CBS Sports Big 12 Hot Seat Ratings: ‘Pressure is mounting’ for Brent Venables

In their updated hot seat rating for the 2023 season, CBS Sports believes “pressure is mounting” for Oklahoma’s Brent Venables.

Coming out of a 2022 season where the Oklahoma Sooners had their first losing season since 1998 with one of the worst defenses in the team’s history, it’s not unreasonable to have questions about the direction of the program.

At the same time, it’s only been one year, and we haven’t seen Venables’ recruiting classes take the field and play significant snaps yet. The team may not have much success to speak about on the field yet, but the coaching staff has done a tremendous job off of it on the recruiting trail.

They’ve put together two top 10 classes, and with the way things are shaping up, the Sooners are looking at a third straight top 10 class in the 2024 cycle.

Ahead of the 2023 season, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd took a look at every head coach in the FBS and determined where they stood on his “hot seat rating system.”

It’s a system that rates coaches from 0-5. “Zero” represents coaches that are untouchable, like Nick Saban or Kirby Smart. “Five” represents coaches that are in must-win mode heading into 2023.

Here’s a look at where the 14 Big 12 coaches stand heading into 2023. We also included where each coach ranked in CBS Sports’ head coach rankings in the Big 12 and overall and their career winning percentages.

How does the Big 12 stack up nationally in Athlon Sports 1-133 power rankings for the 2023 college football season?

The 2023 Big 12 season is going to be one like none other. With a strong amount of parity in the league, the race to Arlington will go on until the final weekend of the regular season this fall.

If CBS Sports Big 12 win projections are any indication, eight teams will finish within two wins of each other by the end of the year. Now, how that plays out in the conference is anyone’s guess, but there’s a group of five or six teams that could reasonably contend for the Big 12 title in 2023.

Over at Athlon Sports, Steve Lassan released his updated 1-133 rankings for the Football Bowl Subdivision. Where did the Big 12 members land? Let’s take a look.

Deep Dive: Look into career of new QB Tanner Mordecai

Will Tanner Mordecai be Russell Wilson 2.0 for the Badgers?

Since he took over at head coach, Luke Fickell has completely changed the culture of the Badger football team. By bringing in coordinators like Phil Longo and Mike Tressel as well, Fickell has made Wisconsin a far more intriguing option for athletes.

Longo’s “Air Raid” offense in particular has been a huge bonus in the Badgers’ favor this offseason and has helped the team reel in talent from across the country.

One player they have gotten via the transfer portal is former SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Mordecai will use his final year of eligibility to join the Badgers in 2023 and he’s a current frontrunner to be their next signal caller.

Here’s how the field general’s career has stacked up on his way to Madison:

USA TODAY Sports graded all 131 FBS teams, so how did the Big 12 teams fair?

It was a memorable season for the Big 12. At least for some teams. The programs that were considered the preseason favorites for the Big 12 title failed to meet expectations.

Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, the three teams that most believed would compete for the conference championship, went a combined 19-20 on the season. At the same Kansas State, TCU, and Kansas saw resurgent years, with the Wildcats winning their first conference title in a decade.

Texas made progress in their rebuild, and even Iowa State played some good football, at least on the defensive side of the ball.

It was a deep league in 2022, and a lot of the Big 12 beat up on itself. Only TCU managed to get by without multiple conference losses.

Looking back at the 2022 season, USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerburg graded all 131 FBS teams and here’s how the Big 12 programs fared.

Who is TCU football’s head coach?

Sonny Dykes has had one of the most impressive first seasons at the Power Five level in recent memory.

Entering the 2022 season, TCU opted for a seismic change within the football program. It replaced longtime head coach Gary Patterson with Sonny Dykes, beginning a new era for the program.

The Horned Frogs forced out Patterson — the architect of the modern program who had been the head man since 2000 — in 2021 following four consecutive disappointing seasons. Moving on from the 62-year-old Patterson made sense, but it didn’t come without some risks.

He inherited a program that had been left out of the conference merger that created the Big 12 and had spent decades adrift. Under Patterson’s watch, TCU won double-digit games 10 times.

Hiring Dykes — a Texas native who is well-connected in the state — seemed like a natural fit. A former head coach at California, Dykes was fired in 2016 after going 19-30 in four years. He eventually landed back in the Lone Star State at SMU, where he returned the Mustangs program to consistent status.

No one expected TCU’s turnaround in Dykes’ first season. A team that went 5-7 in 2021 sits at 13-1 in 2022 after upsetting Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinals. The Horned Frogs will play for their first national title since 1938 against Georgia.

Can the TCU Horned Frogs complete their improbable national title run?

TCU’s run to the national title is the stuff movie scripts are made of. Can they topple the defending national champions, Georgia Bulldogs?

I am a sucker for a good story. I’m also a big sports fan. The season that the TCU Horned Frogs are having has been nothing short of a fantastic tale that has one more chapter to write.

As a fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, seeing another Big 12 team win a College Football Playoff game in their first try stings, but the Horned Frogs earned their spot. They deserve their shot at the national title.

We are more than a year removed from TCU and Gary Patterson parting ways and finishing with a 5-7 record. Their head coach is in his first year on the job. Their starting quarterback started the season at No. 2 on the depth chart. Teams like that simply don’t play for national championships in football.

The Frogs will be. It defies logic.

The Michigan Wolverines had the better players at nearly every position and arguably a superior coaching staff. They had already beaten Ohio State in Columbus during the regular season. The stars were aligned for Jim Harbaugh to win his first national championship in Ann Arbor.

The Frogs said no.

Games are won on grass (or turf), not stat sheets. TCU is the underdog story that college football hasn’t had in a very long time. Someone will make a movie about their season if they can pull off another upset.

On Monday, it’s Apollo vs. Rocky. The heavyweight champion of the world vs. an improbable contender. When the two sides meet up on Monday night in the College Football Playoff national championship game, everyone not wearing Red and Black or flying an SEC flag will be pulling for the Horned Frogs to complete their magical run.

Final Big 12 football head coach power rankings

How do the Big 12 coaches finish in Pat’s final conference power rankings of 2022?

The 2022 college football season is done for everyone except Georgia and Texas Christian. They will meet in Los Angeles on Monday, Jan. 9, to find out who is the best team in 2022.

TCU could become the first Big 12 team to win the title since the Texas Longhorns accomplished this feat in 2005. It is a tall task, asking a team to beat the Bulldogs who have lost just once in their last 29 games.

Back to the task at hand, I am laying out my final power rankings for each head coach in the Big 12. These rankings are only based on what transpired during the season and factoring in where they were slated to finish in the Big 12 preseason poll.

We kick it off at the top with a first-year head coach who is looking to make history in the Lone Star state.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes breaks down Michigan football’s line play

Will the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl be resolved in the trenches? #GoBlue #CFBPlayoff

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. — They say that football games are won in the trenches. For Michigan football, that’s proven to be true all season long. But TCU isn’t shying away from the challenge.

The Wolverines and Horned Frogs are destined to meet in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on Saturday, and TCU head coach Sonny Dykes is aware of the challenges that his team faces.

Michigan’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award for the second-straight year, the first team to ever do so, earning the right to call itself the school with the best line in the country. Dykes feels that the Wolverine offense is predicated on the run, with that establishment set by the line play up front.

“They’re big and they’re physical, they’re well-coached, they’ve got a lot of experience,” Dykes said. “And they have a good scheme, you know what I mean? “They do a nice job of playing to their strengths. I think that’s been the thing that I’ve been impressed with, when you look at their team, it’s just the way it’s constructed, they’ve done a nice job of saying, ‘OK, what do we have here? What’s our strengths? What’s our weaknesses? Let’s play to our strengths, or stay away from our weaknesses.’

“And they’ve done a really good job coaching, not everybody does that. A lot of times coaches have a system, and they’re gonna run their system, and maybe the players don’t fit the system. Well, at Michigan, they’ve done a really, really good job of knowing what they want to do, having a goal in mind, having a personality, and then having the players to go out and fill those roles and execute that vision. And as a result, you get a really good team. I feel that way about them really on offense and defense. I think the team is constructed in a way that makes sense in the Big Ten.

“And I think that they’ve done a really nice job of playing to their strengths, and they’ve got tremendous running backs. They’re powerful guys. And, you know, the thing I’m impressed with is their ability to stay patient with the run game. That’s one thing they’ve been able to do and I think that’s why they’ve had so much success in the second half of games, still grind it out. They start to pull away from teams late in the third, early in the fourth quarter.”

But what about the other side of the ball?

Much of the attention in the game is going toward the battle between the TCU offense and the Michigan defense. And while the premise revolves around the Horned Frogs’ skill position players, again, the battle will likely be resolved in the trenches.

Dykes was, again, very complimentary of what the Wolverines do up front, but notes that it’s an attack that works well in the Big Ten.

“I love their tackles — really physical, good players, play with their hands well, do a great job getting off blocks,” Dykes said. “Really impressed with those two tackles. I think those guys are really, really good football players. They’re very well-coached and good technicians.

“The ends are big guys. We don’t see ends that are maybe as big as these guys. It’s kind of not that typical, really in the Big 12. It’s built a little bit for speed as opposed to the length and size these guys have. And they can still run and that’s the thing about the Michigan guys. They’re long and they’re athletic, and they got great speed, they can run. But the fronts are impressive. I think that, to me, is the strength of the defense.

“They’ve got really good linebackers, a lot of length and athleticism on the back end. But, I think they’re built up right.”

Michigan football and TCU will kick off at 4 p.m. EST at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
