Doctors recommended Branden Jackson not play this season to be safe

To prevent further injury to his neck, the Seahawks’ doctors recommended defensive end Branden Jackson sit out the season.

The Seattle Seahawks placed defensive end Branden Jackson on injured reserve Sunday after he gave the team quite the scare during the first mock game of the year at CenturyLink Field.

Jackson collided with a teammate during the scrimmage and was knocked unconscious for a brief time before being carted off to an ambulance. Thankfully, Jackson was able to return to the team meetings the following day.

Coach Pete Carroll, at the time, was unsure of any long-term damage as a result of the injury, but the team has decided to play it safe this year.

“It’s a situation where (doctors) don’t recommend him playing this season,” Carroll told reporters Sunday afternoon. “He really came out of that episode OK, but the testing did show him that he had a physical trait that they want to protect, so everybody has been convinced that the best thing to do is for him not to play this year. I don’t know that that’s forever, but I do know for right now. He’s not injured right now, but he’s susceptible — it’s similar to situations a couple of our other guys have had in the past. We’re erring on the side of long-term health and taking care of our guys.”

Carroll compared Jackson’s situation to that of Kam Chancellor and Cliff Avril, both of whom retired because of neck injuries. Carroll is hopeful that Jackson could return in the future.

“He is a great team guy, we love him on our team, and he’s got such spirit,” Carroll said. “He’s got great versatility too in his play, but he’s just been such a great guy in this locker room. We’re going to miss him. I asked him to stay around as long as he wants to be with us all along, and I hope he’ll be able to do that.”

Seahawks place Branden Jackson on injured reserve, sign Pita Taumoepenu

The Seattle Seahawks have placed defensive end Branden Jackson on the injured reserve and signed Pita Taumoepenu to his place on the roster.

The Seattle Seahawks pulled off a couple of roster moves Sunday afternoon before the team’s final scrimmage of the summer. Seattle placed defensive end Branden Jackson on the injured reserve and signed defensive end Pita Taumoepenu to take his place on the active roster.

Jackson was carted off the field during the Seahawks’ first mock game at CenturyLink Field but was able to return to the team facility the following day.

“There’s some concerns that they’re going to check out to make sure we’re really clear on, so it’s going to take us little bit of time,” Carroll had said of Jackson’s status at the time.

“We’re going to be very deliberate about taking time,” Carroll continued. “Any time you get hit in the head like that, we’ve got to make sure we take all of the time that it takes and all of the considerations. There’s a lot of stuff we’re going to check him out on. We want to make sure he’s OK.”

Taumoepenu spent part of last year on Seattle’s practice squad. He was present at Sunday’s scrimmage, sporting jersey No. 59.

The Seahawks also confirmed the signing of wide receiver Paul Richardson.

Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson had quite the scare over the weekend when he was knocked unconscious during Seattle’s mock game at CenturyLink Field.

While Jackson was carted off the field and taken to the hospital straight from the scrimmage, he was able to return to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center to start the work week and attend the team meetings.

Coach Pete Carroll did tell reporters, however, that Jackson would be undergoing further testing just to be on the safe side.

“There’s some concerns that they’re going to check out to make sure we’re really clear on, so it’s going to take us little bit of time,” Carroll said via Zoom on Monday. “We’re going to be very deliberate about taking time. Any time you get hit in the head like that, we’ve got to make sure we take all of the time that it takes and all of the considerations. There’s a lot of stuff we’re going to check him out on. We want to make sure he’s OK.”

Jackson will sit out practice for the next few days while he is monitored closely.

Branden Jackson returns to Seahawks facility after injury scare

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson was able to return to the team facility after the injury scare during the scrimmage on Saturday.

The Seattle Seahawks got a little bit of good news over the last few days with the return of defensive end Branden Jackson. Jackson was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance on Saturday after losing consciousness following a collision with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi.

Coach Pete Carroll was able to provide an update on Jackson’s situation during his Zoom press conference with reporters.

“He’s back in the building and with us today, was at meetings today,” Carroll said. “We’ve got to check him out and make sure that we understand that nothing was really injured – he’s just recovering from such a big smack, you know that he got nailed with so we’ll see what that means.”

Carroll did say that Jackson will be further evaluated to make sure there is no structural damage and will likely sit out practice for at least the next couple of days.

Seahawks cut mock game short after scary injury to DE Branden Jackson

The Seahawks cut a mock game short after a scary injury to DE Branden Jackson.

A scary moment hit the Seattle Seahawks Saturday. The team was having a mock game when defensive end Branden Jackson was knocked out.

Jackson’s helmet collided with that of offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi at the line of scrimmage. Jackson fell to the turf and remained there for several minutes before the team’s medical staff strapped him onto a backboard, and loaded him into an ambulance.

“He hit heads with Cedric and might have caught him in the chin with his helmet and it was like a knockout punch, is what it was,” coach Pete Carroll said. “So we took all of the precautions and took care of him, and he had movement and all that kind of stuff. But we still needed to do the right thing and totally take care of him until we know more.”

“I’m praying that he’ll be OK.” quarterback Russell Wilson said, “I believe he’ll be OK, it sounds like.”

The 27-year-old Jackson is entering his fifth NFL season. He went undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2016, spending his rookie season with the Raiders and the past three with Seattle. He played in 15 games last year with 20 tackles and two sacks, each career highs.

Seahawks end scrimmage after DE Branden Jackson suffers head injury

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson suffered a head injury during the team’s mock game at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.

The Seattle Seahawks held a mock game at CenturyLink Field on Saturday to replicate the missed preseason and adjust to the stadium without fans. However, the scrimmage was cut short when defensive end Branden Jackson collided with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and suffered a head injury, rendering him unconscious on the field.

The team’s medical staff attended to Jackson on site but he was ultimately taken away in an ambulance to the hospital.

“I didn’t catch the replay but he hit heads I think with Cedric and it might have caught him in the chin with his helmet, and it was like a knockout punch is what it was,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters. “So we took all the precautions and took care of him. He had movement and all that kind of stuff, but we still needed to do the right thing and totally take care of him until we know more.”

Carroll ended the practice immediately following Jackson’s injury.

“I didn’t think it was right to try to get everybody cranked back up again and go back out,” Carroll continued. “We didn’t need to do that but we had gotten enough done. We’ll take the plays that we got and what we learned from it. We accomplished the things we needed to accomplish coming to the stadium.”

Seahawks make defensive end Branden Jackson re-signing official

The Seattle Seahawks have officially announced the re-signing of defensive end Branden Jackson, who had been released on July 26.

The Seattle Seahawks released defensive end Branden Jackson less than two weeks ago and now he’s once again a member of the roster.

The Seahawks public relations department tweeted the news on Thursday afternoon. Jackson’s potential re-signing was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport earlier this week.

The Seahawks now have one spot open on the 80-man roster.

Jackson originally joined the Seahawks in 2017 as a member of the practice squad before his eventual promotion to the active roster. He had re-signed his restricted free agent tender in April before he was released on July 26.

The terms of his new deal, however, will likely be less than the $2.133 million value of his restricted free agent tender.

Last season for Seattle, Jackson started three of 15 games played, logging 20 tackles, two passes defended and two sacks on the year.

Seahawks planning to re-sign defensive end Branden Jackson

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to new terms with defensive end Branden Jackson, who was released just a little over a week ago.

“That was fast: The #Seahawks are re-signing DE Branden Jackson, source said,” Rapoport tweeted Monday morning. “He actually was just released by Seattle more than a week ago, but will re-sign under a different deal on Wednesday when he clears protocol.”

The new terms will likely be less than the $2.133 million Jackson was would have commanded on his restricted free agent tender and will save Seattle some cap space.

Jackson originally joined the Seahawks as a member of the practice squad in 2017 before ultimately being promoted to the active roster. For Seattle last year, Jackson started three of 15 regular-season games played and logged 2.0 sacks.

Jackson will have to clear the COVID-19 testing protocol before he can participate in team activities.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray plans to kneel for national anthem

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray announced his intention to kneel during the national anthem in 2020 to protest police brutality.

When Colin Kaepernick made the decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016, it not only cost him his career (at least up to this point) it also stirred up a tremendous amount of controversy, with nearly everyone – including the President – weighing in.

Kaepernick’s kneeling was done as a peaceful protest about police brutality against people of color, and although it has been four years since he last knelt he is back in the news, thanks to the recent protests nationwide in response to the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer last month.

Many current players have spoken out, indicating they intend to follow in Kaepernick’s footsteps and kneel during the 2020 season.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is the latest to state his intention, telling Arizona reporters on a Zoom call on Wednesday that he plans to kneel this season.

“I’ll be kneeling,” Murray said. “I stand for what’s right and that’s the bottom line. I call it like I see it. What’s been going on is completely wrong. I will definitely be taking a knee.”

So far, no one on the Seahawks has indicated they will be kneeling in 2020, although it’s fair to assume Duane Brown and Branden Jackson, who have spent the national anthem in the locker room the last two seasons to avoid punishment, will likely be joining Murray on a knee this season.

In fact, it seems plausible the Seahawks, and other teams, may come up with a way to protest all together, either by kneeling, holding hands, etc. that demonstrates their unity while also showing their solidarity with those fighting police brutality in the states.
