Iowa State betting scandal adds another likely win to Texas’ schedule

While Iowa State looked to be a likely upset, the recent betting scandal tips the scales toward Texas.

The Iowa State Cyclones are in the midst of controversy. The Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes are catching heat for betting on contests including the head-to-head Cy-Hawk game on the football field. The news is a black eye on college football and Iowa State.

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers headlines the list of players. After video displayed Dekkers appearing to accept a $500 bet that his team would beat an opponent, it’s unlikely Texas will face the Cyclones quarterback in 2023.

Earlier this offseason, I predicted the Cyclones would defeat the Longhorns as one of the team’s two losses. At this point, it’s not happening. For that reason we’re entertaining an 11-win season for the Longhorns though we have pushed back against that win total.

The likely dismissal of Dekkers negates whatever advantage the Iowa State defense would have over Texas. And while you might expect Texas to score in the mid-to-low 20s or lower like they have over the last four seasons, the Cyclones offense could score 10 points or less.

There’s plenty that could occur over the next month but it looks like the schedule sets up for a breakout season for Texas.

Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers’ NCAA eligibility in limbo following criminal complaint

As Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers’ eligibility comes into question, the Cy-Hawk Series game changes as well.

The Cy-Hawk Series is the center of the sports gambling world currently for what appears like all of the wrong reasons. Rather than the profitability that the sports gambling market brings in, the focus is currently shining a bright light on the dark side of sports betting.

News broke Tuesday from the Des Moines Register’s Travis Hines and Randy Peterson that Iowa State Cyclones quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been charged with the criminal complaint of tampering with records by the Story County Attorney’s Office.

Here is a dive into what Dekkers is accused of, some updates on where things currently stand, and what all of this could mean going forward.

Iowa St QB Hunter Dekkers’ attorney releases statement on betting investigation

It appears that Hunter Dekkers will not report to fall camp until the investigation is completed.

An investigation into Iowa wagering has opened the floodgates for both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones. Most recently, it was ISU QB Hunter Dekkers that has become the center of the investigation per reports.

In recent years we have seen this hit the NFL side with betting on games, most notably with former Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley. He was suspended for the entire 2022 season.

The NCAA prohibits sports betting or providing information to individuals to use in sports betting. If an athlete is found to have partaken in these activities it would result in loss of any remaining eligibility. Any wagers made on May 2 and beyond are subject to the following punishment per the NCAA:

  • Student-athletes who engage in activities to influence the outcomes of their own games or knowingly provide information to individuals involved in sports betting activities will potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports.
  • If a student-athlete wagers on their own sport at another school, education on sports wagering rules and prevention will be required as a condition of reinstatement, and the loss of 50% of one season of eligibility will be considered.

The NCAA laid out the following punishments for the amount of bets placed.

$200 or less: sports wagering rules and prevention education.

$201-$500: loss of 10% of a season of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education.

$501-$800: loss of 20% of a season of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education.

Greater than $800: loss of 30% of a season of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education.

With all eyes turning to Hunter Dekkers at this point, his legal team released the following statement via social media channels.

“This prosecution interferes with and politicizes what is the business of Iowa State University and the NCAA. The investigation at the Iowa universities is the tip of an iceberg. Thousands and thousands of college athletes place bets—usually very small ones—with shared accounts. That is for the schools and the NCAA to police.

The statement goes on to announce that Dekkers will not participate in fall camp.

“So he can focus on his studies and on the defense of this criminal charge, Hunter has informed the University and the coaching staff that he cannot participate in fall football camp.”

It remains to be seen how this will impact the Cyclones and head coach Matt Campbell, who are coming off their first losing season since 2016. That was the first year under Campbell and Iowa State finished 3-9.

2023 Season Preview: Iowa State brings pesky defense to Norman

Iowa State has been a team who has given Oklahoma fits just about every year since beating the Sooners in Norman in 2017.

For the first Sooner conference home game, Oklahoma will take on the Iowa State Cyclones.

Iowa State has been a team who has given Oklahoma fits just about every year since beating the Sooners in Norman in 2017.

They play a gritty, hard-nosed defense led by Jon Heacock. They also return a decent amount of their production.

According to ESPN (ESPN+), the Cyclones rank 67th in returning production. They bring back 76 percent of their offense, which ranks 28th, and 51 percent of their defense, which ranks 95th.

Offensively they have a big task of replacing Xavier Hutchinson. Hutchinson was their go-to guy at wide receiver. He had over 1,100 yards last season.

Other than that, they return just about everyone else. Cyclones quarterback, Hunter Dekkers, returns. Their leading rusher in, Jirehl Brock, returns as well.

The key for the Cyclones is whether Dekkers can stay away from turning it over. Last season he threw 19 touchdowns but also threw 14 interceptions.

But head coach Matt Campbell has to figure out the offense. They ranked 83rd in the nation in total offense just a season ago. That was good for last in the conference.

Defensively they ranked fourth in total defense. They bring back four of their top six tacklers from a year ago.

But they lose their top three in tackles for loss and sacks. One of those was Will McDonald IV, who was drafted in the first round by the New York Jets in April.

They have to figure out how to generate pressure and develop that defensive line. But with Heacock at the helm, there shouldn’t be too much to worry about.

Ultimately, this game falls into a weird spot. Oklahoma should be riding a four-game winning streak, and the following week, they’ll play their Red River Rival in the Cotton Bowl.

This game will be talked about as a potential trap game for the Sooners.

We’ve seen far too often if you look ahead, Iowa State will beat you. We also have seen Heacock give Lincoln Riley and Jeff Lebby fits.

I think their defense keeps it close but can their offense take advantage? I’m just not sure about that.

Score Prediction: 20-17 Oklahoma

Predicted Record: 5-0

Where did Big 12 teams land in Athlon Sports 1-133 rankings for the 2023 season?

How does the Big 12 stack up nationally in Athlon Sports 1-133 power rankings for the 2023 college football season?

The 2023 Big 12 season is going to be one like none other. With a strong amount of parity in the league, the race to Arlington will go on until the final weekend of the regular season this fall.

If CBS Sports Big 12 win projections are any indication, eight teams will finish within two wins of each other by the end of the year. Now, how that plays out in the conference is anyone’s guess, but there’s a group of five or six teams that could reasonably contend for the Big 12 title in 2023.

Over at Athlon Sports, Steve Lassan released his updated 1-133 rankings for the Football Bowl Subdivision. Where did the Big 12 members land? Let’s take a look.

TCU stays undefeated with win over Texas: Big 12 Power Rankings after week 11

How do this week’s Big 12 power rankings look after week 11 action?

The Big 12’s College Football Playoff hopes stayed alive with TCU’s impressive road win over the Texas Longhorns.

It wasn’t an impressive margin of victory, but its ability to slow Bijan Robinson was impressive. The offense is what helped the Horned Frogs get to 9-0, but it was the defense that gave them their 10th win.

They held Texas to 199 total yards and 28 net rushing yards in the game. If they can get consistent defensive efforts from that side of the ball, they’ll be hard to beat in Big 12 play and should cement themselves as a College Football Playoff team in a month.

They stayed at No. 1 in this week’s power rankings, but what about the rest of the Big 12?

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Baylor Bears: Sooners Wire staff predictions

Oklahoma looks to stay on the winning side of things against Baylor. Here are this week’s Sooners Wire staff predictions.

The Oklahoma Sooners look to continue their winning ways against the visiting Baylor Bears who come in on the heels of wins over Kansas and Texas Tech. The Sooners have won two straight as well, picking up wins over Kansas and Iowa State.

It was the win over Iowa State that is important for this team, who showed they could win an ugly offensive game against a good defensive team.

The Sooners defense stepped up, taking the ball away from Hunter Dekkers and the Cyclones three times. They forced seven tackles for loss and held the Cyclones to 27 carries for 66 yards on the ground. An incredible performance for a team that entered the game allowing more than 200 yards per game rushing.

It was a strong step in the right direction for a defense that had allowed 40 points per game in four straight games.

Can they continue to build on their improved defensive performance and get a bounce back game from the offense?

Oklahoma’s win against Iowa State wasn’t a flashy endeavor. But it was a two touchdown win over a team that hadn’t lost a Big 12 game by more than a touchdown.

The Sooners’ 27-13 win over Iowa State was a combined effort that saw some inspired performances from several areas. It truly was a team win.

Here’s how Oklahoma graded out by position group for their performance against Iowa State.

Best pictures from Oklahoma’s 27-13 win over Iowa State

Relive the Sooners’ 27-13 win over Iowa State with some fantastic photos from the game.

The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business to move to 5-3 and 2-3 in the Big 12 with their 27-13 win over the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. It wasn’t necessarily a dominating performance in any one phase, but all three phases made contributions on the way to the 14-point win.

[autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag] had his fifth 100-yard rushing day of the season, and the defense recorded three interceptions, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a fourth down stop at the end of the game to secure the win.

[autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] led the way in the passing game with four receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown, but it was the special teams unit that made the biggest contributions.

[autotag]Zach Schmit[/autotag] was 2 for 2 on field goals and hit both extra points, but it was his touchdown that helped the Oklahoma Sooners the most, putting them up 13-3 in the first half.

The Sooners’ defense shut down the Iowa State Cyclones’ running game, holding [autotag]Jirehl Brock[/autotag] to 11 carries for 22 yards and just two yards per carry after coming into the game averaging five yards per carry for the season.

Quarterback [autotag]Hunter Dekkers[/autotag] was forced to throw it 57 times and although he put up a lot of yards, he wasn’t able to get the Cyclones in the end zone.

It was an important performance for a Sooners team looking to build momentum for the remainder of 2022 to carry into next year. Let’s take a look at some of the best photos from the Sooners win.

5 takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners 27-13 win over the Iowa State Cyclones

Oklahoma produced in all three phases on Saturday vs. Iowa State in their 27-13 win. Here are 5 takeaways from the pivotal road victory. from @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma may have found its defensive swagger once again. After the bye week, Oklahoma made the trip to Ames, Iowa to take on Matt Campbell’s Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones entered the game 10th nationally in yards per rush allowed and were sixth in the nation in points allowed per game at 15.5. They also feature Will McDonald, one of Iowa State’s all-time best at rushing the passer.

Oklahoma beat the Cyclones 27-13 behind a fairly complementary performance in all three phases.

[autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag] contributed 101 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The defense tallied three interceptions of Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers. Lastly, [autotag]Zach Schmit[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Turk[/autotag] provided the impact on special teams to put the Sooners over the top. Schmit scored on a fake field goal pass and nailed two field goal attempts, while Michael Turk chipped in two 60-yard punts to flip the field in the fourth quarter, including one that pinned the Cyclones at the one on the drive following a score that made it 20-13.
