2024 NFL draft: Grading the pick of WR Roman Wilson in the third round

2024 NFL draft: Grading the pick of WR Roman Wilson in the third round

After trading away wide receiver Diontae Johnson, a starting wide receiver became a top need in the 2024 NFL draft. This is despite the Steelers signing multiple veteran free agents. After going offensive line with the first two picks in the draft, the Steelers opted for former Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round.

What does Wilson bring to the party for the Steelers? Critics of Wilson will question whether or not he can line up consistently on the outside at only 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds but physically he’s practically a clone of former Steeler Antonio Brown.

Wilson’s game is all about his speed, explosion, competitive nature and sure hands. Wilson is very difficult to press and if you miss, he is gone. He is one of those receivers who has a second gear when he needs it and we hope to see more of it in the NFL.

Overall, we give this pick a B+. Wilson should get worked into the offense quickly and has all the makings of the next great Steelers receiver to come from the middle rounds.

How Roman Wilson fits with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steel City gets a new weapon. #GoBlue

With the 84th pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected wide receiver Roman Wilson.

Wilson recorded 48 receptions, 789 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024, and he was a huge part of the national title run. He kept Michigan’s season alive with a spectacular leaping grab late in the fourth quarter against Alabama and tied the game soon after with a touchdown grab.

Wilson fits perfectly into this offense. The Steelers have a true X receiver, George Pickens, and get the perfect complement, Roman Wilson. Wilson excels at getting open on over routes and can use his speed to win in the red zone. He will probably take most of his snaps in the slot at the next level, which fits his skill set better than playing outside.

Wilson also does a great job of finding space when plays break down. Pittsburgh is working with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields at quarterback — both of whom like to make off-script plays, so there should be some nice chemistry from the get-go.

The expectation is Wilson gets legitimate snaps in Year 1. As previously mentioned, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a lot of other receiving weapons so Wilson might be starting in the slot Week 1.

For fantasy football nerds, taking Wilson late in the draft is a good idea if you want a sleeper.

Wilson is also a very willing run blocker. He played in a run-first scheme, so he didn’t really have a choice but to embrace the physicality of blocking. Of course, Pittsburgh is a town that encapsulates the violent nature of football, and having that Midwestern grit is essential. Wilson’s experience with the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is also key here. The Steelers have a couple of historic rivalries with their divisional opponents, and Wilson is likely to fully embrace the heightened stakes that come with regional beef.

2024 NFL draft: Steelers select WR Roman Wilson in third round

The Steelers filled a huge need at receiver in the third round.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to use the 2024 NFL draft to load up on the offensive side of the football. After using the first two picks on projected starting offensive linemen, Pittsburgh turned around and got themselves a starting wide receiver in former Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson with the No. 84 pick overall.

Wilson averaged 16.4 yards per catch in 2023 on a Michigan team that was very run-heavy. He was the favorite target of J.J. McCarthy and it was because he knows how to get open and he never drops the football.

On the Steelers Wilson is an easy pick to plug in as the starting slot wide receiver but we think he has the potential to start on the outside and help pull deep coverage away from George Pickens with that 4.39-second 40 speed.

Roman Wilson selected in third round of 2024 NFL draft

He’s gonna thrive in the league! #GoBlue

One thing Michigan football hasn’t been known for over the years has been wide receiver play. But that wasn’t always the case.

Once upon a time, the top receiver in Ann Arbor was destined to be a star at the next level. From Anthony Carter to David Terrell to Braylon Edwards, if you wore the No. 1, chances were you were destined to be a high-level NFL player.

But there’s been a dearth of high-end receivers at Michigan. Though there have been a few recent Wolverines drafted in the third round (Nico Collins and Amara Darboh), it was more likely that if you were a pass catcher in Ann Arbor you were going on Day 3 of the NFL draft or would be an undrafted free agent.

Enter Roman Wilson.

The Hawaii native changed his jersey from No. 14 to No. 1 and took the mantle as the prototypical wideout. A fast player who always managed to get open, Wilson may not have been the focal point of the Wolverine offense, but he was often stellar. His two long receptions against Alabama in the Rose Bowl helped secure the national championship game berth. There were other highlight-reel plays: the two touchdown catches against Nebraska and the TD against Ohio State. While he might not be mentioned in the same breath as Rome Odunze or Marvin Harrison Jr., he was well thought of in NFL circles and was an early NFL draft pick as a result.

On Friday, Wilson heard his name called when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft with the 84th pick.

After coming to Ann Arbor in 2020, Wilson had nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown in his first season. While he came alive the next two years, he was injured in Week 5 of each campaign. He rebounded in 2023, not missing any time due to injury while amassing 789 yards on 48 catches and 12 touchdowns.

Michigan WR Roman Wilson would ‘love’ to play with C.J. Stroud and Texans

In an exclusive interview with Texans Wire, former Michigan receiver Roman Wilson reveals his thoughts on former rival C.J. Stroud.

Could the Houston Texans still draft a receiver?

The AFC South champions acquired Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills. His addition should create potentially the best receiving trio in football alongside 2023 breakout star Nico Collins and second-year standout Tank Dell.

Questions still have persisted if the Texans could opt to add a young, cost-controlled talent in a loaded receiver draft class.

One potential option is Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson. The Swiss-army knife target thrived during his four seasons in Ann Arbor, but broke out in 2023 with 12 touchdowns and 789 receiving yards en route to a national championship.

Most scouts consider him to be one of the top receivers in the class. and expect him to hear his name called somewhere on Day 2 of next week’s draft.

At Michigan, Wilson faced then-Ohio State and now Texans’ quarterback C.J. Stroud twice. In both installments of “The Game,” Michigan walked away victorious.

Wilson, however, came away impressed with the rival passer. While enemies in college, Wilson would have no reservations about the idea of teaming up with the Buckeye legend.

“He’s a phenomenal quarterback, he’s a follower of God,” Wilson told Texans Wire of Stroud. “I remember in his commitment process, he was thinking about going to Michigan and and I kind of got to meet him for a little bit, talked to him. I mean, he’s a great guy and you know, I would love to play for him.”

Wilson would love to command the slot as Stroud’s next big target in Houston. The Texans’ quarterback piloted what many consider the best rookie quarterback season in NFL history while capturing NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and helping the Texans to an AFC South title and a playoff victory.

To his credit, Houston may very well have shared interest in Wilson. The team was present at the 2024 Reeses’ Senior Bowl where he dominated and they’ve shown a history of drafting Senior Bowl players, with Dell, Jarrett Patterson, and Xavier Hutchinson last year. Additionally, Wilson confirmed he spoke with Houston last month in Indianapolis.

“We talked a little bit,” Wilson said before dropping an inescapable caveat. “That was before they got Diggs. So I mean whatever happens, happens and I would love to play for the Texans”

It may be unlikely for Houston to invest the level of draft capital they’d need to secure Wilson after the heavy investment to bring Diggs from Buffalo. Still, the national champion would be an undeniable asset to the organization and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

Diggs, who completed his sixth 1,000-yard season between Buffalo and Minnesota, could be a one-and-done in The Loop. Houston voided the final three years of his contract, adding an extra $3.5 million to his current contract this upcoming season.

Maybe Wilson is on the shortlist of players whom Nick Caserio would pull the trigger to acquire. If so, two former Big Ten rivals could be fixtures in the AFC South for years to come.

Wilson recently partnered with Six Star Pro Nutrition, to help launch their new protein shake in Kellogg’s Froot Loops cereal flavor. The cereal flavored product, which launches this month, will be available exclusively at Sam’s Clubs locations. He took time to talk with the Texans Wire about his new partnership and his recruitment process as it relates to the Houston Texans.

Fans will have to wait and see if Houston is willing to throw further accelerant on their offense and add a dynamic talent like Wilson on Day 2. In the meantime, they may have to check out Sam’s Club if they want to see just how Wilson has prepared for the moment.

2024 NFL draft: Steelers snag Diontae Johnson replacement in latest ESPN mock

There’s no getting around it: The Steelers must use one of their seven picks in the upcoming NFL draft on a wide receiver.

There’s no getting around it: The Pittsburgh Steelers must use one of their seven picks in the upcoming NFL draft on a wide receiver. Not having filled the void left by the trade of leading receiver Diontae Johnson in free agency could force their hand early.

After taking Duke center Graham Barton with their first-round pick at No. 20, ESPN’s Field Yates has Pittsburgh taking Michigan receiver Roman Wilson.

The Steelers will likely target a wide receiver early in the draft, and Wilson has excellent route running skills, extremely reliable hands and elite speed (4.39 in the 40). Be it Russell Wilson or Justin Fields under center, pairing Wilson — who had 12 touchdowns in 2023 — with George Pickens would help this offense.

Johnson is one of the NFL’s better route runners, and, say what you want about him, he did improve his ball-dropping yips. Should everything Wilson boasted at the college level translate to the NFL, he could very well be an upgrade over Johnson.

If Russell Wilson wins the job this offseason, we’d hear a lot of “Wilson-to-Wilson,” which would only benefit third-year receiver George Pickens.

2024 NFL Draft: Steelers land 2 starters in new ESPN mock

This mock draft lands the Steelers two starters at key positions.

With less than a month to the 2024 NFL draft, the needs for the Pittsburgh Steelers are coming into clear view. Pittsburgh still needs a starting center, starting wide receiver and starting slot cornerback. That’s a tall order for a single draft but after 2023, we have confidence in General Manager Omar Khan that if anyone can do it, the Khan Artist can.

ESPN’s Field Yates has a new two-round mock draft out and he really took advantage of the depth in this draft to help the Steelers net a pair of starters with their two choices.

In the first round, Yates went with Duke offensive lineman Graham Barton. Here’s what he had to say about the pick:

Although wide receiver was a thought here after the Steelers tradedDiontae Johnson, Pittsburgh’s history of finding talented wideouts beyond the first round and the position’s depth in this class made me go another direction. Barton is among the most versatile linemen available, having played left tackle his final three seasons at Duke after playing center as a true freshman. I view him as an interior player in the NFL and a center for the Steelers, as he is arguably the most impressive run-blocker in the class. His versatility, core power and handwork all stood out to me when watching tape.

Moving to the second round, the Steelers selected speedy Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson. Yates offered up this commentary about the pick:

The Steelers will likely target a wide receiver early in the draft, and Wilson has excellent route running skills, extremely reliable hands and elite speed (4.39 in the 40). Be it Russell Wilson or Justin Fields under center, pairing Wilson — who had 12 touchdowns in 2023 — with George Pickens would help this offense.

This mock might be the definition of best-case scenario for the Steelers. Many fans will clamor that Barton isn’t a true center and they don’t want another Kendrick Green situation but Barton is an elite athlete and true five-tool lineman. And Wilson is one of the most polished receivers in the draft and a much better option than any of the free agents the Steelers have already signed.

Browns 2024 NFL draft profile: Roman Wilson is one of the most explosive WR’s this year

Wilson would be a great pick at 54

The trade with the Broncos for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy will bolster Cleveland’s roster, but they could still use more vertical speed. Michigan’s Roman Wilson, one of the most explosive wide receivers in the 2024 NFL draft, has plenty of it. The production wasn’t great, but the scheme in Michigan didn’t always give him the opportunities he deserved.

But when the Wolverines did air it out, Wilson was the guy JJ McCarthy looked for when they needed a big play. Though he has a limited route tree, Wilson is a good route runner with solid body control to throttle up and down with ease to use his speed as the great weapon it is.

Wilson has strong and reliable hands. This past season, he had only one drop on 67 targets and an impressive 16.4 yards per catch. He does most of his damage from the slot position but has shown he has the skill set to win on the outside as well.

A natural separator, he has to improve after the catch as he isn’t very elusive in the open field. Wilson will need to develop on the more technical side of the position and develop a deeper route tree, but he has elite speed, strong hands, and all the tools needed to be a great player at the next level.
