Former Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra is transferring to SMU, left Auburn

One former OU player is joining another elsewhere. Tanner Mordecai transferred to SMU, and former tight end Grant Calcaterra will join him.

One former Oklahoma player is joining another elsewhere.

Tanner Mordecai left the Sooners after the season was over as Spencer Rattler won the quarterback competition this last fall and five-star Caleb Williams on the way. The former Oklahoma quarterback didn’t move too far away as he will now play at SMU in Dallas.

Grant Calcaterra retired from football during the 2019 season due to concussion issues. He then came out of retirement and signed with Auburn. The Tigers fired their head coach and Calcaterra was on the move.

The former Oklahoma tight end announced on Wednesday he’s heading to SMU, joining Mordecai in Dallas.

In his Oklahoma career, Calcaterra finished with 637 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. His career includes memorable moments like the two touchdowns against Texas in the 2018 Big 12 Championship or the finger-tip catch against TCU in 2017.

Former Oklahoma QB Tanner Mordecai will transfer to SMU

After entering the transfer portal on Sunday, former Oklahoma quarterback Tanner Mordecai will transfer to SMU.

One of the Oklahoma players who has announced his intention to transfer has already found a new home.

It was reported on Sunday that backup quarterback Tanner Mordecai had entered the transfer portal, and now on Tuesday Sooners Wire is reporting that he will head down south to join SMU.

In sporadic playing time over the last three years, Mordecai completed 50 of his 70 career passes for 639 yards and four touchdowns. Head coach Lincoln Riley had stressed in the weeks leading up to the season that he felt comfortable should he be the starter and that it was a legitimate competition for the starting role, but Spencer Rattler did end up getting the nod as expected.

The Mustangs have gone down a similar road before with their quarterback for the past two seasons being Texas transfer Shane Buechele. It will be interesting to now see how quickly Mordecai can get into the fold in Dallas and hope to earn the starting role there.

Dallas Cowboys sign Garrett Gilbert from Cleveland Browns practice squad

According to Tom Pelissero, former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys off Cleveland’s practice squad.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, former Texas Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys off the Cleveland Browns‘ practice squad. This move comes after Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants.

Gilbert will serve as Dallas’ third-string quarterback once the move is completed. Former TCU star Andy Dalton will take over as the Cowboys’ starter while rookie Ben DiNucci will serve as the backup.

After transferring to SMU in 2012, Glibert was a sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft. Gilbert has played for six NFL teams and was a player in the brief Alliance of American Football for the Orlando Apollos.

Gilbert is the AAF’s all-time leader in passing yards and has the highest passer rating in league history. More impressively, the veteran quarterback was a Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots in 2015.

SMU WR Reggie Roberson Jr. out for season with knee injury

SMU wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. will miss the rest of the 2020 college football season due to a knee injury

One of the top wide receiver prospects in the country will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

SMU’s Reggie Roberson Jr. suffered a knee injury that will knock him out of the 2020 college football season, head coach Sonny Dykes confirmed Monday (via Sam Blum, Dallas Morning News).

Roberson, who saw his 2019 campaign also cut short by injury, was having a breakout campaign for the Mustangs. He finished the 2020 season with 474 yards on just 22 receptions, averaging 21.5 yards per receptions with five touchdowns.

The six-foot, 200-pound Roberson is sure to be one of the top senior prospects at his position in the 2021 NFL Draft class.

Former Longhorn Shane Buechele joins Sam Ehlinger a top the active ranks

Former Longhorn Shane Buechele has now joined his former teammate on top of the active leaderboards. He and sam Ehlinger are at 9,000 yards.

When Sam Ehlinger got to campus in 2017, no one knew that Shane Buechele was going to end up leaving after the 2018 college football season. Shane was a sophomore when Ehlinger arrived, and he was named the starter ahead of the 2017 opener.

Buechele would appear in nine games that season and two the following season. He would transfer to SMU and become the guy for that team in 2019. Not a big shock due to the fact that he was a Charlie Strong recruit. Ehlinger was part of Strong’s last class but he stayed committed to Texas with Tom Herman arriving. Seemed clear early on that Herman favored Ehlinger. Both quarterbacks have done good things on the field for their teams.

Now Shane Buechele joins his former teammate in Sam Ehlinger a top the active ranks. Following the win over UTEP, Ehlinger passed the 9,000 yard mark for his career. In the game on Saturday night Buechele joined Ehlinger passing the 9,000 yard mark for his career as well. These are the only two active quarterbacks to pass the 9,000 yard mark.

Ehlinger might have the edge in passing touchdowns and rushing yards, it will be an interesting race this season. Which quarterback will finish with the most yards over a career? You should never bet against Sam Ehlinger in anything but it could be a friendly rivalry between former teammates.

Big 12 Football: Oklahoma State-Tulsa game delayed due to COVID-19

The Big 12 Conference has its second game that has been impacted by COVID-19. The OSU-Tulsa game has now been moved back a week.

On the heels of the Southern Methodist-Texas Christian football game being postponed due to COVID-19, another game is being impacted. It doesn’t come as much of a shock considering Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s recent comments about the postponement.

“I’m not even sure how to answer that question,” Bowlsby said when asked if he was confident in playing a full season. “I will tell you this: I don’t think the TCU/SMU game will be the last game we will not be able to play. I have said to some of you, as well as to others, that I expect there will be disruptions and we’ve already had one. – according to Riley Gates on 247Sports

That quote came just hours ahead of another Big 12 game being disrupted. The Oklahoma State and Tulsa game will also be postponed. This according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, who stated it was being pushed back one week due to Tulsa’s COVID issues.

This should serve as a reminder that despite the fact that college football has returned, we are far from being out of the woods just yet. While the Texas Longhorns have been the “gold standard” for protecting their athletes, according to quarterback Sam Ehlinger, it can strike at any time. So keep monitoring social distancing and wear your masks. This is the only way that we can watch the Texas Longhorns play the game we love in 2020.

SMU-TCU becomes first Big 12 game postponed due to COVID-19

The SMU-TCU game becomes the first Big 12 game to be cancelled due to COVID-19. The Big 12 also announced roster guidelines.

By now you have probably already heard the news. The Southern Methodist and Texas Christian football game has been postponed due to COVID-19 testing. TCU announced the postponement on Friday.

Texas Christian’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jeremiah Donati released the following statement.

We are are disappointed to announce that our upcoming football game against SMU will not be played as scheduled on September 11. We have agreed with SMU to monitor dates throughout the season to potentially make up the game.

In the course of following CDC guidelines and our aggressive testing and contact tracing strategy, we discovered that some student-athletes and support staff in our football program have tested positive for COVID-19. Those individuals were notified immediately and currently abiding by CDC protocols.

No one is currently facing serious health issues, and we intend to continue our enforcement of strict standards to protect the program and our community. Everyone’s health and safety remains our top priority. We share in your disappointment, but firmly believe we will be ready to resume football activities soon. We will continue to follow prevention and testing protocols and look forward to our Big 12 Conference opener against Iowa State on September 26.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby stated numerous times when speaking to the media that there would be interruptions. What was unsure were how they would determine when to postpone or cancel a game.

KVUE reporter Jake Garcia tweeted out the thresholds for football cancellations.

TCU is set to visit Austin on Oct. 3 in the Longhorns Big 12 home opener. The Frogs defeated Texas last season in Fort Worth 37-27.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: SMU Mustangs Offense 3 Things To Know

– The SMU offense that was good under head coach Sonny Dykes ramped things up a bit last year. QB Shane Buechele came over from Texas and rocked the passing attack from the start, the receiving corps was terrific, and Xavier Jones was a machine for the ground attack. A whole slew of the key parts are gone, but nothing stops. The system is sound, the coaching staff knows how to generate production, and Buechele is back.

– The passing attack went from 3,260 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2019 to 4,017 yards and 35 scores last year. There were more big plays downfield, but star target James Proche is now gone after making 204 grabs with 27 scores over the last two seasons. However, Reggie Roberson is back after missing the second half of last year with a foot injury, and tight end Kylen Granson has all-star talent coming off a 43-catch, 721-yard, nine-touchdown season. The air show continues, and it might have to do more, because …

Xavier Jones and Ke’Mon Freeman are gone from the backfield. The two combined for close to 1,800 rushing yards with Jones scoring 23 touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore TJ McDaniel should be the next man up, but it’s an all-underclassmen running back group that will likely operate in a rotation for a bit.

On the plus side, the offensive line should be terrific. Four starters are expected back, starting with left tackle Jaylon Thomas. Give credit to the offensive system that gets the ball out of the quarterback’s hands in a hurry, but also give some love to a line that was just that good, allowing the fewest sacks in the conference.
