Where the decommits from Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting class ended up

Where did the players go that decommitted from the Oklahoma Sooners 2022 recruiting class?

While the 2022 recruiting class ended up as a top 10 group, it’s hard not to look back and consider what could have been. Though it’s no fault of the current coaching staff, assistant holdovers included, the Oklahoma Sooners had quite a few decommits, even from Lincoln Riley’s tenure as the head coach, that negatively impacted the 2022 class.

Over the last year and a half, the Oklahoma Sooners lost commitments from three five-star players, four four-star players, and one three-star player. They’ve seen them go to current and future conference foes. Notably Texas, TCU, and Oklahoma State nabbed once-Oklahoma Sooners commits. If the Sooners move to the SEC sooner rather than later, they’ll face players that ended up at Missouri and Texas A&M.

While the Oklahoma Sooners are moving forward after rebuilding their 2022 class creating momentum toward National Signing Day, let’s take a look at where former Oklahoma commits ended up after the early signing period.

Where did the top 10 2022 prospects from the State of Oklahoma sign to play their college football?

The Oklahoma Sooners put together a nice recruiting class for the 2022 cycle. They’re in the top 10 in both 247Sports and On3 composite team rankings, with much of their success coming from the state of Oklahoma.

Over the years it’s been a mixed bag for the Sooners in their home state. This year’s class provided the Sooners with four local kids, but over the past 12 recruiting cycles, they’ve averaged just three in-state signees. This year, Oklahoma tied with Oklahoma State for the most in-state prospects signed at four. Before Talyn Shettron flipped his commitment this past Summer to Oklahoma State, the Sooners had half of the top 10 from the state of Oklahoma committed to play in Norman.

Only two of the top 10 2022 prospects in the state of Oklahoma left for opportunities out of state; defensive lineman Chris McClellan (Florida) and Maurion Horn (Texas Tech). Here’s a rundown of how the Sooners have done recruiting Oklahoma by recruiting class since the 2011 cycle.

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners stand with certain players in the 2022 recruiting class?

The Oklahoma Sooners are riding a lot of momentum as the calendar has flipped to November. They are undefeated, ranked in the top eight of every major ranking, and can currently boast a top 10 recruiting class.

While the on-field product has been good and still has the potential to be great this season, great programs don’t just neglect the other part of the team. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college sports. Especially college football despite what Florida head coach Dan Mullen might suggest.

It’s a 365 days a year job and it never stops.

Despite some hiccups, the Sooners are closing in on another top 10 class for the 2022 recruiting cycle. We would seriously be talking about a top 3 class had they not lost a top 10 national recruit in Luther Burden earlier this year. They also lost Jordan Hudson and Talyn Shettron as well.

However, the Sooners picked up the slack in terms of sheer star power and talent by their October run landing two of this senior’s class best talents in Gabriel Brownlow Dindy and Gentry Williams according to the USA Today Sports High School Composite Player Rankings.

With an early signing day of December 15th, the Oklahoma Sooners can put pen to paper and close the deal for good by having many guys sign and send in their National Letters of Intent.

As it currently stands, Oklahoma’s well on its way to locking down their 2022 class as no one currently looks like a surprise flip to somewhere else at the moment with a month to go.

However, there are a few recruits who could still jump on board namely guys like Jovontae Barnes, Hero Kanu, Marvin Jones Jr., Azareyeh Thomas, and Chris McClellan.

Jovontae Barnes, a running back from Las Vegas is set to visit Oklahoma for the Iowa State game. He plans to silently commit and announce his decision at one of the winter All-Star games in January. The Sooners are in an excellent spot here if you’ve followed our coverage over the months.

Hero Kanu, a defensive lineman originally from Germany, but playing football in California, is another huge possibility for the Sooners here. Judging things right now, this seems like it may be down to Oklahoma and Ohio State, which may be a theme for Oklahoma over the next few months on the recruiting trail.

Marvin Jones Jr. plays with 2023 Sooners commit Brandon Inniss. The chance is there for them to play in college as well. Jamar Cain is on the prowl and is positioning Oklahoma to be right in the thick of it over the coming months in a battle with Alabama and Florida State for the highly talented edge rusher.

Azareyeh Thomas popped onto the scene after a visit a few weeks ago and Oklahoma is trending well enough to have garnered multiple crystal ball predictions on 247’s site. Thomas is listed as an athlete but looks to be playing safety if he plays for the Sooners.

Most, if not all of these guys will be names to monitor in the coming months as letters of intent begin to get signed and as players end their high school seasons, allowing them to focus solely on their recruiting journeys as their senior football seasons come to an end.

5-Star, number 1 wide receiver in 2023 commits to the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners landed another big-time prospect to the 2023 recruiting class with the commitment from top wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver group has taken a hit this Summer with Jordan Hudson (SMU) and Talyn Shetron (Oklahoma State) already finding new homes and Luther Burden looking for a new landing spot. While the losses are significant for the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Sooners have had an incredible run with the 2023 class.

They’ve already landed five recruits for 2023 and today got another big-time commitment from 5-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

Inniss chose the Oklahoma Sooners over Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Miami and adds to a 2023 recruiting class that’s already the number one group with a year and a half until national signing day.

Joining a group that already includes Malachi Nelson, Treyaun Webb, Makai Lemon, Luke Hasz, and Joshua Bates, the offensive side of the ball continues to pick up steam for 2023 with the commitment of Inniss.

With the commitment, the Sooners continue to bolster their class for the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Andrew Ivins, a Southeast Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had this to say about Inniss:

Promising build for a young receiver. A two-year contributor at the varsity level that is known for his big-play ability. Understands the importance of setting up and selling routes. Mixes gears well. Attacks the ball in the air and often times becomes a bigger target for quarterbacks than his size would initially suggest. Might lack a true top gear, but plays fast in pads and can get behind a defense. Has run in the 4.6s on the lasers in the 40-yard dash. Fluid when it comes to changing directions. Good in the open field after a catch. Getting better at breaking tackles. Willing blocker, although that’s an area of his game he can also keep improving. The type of prospect that many college coaches have already circled as a priority for them in South Florida. Should develop into a multi-year starter at a Top 25 program level given skillset and athletic profile. Has a chance to eventually play on Sundays. – Ivins

Inniss announced via his Twitter account today that he plans to make his commitment decision known on Aug. 22 on CBS.

Trio of 2022 Sooners commits named to MaxPreps junior All-American team

Three of the four Oklahoma Sooners commits for the 2022 cycle have been named to the junior All-American team by MaxPreps.

The 2021 recruiting cycle will come to a close on Feb. 3 as National Signing Day is almost upon us. The Oklahoma Sooners currently sit with the No. 10 class in the country. On Wednesday, the class will be all wrapped up and the team can focus on the upcoming season. It remains to be seen as to whether or not there will be a spring game this year.

Looking beyond the 2021 recruiting cycle and the 2021 college football season, we have the 2022 recruiting class. The Sooners already have four commitments, with three coming at wide receiver. One of those three, Luther Burden of Cardinal Ritter College Prep in St. Louis, Missouri, was named to the MaxPreps Junior All-American team.

Oklahoma commit was selected on the Class 3A first team by the Missouri Football Coaches Association.

Burden was named along with Ryan Peppins of Thompson (Alabaster, AL) as the two first-team wide receivers. On the defensive side of the ball, fellow Sooners commit Kobie McKinzie of Cooper (Lubbock, TX), was named to the first-team defense at linebacker.

Oklahoma commit was a monster during his junior year and has some of the game’s most impressive tape.

On the second-team offense, MaxPreps listed another Oklahoma commit in wide receiver Talyn Shettron of Edmond-Sante Fe.

Oklahoma commit hauled in 61 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns for the runner-up in 6A-I.

This trio of commits looks to be huge building blocks for the 2022 recruiting class as they get underway in the coming weeks. Lincoln Riley appears to be putting together yet another class of athletes who can get the Sooners over the hump and into the National Championship game.

Minutes after the Sooners’ 33-14 win over TCU, four-star Edmond Santa Fe wide receiver Talyn Shettron commits to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma picked up its second victory of the day as, just minutes after the Sooners’ 33-14 win over TCU, four-star Edmond Santa Fe wide receiver Talyn Shettron committed to Oklahoma.

Rivals ranks Shettron as the No. 2 player in the state of Oklahoma, the No. 6 wide receiver in the country and the No. 52 player in his class. Shettron held offers from Texas, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida State, Auburn and others.

Wideout is already establishing itself as a position of strength in this class. Oklahoma’s 2022 class has four commits, three of them wide receivers. All three are top-20 wide receivers in the nation.

Amassing high-profile offensive talent early has proven successful for Lincoln Riley and his staff of late, and it appears 2022 is no exception.

Shettron joins five-star wide receiver Luther Burden, four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie and four-star wide receiver Jordan Hudson in Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting class. The class ranks fifth in the country.
