After running a 4.23 40-yard dash at the 2022 combine, Kalon Barnes looks to earn a roster spot at cornerback.
Welcome to the beginning of our 2023 season preview content!
Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at each player on the roster in-depth with backgrounds and how they currently project forward on the Minnesota Vikings roster.
What is the best-case scenario? What is the worst-case scenario? What should we expect from them during the preseason and beyond? We will break all of that down here.
As a staff, all of us at Vikings Wire ranked the entire 90-man roster 1-90 and will be releasing player profiles in reverse order.
The Vikings are back up to 53 players on the active roster
Injuries have been hitting the Minnesota Vikings relatively hard in the last month and they have had to make adjustments to the roster regularly.
This week was no exception. With left tackle Blake Brandel tearing his MCL against the Detroit Lions, he was destined for injured reserve. That move happened today, opening up a second roster spot, as the team hadn’t filled one of the two opened up when they placed Akayleb Evans and Ben Ellefson on injured reserve.
To fill those two spots, the Vikings signed cornerback Kalon Barnes off of the Miami Dolphins practice squad and linebacker William Kwenkeu off of their own practice squad.

Barnes has a lot of athleticism, including running a 4.22 40-yard dash, but lacks some of the technique at this time to thrive. The potential and team control through 2024 makes things very appealing.
Kwenkeu had been elevated multiple times on the season and his addition to the active roster felt inevitable.
The last move they made was signing defensive lineman Sheldon Day to the practice squad. A former fourth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, Day has played with four teams in his career most recently with the Cleveland Browns.
Barnes had yet to play a snap for the Dolphins since being signed after he was waived by the Carolina Panthers during this year’s final roster cuts. However, with the number of injuries that Josh Boyer’s unit had suffered in the secondary, there was a chance that he could be elevated if another player went down.
Now, Miami will have an open spot that they’ll need to fill.
The Vikings are set to add some speed to the cornerback position
After some maneuvering last week with injured reserve, there were two roster spots open. According to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, the Minnesota Vikings have filled one of those roster spots with rookie cornerback Kalon Barnes who they will sign off the Miami Dolphins practice squad.
Barnes made a name for himself at Baylor University playing cornerback. Known mostly for his speed, Barnes can rely on it a little bit too much in coverage. Here is what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had to say about Barnes.
“Cornerback with the traits worthy of consideration for a late-round pick. Barnes has legitimate track speed but his play can be too reliant upon that aspect of his game. He’s a better athlete than cover man, often losing track of his coverage duties. He’s athletic and has no excuses for not playing with better technique. Barnes’ length and ball skills could have a team willing to plug him into a practice squad slot to see if there is more consistent football ahead for him.”
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Barnes was a priority for this front office. They have prioritized the 10-yard split and his time of 1.53 ranks in the 87.4 percentile. Considering the Vikings just got beat multiple times deep, perhaps this is a smart strategy to pivot to.
Hear that the #Vikings are expected to add cornerback Kalon Barnes to their 53-man roster. He will be plucked off of Miami’s practice squad. Contract will run through 2024. Barnes was a #Skol pre-draft visit, ran a blazing 4.22 at the Combine. pic.twitter.com/NelLe8PVpl
Darryl Johnson and Kalon Barnes are now officially former Panthers, as the two have stuck on elsewhere.
The Carolina Panthers won’t be getting their choice of practice squad players from the pool of the 25 men they cut yesterday.
Per the league’s transaction wire, 33 players were claimed off waivers by teams on Wednesday. And just one of those players came from Carolina—defensive end Darryl Johnson.
Johnson is now headed over to the Seattle Seahawks, the old home of current Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer. Apparently, the Seahawks were just about in line with Fitterer—who traded for Johnson exactly one year and one day ago.
The 6-foot-6, 262-pounder played in three games for the team in 2021. He registered a single tackle over those appearances.
Also on the way out is cornerback Kalon Barnes, who will—per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network—be signing on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. He, like Johnson, was waived on Tuesday.
Barnes was a seventh-round pick by the Panthers this past spring. He recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time at the 2022 combine, clocking in at 4.23 seconds.
The Panthers have waived 2022 seventh-round pick Kalon Barnes.
The fastest man on the Carolina Panthers roster could be gone in a flash.
As first reported by Josh Klein of The Riot Report, the team has cut cornerback Kalon Barnes. Barnes was selected by Carolina in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft this past April.
Panthers have released CB Kalon Barnes, per league source.
Would be a candidate for practice squad if he clears waivers.
Before being plucked to the pros by Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, Barnes was plucked into the college game by Bears head coach Matt Rhule. The Silsbee, Texas native spent four years at Baylor University, where he transitioned from a wide receiver to a corner following his freshman campaign.
Barnes then turned heads (and stopwatches) at this year’s combine. There, he ran the 40-yard dash at a sizzling 4.23 seconds—the quickest amongst all players at the event.
He was also swift with the pen, as he became the first member of Carolina’s 2022 draft class to ink his rookie deal.
If the 23-year-old clears waivers, he is a strong candidate to land back on the team’s practice squad.
The Panthers have Madden’s fastest man not named Tyreek Hill.
Thursday brought us the latest batch of Madden NFL 23 ratings, with cornerbacks and interior defensive linemen getting their shine. As far as the former group goes for the Carolina Panthers, EA Sports developers recognized the wheels this franchise has assembled in its secondary.
The most potent set belongs to rookie Kalon Barnes—who registered not only the 2022 combine’s fastest 40-yard dash, but also the fastest time ever by a defensive back at 4.23 seconds. His 98 speed rating tops every single player in the game not named Tyreek Hill, Jameson Williams and Quez Watkins.
Joining the seventh-round pick in the 90+ speed club from that Carolina crop is Donte Jackson (95), Chris Westry (94), CJ Henderson (93), Jaycee Horn (92), Madre Harper (91) and Stantley Thomas-Oliver III (90). [EA Sports also included Troy Pride Jr. (92) despite having been waived back in May.]

What did the Panthers’ 2022 draft class take away from their first minicamp experience? And what can we take away from it?
The Carolina Panthers closed up shop on their 2022 installment of rookie minicamp this past weekend. And, let’s face it, it’s just rookie minicamp—so we aren’t getting any groundbreaking developments.
We did, however, get some interesting nuggets from the rookies themselves.
Here are the biggest takeaways from each member of the Panthers’ draft class, from the mouths of the members themselves.
