Four-star RB Rickey Stewart commits to Texas

Texas recruiting is starting to pick up as another elite running back chooses the Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns’ 2025 recruiting class is starting to pick up steam. The Longhorns added yet another elite running back after leading the way in recruiting at the position the last couple of seasons.

Running backs coach Tashard Choice earned a commitment from Chapel Hill (TX) running back Rickey Stewart on Saturday. He ranks as the No. 20 overall running back and No. 247 overall player in the 247Sports composite, but those rankings might too heavily weigh the smaller school competition Stewart played against.

Stewart saw offers from Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee and Ole Miss among others after an impressive early start to his career. In his sophomore and junior seasons combined, Stewart ran for 5,117 yards, 68 touchdowns and around 10 yards per carry.

He would add another elite recruit to Texas running back coach Tashard Choice’s resume. Choice has brought his fair share of blue chippers to Austin including five-star back CJ Baxter and elite recruits in Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark.

Texas will look to build momentum off the strong recruiting start.

“They’ll look a little different in how they play the game, but the more Blue matures, he has a chance to be better [than Gibbs].”

Looking at the running backs Tashard Choice has recruited to Texas

Texas may have one of the best recruiters in the country.

Texas has become the premier destination for the top-ranked running backs in the country. There is one coach in particular that deserves his flowers for playing a large role in the recruiting success.

Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice has been an unsung hero for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail and on Saturday he struck again. When Texas lost Stan Drayton to Temple, it was a huge blow to the program and left some wondering if Steve Sarkisian could find someone that compares.

Well, for the second straight season Choice helped land one of the best running backs and players from the state of Florida, a state that the Longhorns prior to his arrival didn’t have the best luck in.

The Longhorns missed on names like Trey Sanders, Noah Cain, and T.J. Pledger at running back. From the span of 2016-2022 the program had landed just three Floridians. Now, with Choice’s ties to Florida the Longhorns have access to a state that is one of the most talent-rich in the country and have picked up consecutive commitments from top backs in Florida.

Let’s take a look at the major recruits Choice has hauled in for the Longhorns over the last couple years.

Four-star RB Jerrick Gibson commits to Texas

Jerrick Gibson commits to Texas setting up perhaps the best running back class for 2024.

Running back recruiting is Tashard Choice’s world, and we’re just living in it. The Texas running back coach earned a second elite running back commitment in three days with arguably the best running back in the nation, Jerrick Gibson.

The four-star running back made his intent to join the Longhorns known on Saturday. He joins fellow running back commit Christian Clark in what appears to be one of the best running back classes Texas has ever assembled.

We’ll let Gibson and Clark decide which back will be known as lightning and which one will be thunder. What seems evident is Texas should be set to run the football at an elite level for years to come.

Gibson is the No. 2 running back and No. 48 overall player in the 2024 On3 consensus.

Report: Four-star RB Christian Clark sets official visit to Texas

One of the top rated running backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle is set to make an official visit to Texas.

One of the top rated running backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle is set to make an official visit to Texas. Inside Texas reports Christian Clark is expected to make the trip to Austin in June.

247Sports’ composite lists Clark as the No. 3 player in the state of Arizona and a top-300 prospect nationally. He holds close to 30 offers, including Alabama, Georgia, USC and Florida State.

Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice sees Clark as a potential star.

“He said that when he watched my film. He was like, ‘this is literally a mini Bijan, another one.’ That means a lot, that he recognizes my talent for Bijan’s because I think he should be a top-five pick this year.”

Clark rushed for 737 yards and 11 touchdowns on seven yards per carry, also showing versatility by snagging 37 passes for 368 yards and five scores in his junior season. He is a hard-nosed runner with excellent breakaway speed and physicality.

Texas sits in good shape with the talented ball carrier. The Longhorns received a recent recruiting prediction for Clark in their favor.

Report: Tashard Choice turned down Rams’ RBs coaching job

Texas RBs coach Tashard Choice drew interest from the Rams but he turned them down this offseason

After Ra’Shaad Samples left his role as the Rams’ running backs coach, Los Angeles planned to move Thomas Brown back into that role. However, he was hired as the Panthers’ offensive coordinator, leaving the Rams without a running backs coach at the moment.

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports (subscription required), the Rams wanted to hire Texas RBs coach Tashard Choice but he turned down the job to coach their running backs. Aaron Wilson also reported he drew serious interest from the Rams but has decided to return to the Longhorns.

Per the report from 247Sports, Choice will receive a raise from the Longhorns after turning down the Rams.

The Rams are still filling out their coaching staff after making several changes, and they’ve begun bringing in some new faces – including OC Mike LaFleur, TEs coach Nick Caley and OL coach Ryan Wendell.

They still need a running backs coach, however, and that should be a role they look to fill soon.
