St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (60-60) and Cincinnati Reds (59-61) play the finale of a 3-game set at Great American Ball Park Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Reds lead 5-4

We cashed all 3 bets here Tuesday as RHP Hunter Greene shut down a flailing Cards offense. A meaningless solo homer from 3B Nolan Arenado was the only blemish the Cardinals could attain on Greene, who struck out 9 over 7 IP of 1-run ball. The Cardinals are circling the drain at the worst time, losing 3 in a row and 8 of 12.

The Reds have won 3 straight and outscored opponents 14-5 in the process. OF Spencer Steer is 9-for-19 (.474) with 3 homers and 9 RBIs in his last 6 games. The Reds have won 6 of 10 and have pulled within 4½ games of a Wild Card spot.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Kyle Gibson vs. RHP Emilio Pagan

Gibson (7-4, 3.99 ERA) makes his 23rd start of the season. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 8.2 K/9 in 126 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 6-4 home loss Thursday against Tampa Bay Rays
  • Three career starts vs. Reds: 2-0, 5.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 22 K in 16 2/3 IP
  • May 28 at GABP: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K in 7-1 victory

Pagan (2-3, 4.22 ERA) makes his 1st start and 24th appearance. He has a 1.36 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 11.0 K/9 in 21 1/3 innings.

  • Last outing: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K (16 pitches) in relief appearance of 4-3 victory Sunday at Milwaukee Brewers
  • Career vs. Cardinals (regular season): 0-1, 11.25 ERA (4 IP, 5 ER), 1.25 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 4 relief appearances

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Reds 4

Moneyline

The Reds are going with a bullpen game, and this take is more about a team can’t be this bad, rather than confidence they’ll figure it out. The Cardinals should not have lost both of these games and looked so pathetic in the process. They should not get swept in a bullpen game. Gibson pitched well in this ballpark earlier this season, and he stops the skid. Take the CARDINALS -115.

Run line/Against the spread

I don’t trust the Cards on the RL, but I do like Gibson’s outlook here. He has 6+ K’s in 3 of 4 starts and fanned 6 Reds in May.

Take KYLE GIBSON OVER 4.5 K’S (-145).

Over/Under

The forecast is pretty much the same as it has been in the series. It’s slated to be 86 degrees with a 6-mph breeze blowing left to right. All 5 games in GABP this season have gone Under. There really hasn’t been any danger or a sweat, either. And with the total at 9.5, I’m good continuing the trend.

Take the UNDER 9.5 (-120).

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (60-59) and Cincinnati Reds (58-61) play the 2nd game of a 3-game set at Great American Ball Park Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Tied 4-4

The Cards got worked 6-1 Monday, falling to 8-12 over their last 20 games. They took a 1-0 lead early and had 2 instances with the bases loaded and could not cash in. That is the recurring theme with this team. 101 ESPN radio in St. Louis  referenced Tuesday morning that the Cardinals are 11-for-79 (.139) with runners in scoring position and 2-for-17 (.118) with the bases loaded in the month of August.

The Reds received 2 homers from 2B Spencer Steer (2-for-3, 5 RBIs), while SS Elly De La Cruz connected for his 21st homer of the year. The win brought the Reds within 4½ games of a Wild Card spot. They’re 6-4 over their last 10 games and 11-9 over the last 20.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Erick Fedde vs. RHP Hunter Greene

Fedde (8-5, 3.28 ERA) makes his 24th start of the season, pitching for the Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox — he was acquired by St. Louis July 29. He has a 1.15 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 8.1 K/9 in 131 2/3 innings between the 2 clubs.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K in 5-2 home victory vs. Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday
  • Career vs. Reds: 1-0, 6.05 ERA (19 1/3 IP, 13 ER), 1.86 WHIP, 10 BB, 9 K in 4 starts; last faced them in 2022
  • Career at Great American Ball Park: 0-0, 7.43 ERA (13 1/3 IP, 11 ER), 2.10 WHIP, 8 BB, 5 K in 3 starts

Greene (8-4, 2.90 ERA) makes his 24th start. He has a 1.03 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 10.2 K/9 in 136 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 K in 10-4 victory in 10 innings at Miami Marlins Thursday
  • Tied with Washington Nationals LHP Mackenzie Gore for most walks in NL (52)
  • Leads majors with 19 hit batters
  • Last 5 starts vs. Cardinals: 1-2, 2.67 ERA (27 IP, 8 ER), 1.22 WHIP, 41 K in 27 IP; 1-4, 3.57 ERA in 8 career starts vs. Cards

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Cardinals +1.5 (-200) | Reds -1.5 (+165)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 8.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Reds 5, Cardinals 3

Moneyline

Greene has allowed 5 earned runs in his last 7 starts for a crisp 1.03 ERA. I look for him to dominate the Cards’ dormant bats. BET REDS (-135) in this one because of the young right-hander.

Run line/Against the spread

The winning team has cashed multi-run wins in 7 of the last 8 meetings between the clubs. Of the Reds’ 6 wins in their last 10 games, 5 of them were by multiple runs.

Divvy up 1½ UNITS between the Reds (-135) moneyline and the REDS -1.5 (+165) run line.

Over/Under

We have pretty similar weather conditions Tuesday that we did Monday, when the Under (8.5) cashed with the 6-1 final. The forecast calls for 84 degrees with a light 3-mph breeze blowing out to right-center. All 4 games in GABP between these clubs this season have gone Under.

I like UNDER 8.5 (+100) Tuesday night.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (60-58) take on the Cincinnati Reds (57-61) Monday in the opener of a 3-game set at Great American Ball Park at 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cardinals lead 4-3

The Cards had a rare Sunday off after splitting a 2-game series at Kansas City. St. Louis lost 8-3 Saturday as a +103 underdog. 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.232, 18 HR, 47 RBIs) is finally showing signs of life in what has been an unimpressive year (.232, 18 HR, 47 RBIs). He’s hitting .277 with 3 homers, 7 RBIs and an .869 OPS in the last 13 games — his OPS for the season is a putrid .686. The Cards need his production as they sit 1½ games out of a Wild Card spot and have a brutal schedule upcoming.

The Reds had a 4-3 road trip and avoided a 3-game sweep in Milwaukee Sunday with a 4-3 victory as +114 underdogs. C Tyler Stephenson is ablaze, hitting .333 with 4 homers and 9 RBIs in his last 8 games. The Reds are 4½ out of a playoff spot, and this will be a pivotal series if they intend to contend.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Sonny Gray vs. LHP Andrew Abbott

Gray (11-6, 3.65 ERA) makes his 22nd start. He has a 1.07 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9 and 11.0 K/9 in 125 2/3 innings. The veteran pitched for the Reds 2019-21, posting a 23-20 record with a 3.49 ERA in 68 starts. He was an All-Star in 2019.

  • Last start: Win, 7 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 4-3 home victory vs. Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday
  • 2024 vs. Reds: 1 home start, loss, 4 1/3 IP, 3 ER (6 R), 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 9-4 setback June 29; faced Reds only 1 other time as member of Oakland A’s in 2016 (2-1 loss, 7 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K)
  • Career at Great American Ball Park: 15-10, 3.66 ERA (194 1/3 IP, 79 ER), 1.12 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 37 starts (1 as a visitor in 2016)

Abbott (9-9, 3.70 ERA) makes his 24th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 7.4 K/9 in 126 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 6 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 K in 6-4 setback at Miami Marlins Wednesday
  • Last 5 starts: 0-3, 6.56 ERA, 1.93 WHIP (23 1/3 IP, 17 ER), 8 HR, 22 K
  • 2024 vs. Cardinals: 1-1, 6.55 ERA (11 IP, 8 ER), 9 H, 3 HR, 8 BB, 5 K in 2 starts
  • Career vs. Cardinals: 2-2, 6.10 ERA (20 2/3 IP, 14 ER), 1.55 WHIP, 5.2 K/9 in 4 starts

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 4, Reds 3

Moneyline

The Reds are meh at home at 28-31 and just 15-17 against the NL Central. Gray hit a bad stretch in June and July (3-4, 4.83 ERA in 10 starts) but has been really good since the calendar turned to August (1-0, 2.57 ERA in 2 starts). He has gone 7 innings in both August outings, allowing 2 runs in each and combined for 15 K’s.

He’ll limit the damage needed for the Cards’ suspect offense to prevail. TAKE CARDINALS (-135).

Run line/Against the spread

I don’t like either side of the RL here, but there is a prop that stands out. SONNY GRAY UNDER 1.5 WALKS (+105) at plus-money is a good play. He’s allowed 1 walk or fewer in 7 of his last 8 starts.

Over/Under

It’s slated to be 80 degrees with a light 5-mph breeze blowing out to right-center. All 3 games in GABP between these clubs this season went Under with 5-3, 7-1 and 3-1 finals. I like UNDER 8.5 (-115) Monday night.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (63-79) and Cincinnati Reds (73-71) wrap up a 3-game series at Great American Ball Park Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:40 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cardinals lead 5-4

The Cardinals have won 4 of their 5 games on a current 9-game road trip. Their 4-3 win on Saturday was their 7th win in their last 10 games scoring 6.4 runs on average. St. Louis is 32-39 away from Busch Stadium.

Cincinnati will try to finish their 10-game homestand at .500 with a win on Sunday over the Cardinals. They have lost 3 straight and have been outscored 21-11 during this slump. The Reds are 35-39 at Great American Ball Park.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Miles Mikolas vs. RHP Hunter Greene

Mikolas (7-10, 4.63 ERA) makes his 31st start. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9 and 6 K/9 in 171 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K in 10-6 win at the Atlanta Braves Tuesday
  • 2023 vs. Reds: 1-1, 3.46 ERA (13 IP, 5 ER), 0 HR, 2 BB, 7 K in 2 starts
  • 2023 road stats: 5-5, 4.00 ERA (90 IP, 40 ER), .281 OBA in 15 starts

Greene (3-6, 4.75 ERA) will make his 18th start. He has a 1.48 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 12 K/9 in 85 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 4-1 win at the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 30
  • Last start vs. Cardinals: No-decision, 5 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 9 K in 4-3 road victory on June 11
  • 2023 home stats: 0-4, 7.24 ERA (27 1/3 IP, 22 ER), .302 opponent batting average (OBA) in 6 starts

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Cardinals -1.5 (+150) | Reds +1.5 (-185)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 10 (O: -105 | U: -115)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 5

Moneyline

BET CARDINALS (-105).

The Reds are in a bit of a tailspin and Greene does not seem like the guy to get them out of it. He has yet to win a game at home this season and has an ERA over 7 at Great American Ball Park.

St. Louis is firing on all cylinders right now scoring over 6 runs per game over their last 10. I’m going to ride the hot hand.

Run line/Against the spread

AVOID.

I am not going to touch the run line. I don’t have enough confidence in the Cardinals to cover the line and the -185 is not an enticing proposition.

Over/Under

PASS.

My lean is the Over, but I am not confident enough to take this bet. In their 9 meetings this season, these teams have gone Over this total in 6 of them.

When you look at this pitching match up, Green has allowed 5 or more ER in 2 of his last 3 starts while Mikolas has allowed at least 3 ER in his last 5 starts.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (62-79) and Cincinnati Reds (73-70) meet Saturday for the 2nd game of a 3-game series. First pitch from Great American Ball Park is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: tied 4-4

St. Louis won 9-4 at a +110 road underdog in Friday’s series opener. The Cardinals led 6-0 by the middle of the 3rd inning and from there it was simply about maintaining the lead. The Reds rallied back to within 2 runs, trailing 6-4 through 4 frames, but the Cards scored 3 runs through the 7th and 8th to put the game away.

The Cardinals are 6-4 in their last 10 and 31-39 on the road. Cincinnati is 5-5 in its last 10 games and 35-38 at home.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

LHP Zack Thompson vs. RHP Carson Spiers

Thompson (4-5, 3.91 ERA) makes his 6th start and 22nd appearance. He has a 1.46 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 10.4 K/9 through 46 IP.

  • Last outing: Win, 7 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 6 K in a 6-4 home win Sunday vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Career vs. Cincinnati: 0-0, 0.00 ERA (5 IP, 0 ER), 0 H, 3 BB, 5 K across 4 relief appearances

Spiers (0-0, 6.75 ERA) makes his 2nd career start.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 4 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 K in 15-7 home loss Sunday vs. Chicago Cubs

  • Over/Under (O/U): 10.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 5

Moneyline

LEAN CARDINALS (-132).

The Cardinals are the slightly hotter team but these 2 squads have been very evenly matched this season. I am taking the Cardinals as they are 3-0 in Thompson’s last 3 starts while Spiers is still an unproven rookie. These teams have split their last 10 meetings and that small pitching advantage could be pivotal here.

Run line/Against the spread

BET REDS +1.5 (-142).

The Reds are a better team than the Cardinals, as their record shows, and I expect them to be able to cover here as slight home ‘dogs. The Reds haven’t been great at home but the Cardinals have been even worse on the road, and I believe at the very least that will be enough for the Reds to keep it close.

Over/Under

BET OVER 10.5 (-110).

The Over is 6-2 in 8 Cardinals-Reds meetings this season.

The Over is 6-0 in St. Louis’ last 6 games and 7-2-1 in its last 10 outings.

The Over has hit in 4 of Cincinnati’s last 5 games.

The Over is also 3-0 in Thompson’s last 3 starts and hit in Spiers’ only start.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The St. Louis Cardinals (61-79) open a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds (73-69), who are in the middle of a heated Wild Card race. First pitch Friday is set for 6:40 p.m. ET at Great American Ballpark. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Reds lead 4-3

The last place Cardinals won the 1st 2 games against the Atlanta Braves on their current 9-game road trip, but they lost 8-5 on Thursday night.

After dropping 6 of 8 games, the Reds have started to get back on track with wins in 4 of their last 6 contests.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

LHP Drew Rom vs. LHP Andrew Abbott

Rom (0-2, 7.24 ERA) makes his 4th start. He has a 1.90 WHIP, 5.3 BB/9 and 7.2 K/9 in 13 2/3 innings.

  • Went 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA, 4.6 BB/9, and 10.9 K/9 in 21 outings (20 starts) in Triple A. In 2 starts with the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate following his trade from Baltimore, he allowed 1 ER with 4 BB and 18 K
  • Last start: No-decision, 4 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 1 K in 7-6 loss to Pittsburgh

Abbott (8-4, 3.22 ERA) makes his 18th start. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 9.9 K/9 in 95 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K in 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
  • Home stats: 3-2, 2.66 ERA (50 2/3 IP, 15 ER) with 8.9 K/9 in 8 starts. He has allowed 8 HR in those games (1.4 HR/9) but has been helped greatly by a .198 BABIP
  • Faced the Cardinals in June and shut them out for 5 2/3 IP, though it came with 3 BB and 4 K

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Cardinals +1.5 (-185) | Reds -1.5 (+150)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 10.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Reds 7, Cardinals 5

Moneyline

Rom has really struggled with walks this season, which has led to an inflated ERA both at Triple-A and in his small MLB sample. He is sporting a weak 11/8 K/BB with the Cardinals so far, and in this game, he’ll be pitching in a hitter-friendly park against a team with a lot on the line. This is a solid price on the home team so jump on the REDS (-120).

Run line/Against the spread

Abbott has a shiny ERA at home, but his skills haven’t quite supported the excellent results. His offense should give him plenty of support, but the Cardinals have been hitting well lately and should keep it fairly close. We’ll side with the moneyline and PASS on this line.

Over/Under

The Cincinnati bats are lined up for a good day against a young pitcher who has yet to establish himself at the big-league level, and who gets himself into a lot of trouble with shaky control. On the other side, Abbott hasn’t been as good as his ERA would suggest.

The Cardinals have had a very disappointing season, but the offense has come to life lately, as they have scored 38 runs in their last 5 games (7.6 runs per game). When all is said and done, this game should end up real close to the total, but a small play on OVER 10.5 (-110) is the call here.

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 5

Moneyline

AVOID.

The Cardinals are just 11-13 on the road while the Reds are 13-13 at home this season. Their bullpen has performed better than expected, and it should get a good amount of action on Wednesday. The Reds are more worthy of a spread play given the value.

Run line/Against the spread

BET REDS +1.5 (-115).

The Reds are a strong 26-22 ATS this season, and they have covered in 2 of their 3 games in which Lively has started on the mound.

The Cardinals are starting a pitcher who hasn’t performed well this season, and they are just 23-27 ATS on the year. Ultimately, given the season-long trends, back the REDS +1.5 (-115).

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 10 (-115).

Both teams have consistently covered the Over. Both games in this series have hit double figures as well.

St. Louis is 27-22-1 O/U this season, and it has gone Over in 4 straight games. Cincinnati is 26-22 O/U on the season and 4-2 O/U in its last 6 games. Take the OVER 10 (-115).

LHP Jose Quintana vs. LHP Mike Minor

Quintana (4-6, 3.45 ERA) has made 25 starts in 2022. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 7.6 K/9 in 127 2/3 IP.

  • Owns a 2.17 ERA in his last 7 starts
  • Tossed 5 shutout innings against the Reds on May 15

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 4

Money line

The betting signals here cross back and forth around a Cardinals -225 equilibrium. That spells no value on these prices: AVOID.

Run line/Against the spread

Same calculus on the run-line side of things, at both 1.5 and 2.5 runs.

St. Louis owns a .371 batting average on balls in play with runners in scoring position over the last month. Figure on some fade lean away from the Redbirds in the near future, but this pitching matchup and Cincy’s offensive struggles lately make for too much uncertainty.

STEER CLEAR.

Over/Under

BACK THE OVER 9.5 (-105).

There is some slight lean against Quintana and in favor of a Redbirds offense that hits left-handers hard. Mix in a forecast for a batter’s breeze in a ballpark that is batter-friendly to begin with.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The St. Louis Cardinals (75-54) and Cincinnati Reds (50-77) continue a 3-game NL Central series Tuesday. First pitch from Great American Ball Park is 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: St. Louis took Monday’s series opener 13-4 and leads the season series 8-4

The Cardinals banged out 4 home runs among their 13 hits Monday. St. Louis has registered multiple round-trippers in 3 straight games and has recorded 31 HR over its last 16 games. The Redbirds own a .922 OPS and have scored 6.75 runs per game over that span.

The Reds own a 26-37 mark at home but have gone on some solid runs there. They are not on one of those runs now. Cincy is just 2-5 over its last 7 games at Great American and has played .300 ball overall since Aug. 8 (6-14).

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Dakota Hudson vs. RHP Justin Dunn

Hudson (7-6, 4.23 ERA) is tabbed for his 24th start of the season. He has a 1.39 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 5.2 K/9 through 121 1/3 IP.

  • Has faced the Reds twice this season, posting one solid start and one disaster. The clunker (6 runs on 9 hits over 7 IP) was the most recent effort (June 12).
  • Owns a 5.05 ERA and 1.53 WHIP on the road this season.

Dunn (1-2, 5.12 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 1.50 WHIP, 4.7 BB/9 and 7.0 K/9 through 19 1/3 IP.

  • Made his Reds debut on Aug. 8 after he missed the front half of the season while recovering from a shoulder injury.
  • Logged a 6.92 ERA in Triple-A before his call-up.
  • Owns a 4.13 ERA over 29 career games (all starts).

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 4

Money line

The Cards were a decent betting play heading into the back half of August, and they have paid off. St. Louis is 12-3 since Aug. 16. That value may now be leveling off.

However, the Cardinals are the closest thing to value on this particular Money Line play. Hudson may a bit too far out over his skis with his surface ERA, but he is backed by a solid enough bullpen and one that is well enough rested at the back end.

Consider a line watch: St. Louis (-205) would be a decent play. Otherwise, PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

Check the ALTERNATE RUN LINE ST. LOUIS -1.5 (-135) as a more workable play than the -2.5 action.

Over/Under

Another LINE WATCH here: on a warm, breeze-blowing-out evening in Cincinnati, grab the OVER 9.5 for a partial-unit play if the price drops to -120, and consider full-unit plays at -115 or better.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The St. Louis Cardinals (74-54) battle the Cincinnati Reds (50-76) Monday in the 1st game of a 3-game set at Great American Ball Park. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Cardinals vs. Reds odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Cardinals lead 7-4

The Cardinals pulled one out late Sunday night with a 3-run home run by OF Tyler O’Neill to give them a 6-3 win and a series win over the Atlanta Braves. The Cards have remained hot, going 7-3, 14-6 and 23-7 over their last 10, 20 and 30 games, respectively. However, they’ve had trouble with Cincinnati and are just 3-3 at GABP this season — and the Reds were 10-9 against the Cards last season.

The Reds come into this one 4-6 over their last 10 contests, and those 4 wins came against the last-place Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. They’re just 7-13 over the last 20 games. They are slightly better at home with a 26-36 mark. It’ll be a challenge Monday as the team signed its starter — RHP Chase Anderson — just a few days ago.

Cardinals at Reds projected starters

RHP Miles Mikolas vs. RHP Chase Anderson

Mikolas (10-10, 3.35 ERA) makes his 27th start. He has a 1.02 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9 and 6.6 K/9 in 164 IP.

  • Was touched for 6 ER on 7 H and 2 BB with 4 K in 5 IP at GABP July 24.
  • Has a 5.40 ERA over 5 August starts;  fatigue might be setting in after throwing just 44 2/3 big league innings the last 2 years combined.

Anderson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first appearance in the majors this season.

  • Was 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9 and 6.6 K/9 in 9 starts and 5 bullpen appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies last year.
  • Spent the last month as a reliever in Triple-A and threw a combined 10 pitches in his last 2 appearances, so he’s not built up to pitch deep into a game.

Cardinals at Reds picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Reds 3

Money line

The Cards are heavy favorites, as they should be, but the Reds have given them fits. Mikolas is showing signs of fatigue and has a 6.58 ERA in 5 career starts in Cincinnati.

The Cards are going to score runs, though. They’ve plated 5 in 3 of the 6 games at GABP. It’s chalky but seems pretty probable to cash if you take CARDINALS OVER 4.5 TOTAL RUNS (-175).

Run line/Against the spread

The Reds are 26-36 straight up and 28-34 on the RL at home. That doesn’t give me much confidence that they can stay within a couple of runs. On the flip side, I’m not paying -135 for the Cards to win by 2 with a pitcher that is fading and has a bad history at this park. PASS on the RL.

However, I would take a chance on MIKOLAS UNDER 4.5 K’S (-114). It’s dicey because he’s capable of fanning 5 in every start. However, he has only done it 2 times in the last 7 outings and he hasn’t struck out 5 Reds over a span of 4 starts dating to 2019.

Over/Under

The wind is blowing toward the left-field foul pole at 11 mph, which shouldn’t affect much positively. Scoring 10 runs is definitely possible with a pitcher who struggles and a possible bullpen game for Cincinnati.

However, it has only happened once in 6 games at GABP between the teams this year. LEAN UNDER 9.5 (-122) or hope for a scoreless 1st inning for a better live bet.
