Eagles had former Cowboys TE Blake Jarwin in for a tryout

The Philadelphia Eagles are having former Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin in at the NovaCare Complex for a tryout

The Eagles are always looking for depth and with the team preparing for the Saints in Week 17, Field Yates is reporting that former Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin was at the NovaCare Complex for a tryout.

There’s a new report that Jarwin’s flight was delayed and he’ll work out on Wednesday.

Jarwin signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2017 but was released on an injury settlement during the offseason.

Jarwin underwent surgery for a hip injury that is “considered very uncommon” for an active NFL player, as reported in March, and was considered unlikely to be ready for Week 1.

The Cowboys saved a little under $4 million in cap space with the move.

Philadelphia currently has star pass catcher Dallas Goedert on the roster, Jack Stoll, and rookie Grant Calcaterra.

Final 3-round mock draft: Cowboys stick with BPA, add OL help and two weapons

The Cowboys add two dangerous receiving options for QB Dak Prescott and secure the #1 OG on their board. | From @ProfessorO_NFL

The Dallas Cowboys will enter the 2022 NFL draft with a lenghty shopping list, despite their pre-draft talk, after an uneventful free agency that focused on keeping as many players as possible as opposed to signing outside help. The Cowboys found themselves losing starters at defensive end, wide receiver and left guard.   Of those three, the consensus is that guard and wide receiver are the most likely positions the Cowboys could look to address early in the draft.

Dallas has a fairly strong track record of taking the best player available (BPA) in Round 1 but have deviated from that from time to time. Could this be one of those exceptions or will Dallas stick to their drafting playbook?

Dallas’ recent draft history shows there is a fairly large chance they let the draft fall to them and will not trade up, however, that remains a possibility depending on how the rest of the board plays out.  In this mock draft, we will defer to the Cowboys normal draft protocol and will not entertain trading up or down.

Cowboys release K Greg Zuerlein, TE Blake Jarwin ahead of free agency

Just three days away from free agency discussions, the Cowboys have released 5 players to help get themselves under the 2022 cap. | From @CDBurnett7

NFL free agency talks open up on March 14, just three days away, and the Dallas Cowboys are beginning to clear space entering crucial contract discussions. Earlier in the week the team restructured the contracts of QB Dak Prescott and Zack Martin. Although the moves saved Dallas nearly $23 million in cap space, they still had work to do to get under the 2022 salary cap max of $208.2 million by March 16.

While some bigger names have been bandied about for weeks now, the fog surrounding other contributors has now cleared as Dallas has shed some cap, releasing tight end Blake Jarwin and kicker Greg Zuerlein.

For Zuerlein, this moves seems apropos considering the rocky season he had in 2021. In his second year with the Cowboys, he missed 12 kicks, including a few costly ones in games that ended as losses. Three misses in a two-point loss to Tampa Bay in the season opener were the first warning shots and then two more misses in a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Raiders were front and center on national television.

Entering the final season of his Cowboys’ contract, Zuerlein was scheduled to make $2.5 million in base salary and similar to the situation with free agent punter Bryan Anger, Stephen Jones will be looking for a cheaper option.

In the case of Jarwin, it’s an unfortunate situation for the 2017 UDFA. Jarwin broke onto the scene for the Cowboys in the final game of the 2018 season with 119 yards and three touchdown catches in a win. Expectations rose for the Oklahoma State product but the return of Jason Witten from retirement derailed his ascension.

Fast forward to 2020 and Jarwin entered as the sure starter at tight end but tore his ACL in the first game of the season against the Rams and then backup Dalton Schultz usurped his role moving forward. Jarwin may have been ready to resume his role as a starter with Schultz a free agent, but a major hip injury knocked him out for the season and potentially ended his career.

The release of Jarwin saves Dallas an undisclosed amount this offseason as there was an injury settlement. In the final year of his deal, Jarwin was set to make $4.5 million in base salary and had bonuses totaling another $750,000. Looking forward, these departures create space for the Cowboys to make their necessary moves.

Dallas also released three other players, headlined by CB Reggie Robinson, a 2019 fourth-round pick. RB Ito Smith and WR Robert Foster were also let go.

When a player is released from the roster, the savings are offset by other players who are then added to the Top 51 calculation of the salary cap. So while Zurlein was due to make $2.5 million, a new player making $705,000 is now part of the equation, making the savings for moving on from the kicker around $1.8 million. Jarwin’s potential $5.25 million will be lessened by the same amount and the other three players were so close to the minimum, the net savings there are around $600,000.

Blake Jarwin’s hip surgery muddies Cowboys TE situation as league year approaches

The tight end saw his 2021 season derailed by a hip injury. Now a recent surgery on it could put the Cowboys in a bind at the position. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy revealed on Tuesday that quarterback Dak Prescott was one of eight team members to have undergone offseason surgery. Upon being asked who else was on that list, the coach rattled off the names of Michael Gallup, Randy Gregory, Chauncey Golston, Brandon Smith, Darius Thompson, and Donovan Wilson.

That makes only seven.

Tight end Blake Jarwin also went under the knife in late February for a hip injury. While McCarthy downplayed the “clean-up” procedure on Prescott’s non-throwing shoulder and said the rehab won’t interfere with his participation in the team’s offseason program, Jarwin is not so lucky. He is not expected to be ready in time for the start of the 2022 season.

The tight end situation in Dallas just got messier.

Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News tweeted on Thursday that a source has told him that Jarwin’s hip injury “is considered very uncommon for an active NFL player.” So it may be more than just the start of Jarwin’s 2022 season that’s in doubt.

The former Oklahoma State star caught 10 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns over the first seven games of the 2021 regular season before suffering the injury during the Halloween night win over Minnesota. He was placed on injured reserve prior to Week 9 and did not return until the regular-season finale, when he caught one ball for six yards.

Jarwin missed nearly all of the 2020 season with a knee injury; 2021 was to mark his return to prominence. Instead, backup Dalton Schultz saw his role grow exponentially during Jarwin’s absence, presumably leaving the Cowboys roster with two starting-quality tight ends heading into 2022.

But with Schultz entering free agency and expected to command a big payday based on his 2021 performance, conventional wisdom suggested that the team might let him go and simply move the 27-year-old back into his former roster spot. News of Jarwin’s surgery and long recovery time could now force a Plan B.

The Cowboys may find themselves entertaining the notion of using the franchise tag on Schultz within the next week in order to lock him up for another season as they wait for Jarwin’s prognosis to become clearer.

Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports that the procedure performed on Jarwin’s hip has “only been done on hockey and basketball players,” but he notes that the team is “confident” in Jarwin’s ability to rehab.

Sean McKeon is currently the third tight end in Dallas, but has just two years of experience. Jeremy Sprinkle was used more as a blocker and is also set to become a free agent.

The Cowboys have spoken informally at this year’s scouting combine with tight ends Jalen Wydermyer from Texas A&M and Grant Calcaterra from SMU.

Dalton Schultz, and the Cowboys budding 2022 tight end dilemma

The Dallas Cowboys have a number of tough decisions to make in free agency, including what to do at tight end with Dalton Schultz. | From @AsaHenry_55

The more homegrown talent an NFL team develops, the more tough free agency decisions they eventually have make. The Dallas Cowboys are a great example of this, as they have championship aspirations entering the 2022 season, but are currently more than $20 million over the salary cap with two dozen upcoming free agents.

One of those talented players the Cowboys may be in danger of losing to the highest bidder is tight end Dalton Schultz. The former Stanford standout is coming off a career year where he established himself firmly atop the Cowboys depth chart. However, given the remaining tight ends on their roster, along with the other free agents Dallas has to deal with, the Cowboys with have a hard choice to make regarding re-signing Schultz at his market value.

Donovan Wilson expected to join Cowboys vs Eagles, Jarwin possible; Darian Thompson tests positive for COVID

Wilson stayed behind as the team traveled to Philadelphia, but received a negative COVID test and will reportedly join the team for Week 18. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys’ Week 18 contest against Philadelphia may be mostly a formality when it comes to closing out the 2021 campaign so that postseason prep can begin in earnest. But the team continues to tweak the roster, even with less than 12 hours to go in their regular season.

Safety Donovan Wilson, who had been listed as questionable earlier in the week with an illness, has reportedly received negative COVID test results and will be traveling to Philadelphia with an expectation to see some action on the field Saturday night.

The Cowboys secondary has been depleted recently, with safety Jayron Kearse and cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Anthony Brown all hitting the injury report. Brown is in COVID protocol, while Diggs is out with an illness and Kearse is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Rookie defensive backs Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, and Israel Mukuamu are all expected to log significant snaps, although some of that pressure may be taken off with the late arrival of Wilson.

Safety and special teams contributor Darian Thompson has also tested positive for the virus. He did not travel with the team as he awaited his results and will now be added to the practice squad with a COVID designation.

Practice squad safety Tyler Coyle, a highly-touted undrafted free agent rookie from Purdue, will likely be elevated to provide depth for the season-ending game.

On the offensive side, tight end Blake Jarwin is expected to be activated and available to face the Eagles. He suffered a hip injury against Minnesota on Halloween night and has not played since, suffering a bout with COVID while he rehabbed.

His 21-day practice window opened on Tuesday; Cowboys coaches said he looked good in his work this week.

The Cowboys are assured of at least the No. 4 seed in the NFC postseason bracket, even with a loss in Philadelphia. A win, though, coupled with a combination of other teams winning their games, could potentially move them to No. 3 or even No. 2.

Blake Jarwin designated for return from IR, could play for Cowboys in Week 18

The fifth-year tight end contracted COVID while rehabbing a Week 8 hip injury; he could be active as soon as Saturday vs. Philadelphia. | From @ToddBrock24f7

As the Cowboys coaching staff wrestles with which starters to play- and for how long- against Philadelphia in Week 18, there’s suddenly another name to add to the mix.

Tight end Blake Jarwin has been designated to return from injured reserve, the club announced Tuesday. His 21-day practice window begins, and he can be added to the active roster at any time.

While that does not necessarily mean Jarwin, after a two-month absence, will suit up and play in the regular season finale Saturday night, it does bode well for his availability in the postseason.

Jarwin suffered a hip injury on Halloween night in the Cowboys’ 20-16 win over Minnesota and was placed on IR just before the Week 9 game versus Denver.

While still on injured reserve and rehabbing, the 27-year-old contracted COVID-19 and was moved to the virus watchlist the day after Thanksgiving. He came off Reserve/COVID and was moved back to IR on Dec. 7.

On Monday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism that, based on Jarwin’s progress with trainers, the Oklahoma State product would finally be able to make a return to action sooner rather than later.

“We’re hopeful,” McCarthy said in a conference call. “Actually, I thought Blake had an excellent workout Saturday [prior to the team’s Week 17 meeting with Arizona]. We’re hopeful that maybe we’ll get him back on the field this week. He definitely has a chance to potentially be out there. Made a lot of progress here over the last ten days. Really liked his workout Saturday.”

With Jarwin sidelined, Dalton Schultz has contributed heavily as TE1 in the Dallas pass game. During Sunday’s loss, Schultz became just the second tight end in team history to record 70 receptions in a single season. (Jason Witten did it nine times.)

Jarwin, in his fifth NFL season, logged ten catches for 90 yards and two scores in seven games before his injury.

WATCH: Cowboys’ Prescott perfect on second drive, finds Jarwin for TD

Following the Patriots touchdown, Dak Prescott was perfect on the second drive which ended with touchdown to Blake Jarwin.

The Dallas Cowboys had a weird start in Gillette Stadium, after a failed fourth-down conversion and swallowed whistles resulted in a quick three-play touchdown drive for the Patriots.

After the score by Damien Harris, the Dallas offense took no time with a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Quarterback Dak Prescott completed passes to five different receivers on the drive. From the New England 24-yard line, Prescott found tight end Dalton Schultz to set the Cowboys up just a yard from a score.

Kellen Moore drew up a play-action call and the Patriots defense was fooled, setting tight end Blake Jarwin up for an easy touchdown catch.

Prescott was 6-for-6 on the drive for 73 yards and the 1-yard touchdown pass to Jarwin. After the problematic start, Dallas tied it up at 7-7.

Fantasy Football: Potential bargains, must-plays from Giants-Cowboys game

Here’s a look at some potential bargains for daily fantasy from the New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys Week 5 game on Sunday.

The New York Giants (1-3) face the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys (3-1) this Sunday on the road in a potentially high-scoring matchup.

Fantasy football owners and players will have a lot of interest in this one, which will be televised on FOX’s late-afternoon window on Sunday.

Hers’s a quick rundown of the fantasy options in this game.

5 players returning from injury to target in your fantasy football draft

Highlighting 5 players returning from injury to target in your 2021 fantasy football draft.

Impactful injuries are a part of every NFL season, and fantasy football fortunes can often depend on being on the right side of those injuries.

To explain, we all know the feeling and ramifications of losing your stud first-round running back to an ACL tear two games into a season. On the flip side, though, we can often capitalize in drafts on players who are coming off a major injury and have had their average draft position (ADP) fall into value territory. Tread carefully, though, as not all players back from injury return to full glory and are sound fantasy investments.

That said, here are five players returning from 2020 injuries to consider in your fantasy drafts.

Fantasy draft targets back from injury

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com)

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott

2020 injury: Ankle fracture (11 games missed)

Current QB ADP: 7 (51.44 average pick)

Quick thoughts: Prescott got off to a blazing start at a record pace in 2020, throwing for 1,856 yards and accounting for 12 total touchdowns before going down in Week 5.

There has been a shoulder issue that’s kept Dak out of the preseason, but all indicators reportedly suggest he’ll be a “go” for Week 1. Prescott has one of the league’s best array of weapons to work with, and he’s definitely worth a fifth- or sixth-round pick as a potential elite QB1.

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley

2020 injury: ACL tear (14 games missed)

Current RB ADP: 8 (11.53)

Quick thoughts: Barkley has been extremely limited this preseason but is expected to start Week 1. He may be somewhat limited early in the year, but he’s still only 24.

If Barkley is soon approaching his previous workhorse levels (average of 20.8 touches and 20.8 PPR fantasy points per game) from the first 31 games of his career, he’ll be well worth the late first-round pick. Just grab new Giants backup Devontae Booker as a late-round handcuff.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon

2020 injury: Foot injury (10 games missed)

Current RB ADP: 13 (22.45)

Quick thoughts: Mixon didn’t need surgery this offseason, and like Barkley, youth is on his side at age 25. The better fantasy news is that Cincinnati parted ways with longtime complementary back Giovani Bernard, leaving Mixon as the clear RB1.

We’d lean toward drafting an elite wide receiver late in the second round, but if all goes well, Mixon could still easily return first-round value.

Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr.

2020 injury: ACL tear (9 games missed)

Current WR ADP: 26 (70.99)

Quick thoughts: After 25 games missed and only one full season played among his last four, it’s safe to assume OBJ’s top-five fantasy wideout days are over.

However, there are still strong WR3 numbers to be had here if he plays at least three-quarters of the season. Just resist the temptation to overdraft the name.

Dallas Cowboys TE Blake Jarwin

2020 injury: Torn ACL (15 games missed)

Current TE ADP: 24 (167.30)

Quick thoughts: Jarwin entered 2020 as a breakout candidate, but a Week 1 knee injury dashed those hopes. Dalton Schultz emerged with a fantasy TE10 season as his replacement, and the duo figures to share starting tight end duties in 2021. That relegates Jarwin to late-round consideration in deeper or tight-end premium leagues.
