Packers scrimmage at Lambeau Field: Live news and updates

The Packers will hold a scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Follow along for news, notes and observations from reporters at practice.

The Green Bay Packers will hold a scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field. Coach Matt LaFleur wants a “game-like” environment, with unscripted sessions, players in uniform, coaches in headsets and officials on the field.

Follow along below for live updates from the scrimmage:

– Coach Matt LaFleur on the scrimmage:

“It’s going to be our closest opportunity to a game-like experience. We’re going to have the guys in their uniforms. It’s going to be all unscripted. We’re going to start off, kind of similar to how we do a normal practice, in terms of a quick walkthrough, we’ll get into our stretch, we’ll have some individual time and then we’ll go into one-on-ones. And then from there on out, it’s all going to be scrimmage situation.

“Hopefully, we can get into some situational ball that happens naturally throughout the course of a game. Our coaches will be up in the press box. We’ll have our headsets on. We’re going to have the tablets, the NFL is coming in here to help us with typical game-day procedures. We’ll have some officials. So I’m really excited to see how our guys respond to that situation. Just hear the call, so they can go out there and play fast. Just really excited for that opportunity for these guys.”

Notable stats from Saturday’s Dolphins scrimmage

Notable stats from Saturday’s Dolphins scrimmage

The Miami Dolphins scrimmaged on Saturday, offering the best look yet at how this new-look Miami Dolphins squad is positioned to perform once the team is thrust into a game situation and forced to play for real. There were plenty of ups and downs on both sides of the football, but also some significant showings that should provide important clues for what is to come.

How did the Dolphins’ notable players perform? Here are some key statistics from yesterday’s scrimmage.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick did not participate after learning of the passing of his mother on Saturday morning. That left just young QBs Josh Rosen and Tua Tagovailoa to commandeer the reps.

Rosen was unofficially 11-24 passing for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tagavailoa, alternatively was 13-23 for 119 yards, no scores and one interception. Tagovailoa also ran once for an eight yard gain.

On the ground, the Dolphins had three running backs credited with carries on the day. Former San Francisco 49er Matt Breida led the team in yardage, he had had seven carries for 33 yards. Former Chicago Bear & Philadelphia Eagle Jordan Howard had the largest workload, logging nine carries for 12 yards. Second year pro Myles Gaskin offered four carries for 10.

In the passing game, young receiver Isaiah Ford stuffed the box score the most, logging five receptions for 72 yards. One of the stars of the day was young rookie offensive weapon Malcolm Perry — he continues to flash and make big plays every day at camp. Perry hauled in a 50+ yard bomb from Rosen for the biggest chunk play of the day and finished with two receptions for 62 yards. Other notable performers included:

  • WR Preston Williams: 3 receptions – 24 yards
  • TE Mike Gesicki:  3 receptions – 15 yards
  • WR Ricardo Louis: 3 receptions – 21 yards
  • WR Chester Rogers: 2 receptions – 25 yards
  • Star receiver DeVante Parker did not participate with a nagging minor injury

Defensively, Miami tagged each quarterback for an interception. Safety Eric Rowe plucked a pass intended for Mike Gesicki in tight man coverage.

Packers will hold scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Sunday

The Packers will get an opportunity to scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur will have his team in uniform for an intra-squad scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

With no preseason games this year, LaFleur wanted to create an opportunity for something resembling a typical gameday environment before the Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 on Sept. 13.

“It’s going to be our closest opportunity to a game-like experience. We’re going to have the guys in their uniforms. It’s going to be all unscripted,” LaFleur said after practice on Saturday.

The plan is for the team to go through a typical practice-like schedule – including warmups and individual position work – before the scrimmage portion begins.

“We’re going to start off, kind of similar to how we do a normal practice, in terms of a quick walkthrough, we’ll get into our stretch, we’ll have some individual time and then we’ll go into one-on-ones. And then from there on out, it’s all going to be scrimmage situation,” LaFleur said.

The hope is that the scrimmage environment at Lambeau Field will present LaFleur and the Packers with a range of different situations, providing valuable experience for players and important evaluation opportunities for the coaches and personnel staff.

LaFleur is planning to have the entire scrimmage play out like a typical game, with coaches communicating through headsets and officials on the field. Also, the scrimmage will be unscripted, creating an extra level of stress on the players and the entire operation.

“Hopefully, we can get into some situational ball that happens naturally throughout the course of a game,” LaFleur said. “Our coaches will be up in the press box.

The Packers are planning to transition to a regular-season practice schedule starting next week.

Saints take a cautious approach in first full-contact scrimmage

The New Orleans Saints gave many veteran players the day off in their first full-contact scrimmage at training camp, some due to injuries.

[jwplayer p8EALkhf-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints have been practicing in pads and helmets for two weeks, so on Friday they raised the tempo with their first full-contact session in an organized scrimmage. But they weren’t at full strength, with a number of starters and role players sitting out. The full list, per reporters on the scene:

  • DE Marcus Davenport
  • FS Malcolm Jenkins
  • LB Zack Baun
  • LB Anthony Chickillo
  • OL Andrus Peat
  • OL Cesar Ruiz
  • OL Ryan Ramczyk
  • RB Alvin Kamara
  • RB Ty Montgomery

You’ll notice that includes three of the five starting offensive linemen, as well as Kamara, the team’s second-best pass target, and each of their top two rookie draft picks.

Some of those players are managing injuries; Saints coach Sean Payton said that Ruiz and Jenkins are expected to return to action soon, while Kamara missed time earlier this week with a stomach virus. Montgomery was rattled on a hit in Thursday’s practice but was able to finish the session. Baun exited practice back on Monday, having pulled up after chasing down Taysom Hill. Ramczyk has been getting a lot of veteran’s rest during camp after undergoing a knee scope early in the offseason.

So this probably isn’t a lot to worry about. None of these injury situations appear to be serious, and the Saints still have more than two weeks to go until their season opener. Many of these players are known quantities, so it makes sense to spare them from unnecessary hits in a full-contact practice session. But the Saints are notorious when it comes to keeping medical details close to their vest, so stay tuned for updates.

Hurricane Laura 2020: Texans scrimmage to be held at NRG Stadium

The Houston Texans will move forward with their planned training camp scrimmage at NRG Stadium Thursday evening.

The Houston Texans are sticking to their original plan and will have scrimmage at NRG Stadium Thursday night.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans will have their scrimmage at their home venue after taking precautions due to the effects of Hurricane Laura, which swept through southeast Texas and upward into northwest Louisiana Thursday morning.

The scrimmage was up in the air on Wednesday as the club sent their staff and personnel home to work virtually with NRG Stadium shutdown at 2:30 p.m. that day.

Having the scrimmage on Thursday is important, according to coach and general manager Bill O’Brien, in getting the team ready for the regular season.

“I think it’s just that, I think you have to, without preseason games, in my opinion just for our football team, what’s best for our team is to have two of these scrimmages,” O’Brien told reporters on Aug. 25. “At least one of these in full pads where we warm up like a game, we treat it as much like a game as we possibly can. Coaches in the press box and kind of go through all that. Basically, the logistics of a game.”

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly will be calling plays in to quarterback Deshaun Watson, and first-year defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will be relaying plays to inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney. All of these components are key to getting Houston ready for their Sept. 10 opener at the Kansas City Chiefs.

Matt Patricia says Lions practices will get more ‘intense, competitive’ this weekend

The Lions would have played their third preseason game Thursday night in Miami

Don’t call it a scrimmage. Lions head coach Matt Patricia was careful to avoid that word when asked if his team would have a controlled scrimmage this weekend or before training camp ends.

Patricia wouldn’t say if the Lions would hold what most of us would call a scrimmage, or give exact details on what he had planned. But in his Thursday pre-practice Zoom session with reporters, Patricia indicated things will ramp up in intensity and competitiveness over the next few days in lieu of the traditional third preseason game, which would have been Thursday night in Miami.

“Obviously working into this week, which is – let’s call it what would be Preseason Game No. 3 Week,” Patricia said. “This is a week where we’re building towards the end of the week for a little bit more of an intense, competitive practice here this weekend. So we’re looking forward to that as long as, again we take it as it comes here with injuries and the health of the players.”

Patricia continued,

“But if we stay on track with that, we try to get some really good competition this weekend, and then mid-next week will be another target point for us so that it’s far enough away from the start of the season, but also we’ll get enough of an evaluation whether it’s front-end evaluation of the roster or back-end evaluation of the roster. We want to make sure we have time to do that.”

The Lions did take to the practice field on Thursday in Allen Park.

Hurricane Laura 2020: Will it affect the Houston Texans scrimmage?

Hurricane Laura is set to make landfall late Wednesday night, early Thursday morning. Will it impact the Houston Texans’ scrimmage on Thursday?

The Houston Texans plan to have their scrimmage for Thursday, although Hurricane Laura could have a say in the matter.

The Category 3 hurricane had sustained winds of 115 mph as of 7:00 a.m. with a potential for 140 mph later Wednesday. Laura is expected to be a Category 4 when it makes landfall late Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.

Currently, coach and general manager Bill O’Brien and executive vice president Jack Easterby are looking at two different models on Laura’s projections.

“Now I’m looking at a European model and I’m looking at this other model and I’m like which model do you, I don’t even — one looks like it’s headed toward Louisiana and we’re on the west of it,” O’Brien said.

If Laura continues with a more easterly path as it relates to Houston, then the city should not feel any effects from the storm.

O’Brien and Easterby are working with team president Jamey Rootes and others to ensure they make the safest, smartest decision.

“We’re on top of it and we’ll make a call when we have to make the call,” said O’Brien. “I think this one is different than (Hurricane) Harvey, right.”

The concern with Laura, according to O’Brien is the wind, not the flooding, as was the case with Harvey in August of 2017. The wind factor could have an impact on the team’s practice bubble at Houston Methodist Training Center if Laura indeed moves that far west.

Branden Jackson returns to Seahawks facility after injury scare

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson was able to return to the team facility after the injury scare during the scrimmage on Saturday.

The Seattle Seahawks got a little bit of good news over the last few days with the return of defensive end Branden Jackson. Jackson was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance on Saturday after losing consciousness following a collision with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi.

Coach Pete Carroll was able to provide an update on Jackson’s situation during his Zoom press conference with reporters.

“He’s back in the building and with us today, was at meetings today,” Carroll said. “We’ve got to check him out and make sure that we understand that nothing was really injured – he’s just recovering from such a big smack, you know that he got nailed with so we’ll see what that means.”

Carroll did say that Jackson will be further evaluated to make sure there is no structural damage and will likely sit out practice for at least the next couple of days.

Seahawks end scrimmage after DE Branden Jackson suffers head injury

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson suffered a head injury during the team’s mock game at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.

The Seattle Seahawks held a mock game at CenturyLink Field on Saturday to replicate the missed preseason and adjust to the stadium without fans. However, the scrimmage was cut short when defensive end Branden Jackson collided with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and suffered a head injury, rendering him unconscious on the field.

The team’s medical staff attended to Jackson on site but he was ultimately taken away in an ambulance to the hospital.

“I didn’t catch the replay but he hit heads I think with Cedric and it might have caught him in the chin with his helmet, and it was like a knockout punch is what it was,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters. “So we took all the precautions and took care of him. He had movement and all that kind of stuff, but we still needed to do the right thing and totally take care of him until we know more.”

Carroll ended the practice immediately following Jackson’s injury.

“I didn’t think it was right to try to get everybody cranked back up again and go back out,” Carroll continued. “We didn’t need to do that but we had gotten enough done. We’ll take the plays that we got and what we learned from it. We accomplished the things we needed to accomplish coming to the stadium.”
