Every NFL draft pick coached by James Franklin

Zac Stacy, Jordan Matthews, Saquon Barkley, Micah Parsons, and every other NFL draft pick who played for James Franklin.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] got his first head coaching opportunity with Vanderbilt after the 2010 season despite previously being the head coach-in-waiting at Maryland. The Commodores are not necessarily known for producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent, but Vanderbilt managed to send a few players off to the next level by way of the NFL draft under the guidance of Franklin, who has experience as an assistant coach in the NFL.

In the years Franklin was the head coach at Vanderbilt, from 2011 through 2013, Vanderbilt had seven players drafted. And a few more who would go on to be drafted later on out of Vanderbilt were brought into the program initially by Franklin and his staff. The seven players drafted from Vanderbilt from Franklin’s three seasons with the program is the most draft picks from Vanderbilt in a three-year span in school history since 1957-1969 saw 11 players selected by NFL teams, in the days of a draft lasting at least 20 rounds.

Since arriving at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has seen a growing number of his players go on to be drafted by NFL franchises, including an offensive rookie of the year in running back [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag] in 2018 and a defensive rookie of the year in linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] in 2021.

Here is a look at every player drafted by an NFL team that had James Franklin as a head coach in their last game before being drafted, beginning with Franklin’s time at Vanderbilt.

And once you are done checking out this list, here is a list of every Penn State player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

Every Penn State player in the XFL in 2023

Looking for every Penn State player on an XFL roster in 2023? Here they are.

As the curtain closes on the NFL’s 2022 season with the crowning of a Super Bowl champion, the football calendar moves next to the start of the XFL regular season. The XFL is back under new leadership headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and the latest attempt to inject new life into the XFL brand kicks things off on Saturday, February 18.

When the new XFL season begins, there will be some familiar names for Penn State fans to keep track of. When the league kicks off, there will be five former Nittany Lions scattered across the league’s eight teams.

Former wide receiver [autotag]Saeed Blacknall[/autotag] will not be on one of those rosters despite previously being profiled by the league in an effort to showcase some players leading up to the start of the season. Blacknall was on the roster for the Vegas Vipers, but he did not appear on the team’s official roster shared by the league in an Instagram post a week and a half prior to the first games being played. But the Vipers do have a former Nittany Lion on the roster looking to make an impact this spring.

Here is a summary of where each former Penn State player is in the XFL and where they have been since their final days in a Penn State uniform.

WATCH: Former Penn State QB breaks down replay of former PSU DL in USFL broadcast

The USFL officially kicked off a new era of spring football this weekend, and those paying attention to Sunday’s game between the New Orleans Breakers and Philadelphia Stars may have seen some familiar names. In the broadcast booth for USA’s coverage of the game was former Penn State quarterback [autotag]Michael Robinson[/autotag], who has enjoyed a nice career in sports media since his playing days came to an end in the NFL. But one player looking to keep his career going, [autotag]Shareef Miller[/autotag], was seen making a nice defensive play in the backfield for New Orleans.

And Robinson was more than happy to break down the play and give a little shoutout to the alma mater.

Miller had 100 career tackles during his time at Penn State, between 2015 and 2018. Miller was a three-star recruit in Penn State’s Class of 2015, and he finished his career with two solid back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018 with 5.5 sacks and 7.5 sacks, respectively.

Miller went on to be a fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2019 NFL draft. After just one season, Miller was waived by the Eagles just before the start of the 2020 season. He was quickly signed by the Carolina Panthers and spent one season with the team before being waived once again and returning to the Eagles as a practice squad member. Miller was released again by the Eagles in December 2020, and he made a couple more quick stops with NFL franchises in Arizona and Atlanta before being drafted by the New Orleans Breakers in the inaugural USFL draft.

Eagles dead cap space: 48 current or former players account for over $62 million

Philadelphia Eagles dead cap space: 48 current or former players account for over $62 million

The Philadelphia Eagles had 6 injured or absent players accounting for more than $20 million in salary-cap space.

That’s not even the worst of it, as the Eagles also have 48 players, some of who are still on the roster, accounting for over $62 million in dead salary cap space.

The Eagles will carry the largest dead money cap hit in NFL history this season after the team traded Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.

Philadelphia’s salary cap situation was among the worst in the league after years of pushing back contracts, void years, and restructures.

Wentz’s isn’t the only former Eagle on the books for 2021 and we’ve presented all the dead money cap hits for Philadelphia this season per Over The Cap, and Spotrac.

Former Nittany Lion Shareef Miller signs with new NFL team

Former Penn State defensive lineman Shareef Miller has signed with his fourth NFL team.

Former Penn State defensive lineman Shareef Miller has made a few stops in his young NFL career. The latest stop in his NFL journey will come with the Atlanta Falcons, who signed Miller to a contract on Thursday.

Miller was one of four free-agent signings confirmed by the NFC South franchise on Thursday. The Falcons are the fourth different NF franchise Miller has been a part of since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Miller will have to earn his spot on the Falcons roster. Sticking on an NF roster for too long has been a hurdle for him in the NFL so far. After being drafted in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, Miller was waived by the Eagles prior to the start of the 2020 season. He was picked up by the Carolina Panthers shortly after that, but his time with the Panthers lasted just about a month before Carolina made some roster moves and waived him.

Miller returned to the Eagles as a practice squad player for the remainder of the 2020 season, and the Arizona Cardinals signed Miller to a reserve contract. Arizona waived Miller earlier this month, allowing him to once again test the free-agent waters that have now taken him to Atlanta.

Miller played in 40 games for Penn State from his redshirt freshman season of 2015 through his junior year of 2017. In those games, Miller started 25 games his last two years in Happy Valley. Miller left Penn State with 100 career tackles and 14.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Falcons announce four free-agent signings

Jeff Badet, George Obinna, John Atkins, and Shareef Miller are announced by the Atlanta Falcons as free-agent signings.

Thursday morning, the Falcons added four free agents to further provide depth before training camp. Defensive linemen John Atkins, Shareef Miller, George Obinna and wide receiver Jeff Badet have been signed, the team announced.

The biggest name on this list is the former Georgia Bulldog, John Atkins. Originally drafted by the New England Patriots in 2018, Atkins would go on to play for the Detroit Lions in 2018 and 2019. For his career, Atkins has accumulated nine total QB pressures and 14 tackles.

These four signings will also not count against the 51-player cap. To make room, the Falcons were forced to part ways with Greg Dotch, Alani Pututau, Jeff Holland and Eli Ankou.

Steelers host 3 players for tryouts, including former Penn State DE

Pittsburgh hosted three players for visits, including center and tackle positions impacted by Reserve/COVID-19 list and OLB depth.

Two days after his release from the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, former Penn State defensive end Shareef Miller found himself on the other side of Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh.

A fourth-round selection by the Eagles in 2019, Miller was active for just two games his rookie year — two snaps on special teams. He was released before the start of the 2020 season and spent some time with the Carolina Panthers before being re-signed to the Eagles practice squad.

While Miller was a defensive end for the Eagles, his 6’4, 255-lb. frame and pass rush skills project him as an outside linebacker in Pittsburgh. The team needs reinforcements after losing Bud Dupree to a torn ACL in Wednesday’s game.

As a Nittany Lion, Miller played in 40 games and recorded 100 tackles (58 solo), with 31.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two recovered fumbles.

Pittsburgh also brought in former Texas center Zach Shackelford and former Syracuse offensive tackle Cody Conway, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Conway signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans before bouncing around the league with the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. Shackelford signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft. He was released on cut-down day.

With the Shackelford tryout, the Steelers must anticipate that center Maurkice Pouncey will be out for some time. He was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list before kickoff on Wednesday.

Philadelphia Eagles release DE Shareef Miller from the practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles are moving on from another hometown kid, releasing former Penn State defensive end Shareef Miller from the practice squad.

Miller was a fourth-round pick of Philadelphia during the 2019 NFL Draft but was waived by the Eagles prior to the start of the regular season and picked up by the Panthers.

The Panthers waived Miller after he was inactive for each of the first three games this season to clear roster space and he returned to the Eagles a few weeks later.

Philadelphia Eagles sign DE Shareef Miller to the practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles have added defensive end, Shareef Miller, to the practice squad

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially added defensive end, Shareef Miller, to the 16 man practice squad one day after Tom Pelissero reported that the move would happen.

Miller was a fourth-round pick of Philadelphia during the 2019 NFL Draft but was waived by the Eagles prior to the start of the regular season and picked up by the Panthers.

The Panthers waived Miller after he was inactive for each of the first three games this season to clear roster space for Eli Apple’s (ankle/foot) return to the lineup.
