Stephon Gilmore stays brief in explaining his extended absence in Patriots training camp

He said his absence did NOT have to do with his contract.

When Stephon Gilmore missed a few practices during New England Patriots training camp, there was significant curiosity as to why. The defending Defensive Player of the Year award winner, Gilmore addressed his absence, which spanned from Aug. 21 through Aug. 24.

“Had something come up. Personal reason. Told coach about it. I’m going to leave it at that,” Gilmore told reporters on a videoconference call on Wednesday.

He was asked if it had to do with his contract.

“It wasn’t because of that,” Gilmore said.

Bill Belichick is generally open to allowing his players to miss work in order to address personal matters. It seems the coach was open to letting Gilmore resolve whatever issue he had. He then had to pass multiple COVID test before rejoining the team, which helps explain why his absence was so long.

“Everybody goes through things in life and when it’s something serious, you don’t want it on your mind,” Gilmore said. “Sometimes, you’ve got to handle things. So I was able to do that, and I’m back. I’m happy. I’m ready to take on every day and get better.”

N’Keal Harry is among 4 Patriots to return to training camp practice

Big news for N’Keal Harry, who seemed to be falling behind in a position battle.

The New England Patriots saw four players, receiver N’Keal Harry, defensive end Derek Rivers, tackle Yodny Cajuste and cornerback D’Angelo Ross, return to training camp practice for the team’s sixth session on Sunday, according to reporters on the scene.

The Patriots’ absentees were as follows: cornerback Stephon Gilmore and Michael Jackson, running backs James White, J.J. Taylor, Sony Michel (PUP) and Lamar Miller (PUP), tight end Jake Burt, reciever Jeff Thomas, defensive linemen Beau Allen and Tashawn Bower and safety Adrian Phillips.

Harry returns after a three-day absence for undisclosed reasons. He’s in a very competitive position battle for one of the starting receiver spots behind Julian Edelman. Harry will work against Mohamed Sanu, Damiere Byrd, Gunner Olszewski and Jakobi Meyers, among others.

The Patriots’ session on Sunday was the second consecutive practice without pads. They also got the day off on Saturday,

CB Stephon Gilmore absent from practice for personal reasons

The cornerback has missed practice for the past two days.

As the New England Patriots continue their training camp, one notable player has been absent. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore has missed the last two days of practice.

The cornerback has been tending to a personal matter, as reported by the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian. The 2019 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year figures to be a major part of the equation for the Patriots.

With the cornerback position having ample depth heading into 2020, Gilmore is undoubtedly the leader of the position. With New England having the toughest schedule in all of football, Gilmore and the rest of the secondary will be relied upon to perform at a high level.

In what has become a division up for grabs, Gilmore will play a big part defensively, as the Patriots look to stay among the NFL’s elite teams.

Jeff Thomas present and Stephon Gilmore, N’keal Harry absent for Patriots training camp

It’s unclear why Gilmore wasn’t present.

New England Patriots cornerback and defending Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore was absent from practice on Thursday, according to reporters on the scene. The reason for his absence was unclear.

The other absences were as follows: receiver N’Keal Harry, safety Adrian Phillips, running backs Sony Michel (PUP) and Lamar Miller (PUP), tackle Yodny Cajuste, defensive tackle Beau Allen and defensive ends Derek Rivers and Tashawn Bower. Like Gilmore, Phillips and Cajuste are new to the list of players missing from practice.

Undrafted rookie receiver Jeff Thomas made his first appearance at practice in front of the media. As far as reporters have seen, this is his first practice in a Patriots uniform.

New England is commencing their fourth padded practice.

Best of AFC East: Division boasts top talent in secondary

Rankings the secondary units in the AFC East heading into 2020.

NFL defensive coordinators and general managers are catching up with the rest of the league. The NFL is leaning toward a pass-happy contest, and that means defenses have had to find a way to defend against the aerial attack in a multitude of ways. The best way teams have found in combating that is to find defensive backfield talent, and the AFC East reflects that.

The secondary may be the most talented position among any group as a whole within the division. On a few different AFC East teams, the secondary might be the strongest-overall unit… and by a lot.

So who has the best of those squads? Here’s Bills Wire’s rankings of the AFC East’s secondaries:

1. New England Patriots

The Patriots have a stellar group of players in their secondary, as hard as it is to admit. Stephon Gilmore has been at the top of the cornerback charts for the past few seasons. He’s been named an All-Pro in each of the past two seasons and was 2019’s Defensive Player of the Year. He tied for the league lead with six interceptions and led the league with 20 passes defensed. Gilmore was graded as the No. 1 cornerback by Pro Football Focus in 2019.

Opposite Gilmore is Jason McCourty and JC Jackson. Jonathan Jones gives this cornerback spot great depth, but the Pats didn’t even stand pat there recently. The Lions traded cornerback Michael Jackson to New England last weekend, adding further depth pieces at cornerback.

Devin McCourty has been among the top safeties in the league in recent memory. The veteran recorded five interceptions last year. But it’s all perfect for the Pats.

The only knock on the unit is how will they fill in the gap left by Patrick Chung, an 11-year veteran who opted out of this upcoming season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But there’s a few potential options.

The Pats drafted Kyle Duggar in the second-round of the 2020 draft. Duggar is a versatile player who can be a presence at the line of scrimmage. Adrian Phillips, a 2018 All-Pro, will be looked upon to fill the void as well. He missed time last year due to a forearm injury. If he’s completely healthy, Phillips should garner starting snaps for this unit. But even without Chung, this secondary won’t be coming into New England a stroll in the park in 2020… even without Tom Brady.

Stephon Gilmore has awesome reaction to NFL’s Top 100 list

Gilmore took to social media to express his gratitude for being ranked so highly on the list..

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore was the ninth overall player on the NFL’s “Top 100 Players of 2020” list. In a list voted on by his peers, it certainly speaks to how highly they think of him.

Gilmore took to Instagram Wednesday to share his thoughts on being honored. The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is looking to have a stellar season, especially with several key Patriots defensive players opting out.

With the Patriots having the toughest schedule in all of football, Gilmore will certainly have his work cut out for him from beginning to end.

It remains to be seen if he can continue to perform at a high level. One thing is for certain, his peers around the league are expecting nothing less.

Stephon Gilmore revealed who he thinks is the best player in the NFL

This’ll make you laugh. (Hint: it’s a Patriot.)

[jwplayer zUzaq6KZ-ThvAeFxT]

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore is a man of few words. But when he talks — even when he’s brief — his words speak volumes.

So it should come as no surprise that his interview for NFL Network’s Top 100 list, compiled through player voting, produced a fantastic soundbite. During the interview, he was asked who would be No. 1 among the NFL’s best 100 players?

“I would pick myself,” he said with a chuckle in the video below.

Classic.

Gilmore landed at No. 9, the highest for a cornerback this year. Gilmore had a remarkable season, with a particularly remarkable shutdown performance of Amari Cooper, who finished his matchup with the Patriots with zero catches. In fact, Gilmore had more receptions in that game, with one interception on a target for Cooper.

It’s hard to argue that a cornerback — and not a quarterback — is the best player in the NFL, if only because signal-callers carry so much weight in the outcome of the game. But if there was a defensive player who could make the case, it would be Gilmore, the defending defensive player of the year.

6 biggest strengths on the Patriots’ roster ahead of training camp

Here are the six biggest strengths on the Patriots’ roster heading into training camp.

The New England Patriots are heading into an extremely odd year in 2020 — for many reasons.

Tom Brady’s gone, the coronavirus pandemic has caused unprecedented circumstances and that’s just to name a couple of them. New England also lost out on key contributors his offseason with Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, Danny Shelton, Elandon Roberts and of course, Brady.

For all of these reasons, it’s set up for a peculiar training camp and a lower bar for the Patriots this season. Fortunately, Bill Belichick is still the coach and he happened to collect a former NFL MVP at quarterback under the veteran minimum (Cam Newton if you were wondering).

There are many reasons to believe the Patriots can overcome this adversity and put together a winning season. Here are six strengths the Patriots have on their roster ahead of training camp.

Offensive line

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The offensive line will be the most important group for the Patriots in 2020. They’ll be responsible for clearing holes for the team’s running attack, protecting a new quarterback in this system and keeping the pace going offensively in general. Before, a shaky offensive line would get covered up by the genius of Brady. Now, every mistake will be exposed.

Fortunately, the Patriots carry one of the best offensive lines heading into the season. The group features Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason and Marcus Cannon. They have the ability to excel as pass and run-blockers and will be fundamental in the team’s success — health is the only concern.

The Patriots will likely have a run-heavy scheme that relies on great defense and clock management. This season will boil down to the trenches and Belichick is heading into the season with the right pieces in play.

Cornerbacks

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Similar to the offensive line, the Patriots will head into the 2020 season with arguably the best group of cornerbacks. The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore, will head the group. Jason McCourty, J.C. Jackson, Jonathan Jones and Joejaun Williams will be his counterparts.

New England allowed the second-least passing yards last season (2,886) and recorded the most interceptions (25) — with 12 coming from cornerbacks. Gilmore was named a Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro for the second consecutive season and he only allowed one touchdown on the year.

Jackson is entering his third season and is ascending as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, while Jones remains elite as a slot cover guy. The Patriots have one of the best cornerback crews in the NFL and it’ll allow for maximum flexibility for Belichick.

Patriots’ positional preview: Do the Pats have the best CB group in the league?

Taking a look at the Patriots’ cornerbacks as the 2020 regular season grows closer and closer.

In an offseason full of change, the New England Patriots left the cornerback group untouched. The quartet of Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones and J.C Jackson was a serious force during the 2019 campaign and proved to be the team’s strongest position, which should be the same for the 2020 season. While Gilmore and McCourty almost always take on opposing offenses’ outside receivers, Jones and Jackson typically act as nickel and slot corners.

In the first two games of last season, Gilmore, McCourty, Jones, and Jackson were targeted a combined 39 times, allowed 12 catches, broke up nine, and intercepted one, per Jeff Howe of the Athletic. Gilmore finished the year with a league leading six interceptions and 20 deflected passes. He also won the Defensive Player of the Year award, becoming only the fourth defensive back to win it in the past 20 seasons. Jackson had five interceptions and allowed the lowest passing rating of any corner in the league when being targeted with a 37.0 rating. Gilmore ranked fourth with a rating of 47.4, according to Pro Football Focus.

Who starts? Stephon Gilmore, JC Jackson and Jonathan Jones
Who makes the roster? Gilmore, Jackson, Jones, Jason McCourty, Joejuan Williams,
Who’s right on the bubble? N/A
Who’s a long shot? Myles Bryant, Lenzy Pipkins, D’Angelo Ross

McCourty, who turns 33 in August, had trouble staying on the field in 2019, as he missed four games and the lone playoff game against the Titans. However, McCourty executed one the best defensive plays in Super Bowl LIII when he swatted away what would have been a go-ahead touchdown from Rams quarterback Jared Goff to Brandin Cooks late in the third quarter.

Jones is a former undrafted free agent who signed a four-year extension in September last year worth $24 million. He’s become the team’s best nickel corner after beating out Cyrus Jones and Eric Rowe in past years. Nickel corners are typically tasked with covering inside receivers and stopping the run as well.

Last season, the Patriots played man-to-man coverage in 54 percent of all their defensive snaps, per Sports Info Solutions, which led the league, tying the Lions. It marked the third year in a row the Patriots led the league in that category.

“The burden of performing in what is primarily a man-coverage scheme has placed a premium on sound technique, which has allowed all three defenders to perform individually with no help in coverage,” Solomon Wilcots of Pro Football Focus wrote. “Last season, all three players earned a man-coverage grade that ranked in the top 25 among players at the position.”

On top of the core four corners, the team also has four other players that are currently listed on the depth chart. Likely returning to the team is special teams standout Justin Bethel, who is listed as the team’s fifth corner. The 2019 undrafted rookies Myles Bryant, who offered impressive playmaking skills during his time at Washington and D’Angelo Ross are likely candidates for a spot on the practice squad. The same goes for Lenzy Pipkins, who was last with the Browns practice squad in 2018.

The team’s success at the cornerback position last season not only came from the incredible individual play from the players at the position, but also the collaboration from safeties Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon, and Terrence Brooks. While the team didn’t draft any corners in April, they did draft safety Kyle Dugger in the second round, as well as pick up safety Adrian Phillips in free agency after trading Harmon to the Lions. That group is enormously important to help highlight this talented cornerback crop. Because there’s even more talent at the safety position, there’s reason to believe the cornerback play will stay at a high level.

8 AFC East stories from last week for Bills fans to know

AFC East stories from the past week for Buffalo Bills fans to know via the Patriots, Jets and Dolphins.

You’re probably all on top of the latest news surrounding the Buffalo Bills and we hope Bills Wire helped you get there. But let us keep you up to date with the Bills news, just outside the Bills’ realm.

The upcoming 2020 NFL season has many thinking the Bills are the favorite in the AFC East. But Buffalo isn’t just going to stroll into that title. The Dolphins, Jets, and of course the Patriots, will all have something to say about that.

So let’s stay on top of some of the latest headlines surrounding the Bills’ divisional foes now. Here are eight news stories from the other three AFC East teams from the last week right here:

Social media campaign was suggested by Dolphins’ Byron Jones

Byron Jones is a name that Bills fans are going to want to get to know. The cornerback was a big time free agency signing by the Dolphins this offseason, so when you see Stefon Diggs against the Fins in 2020, Jones might not be far behind.

But reportedly Jones already had his affect on the Bills, and the NFL in-large. On Sunday, NFL stars took to social media via their Twitter accounts and flooded the website with the “We Want To Play” campaign. Micah Hyde and Diggs were involved in that.

In doing so, the league’s stars brought attention to some of the big issues on the table against owners. The NFL and NFLPA are running out of time to agree on safety protocols for the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that happened on Sunday, the league and players have started to come together on some issues, such as eliminating the preseason.

So with Jones in mind, maybe we have reason to thank him for playing a part in getting the 2020 NFL season underway because a report says that Jones is the one who came up with the idea.

Finally, something good from South Beach.
