A former Clemson running back has found a new place to call home.

Michel Dukes, who entered the transfer portal last month, announced via Instagram on Sunday that he has committed to South Florida, where former Clemson offensive coordinator Jeff Scott is in his second year as the football program’s head coach.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney commented on Dukes’ transfer decision last month and told reporters there was a “team issue” with Dukes, a junior from Charleston, S.C.

“We had a team issue this week with him, and he just felt like it was time to move on,” Swinney said. “So, he hasn’t really played. But you hate it. Again, that’s kind of where we are in college football. He’s one of the best athletes on this team, it just takes a lot more than that. But same thing. Wish him nothing but the best. I’ll do everything I can to help him, but just focus on the guys that are here.”

Dukes had seen minimal playing time for the Tigers this season, with his only action coming in the game against South Carolina State on Sept. 11 when he rushed twice for seven yards and caught a 3-yard pass.

Dukes entered 2021 with 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries in 88 snaps over 18 games.

Lady Vols remain undefeated by shutting out South Florida

Lady Vols remain undefeated by shutting out South Florida.

A pair of late goals propelled Tennessee into the win column Thursday night on the road.

Brooke Wilson and Mackenzie George each tallied in the second half to lift the No. 22 Lady Vols to a 2-0 victory over No. 23 South Florida at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Wilson scored her third marker of the 2021 campaign to give Tennessee (5-0-0) a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute of the match. Jordan Fusco recorded an assist on the first goal of the match.

The Lady Vols sealed their victory a short time later when Mackenzie George scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted marker, in the 82nd minute.

The Bulls (3-2-0) outshot Tennessee, 18-14, but the Lady Vols had 10 of their shots land on target while South Florida had just three of its shots land on frame.

Tennessee has not conceded a goal in 2021 and recorded three saves from goalkeeper Lindsey Romig against South Florida.

Notre Dame Cornerback Isaiah Rutherford Transfers to Arizona

It can’t be easy to join a big-time college football program but barely see the field.

It can’t be easy to join a big-time college football program but barely see the field. That was the case with Notre Dame cornerback Isaiah Rutherford. At some point, he had to figure there was a program that would better utilize him. He thinks he’ll have his chance at Arizona, which is why he’s transferring there.

Rutherford, a native of Sacramento, California, did not see any game action for the Irish in 2019. This past season, he finally got to experience that as a sophomore, but only in the blowout wins over South Florida and Pittsburgh and the home finale against Syracuse. Even then, he never registered on the stats sheet.

Rutherford joins a Wildcats team whose secondary put up low numbers in 2020. Though they only played five games, they ranked near the bottom nationally in interceptions and passes defended among others. No, it’s not fair to judge them by such limited action. Still, it’s nice of the them to get reinforcements, and we wish Rutherford the best with his new opportunity.

Updated: List of this week’s college football games canceled/postponed due to COVID-19

Add another top team to the list of college football programs who won’t be playing a game on Saturday afternoon after this ACC cancellation.

Yesterday we shared with you the list of all college football games that had been cancelled or postponed as a result of COVID-19.  We said then that we would be surprised if anymore came to be but that in this 2020 world we’re living in that we couldn’t be certain.

My exact words on the matter were as follows:

As of Friday afternoon, it’s hard to imagine any more college football games being called off for this weekend but it’s certainly a possibility in this strange time. – Nick Shepkowski

Well, it turns out we can add to the list we put out on Friday as No. 4 Clemson’s game at Florida State has been postponed due to a positive test of a Clemson player on Friday.

That’s certainly a shocker for both teams as well as the entire ACC and all of college football.

Here is an updated list of all the Saturday games that have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19:

No 4 Clemson at Florida State
Ole Miss at No. 5 Texas A&M
Georgia Tech at No. 12 Miami (FL)
Charlotte at No. 15 Marshall
No. 22 Texas at Kansas
Central Arkansas at No. 24 Louisiana
Michigan State at Maryland
Wake Forest at Duke
Houston at SMU
UL Monroe at Louisiana Tech
UNLV at Colorado State
San Jose State at Fresno State
Navy at South Florida
Arizona State at Colorado

Here’s to hoping I’m not having to update this list again later today.

Complete list of postponed/canceled college football games this weekend

COVID-19 continues to terrorize the country. Here are all the college football games that were called off this weekend as a result.

In a year like none, we’ve ever seen in college football and one we hope we never see again, at least in terms of trying to play the grand game through a global pandemic.

In the meantime, we continue to have cancellations and postponements for games that were scheduled to be played this week.

As of Friday afternoon, it’s hard to imagine any more college football games being called off for this weekend but it’s certainly a possibility in this strange time.

Here is the complete list that is up to date with every game that has been called off for this weekend:

Ole Miss at No. 5 Texas A&M
Georgia Tech at No. 12 Miami (FL)
Charlotte at No. 15 Marshall
No. 22 Texas at Kansas
Central Arkansas at No. 24 Louisiana
Michigan State at Maryland
Wake Forest at Duke
Houston at SMU
UL Monroe at Louisiana Tech
UNLV at Colorado State
San Jose State at Fresno State
Navy at South Florida
Arizona State at Colorado

Many believed LSU and Arkansas would be canceled as well but as of Friday afternoon reports have that game being all-systems-go for Saturday.

Notre Dame’s most recent opponent now also cancels Saturday game

Just one day after Notre Dame postponed their game at Wake Forest this weekend, the most recent opponent of the Irish has now called off.

After playing at Notre Dame this past weekend South Florida has decided to postpone their weekend affair at Florida Atlantic.

Notre Dame’s football team is dealing with their own COVID-19 outbreak as the Irish and Wake Forest cancelled their game for this Saturday.

Now Notre Dame’s most recent opponent has also postponed their game as South Florida won’t take the field against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, a decision that was made as a joint agreement between the schools.

Here is the full release from South Florida:

The interesting part here is that it doesn’t involve any positive tests by South Florida players but instead it cites the contact tracing being based on the fact Notre Dame has had a recent outbreak.

Based on what we know it certainly feels like a matter of when and not if positive tests are going to come back for players on South Florida’s roster.

Here’s to hoping I’m wrong on that but it certainly feels like it’s headed that way.

Notre Dame Football: Why did Brian Kelly apologize for halftime speech?

What was said was entirely harmless and entirely PG compared to what is often said in locker rooms of all ages. So why did he have to apologize?

If you were watching Notre Dame and South Florida closely in the second half Saturday you saw Brian Kelly deliver a halftime speech where he stated how badly he wanted his team to pitch a shutout.

While speaking, Kelly stated to his team that:

“We’re scoring every time we’ve got the football,” Kelly said with Notre Dame leading 35-0 at halftime. “We’re not letting them score any points. We want a shutout. We’re playing for a shutout. This thing is too damn hard. I’m tired of being the nice guy.”

For anyone that has ever spent any amount of time in an athletic locker room or any time around athletes it was harmless and easy to understand what Kelly was trying to say.

It had nothing to do with South Florida but everything to do with his team finishing the task at hand, not becoming complacent despite Notre Dame being on the right side of a blowout and headed towards 2-0.

It’s like when coaches talk about players having killer instincts.  They aren’t asking their players to out on the field and literally kill someone, they’re talking about getting their teams to play at a high level and when you have a chance to mentally break your opponent, you go ahead and do so and essentially end the competition.

Again, the speech was entirely harmless and showed a coach trying to keep his team motivated in the middle of a game that certainly was not.

It was not done out of disrespect for South Florida or anyone else, it was said to his team about their performance.

So why then did Brian Kelly feel the need to apologize for what was said in that video on Monday?

“I didn’t know that was going to go public,” Kelly said Monday during his press availability. “If I knew it was public, I probably would have articulated it a little bit differently.”

So I’m guessing somewhere along the lines Kelly caught some backlash over what was said during the video.

Someone who has probably never been outside their comfort zone saw the speech and was mad that a football coach dare to tell his team not to be Mr. Nice Guy out on the playing field.

Of things I’ve heard in locker rooms from the high school ranks all the way through the pros this grades out about as PG as you’re going to find.  Sure, it isn’t quite the G rating suitable for all but was still entirely harmless.

Yet Brian Kelly felt the need to apologize for it Monday because I’m guessing someone, somewhere got their feelings hurt over something incredibly minimal.

I was expecting to hear many things from Brian Kelly when he met the media on Monday but an apology for a harmless speech was certainly not one of them.
