Notre Dame will face Auburn in first round of Legends Classic

Make your travel plans to New York.

When we wrote about Notre Dame releasing its 2023-24 nonconference schedule, we briefly mentioned the Legends Classic. We knew that the Irish would take part in this annual event, which they won in 2016, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, we didn’t know when the matchups for the event would be announced. It turns out we had to wait all of 24 hours.

The Irish have drawn Auburn as their first-round opponent in the Legends Classic. The other game will feature Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure. However the first round plays out will determine who plays who in either the third-place game or the championship game.

The Tigers are a first-time opponent for the Irish and so would the Cowboys if they have the opportunity to play them. The Irish have won five of eight meetings with the Bonnies but lost to them last year in the Gotham Classic, which was held not far away in Long Island.

The Irish surely will be underdogs in at least the first game. In fact, they’ll be underdogs in almost every game this season. Hopefully, they take that as an opportunity to prove everyone wrong. It’s all they can do.

Notre Dame’s first three nonconference dates revealed

Mark your calendars for November.

Notre Dame’s 2022-23 schedule is starting to take shape. The dates and opponents for the Irish’s first three games, all of which are part of the Gotham Classic, have been announced. The season begins Nov. 16 at Purcell Pavilion against Southern Indiana, which is making its Division I debut as part of the Ohio Valley. That will be followed with a home game Nov. 22 against Bowling Green, an opponent the Irish have not faced since a 92-65 Valentine’s Day victory in 1972.

The third game, which is being promoted as the showcase game in the Gotham Classic, is Nov. 25, when the Irish will take on St. Bonaventure at UBS Arena, where the New York Islanders play. This matchup has been known since March, but we finally know when it will take place. This will be the Irish’s first game against the Bonnies since a 57-54 win three days before Christmas in 1994.

Here’s to a strong start to what should be another great season.

Notre Dame to play St. Bonaventure in 2022 Gotham Classic

Did you expect this opponent?

Notre Dame knows at least one of its nonconference opponents for the 2022-23 season, and it’s not one that was on anyone’s radar. That opponent is St. Bonaventure, which the Irish will play in the 2022 Gotham Classic at UBS Arena, the new home of the New York Islanders. It will be the Bonnies’ second straight season playing a prominent ACC program at a neutral site. This season, they lost to Virginia Tech in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Irish are 5-2 all-time against the Bonnies, but the teams have not faced each other since a few days before Christmas in 1994, which the Irish won, 57-54. That marked the third straight season in which the teams met, and it snapped a two-game losing streak for the Irish in the series. Before that, the Irish had won all four previous meetings.

The Bonnies have a 20-8 overall record this season and have a double bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.
