The Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) and Iowa Hawkeyes (6-1, 3-1) meet Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Minnesota vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

I am not a fan of either the Golden Gophers and Hawkeyes, but they battle this weekend for my favorite trophy, Floyd of Rosedale. The bronze trophy in the shape of a pig was 1st awarded to the winner of this annual battle in 1935.

Minnesota leads the all-time series 62-52-2, although Iowa has brought Floyd back to Iowa City in 8 straight seasons, and 10 of the past 11 meetings. The last time the Golden Gophers won in Iowa was Nov. 20, 1999, as the Hawkeyes have defended their home stadium successfully in 10 straight battles.

The Gophers are coming off a 52-10 setback at home against Michigan, and Minnesota is now just 1-5 against the spread (ATS) this season. The Over has cashed in each of the past 3 outings.

The Hawkeyes have racked up 3 straight wins since getting blanked at Penn State on Sept. 23. Iowa won 15-6 at Wisconsin last week as a 9-point underdog, seizing control of the Big Ten’s West Division. Iowa is 2-0-1 ATS in the past 3 games, and 4-1-1 ATS in the previous 6 outings, while cashing the Under in 3 of the past 4 contests.

Iowa is No. 23 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Minnesota at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 20, Minnesota 15

Moneyline

IOWA (-185) is slightly above my personal limit for a moneyline wager, but it’s perfectly acceptable in a rivalry game, especially with a spread of 3 and a hook which I am not a giant fan of. Plus, if you toss this into a multi-team parlay, it is much more appealing.

The Hawkeyes are offensively challenged, but the Golden Gophers are not great defensively, and Iowa should be able to get the offense rolling. And Iowa has won 8 in a row in the series, and 10 of the past 11. The Hawkeyes have owned this series, and they’re the better team this season, too.

Against the spread

IOWA -3.5 (-110) being favored by this little bit of points is rather surprising. And, the Hawkeyes have dominated the series, while going 4-1-1 ATS in the past 6 games overall. The Hawkeyes might be one of my favorite plays of the weekend, even if it is one of my least favorite numbers to bet.

Over/Under

OVER 30.5 (-110) is such a small number. This is the type of total you’d see back in the 1970’s or earlier, not in this day and age of video game football. But Iowa is a throwback, playing a very stingy brand of defense. Iowa allows just 14.9 PPG, while limiting the opposition to 324.4 total yards per game. And the offense is nearly non-existent, posting just 247.4 total yards per outing, while amassing only 116.6 passing yards per game.

Despite Iowa’s poor showing on offense, it should be able to move the ball on a Minnesota team which has allowed 26.7 PPG, and 235.3 passing yards per contest.

Michigan at Minnesota odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan at Minnesota odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Michigan Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and the Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-2, 1-1) meet Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC/Peacock). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan vs. Minnesota odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Wolverines have not only rolled up 5 victories in 5 tries, but all of the victories this season have been by 24 or more points, with the closest game coming in a 31-7 victory over Rutgers on Sept. 23. After opening 0-3 against the spread (ATS) in 3 non-conference games, Michigan is 1-0-1 ATS at most shops in 2 Big Ten battles.

The Over (40) cashed last time out in a 45-7 win at Nebraska last Saturday, its 1st Over in 5 games. The Wolverines defense has been ridiculous so far, yielding 7 or fewer points in each outing, good for an average of just 6.0 points per game (PPG) allowed.

The Golden Gophers have lost 9 of the past 10 meetings in this series since  2006, and Michigan is 42-4 straight up (SU) in the past 46 meetings dating back to 1968. And the Gophers haven’t beaten the Wolverines in the Twin Cities since 1977, as its past 3 wins have been at “The Big House.”

Michigan is No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Michigan -18.5 (-110) | Minnesota +18.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 46 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Michigan at Minnesota picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan 38, Minnesota 7

Moneyline

Michigan (-1400) will cost you 14 times your potential return, and that’s just way too much risk for not enough reward, especially for a conference game.

Despite the mastery of the Wolverines in this series for several decades, you simply cannot risk $100 for every $6.25 won. That’s a ridiculous return, and not a good long-term betting strategy.

PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

MICHIGAN -18.5 (-110) has won all 5 games by 24 or more points this season, while allowing 7 or fewer points. It’s hard to bet against that kind of dominance, especially against a Minnesota +19.5 (-110) team which is just 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS in 3 games against Power 5 conference opponents this season.

The Gophers were on the short end of a 31-13 score at North Carolina on Sept. 16, the only ranked team it has faced to date. Expect a much better Michigan team to bring much more offense and defense into this contest.

Over/Under

UNDER 46 (-110) is the lean in this conference battle, but go very lightly.

The bet on the Under is due to Michigan’s amazing defensive effort, allowing just 6.0 PPG in 5 outings. The danger is Michigan’s offense, which has rolled up 30 or more points in all 5 games, including a 45-point performance in Nebraska last week. It showed it can easily torpedo Under bettors all on its own, even as the defense does its thing.

Minnesota at North Carolina odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Xday’s VFirstNameOnly at HFirstNameOnly odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 18 North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0) welcome the Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-0) to Kenan Memorial Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Minnesota vs. North Carolina odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Tar Heels kicked off their season with a 31-17 win over South Carolina at a neutral site, covering as a 3-point favorite. North Carolina then beat App State 30-34 in overtime, but failed to cover as an 18-point favorite. It is led by QB Drake Maye, who has 477 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs. North Carolina is No. 18 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The Golden Gophers may be 2-0 straight up, but they are 0-2 against the spread (ATS). They beat Nebraska 13-10 to open the season, failing to cover as a 7.5-point favorite. They then beat Eastern Michigan 25-6, also letting down bettors as a 20-point favorite. Starting RB Sean Tyler has been the most productive player for Minnesota, rushing for 134 yards on 27 attempts.

Minnesota at North Carolina picks and predictions

Prediction

North Carolina 24, Minnesota 17

Moneyline

PASS.

A sprinkle on Minnesota here wouldn’t be a bettor’s worst idea, but I would rather play the spread to back the Golden Gophers. While Minnesota hasn’t been overly impressive, the Tar Heels have been worse.

They were just 3-3 at home last season and struggled against both South Carolina and App State. Maye hasn’t looked like a QB who is expected to be a top-5 pick, and there’s no much reason to believe he’ll bounce back. Nonetheless, I’d pass on the moneyline.

Against the spread

LEAN MINNESOTA +7.5 (-110).

Through 2 games, Maye has 2 TDs and 2 picks. App State and South Carolina are solid competition, but he needs to be better. That said, UNC is 1-1 ATS this season and was just 2-4 ATS at home last season. A TD spread is too much credit to a team that arguably should’ve lost in Week 2.

Minnesota has struggled to cover, but it has yet to be an underdog this season and is 2-0 straight up. Tyler should propel the offense, and QB Athan Kaliakmanis, who is starting, has 1 TD and 2 INTs. He’s been good enough to keep this game close.

Back MINNESOTA +7.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 51 (-110).

Simply put, neither offense has looked competent. The Golden Gophers have averaged 19 points per game and are 0-2 O/U this season. North Carolina is 1-1 O/U. It won 40-34 against App State with 17 points coming in overtime, so that game nearly went Under too.

With Maye having yet to show that electric downfield arm, the Tar Heels may struggle offensively. Minnesota has yet to allow more than 10 points in a game this season as well.

Take UNDER 51 (-110).

Nebraska at Minnesota odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Nebraska at Minnesota odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Minnesota Golden Gophers welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis Thursday. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Nebraska vs. Minnesota odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Golden Gophers will start redshirt sophomore QB Athan Kaliakmanis, who played in 11 games last season and ended with 946 yards and 3 TDs. They will have 5 new starters on both sides of the ball. None will be more important than Western Michigan transfer RB Sean Tyler, who totaled 1,000-plus rushing yards in his last 2 seasons with the Broncos. Minnesota was 5-2 at home last season, losing to Purdue and Iowa.

The Cornhuskers will have 4 new starters on both sides of the ball. They finished last season 4-8 and 3-6 in Big Ten action. Nebraska will be starting transfer QB Jeff Sims, who spent 3 seasons with Georgia Tech, throwing for 1,115 yards in 7 games last season. He is a dual-threat weapon. The team will also have to fill the void left by WR Trey Palmer (1,043 receiving yards).

  • Against the spread (ATS): Nebraska +7 (-110) | Minnesota -7 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 43.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Nebraska at Minnesota picks and predictions

Prediction

Minnesota 27, Nebraska 14

Moneyline

PASS.

The Golden Gophers have a more experienced roster and more holdover from what was a solid team last season. At home, they should come out on top, but at (-275), they aren’t worth betting on the moneyline here.

Similarly, Nebraska was 2-2 on the road in Big Ten play and is taking on a side that should be better than it was a year ago. Ultimately, pass here.

Against the spread

BET MINNESOTA -7 (-110).

Minnesota was better last season against the spread (ATS) than Nebraska. It was 7-6 compared to the Cornhuskers 5-7. The Golden Gophers were 5-2 ATS at home as well.

While Kaliakmanis didn’t put up great numbers last season, Sims struggled to make much of an impact with the Yellow Jackets, who were just 5-7 with him leading the way. The addition of Tyler should help Minnesota’s offense find some traction.

Nebraska lost its best offensive weapon, and it will try to cope with that by having the dual-threat Sims and several weapons it had on last season’s team step up. The chemistry may not be there, and it is expected to struggle.

Take the home side. Back MINNESOTA -7 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 43.5 (-115).

Sims ended last season with a 58.5% completion rate. Kaliakmanis had just a 54.1%.

Despite both QBs being solid as rushers, not being able to drive the ball downfield will hurt the total here. Touchdowns will be sparing in this game.

Nebraska was just 4-8 O/U last season while Minnesota was 5-7-1 O/U. Expect sloppy football to start the season and back UNDER 43.5 (-115).

Minnesota is just 5-6-1 ATS against conference opponents and has not covered well recently, failing to cover 3 in a row and losing all 3 games by at least 20 points. It has lost 4 of its last 6 games by 20 or more points.

Iowa is 7-6 ATS against Big Ten foes and is 3-2 ATS over its last 5. It is 2-2 ATS in its last 4 road games as well. Minnesota is just 3-10 ATS at home as well.

Considering the trends, back IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Minnesota at Rutgers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Minnesota at Rutgers odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-13, 1-9 Big Ten) will try to take down the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (14-7, 6-4) in Piscataway Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Minnesota vs. Rutgers odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Minnesota is on a 5-game losing streak since beating Ohio State 70-67 as 14-point underdogs on Jan. 12. This streak has seen a pair of 4-point losses to Michigan and Indiana while also losing by 18 to Illinois and 20 to Northwestern and only scoring 39 points in a loss to Purdue.

Minnesota has been the worst team in the Big Ten the entire season and Rutgers will look to use its 7th-ranked team defense (58.7 points) to hold down a terrible Minnesota offense, which ranks 349th in the nation at 62.2 PPG.

The Golden Gophers rank outside the top 300 in FG percentage, 3-points percentage and free throw percentage. This does not bode well against a Scarlet Knights team whose defense ranks 5th in opponents FG percentage and 27th in opponents 3-point percentage. Rutgers should be able to swallow up the Minnesota offense and hold them to minimal points.

Minnesota at Rutgers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rutgers 65, Minnesota 51

Moneyline

 PASS.

Rutgers -1300 is far too high for a straight wager and Minnesota is not going to win this game so the +675 is not worth a play either.

Against the spread

MINNESOTA +15.5 (-115).

Minnesota is terrible. But it is still not worth risking 15.5 points against.

Even with the Rutgers defense being elite, the offense of Rutgers is not potent enough to risk such a high spread. The Scarlet Knights will keep the pace slow and there will not be enough points scored to allow for this spread to cover. If anything, I would stay away from this number entirely. But if you must make a play on it, the Golden Gophers to cover is the side to wager on.

Over/Under

UNDER 125.5 (-110).

Rutgers’ elite defense will smother the Minnesota offense. The last time Minnesota faced an elite defense in Purdue, it only scored 39 points. It will be similar here as the Gophers will barely make it to 50. This will also allow Rutgers to slow the pace down and not have to score much itself.

In 2 of the Gophers’ last 3 games, the Under hit by an average of 30 points. Minnesota has trouble scoring and it will again in this game. Do not expect points to be free flowing and expect the Under to hit by a good margin.

Purdue at Minnesota odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Purdue at Minnesota odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (17-1, 6-1 Big Ten) take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-9, 1-5) in Minneapolis on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Purdue vs. Minnesota odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Purdue, after a fingernail-biting 64-63 win over Michigan State as 3.5-point favorites in its last contest, will have an easier time Thursday against the last- place Golden Gophers.

Zach Edey and the Boilermakers beat Minnesota 89-70 on Dec. 4 and pushed as 19-point favorites with the Over 131.5 total cashing.

While Purdue is known for its defense, ranking 21stin the nation allowing only 61.2 points, the Minnesota offense is ranked 342nd in the country at only 64.4 PPG.

Purdue at Minnesota picks and predictions

Prediction

Purdue 72, Minnesota 55

Moneyline

Purdue -950 would be the only wager to make. But with the odds so high, I am not willing to risk almost 10 times my money for a straight bet on this game.

Against the spread

PURDUE -13.5 (-105) is the wager to make in this game.

Purdue’s elite defense will hold down a Minnesota team that is 255th in FG percentage at 43.1 and 245th in 3-point percentage at 32.9.

Edey (21.9 PPG) and the Purdue offense will move up and down the floor at The Barn. This game will be double-digits at the half and Purdue will not look back from there.

Over/Under

UNDER 133.5 (-110) is the way I am playing here.

While Purdue can score, the Boilermakers defense will not allow the overmatched Golden Gophers to keep pace.

Minnesota will be lucky to get out of the 50s against Purdue and the Boilermakers will coast to the end by milking the clock and extending the length of its trips down the floor.

Minnesota at Ohio State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Minnesota at Ohio State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-8, 0-4 Big Ten) visit the Ohio State Buckeyes (10-5, 2-2) Thursday at Value City Arena in Columbus. The opening tip will be at 6:30 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Minnesota vs. Ohio State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Minnesota was a 2.5-point underdog when it lost its last game to Nebraska (81-79 in overtime Saturday). After going 0-4-1 against the spread (ATS) from Dec. 8-22, the Gophers have won back-to-back games ATS. UM plays at a slow pace, and its 64.3 points per game rank 14th in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes have lost back-to-back games straight up (SU) and ATS. They were out-rebounded by significant margins in losses to Maryland (80-73 on Sunday) and Purdue (71-69 on Jan. 5). Ohio State has won 3 in a row SU against Minnesota.

Minnesota at Ohio State picks and predictions

Prediction

Ohio State 76, Minnesota 57

Moneyline

The moneyline was OTB at the time of publication.

Against the spread

The Golden Gophers are 2-11-1 ATS in their last 14 games following an ATS win. The favorite is 22-6 ATS in the last 28 meetings between these teams.

Look for that favorite to prevail again in this one. Ohio State has some systemic advantages in how its offense sets up against Minnesota. The Buckeyes take care of the basketball, hit the offensive glass hard and hit 3s while protecting the perimeter at the other end.

OSU beat UM 70-45 in Columbus on Feb. 15. BACK THE BUCKEYES -14.5 (-115) in this meeting.

Over/Under

In a slow-tempo match-up, both sides have had some defensive analytics slip of late. PASS.
