UCLA QB Collin Schlee heads for transfer portal

Collin Schlee is in the portal once again.

The UCLA Bruins football program is gearing up for its Spring Game later on in April.

With DeShaun Foster and the team undergoing spring practice, they saw a notable addition in the transfer portal. Quarterback Collin Schlee, who transferred to Westwood last season from Kent State, is now back in the portal, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.

Schlee spent three years at Kent State and played in 11 games in 2022, throwing for 2,109 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions before leaving for LA.

In 2023, he was mostly used in a backup role and threw for just 217 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. But, Schlee had 42 carries for 425 yards and three scores, being used in a rushing role quite often by Chip Kelly.

With Foster taking over as head coach and Ethan Garbers the run-away favorite for the QB1 job, Schlee will look elsewhere once again as he enters the portal for the second straight year.

Five remaining options for Notre Dame in their quest for a transfer quarterback

There are still plenty of solid options remaining in the portal for the Irish

The Irish haven’t had the best luck in finding a quarterback in the transfer portal. Yesterday, another big name was taken off the board when Texas’ [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] decided to head up North to the correct state, but not the right team, as he selected to continue his career at Purdue.

The list of intriguing options continues to dwindle, as [autotag]DJ Uiagalelei[/autotag] opted for [autotag]Oregon State[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] choose [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag], [autotag]Collin Schlee[/autotag] made a big jump from [autotag]Kent State[/autotag] to UCLA and [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] picked Florida.

The Irish were connected to Card and Leary, but obviously both choose elsewhere to strap their helmets up next. Here are a few options for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] that are still out in the portal that make sense for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag].

D.J. Uiagalelei heading to UCLA? Still possible, but hardly certain

Kent State QB Collin Schlee is heading to UCLA to play for Chip Kelly. D.J. Uiagalelei might still come to Westwood, but he would face a lot of competition for the job.

The UCLA Bruins are active in the transfer portal, especially at the quarterback position as Dorian Thompson-Robinson finishes his UCLA career.

Chip Kelly has been searching far and wide for a new quarterback, and they landed a commitment from Kent State transfer Collin Schlee. According to Zachary Neel of Ducks Wire, Schlee is likely to be the starter — or at least compete for the starting job in LA in 2023.

“I don’t think Collin Schlee is transferring to the UCLA Bruins to serve as a backup,” Neel wrote. “He may have been told he is going to be in a quarterback competition with other passers — potentially a five-star freshman — but given the career Schlee has built and with his standing as one of the top available quarterbacks in the transfer portal, he is not going to Westwood to wait in the wings.”

The junior became the full-time starter for Kent State this past season, throwing for 13 touchdowns and five interceptions and 2,109 yards. Head coach Sean Lewis dashed to the Colorado Buffaloes to become the offensive coordinator on Deion Sanders’ talented staff in Boulder, and Schlee now heads out to the Pac-12.

There could be another twist with Dante Moore decommitting from Oregon and going to UCLA, but as Neel mentions, it would be surprising if Schlee didn’t come to UCLA to be the starter — or at least have a chance to win the job.

This raises an obvious question: Will former Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei still transfer to UCLA, as many people expected? It’s certainly still possible, but it’s hardly a lock with all the competition in the quarterback room in Westwood. That is one of the significant quarterback transfer dramas which has not yet been resolved in this offseason cycle.

What does QB Collin Schlee’s commitment to UCLA mean for Dante Moore and the Ducks?

UCLA landed QB Collin Schlee in the transfer portal on Saturday. What does that mean for Oregon when it comes to Dante Moore?

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the future of the Oregon Ducks quarterback position, and how there were endless outcomes for how things would likely unfold over the coming weeks. With Bo Nix, Dante Moore and, surprisingly, DJ Uiagalelei acting as the main dominoes, it was important to watch their every move.

However, a different quarterback served as the first domino to fall on Saturday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news that former Kent State QB Collin Schlee was transferring to the UCLA Bruins. The move was confirmed by the school.

Believe it or not, this has a potentially major impact on the Ducks, as I wrote on Friday. Let’s break down why it’s important.

Tracking the Oregon QB dominoes with Dante Moore, Bo Nix, DJ Uiagalelei and more

At this point, there are a million different ways that Oregon’s QB situation could play out. Let’s try to keep them straight.

When it comes to the quarterback position for the Oregon Ducks, there are about a million different ways we could answer the question “who starts at QB in 2023?”

Will it be Bo Nix? That’s my odds-on favorite at the moment, but the Ducks’ 2022 starter had an opportunity to announce to the world that he’s coming back for another year with Oregon on Friday afternoon, and he instead kicked the can down the road.

Will it be five-star recruit Dante Moore? If you asked me a week ago, I would have said that he is a likely option, but the way the recruiting world has unfolded over the past few days makes that seem rather unlikely at this point.

What about a transfer who isn’t on the roster? That’s a reasonable path, and there are a number of viable available options who would likely love to play in Eugene.

While there can’t be multiple answers to this question, it’s easy to see how all of these options are connected in some way or another. Over the past few days, it’s become incredibly confusing to keep track of who is going where, and what school is looking at what player — so much so that you might be better off with a ball of string, some push pins and a cork-board as we get down to the end of the recruiting cycle.

Let’s dive into what we know and see what it tells us about where the Ducks go from here.
