VIRGINIA TECH (-145) isn’t a bad bet at home as a moderate favorite, if you just want to declare a winner and not fiddle around with the points.

The Hokies are playing much better football than Syracuse (+120) lately. While ‘Cuse has played the top teams in the league, it has looked awful since a 29-16 win over an equally poor Army team, and the Orange haven’t won inside the league, or even come close, in 3 tries.

Against the spread

VIRGINIA TECH -3 (-110) is a decent play at Lane Stadium in front of the home fans. It is rested, and it has been playing well lately.

Syracuse +3 (-110) has been dinged for 31 or more points in 3 in a row, all losses and non-covers, while managing just 8.0 PPG and allowing 37.4 PPG during the skid. The Orange should fare much better against a more mediocre foe, but the results will be the same, with a loss and non-cover.

Over/Under

UNDER 46.5 (-105) is the lean, but be careful. This could come right down to the end.

We’re certainly not going to have a track meet, as Syracuse can’t get out of its way offensively lately, but the team has been woeful on defense in the past month.

For Virginia Tech, though, Michael Vick isn’t coming through that door. This is an offense which has scored 17 or fewer points in 4 of the past 6 outings. Lean low.

LEAN SYRACUSE +10 (-110).

The Orange struggled against Clemson, but otherwise, they have impressed. They beat Army 29-16, Purdue 35-10 and Western Michigan 48-7. On the road, they are 1-0 ATS.

For North Carolina, it is 1-1 ATS at home but is 0-1 ATS this season as a favorite of 10 or more points. Back SYRACUSE +10 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 59.5 (-110).

Both teams have had solid defensive efforts this season. Syracuse ranks 21st in the nation in opponents yards per play at 4.6 with North Carolina sitting 35th at 5.0. The Orange are 1-4 O/U and have held their opponent to 20 or fewer in 4 of 5 games.

The Orange are unblemished through 4 games this season, but open up their ACC season against their toughest test to date. Only one of Syracuse’s wins is against a Power 5 school, a 35-20 road win at Purdue. What has been the most impressive has been the Orange defense, which is allowing just 14.3 points per game, good for 12th-best in the nation.

The offense has been phenomenal as well, averaging 44 points on 508 yards per game. It’s led by QB Garrett Shrader who leads the Orange not only in passing but rushing as well. He is completing 67 percent of his passes and averaging 7 yards per carry on the ground this season.

It’s hard to imagine that Clemson is already 0-2 in ACC play, but here we are. The Tigers are coming off of a heartbreaking 31-24 overtime loss to No. 4 Florida State. The offense has been good with QB Cade Klubnik at the helm. He led them to 24 points and 429 yards in the loss to Florida, but the Clemson defense was torched for 289 yards through the air by the Seminoles. They’ll have to stiffen up against a Syracuse offense that averages nearly 300 passing yards per game.

Clemson has won 9 of their last 10 meetings with Syracuse, but the Orange covered in 7 of those games. The Tigers won 27-21 win in Death Valley last Oct. 22, but the Orange covered the 14-point spread. Also the under 50.5 hit last year which was the 8th time that’s happened in their last 10. Syracuse has covered 4 straight before pushing last week against Army while Clemson has failed to cover in 4 of their last 5 games.

Clemson is the more talented team on paper, but I don’t believe they should be such a heavy favorite — it would be around -175 if I was setting the line. It would not shock me to see Syracuse win this game outright, but I’m going to look to the spread for this bet.

Against the spread

BET SYRACUSE +6.5 (-110).

All Syracuse does is play tight games against Clemson as 4 of their last 6 matchups have had a margin of victory less than 7. I believe those Clemson teams were better than this current iteration.

I have Clemson winning the game, but Syracuse should keep this tight down to the wire.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 53.5 (-110).

The Under has cashed in 6 of the last 7 meetings and I don’t see this game being much different. While I don’t think Syracuse will hold Clemson under 15 points, which is what they’ve allowed on average this season, it won’t be much over that.

Against the spread

SYRACUSE +11.5 (-115) catching double digits is an absolute gift and one of my favorite bets in a long time. Take advantage.

Syracuse is a reasonable 5-3 ATS across the past 8 games overall, and it has won 3 of its 4 games outright inside the ACC. The road team is also 7-1 ATS in the previous 8 meetings in this series.

Virginia has no business laying double digits to anyone, as it has just 1 cover in the past 9 games overall. UVA is 0-4 ATS in the past 4 instances as a double-digit favorite and 1-5 ATS overall on the season giving up 10 or more points.

Over/Under

OVER 126.5 (-115) is worth a look.

The Over is 6-1 in Syracuse’s last 7 games overall while cashing in 5 in a row against teams with a winning overall record.

The defense-and-running combo of Minnesota figures to lock this one down nearing a 75% probability. That does not make for any profit margin here.

Against the spread

Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 bowl games.

Look for early-down success rates — on both sides — to dictate where this one goes — or, how far it goes toward UM. Teams have found a lot of success staying on schedule running the ball against Syracuse.

However, the 10 points are a lot. Minnesota -10 is worth a partial-unit play, but PASS at the current 10.5-points.

Over/Under

The Under is 7-0 in Minnesota’s last 7 December games.

The Gophers’ defense is masterful at turning red-zone trips into field-goal attempts. UM has allowed TDs on just 40% of red-zone possessions; that ranks 4th in the nation.

The Fighting Illini are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight-up win. This UI bunch is new: Only 3 players returned from last year’s team and none were starters. And their turnover rate is Syracuse’s way to staying within a dozen points, if not to victory. KenPom pegs Illinois’s turnover rate as 306th in the nation.

Look for Syracuse to leverage those miscues, its slower pace, and its unique 2-3 defense in keeping this game within a couple or 3 possessions for much of the way. In their last 5 Quadrant-1 games last season, the Orange logged 1 blowout loss (against Duke) and 4 losses of 12 points or closer.

Peg 3-happy Illinois as being due some regression in its shooting numbers both beyond and in front of the perimeter arc.
