future. They have extended an offer to an exceptional freshman talent out of California.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Oklahoma staff offered Chuck Roberts, a rising sophomore from Bishop Alemany High School. A six-foot, 180-pound safety, Roberts showcases elite football IQ and the ability to play in space and process plays at blazing speed.

For a freshman starting varsity, Roberts earned MaxPreps second-team All-American honors after posting 104 tackles, two sacks, and five pass breakups.

By all accounts, Roberts looks destined to be a future five-star and a national recruit. His growing offer sheet indicates he already has offers from Florida and Arizona.

Roberts also announced plans to transfer to IMG Academy to finish the remainder of his high school career, which will allow him to shine brightest playing a national schedule against some of the best teams in the country.

Son of former Notre Dame quarterback commits to Notre Dame

Think we’ll see him in any games?

There always is something gratifying about seeing a former Notre Dame player’s kid go out for the Irish. That’s exactly what 2024 outside linebacker recruit [autotag]Tommy Powlus[/autotag], son of former Irish quarterback [autotag]Ron Powlus[/autotag], is doing. Although he will begin his career without a scholarship, he seems excited about the opportunity to suit up for the same program his father did:

Powlus won’t have to travel far to go to Notre Dame as he currently attends Penn in Mishawaka. If, for whatever reason, college football doesn’t work out for him, he also is an accomplished lacrosse player, so he at least has another sport he can fall back on. All we know for certain is athleticism definitely runs in the family.

There isn’t a lot about Powlus online other than his MaxPreps and Hudl profiles as well as Penn’s athletic site. Even in those cases, not much information is offered. It looks like we all will finding out about him at the same time assuming he even gets the opportunity.

Notre Dame commit named Preseason MaxPreps First Team All-American

All eyes will be on him when he comes to the Irish.

[autotag]Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa[/autotag] is getting rave reviews from everywhere. The California-based four-star linebacker, who recently picked Notre Dame over USC and Ohio State, very well could follow in the footsteps of recent Irish linebacker All-Americans like [autotag]Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylon Smith[/autotag]. Until then, we will see how well he continues to develop at the prep level. MaxPreps thinks that will go well as he was named to its Preseason All-American First Team.

Here’s what MaxPreps has to say about the 2024 commit and his relevance to St. John Bosco in Bellflower:

“Played a huge role on defense for the 2022 MaxPreps National Champs racking up 111 tackles.”

Racking up that total in any season for the Irish would be nice. No Irish player has approached that number since [autotag]Te’von Coney[/autotag] had 116 and 123 tackles respectively in 2017 and 2018. That alone should give Irish fans reason to be excited about his arrival in a year’s time. And the fact that he chose the Irish over two other college football powerhouses makes it all the sweeter.

Two Sooners targets named top 5 high school running backs by MaxPreps

Taylor Tatum and Caden Durham, two players that the Sooners are targeting as part of their 2024 recruiting class were included in MaxPreps top 5 running backs in the country.

The Oklahoma Sooners are on a recruiting heater right now. On both sides of the ball, they’re earning big-time commitments in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Two players they are hoping to get some good news from soon are five-star running back Taylor Tatum and four-star running back Caden Durham. Both have been heavily projected to land with the Oklahoma Sooners to go with Xavier Robinson, the in-state Carl Albert product.

Out of Longview, Texas, Tatum was ranked the No. 1 running back in the nation heading into the 2023 season by MaxPreps Zack Poff.

Rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 33 touchdowns while leading the Lobos to a 14-1 record. A MaxPreps Junior All-America selection, he’s the top-rated running back in the Class of 2024 on 247Sports. Tatum is also a baseball standout and was recently a first-team all-district selection. – Poff, MaxPreps

The Sooners will learn their fate for Tatum on July 21. They seemingly hold a sizable lead over the USC Trojans. Oklahoma is predicted to land Tatum by each of the three major recruiting sites.

Durham, another highly-regarded running back, out of Duncanville, Texas, came in at No. 5 at the position. The 2022 Class 6A Offensive MVP is set for an August decision.

Oklahoma is considered to have a slight lead over the LSU Tigers. Texas A&M is also a team to watch in his recruitment.

Helped Panthers win their first state title since 1998, rushing for 102 yards and three scores in the 28-21 win over North Shore (Houston) in the 6A Division 1 state championship. He was a first-team selection on the MaxPreps Junior All-America squad after rushing for 1,960 yards and 36 touchdowns. – Poff, MaxPreps

The Sooners hope to continue that momentum to close out the month as they build toward another top-10 class. What better way to do that than by landing two top-five running backs?

No. 1 vs No. 2 high school football showdown: St. John Bosco vs Mater Dei

In Bosco-Mater Dei, 70 players have received an FBS offer. That shows how much talent these two teams have. Kickoff is Friday night at 7:30 in Santa Ana, Calif.

The biggest high school football game of the year, and maybe the biggest in regular season history, is set: No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) hosts No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) on Oct. 7 at the Santa Ana Bowl.

Last week, the Bosco Braves improved their record to 6-0 with a 49-3 win over rival Servite (Anaheim). The Mater Dei Monarchs, also now 6-0, won a tough Trinity League matchup 21-13 against JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano).

The two teams have a combined 70 players that are rated as a two-star recruit or higher by 247Sports, or who have landed at least one FBS offer. St. John Bosco has 38 while the Monarchs have 32.

This has become the biggest and best rivalry in high school football since 2016. The two schools have combined to produce over 150 players who have played at the FBS or FCS level over the last seven years.

Mater Dei has won seven of the last 10 meetings, including two in a row. The last time these two played as the top two teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 was in 2019. Current Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei led Bosco to a 39-34 comeback win in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. St. John Bosco trailed 28-5 late in the first half but Uiagalelei led the way back, throwing for 446 yards and five touchdowns.

The past two years, the Trojans picked up a few top Mater Dei recruits: four-star Raleek Brown, five-star Domani Jackson, four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis, four-star C.J. Williams, and four-star wide receiver Kyron Ware-Hudson.

Player profile: Mater Dei 2024 quarterback Elijah Brown

Texas commit Maalik Murphy named a player to watch during spring season

MaxPreps ranked the top 50 players to watch for this spring and Texas commit Maalik Murphy came in at No. 6 on their list.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Texas’ recruiting class will be how five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy performs during California’s spring season. COVID-19 wrecked the fall and Murphy’s high school, Serra, has a six-game season beginning March 12.

MaxPreps ranked the top 50 players to watch for this spring and Murphy came in at No. 6 on the list. Here is what the website had to say about the future Longhorn:

Split time under center last year and expect a monster junior campaign as the five-star quarterback takes over as the full-time starter.

Murphy has yet to take snaps as the full-time starter. He sat behind Doug Brumfield, a three-star prospect who was a member of UNLV’s 2020 recruiting class. Murphy’s five-star rating has come from 7v7 competitions and camps.

Question marks about Steve Sarkisian taking a commitment from a player who is largely inexperienced have seemingly risen. While Murphy has some of the biggest potential in the 2022 class, regardless of position, having an idea of what he can bring to the table in game-like scenarios would be nice.

Thankfully, Murphy will have live-action film in just under a week.

The future of the football program relies on Sarkisian’s quarterback take in the 2022 class. If Murphy ends up being the guy, this spring season is going to be crucial toward his development.
