K.J. Wright: Communication on defense is Seahawks’ biggest problem

One guy who would know is former Seattle linebacker K.J. Wright.

The Seahawks once again have a below-average defense, despite having plenty of talent at all three levels. If we go by scoring defense, they’re currently giving up 24.2 points per game, which ranks 25th in the league. Going by defensive DVOA they rank 24th.

Their pass rush is inconsistent, they can’t cover any wide receivers who are worth a spit and they’re also one of the worst tackling teams in the league, with only three teams missing more tackle attempts this season going into Week 14. So, what’s going on?

One guy who would know is former Seattle linebacker K.J. Wright. In his show on ESPN earlier this week Wright went in-depth on the team’s communication issues on defense. Among the problems, he says pre-snap communication is almost non-existent. Watch.

Quandre Diggs discusses preparing for season 4 with Seahawks

Check out Diggs sharing some optimism on former Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright’s podcast.

Since joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, free safety Quandre Diggs has not missed a single game. Going into 2023, Seattle’s depth in the defensive backfield cannot be overstated and Diggs will continue to play a huge role in pass defense moving forward.

Last season, the team ranked No. 10 in the NFL in opponent pass completion percentage (62.7%) and also No. 10 in completions allowed (343). Diggs played a large role in that success and has recorded 17 interceptions in 55 games for Seattle. He will be attempting to make his his fourth-straight Pro Bowl team in 2023.

Defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt and defensive passing game coordinator Karl Scott understand that Diggs and the rest of the secondary are the strength of this Seahawks defense. Under their leadership, this unit will be focusing on exceeding expectations and living up to to the hype this upcoming season.

The Seattle Seahawks in their peak Legion of Boom days were the most entertaining and compelling group of athletes in the world. One reason they were so dominant was an unparalleled intensity. Sometimes that high motor resulted in clashes behind the scenes, though.

Earlier this week Cliff Avril was a guest on K.J. Wright’s podcast and he told a story about Earl Thomas snapping on him for eating sunflower seeds during a walkthrough practice. Watch.

Preseason NFL football is an abomination any way you cut it, but at least the Seattle Seahawks are trying to make their TV broadcasts interesting. On Wednesday, the team announced their lineup of broadcasters for this year’s three preseason games. The group includes Kate Scott and Paul Silvi, as well as several former Seattle players, including Michael Robinson, Michael Bennett and newcomer K.J. Wright.

The legendary Scott is the headliner, as she’s the only woman to broadcast games for the NFL, NBA, NHL, college football and the Olympics. Normally she does play-by-play for the Philadelphia 76ers – which she says will continue after the summer detour to Seattle.

The Seahawks are scheduled to host the Vikings on Thursday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. PT, followed by the Cowboys on Saturday, August 19, also at 7:00 p.m. Pacific. Their preseason slate ends with an early game in Green Bay against the Packers on Saturday, August 26 at 10:00 am.

Despite Seattle’s impressive draft, K.J. Wright says Niners are still the best team in NFC West

USA TODAY Sports sits down with former Seahawks defensive player K.J. Wright to discuss the NFC West next season.

Although K.J. Wright spent the majority of his standout career with the Seahawks, he’s not taking them over the Niners this upcoming season.

Wright recently joined USA Today Sports’ Mackenzie Salmon to talk about the NFC West and said supremacy there belongs to San Francisco.

“The 49ers are phenomenal,” said Wright. “These guys play fast, they play physical, they hit you, get the ball. This defense looks phenomenal.”

Still, he thinks his old club, which surprisingly posted a 9-8 record in 2022, is “making strides.”

When asked about the team’s 71-year-old head coach Pete Carroll, Wright smiled and announced that his former coach is “getting up there (in age)” and “his window is closing.”

Still, Wright sees a strong desire in Carroll, but also reiterated that “the clock is ticking.”
