Carolina Panthers 53-man roster projection: Final cuts edition

Who’s staying in and who’s going out? Here are our projections for the Panthers’ initial 53-man roster.

Bloody Tuesday is upon us and the Carolina Panthers have some cleaning up to do. So who stays and who goes as they cut down their personnel before that 4 p.m. ET deadline in a few days?

Here are our projections for the team’s initial 53-man roster for the 2021 regular season.

Panthers highlights: LB Frankie Luvu breaks out the ‘Peanut Punch’

Panthers LB Frankie Luvu channeled his inner Charles Tillman on the forced fumble.

It’s been six years (wow, six?!?!) since we’ve seen cornerback Charles Tillman play for the Carolina Panthers. That, however, doesn’t mean his impact can’t still be felt by the franchise.

Linebacker Frankie Luvu was feeling that big Tillman energy at the end of the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. After a 9-yard catch by receiver Josh Oliver, Luvu broke out the ol’ “Peanut Punch” to force a fumble in the red zone.

The loose ball was recovered by safety Sean Chandler at the Carolina 12-yard line, halting an 11-play, 59-yard drive.

Luvu has shined all week through joint practices with Baltimore and carried that energy (his own and the big Tillman energy) onto the field tonight.

4 takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 preseason loss to Colts

If you were looking for some excitement from the Carolina Panthers rookies, then you couldn’t have been disappointed this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers (well, some of them, anyway) finally cracked an actual field of play here in 2021. And even in an exhibition matchup with every one of their projected starters not even dressing, there were a handful of developments to shed a light on.

Here are four takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Report: Panthers placing DB Juston Burris on injured reserve

The bad injury news keeps coming for the Carolina Panthers.

The bad injury news keeps coming for the Carolina Panthers.

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, defensive back Juston Burris is being placed on the injured reserve list with a rib injury. On the bright side, it’s not expected to end his 2020 season.

This news was expected, as we saw Burris being carted off the field late in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

The team already has a potential replacement lined up, with the New York Post reporting that Carolina is poaching safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad.

In related news, the Panthers are not expected to activate running back Christian McCaffrey off the IR list this week, per Tom Pelissero at NFL Network.

With a short week against the Falcons coming up, we likely won’t see him back on the field until Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Report: Panthers signing safety off Giants practice squad

To fill that hole, the Panthers are signing safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad, according to a report by Ryan Dunleavy.

The Panthers are shorthanded at a few positions due to injuries and the pandemic. Two offensive linemen (Tyler Larsen and Michael Schofield) are currently on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. Carolina is also down a man at safety after Juston Burris suffered an injury on Sunday against the Bears. While we don’t know exactly what happened, it was serious enough for Burris to be carted off the field so we can assume he’ll be out for a while.

To fill that hole, the Panthers are signing safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad, according to a report by Ryan Dunleavy.

Chandler (six-foot, 195 pounds) played for coach Matt Rhule at Temple, where he posted 10 interceptions and 13.5 tackles for a loss in 48 games.

After college, he went undrafted and was first signed by the Giants in 2018. He’s been a core special teams contributor for them over the last three seasons, totaling 531 snaps there as opposed to 174 on defense.

Panthers sign safety Sean Chandler off Giants’ practice squad

The Carolina Panthers have signed safety Sean Chandler off of the New York Giants’ practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have signed safety Sean Chandler off of the New York Giants’ practice squad, reuniting him with his college coach, Matt Rhule.

Chandler had spent the 2020 season on and off the Giants’ practice squad and had also been protected several times. However, on a short week with moves limited, Chandler was vulnerable to be signed and has now been plucked.

After going undrafted out of Temple in the 2018 NFL Draft, Chandler signed with the Giants as a rookie free agent and had remained with the team until Tuesday.

In two-plus seasons, Chandler appeared in 32 games for the Giants, recording 26 tackles (20 solo, one for a loss), two fumble recoveries, one sack and one pass defensed.

In three games this season, Chandler recorded just one tackle and was primarily used on special teams.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Trent Harris, who had been promoted to the Giants’ active roster in Week 6, has reverted back to the practice squad.

The New York Giants have made a habit out of shuffling their practice squad a time or two per week and that trend continued on Tuesday.

Mere days after promoting him to their active roster, the Giants have waived safety Sean Chandler. He is expected to be re-signed to their practice squad.

Replacing Chandler on the 53-man roster is tight end Eric Tomlinson, who was promoted from the team’s practice squad.

This move is a complete 180 from last week when Tomlinson had his contract terminated so that Chandler could be promoted to the active roster to provide depth in Jabrill Peppers’ (ankle) absence.

In a 17-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4, Chandler was on the field for 16 special teams snaps (70%). In total, Chandler has appeared in three games for the Giants this season and has registered one tackle.

Tomlinson has appeared in just one game for the Giants this season, taking two offensive snaps and 11 special teams snaps, recording one tackle.

The New York Giants filed the protections of four practice squad players with the NFL on Tuesday, including safety Sean Chandler.

In addition to Chandler, the Giants also protected long snapper Carson Tinker, kicker/punter Ryan Santoso and rookie defensive back Chris Williamson.

Chandler originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Temple in 2018 and has appeared in 31 games for the team.

Tinker was signed in early September and waived as a part of final cuts before being added to the practice squad, while Santoso was signed to the practice squad on September 6.

Williamson was a seventh-round pick of the Giants in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Giants injury report: Adrian Colbert doubtful vs. 49ers

New York Giants safety Adrian Colbert (quad) is doubtful against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.

The New York Giants took the field for their final full practice ahead of a Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers and other than the obvious missing pieces, appeared relatively healthy.

Most active players were participating in practice, including rookie linebacker Carter Coughlin (hamstring) and safeties Sean Chandler (hamstring) and Adrian Colbert (quad).

“He’s a young player, so we’re trying to look at him in a couple different positions. Obviously, he has roles for us in the kicking game. He played mostly outside linebacker through camp,” head coach Joe Judge said of Coughlin. “There were some discussions early in training camp about looking at him inside. We’ve had the opportunity to do that the last few weeks. He’s made some progress there. The more versatility he has playing inside and outside really adds to our depth at the games.”

Coughlin and Chandler finished the week strong, fully participating on both Thursday and Friday, while Colbert remained limited.

That is in stark contrast to the 49ers, who are completely riddled with injury and officially ruled quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), running backs Tevin Coleman (knee) and Raheem Mostert (knee), and defensive end Dee Ford (back) out before even taking the field for their final practice of the week.

Tight end George Kittle (knee) has also been ruled out.

Officially, the Giants have ruled Colbert as doubtful and defensive back Brandon Williams (groin), who was a Friday addition to the injury report, as questionable.

Neither Chandler nor Coughlin received a designation.

Giants injury report: Adrian Colbert remains limited

New York Giants S Adrian Colbert remains limited on the team’s Thursday injury report ahead of a Week 3 game vs. the San Francisco 49ers.

The New York Giants were back at work on Thursday preparing for a Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers, who have endured some of the worst injury luck of any team in the NFL.

The Giants, of course, have not been spared that bug either, losing wide receiver Sterling Shepard (toe) for several weeks and superstar running back Saquon Barkley (knee) for the year.

The good news is that unlike the 49ers, who are expected to be without multiple starters on Sunday, the Giants’ active roster is relatively healthy. And as was the case on Wednesday, everyone was participating in practice on at least a limited basis.

It appears that barring a setback, rookie linebacker Carter Coughlin will be a go against San Francisco, while the status of veteran safety Adrian Colbert remain somewhat uncertain.

Colbert was inactive in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.

Full participation: LB Carter Coughlin (hamstring), S Sean Chandler (hamstring)

Limited participation: S Adrian Colbert (quad)

Did not participate: None
