Bengals sign free agent DL Tarell Basham

The Bengals make another move in free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made an addition to the defensive line in free agency with Tarell Basham.

Basham, an Ohio University product and third-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, has been with four different teams since entering the league.

Over six seasons, Basham has 11 sacks and five forced fumbles and projects to join the current Bengals line as a rotational player capable of bolstering the pass-rush.

Still just 29 years old, Basham won’t prevent the Bengals from adding further defensive linemen in the draft. But finding guys who can play the edge and potentially kick inside and provide a rush has been a priority.

Basham, alongside another free agent who signed elsewhere, visited the Bengals last week. His reps confirmed the move on social media:

Bengals host ex-Titans OLB Tarell Basham for a visit

Former Titans OLB Tarell Basham recently had a free-agent visit with the Bengals.

Over the last few seasons, the Tennessee Titans have had some of the worst injury luck in modern NFL history.

On top of leading the league in most players used over the last two years, the Titans’ injury dilemma even got to the point where they set a single-season record by the end of 2021 after they used a whopping total of 91 players.

To make matters even worse, Tennessee almost found a way to break its own record just one year later. As you would imagine, this type of injury luck forced the team to find new bodies practically every single week.

One of those players who got a brief chance to showcase his talents in Tennessee seemingly did enough to at least stay on NFL teams’ radar.

Outside linebacker Tarell Basham recently visited the Bengals in hopes of continuing his NFL career after brief stints with the Titans and Cowboys in 2022.

Basham joined the Titans in December and was immediately forced onto the field due to the injury situation. The Ohio product played in the final five games of the season, totaling five tackles, one tackle for loss, and one quarterback hit.

Titans place Cody Hollister on IR to make room for Tarell Basham

Hollister will miss at least the next four games on injured reserve.

We were waiting for the corresponding move to make room for the signing of Tarell Basham, and now the Tennessee Titans have made it.

The team made the signing of Basham to the 53-man roster official, while also announcing the placement of wide receiver Cody Hollister on injured reserve with a neck injury.

Hollister will miss at least the next four games, but there’s a good chance he won’t play again this season, as the Titans are unlikely to use one of their return designations on him.

The addition of Basham, who the Titans are listing as an outside linebacker rather than a defensive end, gives Tennessee a fourth player at the position on their roster, along with Bud Dupree, Rashad Weaver and Ola Adeniyi.

The Titans were carrying just two for much of the season with Adeniyi sidelined. He returned to action in Week 13, though.

Basham will have an opportunity to work his way into the Titans’ rotation of pass-rushers, which has been short Denico Autry the last two games, leading to terrible results.

Autry’s status remains up in the air, but thankfully the corresponding move for Basham wasn’t Autry going to IR, which gives hope he could be back either this week or next.

Titans sign ex-Cowboys DE Tarell Basham to 53-man roster

The Titans added to their defense on Monday with the signing of DE Tarell Basham.

The Tennessee Titans are adding to their defensive front with the signing of free-agent defensive end, Tarell Basham. The news comes from Basham’s agent.

Tennessee brought Basham in for a free-agent visit last week, and the hope is that this doesn’t mean defensive end Denico Autry, who has missed the last two games with a knee injury, will be out longer.

A former third-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts, Basham has appeared in 77 games (18 starts) over six seasons with three different teams, the Colts, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys.

Basham’s best seasons came in 2020 with the Jets and 2021 with the Cowboys, when he tallied a career-high 3.5 sacks in each campaign.

The Titans haven’t made the signing official yet, and it will require a corresponding move, as Tennessee’s roster is currently at 53 players.

The Titans will return to the practice field on Wednesday to prepare for a Week 14 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Titans host free-agent DE Tarell Basham for visit

The Titans hosted free-agent DE Tarell Basham for a visit on Friday.

The Tennessee Titans hosted free-agent defensive end Tarell Basham for a visit on Friday, according to the league’s transactions wire.

A former third-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts, Basham spent a season-plus in Indy before being waived and claimed by the New York Jets. After two-plus seasons there, Basham was signed by the Dallas Cowboys.

In 2021, Basham tallied 39 tackles (three for loss), 3.5 sacks and 11 QB hits in 17 games (six starts). He appeared in just two games for Dallas in 2022 before being waived, but did not record a stat.

The Titans are set to not have Denico Autry for yet another game after he sat out in Week 12. Hopefully their interest in Basham is just the team doing due diligence on a depth option and not a sign that Autry is set to miss more time.

The Titans will return to the field on Sunday when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Titans had former Cowboys DE Tarell Basham in for a free agent visit

The Tennessee Titans had former Dallas Cowboys DE Tarell Basham in for a free-agent visit ahead of Week 13 matchup vs. the Philadelphia Eagles

The Titans are looking for pass-rushing help, and according to Field Yates, the team hosted defensive end, Tarell Basham, ahead of the team’s Week 13 matchup against the Eagles.

Dallas released Basham on Tuesday.

Basham, a third-round pick of the Colts in 2017, also played three seasons with the Jets before joining the Cowboys in free agency last year.

In 2021, Basham tied his career-high with 3.5 sacks but did not record a sack this season.

The six-year vet played in four games this year, starting the season as a reserve pass-rusher, and playing against the Bucs in Week 1 before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the next seven games.

Cowboys waive defensive end Tarell Basham

The veteran DE played in just two games in his second season with the club, after spending much of the year in IR with a quad injury. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys have thinned their ranks at a position of excellent depth.

Defensive end Tarell Basham is being waived by the club, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Basham saw just 26 defensive snaps in Weeks 1 and 10, his only two game appearances of 2022. He had spent much of the season on injured reserve with a quad injury, returning to the active roster in early November.

Basham’s departure still leaves six outstanding ends on the roster: DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Sam Williams, Dante Fowler, Chauncey Golston, and Carlos Watkins. Micah Parsons sees snaps at the position, and edge rusher Takk McKinley is a recent addition to the practice squad, though both are technically listed as linebackers.

The 28-year-old Basham joined the Cowboys as a free agent in 2021 after stints with the Colts, who drafted him in the third round in 2017, and the Jets, where he played for three seasons.

The former Ohio Bobcat logged 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in his time with Dallas. He led all Cowboys defensive linemen with 627 snaps in 2021.

Cowboys activate DE Tarell Basham from IR, facing gauntlet of top RBs

Out since Week 1 with a quad injury, Basham returns just as the Cowboys defense preps for a murderer’s row of opposing rushing threats. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys are getting back a key piece of their run defense puzzle just in time.

Defensive end Tarell Basham has been activated to the 53-man roster after sitting out the past seven games. He suffered a quad injury in the season-opening loss to Tampa Bay and was at the end of his 21-day practice window that began on Oct. 19.

The former third-round draft pick was a significant run-stopper for Dallas last season. Now he’ll return just as the team prepares to face a gauntlet of top rushing threats, starting with Green Bay’s Aaron Jones. Jones is expected to play this week despite sustaining an ankle injury in Week 9 that forced him to exit the game early; his 5.6 yards per carry is currently 12th-best in the NFL.

Looking ahead, it’s a murderer’s row of opposing rushers. Star running backs Vikings’ Dalvin Cook, the Giants’ Saquon Barkley, and the Colts’ Jonathan Taylor all follow on the Cowboys’ schedule. And after that: Dameon Pierce, Travis Etienne, Miles Sanders, and Derrick Henry. Each is currently in the top ten in rushing yards except for Taylor, and he was last year’s rushing champ.

The Cowboys are allowing an average of 135.1 ground yards per game, ninth-worst in the league.

Head coach Mike McCarthy reinforced the importance of stiffening up against the run in his Wednesday press conference.

“We understand that when people look at our defense, it’s like, ‘Hey, we’ve got to try to run the ball on these guys,'” the coach told reporters. “We know that’s the way people want to come at us. The numbers reflect that if you look at the number of attempts that we have seen- especially late- so we understand it’s a starting point. But we’re also not ignorant and blind to what comes off of those is action throws and an opportunity to try to take some shots on our guys. Our run defense will be critical because it puts us in favorable down-and-distance [situations] to do what we do best, and that’s obviously rushing the passer.”

Basham was on the practice field Wednesday, with his imminent return boding well for the entire Cowboys’ defensive line rotation as they hit the back half of the regular season.

Cowboys activate DE Tarell Basham’s 21-day practice window after Week 1 quad injury

The six-year veteran injured a quad in Week 1. He’ll now look to find his place among a DE group that’s currently leading the NFL sacks. | From @ToddBrock24f7

There is about to be one more able body angling for playing time among the Cowboys’ loaded defensive end group.

Tarell Basham’s 21-day practice window has been activated, as per head coach Mike McCarthy on Wednesday; the 28-year-old could be returned to the active roster at any time over the next three weeks and could even play as early as this Sunday afternoon versus Detroit.

Basham suffered a quad injury on opening night against Tampa Bay. He was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 17, one of two moves the club made in order to sign Cooper Rush and Brett Maher to the full-time roster. (Rookie defensive tackle John Ridgeway was waived with hopes of re-signing him to the practice squad, but Washington snatched him up.)

The Ohio University product, who signed with Dallas last year as a free agent after stints with the Colts and Jets, is on the final year of his two-year contract. He did not log any stats during his 18 defensive snaps in Week 1, but amassed 3.5 sacks- tying his career-best mark- last season.

He’ll now look to rejoin a Cowboys unit that currently leads the NFL with 24 sacks, but Basham may find it hard to get back on the field. DeMarcus Lawrence and a surging Dorance Armstrong are solidly bookending the Dallas defensive line; Dante Fowler and Chauncey Golston have been subbing in nicely, rookie Sam Williams has shown flashes of promise, and linebacker sensation Micah Parsons continues to moonlight quite often at end.

Given the squad’s depth at the position, Basham’s name came up recently in an ESPN story about potential trade candidates. While the network’s Jeremy Fowler wrote that the team was “willing to part” with Basham in order to upgrade at another position, another report claimed that the Cowboys have fielded no calls about the six-year veteran.

55-man Roster: Cowboys waive draft pick, send DE to IR to ready for Bengals tilt

The Cowboys waved goodbye to a draft pick, sent a lineman to IR and shuffled the roster to prepare for the Bengals game. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys made a series of roster moves on Saturday. With injuries stacking up in last week’s 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was assured there were going to be changes made ahead of the next tilt. With the Cincinnati Bengals coming to town for a Sunday afternoon face-off, the Cowboys have decided how they are going to attack things.

That process includes waiving fifth-round rookie, DT John Ridgeway. Predicted to not even make the initial roster after a lackluster preseason showing, Ridgeway was inactive for Week 1 and will now have to clear waivers before making it to the practice squad. The Arkansas product was a fan favorite in the interview circuit, but didn’t impress the coaching staff once the pads came on. The Cowboys have also placed DE Tarell Basham on injured reserve. To fill their spots, QB Cooper Rush and K Brett Maher have been signed to the active roster. In addition, Dallas is elevating QB Will Grier and center/guard Alec Lindstrom from the practice squad.
