Cowboys DE Tarell Basham to join Prescott, Kearse, McGovern in missing Week 2, McCarthy confirms

Rookie Sam Williams and veteran Dante Fowler will likely step in for Basham, who went down with a quad injury in the 4th quarter Sunday. | From @ToddBrock24f7

On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones got Biblical in comparing the team’s current injury situation. Invoking the timeless tale of David and Goliath during a radio interview, the franchise’s Chief Eternal Optimist was suddenly casting Dallas as the plucky underdog, perfectly poised to pull off a dramatic upset.

But ahead of an upcoming showdown with an AFC giant, the Cowboys are quickly running out of rocks.

Head coach Mike McCarthy ruled out defensive end Tarell Basham in speaking to reporters, saying a quadriceps injury suffered in Sunday’s game will keep him sidelined- along with three others- for Week 2’s meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The sixth-year man went down on a fourth-quarter play and needed considerable help just to get off the field.

Dallas went into the season opener dangerously thin at wide receiver and offensive line. Now with quarterback Dak Prescott lost for multiple weeks- though just how many is a matter of some debate- and starters Jayron Kearse and Connor McGovern also looking at up to a month off, the Cowboys will be counting on yet another inexperienced rookie to step into the spotlight.

Second-round draft pick Sam Williams played six snaps in his first professional game but failed to log any other stats. McCarthy confirmed, “Definitely, this will be an opportunity for Sam.”

The coach also named veteran Dante Fowler as someone who will get more reps while Basham is on the shelf. The former Jaguar/Ram/Falcon saw 10 defensive plays in his Cowboys debut against Tampa Bay.

The exact nature of Basham’s injury has not been revealed, nor has a timetable for his return.

Prescott may be out 6-8 weeks, headlines miserable night injury-wise for Cowboys

A breakdown of when each of the 4 major Dallas injuries occured, and an update on how long Prescott is expected to be out. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Things went from bad to worse for the Dallas Cowboys last night. Not only did their offense, at least for a week, meet all of the negative expectations from the fan base as they struggled to get anything going in the passing game. They also lost several key players to injury and it looks like it could be for significant amounts of time for all of them.

Dallas suffered injuries to their offensive line first, then their secondary, and then midway through the fourth quarter lost a defensive lineman. On the very next drive the big one occurred with the game out of reach and the team desperately trying to create a rhythm they could build off of heading into next week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Cowboys lost their franchise quarterback, potentially for several months. Here’s a recap of all of the injury news from the club’s 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

6 Cowboys who could be shocking cuts before the 2022 regular season

Sometimes it’s about who’s better. But sometimes there are other factors at play when it comes to the initial 53-man roster. @KDDrummondNFL looks at a few names that would raise an eyebrow if let go.

The Dallas Cowboys may not be as deep as they have been in years past, but that doesn’t mean they will have an easier time when it comes to putting together their 53-man roster. There are still decisions to make for Stephen Jones, Will McClay and head coach Mike McCarthy that include talent, but go beyond who the best player is right now (or in three weeks).

In addition to who offers the best performance, the team will be looking to ensure they don’t say goodbye to potential they want to continue harnessing. Beyond that there is the injury factor for guys the club may look to bring back during the season, and the rules to which those maneuvers can happen. Mixed all together and there could be some interesting decisions made come August 30. Here’s a look at six players who could be on the outside looking in at the initial 53-man roster.

Cowboys to be without two starting defensive linemen against Chargers

The Chargers offensive line could be in position for another strong performance.

The Cowboys will be without two of their starting defensive linemen when they face the Chargers this Sunday.

Dallas was already expected to be without edge defender Randy Gregory, who is currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. But the team suffered another blow after it was confirmed that DeMarcus Lawrence sustained a broken foot and would be out indefinitely.

This adds to the Cowboys’ challenge in matching up against a Chargers offensive line that only allowed five pressures on 52 dropbacks against a Washington defensive front that’s among the league’s best.

Gregory and Lawrence combined for eight of Dallas’ 17 pressures against Tampa Bay last Thursday, which goes to show how important they are.

With Gregory out, Dorance Armstrong will serve as his replacement, while Tarell Basham and Bradlee Anae will be leaned on in place of Lawrence.

Dallas will also be without starting wide receiver Michael Gallup (calf injury) and tackle La’el Collins (suspension).

Dan Quinn talks Parsons, Cowboys’ front 7 through first phase of training camp

Dan Quinn had good things to say about many of the Cowboys defenders in a post training camp media session. We go through the quotes on the linebackers and linemen at the top of the depth chart. | From @AsaHenry_55

From the moment Dan Quinn arrived in Dallas he has been commended by those close to the team for his infectious passion for football and clear plan for fixing one of the league’s worst defenses. The good news for Quinn is that he doesn’t need to get the Cowboys to the top of the defensive ranks, as just getting to league average would be a massive improvement upon 2020.

Quinn has been very hands-on while installing the defensive scheme and teaching new techniques, which has allowed him to get a good gauge of his new players and their progress this offseason. During Friday’s  media session the former Atlanta Falcons’ head coach gave positive reports on numerous defenders who will need to have solid seasons for Dallas to achieve its goals.

Linebacker continued to be a main topic of conversation, which was expected as many viewed the position as Dallas’ most competitive and intriguing entering training camp. The other group that will play a massive role in improving the rush defense, the defensive line, received the second-most attention.

Cowboys may have snagged edge Tarell Basham just in time for his best days

The Cowboys didn’t spend much in free agency, but the Basham signing might have brought in a player ready to realize his full potential. | From @CDPiglet

After a strong showing at Senior Bowl practices, Tarell Basham saw his draft stock bumped up. The Indianapolis Colts drafted him in the third round of the 2017 draft, but he did next to nothing for them. Across 26 games he had only one start, tallying just two sacks, and 15 total tackles. This had some worried, because while Basham had excellent production in college, including ranking in the top five in pressures his final season, his game didn’t appear to transition to the NFL.

Basham relied on strength and motor at Ohio, with his bull rush being a primary component to his pressure arsenal and that is difficult to rely on at the NFL level without development of the other tools necessary.  He did have a positive spin move, but his lack of bend and flexibility were seen as the biggest hurdles he’d need to overcome.

It should’ve been no surprise that he went to a team that asked him to stand up as a 3-4 edge as opposed to come out of his stance. That may identify the plans Dan Quinn has for the new No. 93 in the Dallas defense, as they continue to look for pieces for their hybrid defensive front.

Cowboys 53-man roster prediction is heavy on defense following draft

The Dallas Cowboys will go heavy on defense in this way too early 53-man roster prediction for the 2021 season.

The 2021 NFL draft dust is just settling, rookie free agents are in the process of getting signed and the teams are narrowing down their rosters to 90 players. The Dallas Cowboys did a little house cleaning to their roster when they released veteran players recently, most notably DT Antwaun Woods, to reach the threshold.

Now set within the roster rules with their 90-man arsenal, the Cowboys have less than four months to trim the player down to its initial 53-man team. Here’s a way too early guess at what the 2021 edition of the Cowboys might look like when they break training camp and head into the season.

Whether fans like or not, free agency going according to plan for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are perfectly executing their free agency plans, which have had the same blueprint for at least the past five years.

Free agency is now a few weeks old and the Dallas Cowboys appear to have executed their offseason plans thus far. When the month of March rolled around, they needed to accomplish a few things; sign quarterback Dak Prescott to a long-term deal and improve the defense.

The Cowboys have checked off those boxes.

The first goal was completed when Prescott inked his mega deal. That was the biggest to-do for the team and it was finished before free agency opened. Having to tag Prescott again or exposing him to free agency would have been a nightmare scenario for the Cowboys, so they were wise to finish it before the madness ensued.

Dallas has also been successful in rebuilding the defense thus far, even though it hasn’t been with sexy names.

Followers of the team know the way free agency goes with the franchise, the Cowboys avoid the first wave of free agents when the price is too high to acquire, keep their own valued players and then join the rest of the league in signing outside free agents after a few days when the cost is more manageable.

The Cowboys desperately needed to upgrade their defense this offseason and they set out to do so. It isn’t the star power that many had hoped for, but both the volume and quality of the players Dallas has brought in should help.

With gaping holes on the defensive line, the Cowboys added three players, all on short deals and none are making significant money. None were considered elite players, but collectively, they will add depth to the defense. Carlos Watkins adds versatility and DE Tarell Basham should be a valuable rotational pass rusher.

However, defensive tackle Brent Urban’s signing might benefit the defense the most. While not an elite player, Urban was a major upgrade to the run defense, which finished next to last in the league in stopping the run last season.

Safety was another position where the Cowboys finally addressed with solid additions. Signing a pair of former Atlanta Falcons safeties adds some legitimacy for the defense. Keanu Neal, who will also likely play some linebacker, brings some toughness, while Damontae Kazee finally brings a ballhawk to the secondary. Kazee’s not an elite player, but his 10 interceptions during the 2018 and 2019 seasons would be more than any Cowboys defender’s had in the past eight years combined.

Both players were added for a reasonable price in 2021 as was special teamer and reserve safety Jayron Kearse.

This is what the Cowboys have done in recent years in free agency. Stephen Jones has led the charge of paying their own free agents and spending minimal salary cap dollars on outside free agents. The organization signs middle-of-the-road talent to patch holes so when the draft comes along, the Cowboys aren’t drafting for need.

The team also tends to lean on familiar faces from coaching staff recommendations. Former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli convinced management to bring in players he knew or had coached at previous stops. That is happening again with new defensive Dan Quinn helping to recruit Neal, Kazee, and possibly linebacker K.J. Wright, who the team is currently in a feeling out pattern with.

These are habits the Cowboys have developed in free agency over the past handful of years. They don’t spend on big names, they are patient in adding free agents, identify players they can sign for cheap to fill holes and bring in players they know well.

So far in free agency, nothing has changed with the Cowboys and there’s still good players available. The quality of players brought in this offseason might be better than in years past, but the philosophy remains the same.

The merits of how they go about improving are debatable, but it appears as though Dallas is executing their offseason plan perfectly right now; hopefully it’ll translate into more wins this fall.

Cowboys agree to terms with potential LEO Tarell Basham

Cowboys agree to terms with veteran edge rusher Tarell Basham.

They might not be making a mighty splash, but the club is certainly taking their doggy stroke paddles very seriously in 2021. Needing help on the defensive front, the Cowboys continued their assault on the defensive line on Thursday evening. Dallas continued to add depth, this time to the edge by agreeing to terms with former New York Jet Tarell Basham.

A former third-round pick for the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, Basham has spent the last three seasons with the Jets. After playing defensive end in college, Basham has spent most of his pro career as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

While the singing of the former third-round pick isn’t a huge splash move for the Dallas defense, Basham could be a versatile depth piece for the Cowboys. Being that he could potentially be a strong-side linebacker or defensive end  or even the famed combination between the two, the LEO or REO, in Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme.

The signing could also signal that the Cowboys are potentially ready to move forward without Aldon Smith, who is still a free agent.

Former Jets OLB Tarell Basham signing with Cowboys

Former Jets outside linebacker Tarell Basham is signing a two-year deal with the Cowboys.

Former Jets outside linebacker Tarell Basham found himself a new home Thursday night, signing a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the Cowboys, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Basham came into his own as a situational pass rusher with the Jets, registering 5.5 sacks in three seasons with New York. The 27-year-old is fresh off a 2020 season in which he notched a career-high 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, but did not profile as a fit in Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s new 4-3 base defense.

A former third-round pick of the Colts, Basham joined the Jets midway through 2018, making eight tackles, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits. Basham’s took his game up a notch in his second season with New York, recording 33 tackles, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss and two sacks in 16 games (two starts) lining up on the edge of Gregg Williams’ 3-4 defense.

In four NFL seasons, Basham has made 84 tackles to go along with 23 quarterback hits, nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, seven pass deflections, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.

With Basham off to Dallas, the attention of Joe Douglas’ pursuit of pass rush help now turns elsewhere if it hadn’t already. The Jets already made major strides in addressing the need in the opening days of free agency, inking Carl Lawson to a lucrative three-year, $45 million contract with $30 million in guaranteed money
