Key matchups for Panthers vs. Buccaneers in Week 18

Between his last two games against the Panthers, Buccaneers WR Mike Evans has totaled 17 receptions for 369 yards and four touchdowns.

Can the 2-14 Carolina Panthers match up against the playoff-hopeful Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s regular-season finale?

Here are three key battles that’ll help determine who comes out on top, and possibly who comes out with the NFC South, in Week 18:

Bucs OLB Shaquil Barrett selected for 2023 Ed Block Courage Award

Barrett was nominated for the award by his teammates for showcasing professionalism, strength and dedication.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher Shaquil Barrett has been a huge contributor on the field, but the team has voted to give him an award that commemorates his characteristics off of the field, too.

The rest of the team voted for Barrett as their 2023-24 recipient for the Ed Block Courage Award. According to the team, the award is meant to exemplify those who exhibit “professionalism, strength, dedication, and serve as community ambassadors.” Based on those qualities, Barrett is certainly a worthy candidate.

Barrett showed all these qualities after his offseason. He was initially recovering from an Achilles injury he suffered in 2022, and during that offseason, his daughter Arrayah Barrett died tragically at two years old after an accident at the family pool. Barrett not only recovered from the Achilles injury, but he also founded the Arrayah Hope Foundation which strives to offer free swim lessons to kids in Tampa and in Denver, Colorado, where he played before coming to the Bucs.

On the field, Barrett has been a notable presence for the Bucs. Aside from contributing to a Super Bowl victory, Barrett has amassed 186 solo tackles, 49 sacks, two fumble recoveries and four interceptions in 75 games for Tampa Bay.

Barrett will be honored at the 46th Annual Ed Block Courage Awards on April 1.

Final Week 17 Bucs Injury Report: Three players ruled out

The Bucs will be down two defensive starters and a tight end for Sunday’s matchup.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will officially be without three players when they face off against the New Orleans Saints at home in Week 17.

The team’s injury report on Friday revealed that every player who did not participate for three straight days — cornerback Carlton Davis, edge rusher Shaquil Barrett and tight end Ko Kieft — will not play. Wideout Rakim Jarrett and defensive tackle Mike Greene were full participants, but they still were not able to make it off of the Injured Reserve list before Sunday’s matchup.

As a result of Barrett’s injury, both Anthony Nelson and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka will see more reps at edge rusher. Head coach Todd Bowles did not specify which player would get the most of those reps.

On New Orleans’ side, safety Lonnie Johnson and tackle Ryan Ramczyk are both ruled out. The Saints have five other players questionable, with two of them — including running back Alvin Kamara — added late due to illness.

Tampa Bay is without two starters on final Saints-Bucs injury report

Tampa Bay is without two starters on final Saints-Bucs injury report ahead of Week 17’s matchup

The New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released the final injury report ahead of their Week 17 matchup.

Few surprises on the report for the Saints, with Ryan Ramczyk and Lonnie Johnson being the only two players listed out. Jordan Howden was upgraded to a full participant in practice on Friday. Alvin Kamara made his first appearance on the injury report this week as he missed practice on Friday with an illness.

An interesting story to watch will be the punter situation for New Orleans. Like Kamara, Lou Hedley missed practice on Friday with an illness and was listed as questionable. Hedley is the team’s only punter and Blake Grupe does not have punting experience.

For the Buccaneers, five players are listed as out for this game. Noteworthy abscesses will be star pass rusher Shaquil Barrett and starting cornerback Carlton Davis. Tight end Ko Kieft, wide receiver Rakim Jarrett and defensive tackle Mike Greene are also listed as out. Wide receiver Chris Godwin returned to practice on Friday and looks good to go for Sunday’s matchup.

Here is the full injury report for this week:

Ryan Ramczyk (knee) misses another practice on Saints-Bucs injury report

Ryan Ramczyk (knee) misses another practice on the updated Saints-Bucs injury report:

There isn’t much good news on Thursday’s update for the New Orleans Saints injury report. While rookie safety Jordan Howden (illness) returned to practice after resting on Wednesday, starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (knee) and veteran safety Lonnie Johnson (knee) were still missing. It isn’t looking good for either of them as we approach Sunday’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who could be without top defenders Carlton Davis (concussion) and Shaquil Barrett (groin).

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that several young draft picks are practicing on a limited basis for the Saints after having missed some time with injuries. Rookies Isaiah Foskey (quadricep) and Kendre Miller (ankle) have both been active this week, and defensive end Payton Turner (toe) is progressing well in his return from injured reserve. Win or lose, it would be great to see something positive from the three of them down the stretch.

Here’s a quick look at Thursday’s injury report from both teams:

The worst defensive players in Tampa Bay’s win over Atlanta, per PFF

The defensive line didn’t come out well in PFF’s Week 14 grades for Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense did enough to win on Sunday, but it wasn’t the prettiest way to secure a victory.

The team gave up 25 points in its 29-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons, allowing quarterback Desmond Ridder to throw for 347 yards in the process. The team did well in getting two turnovers, but a major point of concern was its inability to generate pressure on the line — the one strip sack turnover the Bucs had came at the hands of their safety, Antoine Winfield Jr. Pro Football Focus released their grades for every Bucs player that took snaps on Sunday, and defensive linemen didn’t come out unscathed.

Here are the five lowest-graded players by PFF from their Week 14 Bucs grades:
