2023 Season Preview: Could 2023 be the last Bedlam matchup?

What is Oklahoma State bringing back for what could be the last Bedlam matchup for the foreseeable future?

In our next opponent preview, we take a look at the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Cowboys are coming off a 7-6 season and are replacing a ton of talent, especially defensively.

The Cowboys have 57% of their production returning from a year ago, which ranks 89th per ESPN’ returning production metric (ESPN+).

They return 65% of their offense which ranks 66th in the nation, and 50% of their defense, which ranks 101st.

The big loss offensively is quarterback [autotag]Spencer Sanders[/autotag]. When healthy, he was their offense last year. He threw for 2,642 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for 391 yards and eight touchdowns.

It’s no secret that when he wasn’t 100%, the offense struggled mightily and ultimately, the team suffered. They will look to replace him with transfer and former Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman or with Garret Rangel. Rangle saw some action last year in place of Sanders.

[lawrence-related id=87511]

The offensive line has been a major issue for several years. They finished 97th in the nation in rushing last year and, averaged just 3.43 yards per carry.

The offense finished 52nd in total offense and is expected to change up its philosophy by operating from under the center more.

This points to Alan Bowman getting the nod with his experience in an offense that goes under center a lot of the time in the Michigan Wolverines. But he hasn’t played in two years after he was a backup for the Wolverines.

Their top two rushers in, Dominic Richardson and Sanders, both transferred out, so they’ll have to replace that production. Cowboys fans have high hopes for Ollie Gordon.

Gordon showed flashes last year but only ran for 308 yards and two touchdowns.

They do return their top wide receiver Brennan Presley, who had 813 yards but only two touchdowns. However, they lose their next five leading receivers from a year ago.

Defensively they finished 115th in the nation in total defense a year ago. The Cowboys have to replace seven starters, including their top two tacklers Jason Taylor II and Mason Cobb.

They lost eight of their top 10 players in tackles and five of their top seven in sacks.

They are moving to a new defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo. Unlike Derek Mason and Jim Knowles before him, who ran mostly a 4-2-5 defense, Nardo runs a 3-3-5 defense.

This means Collin Oliver will be moving to linebacker for the Pokes. Head Coach Mike Gundy did mention at Big 12 Media Days he wants the defense to be multiple and run some four-man fronts as well. I’d expect that means Oliver will still line up on the edge plenty.

Oklahoma State is such a hard team to try to predict. If you look at everything they lost and the state of the program, this looks like an average football team, at best

But Gundy usually does his best when there aren’t a ton of expectations. See 2021, where a lot of people picked the Cowboys to finish in the bottom half of the conference standings.

As we sit here today, this is a game Oklahoma should win. However, with it being the last Bedlam for the foreseeable future, and in Stillwater, there would be nothing sweeter for the Cowboys to play spoiler.

Score Prediction: 41-13 Oklahoma

Predicted Record: 8-1

Longhorns Big 12 team to beat, Sooners third in preseason media poll

The Oklahoma Sooners were picked to finish third in the Big 12 preseason media poll while their Red River Rivals look like the team to beat.

Next week, all 14 teams in the Big 12 will descend upon Arlington, Texas, for Big 12 Media Days at AT&T Stadium.

It marks a landmark season for the conference in what will be the last year featuring the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns before they depart for the SEC next summer.

The Big 12 is as wide open as it has been recently. If one team leads the pack in the public eye, it is the Texas Longhorns.

Their combination of incoming talent and returning star power them as the favorite to win the conference early on.

Ahead of next week’s media days, here’s how those that cover the Big 12 voted in the preseason poll.

Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart: ‘I see myself as the starter’

Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard are formidable contenders, but Jaxson Dart thinks he can beat them both at Ole Miss.

In 2022, former Trojan quarterback Jaxson Dart played for former USC head coach Lane Kiffin with the Ole Miss Rebels. Dart completed 226 of 362 passes at Ole Miss for 2,974 yards and 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 143.6. He also rushed 128 times for 614 yards and another score.

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff brought in two talented options under center this offseason: former Oklahoma State veteran Spencer Sanders and former four-star LSU freshman Walker Howard.

(Sanders) is a four-year starter and a first-team All-Big 12 selection. He is expected to dethrone Dart as the QB1, but Dart hasn’t given up in his battle to retain the starting job.

Don’t count out Howard, who played his first season at LSU and transferred to Ole Miss in January. He is going through spring drills. Howard has four years of eligibility remaining.

Dart could have transferred out of Oxford to avoid a battle with two other legitimate contenders for the starting job. Instead, Dart wants to play for Kiffin and succeed as the Rebels’ main man.

“To be honest, I see myself as the starter,” Dart said “I had Year 1 and I kind of established myself. Now I have Year 2 and I’m getting more bonds with the guys on the team and being a leader. I feel like I’ve taken ownership of that and I’m just ready to do my job and I’m loving where I’m at right now. I expect myself to have a great spring and keep performing like I’m performing.”

Jaxson Dart is among quarterbacks facing the most pressure this spring

Dart has a lot to prove in 2023.

When it comes to pressure at the collegiate level, the quarterbacks are often the position group that feels it most.

Whether they are taking over for a top-tier player, or they must improve from the prior season, it is felt by the signal-callers. In Oxford, Mississippi, it is no different. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has a QB battle on his hands as we move towards spring ball.

An article that highlights some of the most pressure-packed quarterback situations, Jaxson Dart is among the list that includes Jalen Milroe (Alabama), Carson Beck (Georgia), and Quinn Ewers (Texas) among several others.

Per Brad Crawford of 247Sports:

The writing is on the wall at Ole Miss — if Dart has another inconsistent spring, Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders is ready to take Lane Kiffin’s offense to the next level in 2023. Heck, it may happen anyway if Sanders can quickly grasp what the Rebels want to do and the speed at which this attack needs to be played. A four-year starter in Stillwater, Sanders has thrown for 9,553 yards and 67 touchdowns in his career while completing 61% of his passes. And based on his comments to 247Sports after his signing, Sanders is ready to do what he can to unseat Dart as the starter.

“I’m going to come in and work my tail off either way, whether the room is packed or not,” Sanders told 247Sports. “That’s just my mindset. I’ve always had a mindset of competing, driving, striving for better. I’ve never shied away from competition. I’m not going to start now.”

Next, we dive into the QB situation in Oxford

Ranking the Oklahoma Sooners opponents on the 2023 schedule

From the Red River Showdown on down, ranking Oklahoma’s opponents for the 2023 season.

The Oklahoma Sooners have won more Big 12 titles than the rest of the conference combined. They have a shot to add to that number before packing up their hardware and rolling off to the SEC.

But they’ll have to navigate a Big 12 schedule that has been bumpy for the Sooners over the last two seasons, keeping them out of the Big 12 title game.

The Big 12 has become a league marked by parity in recent seasons, leading to a different Big 12 champion in each of the last three seasons. Six teams have participated in the conference title game in the last three seasons, and the conference looks just as wide open as last year.

But the schedule is doable. Oklahoma has some tough road games, but the Sooners should be favored when they go on the road to face Cincinnati, BYU and Oklahoma State.

But which team will be the toughest for the Oklahoma Sooners? Let’s take a look at each opponent from easiest to toughest.

Jaxson Dart’s future at Ole Miss is uncertain after Lane Kiffin grabs two high-profile transfer QBs

Does Jaxson Dart really want to battle Spencer Sanders for QB1 at Ole Miss? We’ll find out soon enough.

LSU freshman quarterback Walker Howard is leaving Baton Rouge and transferring to SEC rival Ole Miss.

Howard was a four-star recruit out of St. Thomas More (Louisiana) and the No. 40 overall recruit in his class on the 247Sports composite.

At LSU, Howard completed 2 of 4 passes for 7 yards and retained redshirt status. He rushed six times for 33 yards.

Rebels coach Lane Kiffin brought in USC Trojan transfer Jaxson Dart before the 2022 season. Jaxson Dart threw for 2,974 yards had 20 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions this past season and will have to fight Howard and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders in the spring and preseason to keep his job.

Ole Miss backup quarterback Luke Altmyer, a former four-star recruit, saw the handwriting on the wall and entered the portal. He transferred to Illinois.

This all means Dart has some decisions to make. Does he want to battle Spencer Sanders for the QB1 spot or transfer to another school where he will not have to scratch and claw for a starting job? Sanders has just one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, which is less than Dart. Presumably, Sanders has the inside track to QB1, in which case it would seem obvious that Dart should seek other opportunities elsewhere.

Five remaining options for Notre Dame in their quest for a transfer quarterback

There are still plenty of solid options remaining in the portal for the Irish

The Irish haven’t had the best luck in finding a quarterback in the transfer portal. Yesterday, another big name was taken off the board when Texas’ [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] decided to head up North to the correct state, but not the right team, as he selected to continue his career at Purdue.

The list of intriguing options continues to dwindle, as [autotag]DJ Uiagalelei[/autotag] opted for [autotag]Oregon State[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] choose [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag], [autotag]Collin Schlee[/autotag] made a big jump from [autotag]Kent State[/autotag] to UCLA and [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] picked Florida.

The Irish were connected to Card and Leary, but obviously both choose elsewhere to strap their helmets up next. Here are a few options for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] that are still out in the portal that make sense for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag].

Hugh Freeze, Spencer Sanders reportedly in contact

After NC State QB Devin Leary signed with Kentucky, Hugh Freeze is seeking another quarterback option from the transfer portal.

Auburn enters the offseason with a lack of depth at the quarterback position.

[autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] and [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag] remain from last season’s roster following the departures of [autotag]Zach Calzada[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Lindsey[/autotag] to the transfer portal. Mix that in with the mysterious future of [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag], and the freshness of 2023 signee [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag], and Auburn will need to add a quarterback with some sort of experience.

“Yes, we are (going to seek a transfer QB),” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said during his early signing period press conference on Wednesday. “If it’s the right one, that we believe we can win games with.”

The next biggest name tied to Auburn is former Oklahoma State quarterback [autotag]Spencer Sanders[/autotag] according to Nathan King of Auburn Undercover.

Sanders, who entered the transfer portal in early December, would be a solid fit in Freeze’s system due to his success as a passer. In four seasons at Oklahoma State, Sanders passed for 9,553 yards and 67 TD. He is also a threat with his feet, as he has added 1,956 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns to his career total.

Sanders is the next name to watch following former NC State quarterback [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag]’s signing with Kentucky. Leary visited Auburn prior to the start of the early signing period but elected to sign with the Wildcats. Coastal Carolina’s [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag] has also been a hot name to follow, however, he canceled a trip to Auburn due to an “academic snag” according to Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live.

Auburn has inked two additions from the transfer portal since Dec. 5, former Vanderbilt EDGE rusher [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] and former FIU tight end [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag].

Who’s next at QB for Florida? Here are some transfer portal options

Here are some of the top names to keep an eye on in the transfer portal as the Gators look for their next signal-caller.

Florida football faces some serious attrition at the quarterback position after the departure of starter [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] to the NFL draft and the dismissal of [autotag]Jalen Kitna[/autotag] from the program due to criminal charges. Add the revocation of 2023 recruit [autotag]Marcus Stokes[/autotag]’ scholarship due to unacceptable behavior, and [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has quite a pickle to deal with this offseason.

The good news is the program has done very well bolstering its depth under center for the long term, earning commitments from 2023 five-star signal-caller [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] as well as 2024’s [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag].

Unfortunately, there is only [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] and a few other untested young gunslingers to help bridge the quarterback room in the interim, which means the Gators will need to dip into the NCAA transfer portal for at least one potential starter in 2023.

Take a look below at the list of potential transfer portal targets Gators Online’s Nick de la Torre put together in the second edition of his hot board, along with some relevant rankings and stats to go along with them.

Ranking the top 10 quarterbacks in the Big 12 during the 2022 season

Breaking down Big 12 quarterback rankings based on their passing grades through the 2022 college football regular season.

The Big 12 Conference has been known for its passing offenses over the better part of the last two decades.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma Sooners, and Oklahoma State Cowboys have led the way with such passers as Landry Jones, Graham Harrell, and Mason Rudolph. The three are among the top four passers in the conference’s history. The Red Raiders produced three of the top 10 passers, while Oklahoma and Texas have produced two apiece.

With the 2022 college football regular season in the history books, Sooners Wire is diving into the numbers for the quarterbacks. Which passer from each Big 12 team led the way and where do they rank among their peers?

We used PFF’s passing grades to rank the signal callers, each quarterback needed at least 150 dropbacks to qualify.
