Dolphins add QB, WR to practice squad, cut ties with TE Hayden Rucci

The Dolphins now have five quarterbacks under contract.

The Miami Dolphins signed quarterback C.J. Beathard and wide receiver Tarik Black to their practice squad Wednesday, the team announced.

The Dolphins had one open spot on their practice squad after the Carolina Panthers signed Jonathan Harris on Tuesday. To make space for the duo they signed Wednesday, the Dolphins released rookie tight end Hayden Rucci.

Beathard, 30, was reportedly on the Dolphins’ “short list” back in September when Tua Tagovailoa was injured. The former Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers quarterback spent time with Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel early in his career. But Miami opted to sign Tim Boyle to the practice squad, instead.

With Tyler Huntley dealing with a shoulder injury and Tagovailoa still technically on the injured reserve, the addition of Beathard gives the Dolphins another passer to work with ahead of the expected Week 8 return of Tagovailoa.

Black, 26, has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s only appeared in one career game, though, finishing with one reception for 10 yards in a 2021 game with the Jets.

2 Steelers leave Sunday practice with injuries

Injuries are starting to pile uf for the Steelers at training camp.

The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered multiple injuries on Friday night in their 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans. The Steelers got back to work on Sunday preparing to take on the Buffalo Bills and had two players leave practice with injuries as well.

On a day when running back Cordarrelle Patterson and defensive lineman Dean Lowry were able to finally practice this training camp, wide receiver Tariq Black and cornerback Kalon Barnes both had their practices cut short.

Head coach Mike Tomlin characterized the injuries as soft-tissue injuries, a hamstring for Black and a quad for Barnes.

Black only played seven snaps against the Texans. Barnes played over half of the defensive snaps for Pittsburgh Friday night.

Pittsburgh signed Barnes for his second stint with the Steelers in January of this year. Black was signed by the Steelers as a free agent in late July. Black is a longshot to make the team but Barnes shows a great deal of promise.

Pittsburgh Steelers sign former Longhorn wide receiver Tarik Black

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Black to a one-year deal worth $795,000

The Steelers offense has a new weapon in former Longhorns wide Receiver Tarik Black. On Monday, Pittsburgh signed Black to a one-year deal worth $795,000. Former Michigan star Roman Wilson suffered an ankle injury in practice on Tuesday, which could lead to more playing time for Black.

As Black starts his Steelers career, he will be looking to appear in his first NFL game since the 2021 season. He made his NFL debut with the New Jets in Week 18, recording one catch for ten yards on two targets. While he has yet to find a permanent role on an NFL team, Black was a solid receiver in college.

In 29 games with the Longhorns and Wolverines, Black hauled in 50 receptions for 747 receiving yards and scored three touchdowns. He averaged  14.9 yards per catch and a career-high 24 with the Longhorns.

While Black only spent one year in Texas, he made the most of his opportunities. In 10 games, he recorded 240 receiving yards, the second-most of his career. As he battles for a roster spot in Pittsburgh, he will be looking to show that he can be a reliable depth option when called upon.

With the preseason just beginning, Black has plenty of time to show the Steelers why he should be on the roster when they open their season against the Falcons on September 8. Many in Austin will be closely watching as rosters continue to get trimmed down and Black looks to take advantage of his latest chance in the NFL.

He originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts after the 2021 NFL Draft but spent the whole season on the practice squad. Over the last few years, Black has been signed and released by various teams, with Pittsburgh being his latest stop.
